DM Fern |
Welcome to the game!
Setting things up for now, but a few basics that come to mind as far as how I run things.
I use roll20 for maps, and track HP on the tokens. I'm going to give everyone the power to move all the friendly tokens, so if you're on your phone and can't move yourself other folks can help out and move you.
I like pictures of NPCs so I'll have one for each person you meet, using google slides. I'll make the file editable, feel free to jot notes of things you learn about them -- to start, the whole crew is one there, I'll add names in as you larn them.
When it is combat time, I'll roll initiative for everyone, then group folks into blocks, and you can post your turn anywhere within your block. Works pretty well for my other campaigns. I'll also do secret rolls for passive things, but if you want to sense motive on someone or you're searching and wanna roll perception by all means!
There are a LOT of subsystems in this AP, and I want them to mostly stay in the background. My plan is to give a little overview of them as they become relevant here in the discussion thread, then you guys role play and we'll roll as needed.
To start, there are actions you can take day or night aboard the ship. I feel like breaking each day or night into a single action is not very immersive, so I'm going to give you the gist of them here, and then never mention them directly in the gameplay thread.
During the day you will be put to work. You can decide how hard you work. Working hard gets you a bonus on checks to complete your work. Exhausted and need a nap? You can try to shirk your work for the day. Wanna sneak around where you aren't supposed to be while pretending to work? You can spend a day doing that. Wanna make friends while you work? That's your focus for the day. Need some stuff? You can visit the quartermaster's store, but the time it takes will impact how well you do your job that day. It reminds me of Sims 3, if any of you played it, when you decide what you're focusing on at work.
At night a good pirate is a drunk, sleepy, behaved pirate. You can turn in a bit early to get rid of the fatigued feeling that will often plague you, being worked hard aboard the ship. But if you're not sleepy right away? You can gamble with some crewmates, sing some sea shanties to entertain the crew, or spend some one time trying to befriend folks and still have time to get some rest. Up to no good? You can forgo sleep and spend some time sneaking around or trying to steal things in the dead of the night, when most of those aboard are asleep and it's safest to do so.
Any questions for me? I'm still putting a few things together, but I anticipate I could have the first game post up late tonight or early tomorrow!
Terry of Quent |
Check.
Expect Terry to work hard at being a social butterfly. Enemies will stab you in the back. Friends will protect you. Heck, even getting some to neutral means seriously reducing the threats on a personal level!
Katara Akshay |
Check! Thanks for the invite and for picking it up, Fern :)
While being a aquakineticist, I gave Katara rogue as a variant multiclass (to cover our trapfinding!), so I expect her to act roguish around. Maybe some sneaking around at nights? I love the risk! Yet she still has some diplomacy to make friends during the day, maybe not as capably as my companions here :)
If there are any questions, please let me know! She's also a carpenter, so maybe this will be useful someday.
Madame Ming |
Thanks for picking this up!
Gonna be interesting with such a big group.
Can see the GM has some humor though: "presumable adults" :P

Cannot find the link to your roll 20 for the game.
Edit, just wondering if you need any more info on the bar from me.

Go to the very top of this thread. You'll see where it says: "Roll20 Maps" right above "Campaign Info".
Atia Leroung |
Glad to be here. :) Atia will probably be rather social and all about learning how to Properly Pirate.
Kragor Bloodskull |
Hey everyone, just checking in. It looks like with all the squishies aboard Kragor would be a better choice than Randall (better luck next time, buddy).
Katara Akshay |
Really liked the "crew" slides! This will certainly be helpful.
@Kragor - with 9 people on the party, including the Dwarf ranger, you should honestly feel free to play whatever you want. Without our armor and gear, we're probably all squishy at this point :)
Javell DeLeon |
Yeah I would agree with Lapyd. You really should play what you want. Now, if you WANT to play Kragor then rock on!
But if deep down you have this bug in your gut that says: "A part of me really wants to play Randall", then I think you should play Randall.
I'm not a bard fan - just because they're not my flavor - but you gotta admit, Inspire(whatever) is pretty dang handy. And it comes in handy for EVERYBODY. :)
Ultimately though, just don't regret it. As long as your content with your choice then that's all that matters, bud. :)
Seadreamer Stonebeard |
I agree with the others.
Play the one that you want to play. If it leaves us short melee. (Pun intended), then we will just have to work around it.
Katara Akshay |
Honestly I don't think we will have any issues. We have people enough for two S&S. The current group is going to give Fern a lot of work as it is :) I even argue if it's not more work to deal with such a huge group than splitting in two, but I trust the decision. Plus, I love that I made Katara more useful by giving her trapfinding, even if she ends up not being that efficient as a damage dealer anymore. I am happy how it shaped up and looking forward to what's to come!
Katara Akshay |
I just noticed Terry is a male!
Lol, sorry mate. It's absolutely my own fault for not checking properly. I hope I don't misgender you in-game :$
Terry of Quent |
Null sheen, chummer.
The character is intentionally androgynous, as it INCREASES the comparisons between "Terry" and his rumored mother: Tessa Fairwinds.
Take any advantage you can have on the open seas, especially if your opponents give it to you without cause!
Cassandra Tyche |
So sorry I have a minor emergency to deal with this weekend, i may not get a chance to post till Monday but hope to find time early tomorrow morning! Sorry again, not a great way to start off!
Javell DeLeon |
Joran changing his nickname to "Shark Bait" sent me lmao
Lol! I love it!
I've got to give credit to Fern ONCE again. It must be an innate talent of hers. :) You'll notice on the Roll20 map it reads: Joran "The Oaf" Bravestone. Also Fern's excellent doing. I couldn't actually change his name like I could this one because I already exceeded the post limit from a couple of previous games but I sure would've if I could've. :)
So much fun. :)

