[SFS] GM Zoomba's 3-07 Strike at Zone 78 (High) (Inactive)

Maps/Slides

Vehicle Combat Rules:
Vehicles need a PC to take control and act on the controlling PC’s initiative. PCs can relinquish control of the vehicle to another PC or engage autopilot as a swift action. While controlling the vehicle, the controlling PC can drive the vehicle as a move action and move up to its listed speed. Vehicle movement provokes attacks of opportunity. PCs can also ram the vehicle into a creature as a full action. Ramming allows the vehicle to move in a straight line up to its full speed. If the vehicle hits a creature or object, it attempts to deal damage equal to double the vehicle’s collision damage to the creature and half the collision damage to itself. The targeted creature can attempt a Reflex save to avoid the attack.

If the vehicle’s Hit Points fall below less than half its maximum Hit Points, it gains the broken condition. This imposes a –2 penalty to its AC and collision DC, reduces its Piloting modifier by 2, and halves its full speed and mph speed. If a vehicle takes damage that reduces it to 0 HP, it is wrecked.

PCs that choose to attack while inside a vehicle are able to do so. However, vehicles provide a penalty to attack rolls unless the vehicle is stopped. The vehicle provides the listed cover bonuses to the passengers and pilot. PCs who wish to disembark can do so as a move action.

Blooming Catastrophe Return to Grave

Beep-boop-botting
From within the sub, Maxamas finds it easy to find a an unexpected angle from which to fire at the animal.

Stealth for Trick: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (11) + 16 = 27
Attack v KAC: 1d20 + 8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 8 + 1 = 16 for Piercing damage: 1d6 + 2 + 3d8 ⇒ (4) + 2 + (1, 3, 5) = 15

However, even caught flat-footed its hide is unnaturally thick and the bullet only grazes it.

Blooming Catastrophe Return to Grave

With a roar, the crocodilian creature surges through the water at the submarine. It rocks as the beast's elongated jaws clamp around the vehicle.

Attack: 1d20 + 17 - 2 ⇒ (16) + 17 - 2 = 31 for Piercing damage: 2d10 + 13 ⇒ (5, 7) + 13 = 25

The hull buckles slightly from the impact. Then your eyes widen as from within the creature's throat a second set of jaws shoot out at the sub for a second strike! Luckily these fail to pierce the ship's alloy.

Attack: 1d20 + 17 - 2 - 4 ⇒ (2) + 17 - 2 - 4 = 13 for Piercing damage: 1d10 + 12 ⇒ (9) + 12 = 21

Cavaler, recoils at the ferocity of the creatures assault on the sub. Knowing that it is a significant threat he takes a hand off his rocket rifle and removes a spell gem from a pouch on his utility belt. Draining the mystical energy from the gem, he unleashes a mental assault on the horrifying crocodile.

Mind Thrust DC 16 will save for half damage: 4d10 ⇒ (6, 8, 7, 5) = 26

Chikasa and Azara still get a +1 bonus to their potential attack rolls from Cavaler's first round Get 'Em action.

Blooming Catastrophe Return to Grave

I did forget to move the creature - whoops!
Eselar: the 'green' water is 30 feet deep: are you swimming in it? (Brown is only 1-foot deep and easily stand-able on. The crocodilian creature seems to have 15-foot reach with its bite.
And thank you for reminding me about the hardness boost Gunnz: had forgotten that last night!

Will: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
Realizing this isn't just some minor predator threat, Cavaler breaks out a big gem and Gunnz lines up a more serious shot. Luckily both seem to work fine: the croc lets out a roar of pain from the spell which lets Gunnz's shot land square in its mouth.
Gunnz: are you making it flat-footed, or off-target for the round?

@GM if Gunnz plays before Eselar, the big thing is flat-footed and can't use a reaction to attack Eselar when he moves closer to it, right?.

Blooming Catastrophe Return to Grave

In general, I try to abstract the exact order in PbPs just to keep things moving, within initiative 'groupings'

In this case, in the first round Gunnz tried to Trick attack the creature, but missed, then later in that first round, you made your approach, and got bit. In round 2, Gunnz's shot did succeed, making it flat-footed for the rest of that round (and thus it can't React to anything you guys are doing this Round 2.

Does that make sense?

"We've got no choice now Gunnz! Take control of the sub and ram the croc. I'll try to distract it."

