As soon as Theron mentiones another rat, Merida hustles forward to help squish it. When she arrives at the door, she spots another humanoid with bulging white eyes, wild hair, four-fingered hands, and a large hooked club hiding behind the door, prepared to strike!

I assume it already took a swing at Theron as Merida delays until he opened the door and walked in.

"Whoa! That's not nice!"

She moves to the opposite corner...

This provokes an AoO for moving. As I cannot see on the map in which corner the creature is located, I put one icon of Merida in each corner. Please delete the other icons of Merida, @GM Valen. Thanks!

The blade connects, cutting a bit deeper than perhaps expected.

Knowledge (local) (DC 18) to ID the humanoid (black):
This humanod is a derro. Derros dwell deep under most of the surface world’s cities, but very few know of the sadistic creatures’ existence. Descended from mysterious fey that once dwelt deep underground, the derros lust for the comforts of the surface, yet the light of the sun causes them to blister, burn, and die. Derros often abduct surface dwellers to perform hideous experiments on them in their never-ending quest to divine what protects those who dwell above from the burning death, although such mad schemes would appear to have proven fruitless. It is believed that some traumatized victims have been returned to their homes, memories not quite completely wiped of their ordeal, to live the rest of their lives in vague fear of a nightmare they can’t quite recall.
Madness (Ex) Derros use their Charisma modifier on Will saves instead of their Wisdom modifier, and are immune to insanity and confusion effects. Only a miracle or wish can remove a derro’s madness. If this occurs, the derro gains 6 points of Wisdom and loses 6 points of Charisma.

Menudo wrote:

My reading of the rules is that you cannot take total defense and still provide a flank because total defense does not allow you to make AoOs, if you can't make an AoO then you don't threaten, and if you don't threaten, then you can't provide a flank. You are welcome to point out any oversights, exceptions, or flaws to my analysis, if you would like me to reconsider.

COMBAT OVER

If you search the bodies of the two humans:
You find that each has nothing more than a club, a heavy wooden shield, and some leather armor.

If you search the body of the derro:
You find that the derro was wearing leather armor, had a short sword, a repeating light crossbow with 10 poison bolts, and 300 gp.

If you search the remains of the large rat:
You find no treasure, likely because it was just a large rat. It could be meat, if you want it.
You cna make another attempt here to recover a perfect advanced giant rat sample—a DC 20 Heal check is required to succeed.

If you search the other room:

In the next room with straw pallets are stacks and stacks of cages full of normal rats. On a small table next to those cages is a small, shiny black rat statue.

If you cast detect magic on the rat statue, you may open the spoiler below:

Spoiler:
This artifact gives off a moderate transmutation aura. It must be the jet rat.

There is also a ledger here.

Anyone who can read Undercommon may open the spoiler below:

Spoiler:
Written in Undercommon, the ledger provides evidence that the derro have slowly increased their slave sales over the last couple of months, with a huge surge in the last couple of weeks.

A note in the ledger tells about a human woman who escaped not long ago and the mite slave that was beaten to death for allowing it to happen.

Near the barrels is a large chest in which the derro keep their slave sale earnings. It contains 3,500 gp.

In a cage, you find a starving, dehydrated man who answers to the name, "Wafid Sadaqat".

"That derro had some interesting stuff. Among other things, a repeating light crossbow with 10 poison bolts, and 300 gp!"

Destiny | 1-01 |Guardian|Table 2 | On the Trail of History

When the last of the foes in this building fall, there are no signs of any further threats within Cassomir Below. By defeating the derro here and taking the ]jet rat, the Pathfinders have undoubtedly slowed the derros’ plans for the future, if not stopped them entirely.

After you report back to Venture-Captain Hestia Themis, you are congratulated on your work. However, she asks that you remain in the city a while longer.

In the weeks that follow, kidnappings slow in the city, reports suggest that strange disappearances continue to expand in the countryside around Cassomir. Rumors begin to circulate throughout the city that the derro menace has been stopped, but some whisper darker tidings, such as the recent spotting of a derro inside the walls of Swift Prison, a rumor the Taldan authorities heatedly deny.

Part II is now COMPLETED.

I will run Part III as part of PbP Gameday XII, which starts on September 4, 2023.

I will get the game reported and the chronicles out later this week. I plan to set up a new campaign/slides for Parts III & IV as this one is getting crowded/harder to navigate. Due to scheduling, I will likely post the briefing a few days after Gameday starts.