@Destinie: I don't think that's 30 feet. It actually takes 4 successful rolls to make it 30 feet.
Seeing how you had only 2 successful rolls, that would only be 15'. So, I'm not exactly sure what the falling damage of that would be but it's somewhere between 1d6 and 2d6. But I don't think it's 3d6 so that's at least something. At least, I HOPE that's right. 3d6 damage is terr-i-bull(especially at this level).

Ah, it's for 30 ft. Got it.
Javell DeLeon |
@Destinie: I will say, without any ranks in Climb, that's a dangerous task. You got more guts than me. I'd probably just go with swabbing the deck. :P
You do know you don't have to attempt it, right? You could just settle for swabbing the deck if you so choose. Just thought I'd throw that out there just in case you might think it's mandatory.
It's not mandatory is it, Fern? I guess I ought to ask the DM to be sure. :P
Javell DeLeon |
@Katara: You actually need 4 more successful rolls. It's a 60' climb and 4 successful rolls only equals 30'.
And Ha! I just now realized you're part of the "Water tribe!"
I love it! Quite thematic. :)

Atia Leroung wrote:Her older sister always told her that if she was in a bad situation, find the biggest man in the room and hide behind him...Lol! I also got a kick out of this. :)
It's a rule that's served me well IRL... my partner is 6'7" to my 5" hahaha
Atia Leroung |
LMAO, I just noticed I said that I'm five inches tall. Occasionally, it feels like it, but... five FEET.
Atia Leroung |
Thanks for the heads up - thought I caught it in time and changed it. I'm relatively new at PBP and learning to be a little more detail oriented :P

I know some folks are busy irl and haven't had as much time to post, gonna wait until everyone has had time to climb or decline attempting to climb before choosing the riggers. Terry is a shoo-in so far with the speedy climbing, then three of you have tied for second place with one missed check each.
Any further ties will be broken by adding the total successful climb checks rolls and the highest total will win. Right now Joran = 147, Ming = 151, and Randall =128, if my math is correct.
Buuut Joran has caught the unfortunate attention of Master Scourge, who oversees the swabs, and very much wants to bully poor shark bait... >.>
In the meantime crow's nest folks, feel free to interact to entertain yourselves!
Katara Akshay |
Thanks Fern! I'm totally fine to just be waiting on the background at this point too, but otherwise Katara are botched enough on her climb attempts to know she's a swab for life :) should we maybe be declaring our "daytime actions" at this point?
Randall McNally |
Actually that might work out. Several keys on my laptop, my primary way of posting while at work, have stopped working and I need to get the keyboard replaced. I'll be following along on my phone but don't expect any real in depth posting until I get it fixed.
Destinie Nicholae |
Kidnapped by pirates twice in one day. Poor woman.
@Seadreamer Stonebeard. Luckily (or not, if he doesn't like swabbing)stabbing, it doesn't look like he'll best any of the other climbers. Oh and Des almost died trying.

You know what, go ahead and have Joran be forced to work for Scourge. That's cool with me. Could prove interesting. ;)
Edit: And to be honest, the more I think about it, the more I like the idea. :D
Madame Ming |
I think for scenes besides the main scene, perhaps just do it like this:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Kitchen
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Or something similar.
Spoilers always feel like don't read it, but if it's just roleplay might be interesting for others?
Madame Ming |
Am i supposed to read the spoilers?
Why is there so much stuff in spoilers ingame?
Madame Ming |
Nice, is the page changing the order of posts?
Javell DeLeon |
Nice, is the page changing the order of posts?
Yes. Yes it is. If you post something and then decide to post something right after it, it will flip them.
If someone posts and you post right after them, odds are it will flip them as well.
The boards are a mess. It's just something we're gonna have to deal with.
I don't think it's all the time but it sure feels like it.
Per spoilers: I've got no problem with spoilers. But honestly it doesn't really matter to me either way. I just go with the flow. :)
Atia Leroung |
I read the spoilers regardless of who they're addressed to and play the game like I haven't read them, so. I don't have an issue with it.