Cavaler climbs out the top hatch of the sub. Now exposed on the conning tower, he momentarily hesitates as he sees the horrible, mutated croc up close without the benefit of the sub's sturdy walls in front of him. Scanning around to see if the fighting attracted notice from anything else, you see not far away a nest in the bog's shallows rising just above to water. Th nest itself is constructed of a combination of local branches and plants and various metal and plastic shards that appear to have been scavenged together. Woven into it, there's a 10-foot long length of adamantine alloy cable.

The nest also holds a clutch of eggs, whose shells seem especially soft.

Life Science DC 20:

As best my math is, yes. It took several bad bites (though the hardness reduced a lot of it), and ramming deals some damage to the ship hitting the thing as well.

Would Mending work on the sub?

Blooming Catastrophe Return to Grave

Unfortunately no: the sub is too big for that spell. Greater magic, or taking some time to Engineer repairs would be needed to start restoring it.

Azara doesn't share Gunnz's enthusiasm for the nest's eggs. As he looks around, the lashunta keeping guard spies a shoreline suitable for landing the sub about a quarter-mile north. It would be a good spot to dock and moor the PumpJet while you head further inalnd towards the non-functioning beacon, as well as to better take a look at and maybe patch the croc-beast's damage to the ship.

A faint trail through the mangrove trees leads away from that resting point deeper into the island.

Survival DC 25:
As you're landing on the shore and looking around, you spies some prints - shoe-prints. A group of at least three, and possibly more, Medium humanoids were moving up and down this shore within the last day. The track's spacing and pattern looks like that of a patrol.

Azara can't do much to help track down the trail.

But he's glad they managed to find a relatively safe place to keep the sub.

He heads along the trail, in the lead with shield and pistol out, trying to keep out of sight or other sensory method of any creatures that might be interested in eating or otherwise maiming them.

Blooming Catastrophe Return to Grave

A blazed trail leads through wetlands into the interior of the island. The mangrove trees crowd together as you all walk past them. Their aerial roots leave little room to easily avoid. Chikasa dogs most of it but even for him with some difficulty; the rest of you feel the roots brush against your shoulders while you move through the forest. Loose clothing or bags snag constantly. The size of the trees makes visibility difficult and the shadows filtering past the bleached coral branches dance just out of clear visibility.

The deeper you move forwards, the more the tree roots form intricate patterns. Not only that, some of the roots have grown into small handlike structures, almost reaching out to grasp those walking past. While the relative quiet of the swamp is only softly broken up by the sound of your own movements and the distant chirps and resulting of wildlife, each of you get the unnerving sense that someone or something is watching you as you move.

Life Science DC 19:
You are able to collect some suitable stripping from the mangrove trees for Zigvigix to look at later.

After about twenty minutes of travel through the dense mangrove thickets the trees thin into a flat meadow. Gnats could around still puddles here and there and swarm any exposed flesh of yours as you near them. A bit in the distance you see a herd of foot-tall ungulates with coral horns and spotted markings grazing while swatting away the bugs hovering around them.

Azara:
As you've been carefully moving about a bit to the side, trying to stay out of site, you are able to approach the herbivores without spooking them. Up close, you realize that what appeared from a distance to be fur is actually just normal skin: their spotted markings are numerous eyes embedded in their flesh.

Gunnz takes a lot of photos of the weird trees, cross referecing them on the mini-computer that is attached as an attractive bracelet on her wrist.

"Not seen anything like these since I attended the "Trees of the living Dread" holo-vid release. " she says, a shiver running down her back.

"Seriously creepy"

Spying the herd of animals ahead, Gunnz comes to a halt.

"Let's hope these just eat grass, and not moving things like us."

Despite how glittery his armor is, Azara is fairly stealthy, the light slightly dimming and bending around him, more proof of the power of gravity.

He rejoins the group, quietly and reveals what he's seen.

"Those little herbivores are...strange," he comments.

"That's not patterns on fur. In fact, they don't have any fur at all. Those are eyes all over their bodies."

"I'm not one to assume that the evolutionary forces on my planet are the only ones or that the evolutionary responses to those forces are correct, but I can't shake the feeling that most creatures shouldn't be covered in eyes."

"I wonder if someone is actively experimenting here, rather than just random forces. "muses Gunnz.

I agree, something's wrong here and may be this is not natural but man-made...

The grazing creatures do not look aggressive. In fact, they seem a bit skittish themselves: they'd likely bolt away from you if you approached them too overtly.
