Cheshire presents the coin again and launches a bit of fire at one of the hobgoblins. He calls out "Even more are coming we don't want to linger."

The gnome turns and runs to the north wall of the bridge and looks down to where they repair work is being done.

I am assuming the repairs are happening where the crane is connected. Is there an easy way to get down.

"Who is going to put our present in place? I will get into position to seal the deal." He takes a step or two more west.

In Dwarven Gazul called out ”Fall back! We need to blow the bridge.” He waited to see what she would do. Preferably she would listen and meet up with her comrades, so they could move together. But if she refused, then he’d have to run in to help her.

Kudvathalas was impressed by Katra's versatility, and attempted to help out the remaining Hobgoblins down.

Target the Northernmost Hobgoblin. DC 13 Con Save, cold damage, disadvantage on failure. No effect on save.

Winter wind gathered on Kudvathalas' outstretched hand and surrounded the injured Hobgoblin.

He then moved next to the explosives, intending to give Sarya some assistance with her climb.

Question: We do need to get the explosive in place? Where it will do damage. I thought I remember seeing something about that somewhere and finding it again is failing on me. But I wanted to confirm we can't just leave the bundle on the bridge. It needs to be placed?

Katra again slammed her hammer into the bridge and the resulting thunderclap echoed out.

After slamming down her hammer, she backed up towards the far side of the bridge.

Seeing that the Hobgoblin was down, Katra called out "Don't forget to grab his weapon!"

@Cheshire I'm pretty sure he said that we could put it anywhere, but the only place we know that it will take out the whole bridge would be the weakened spot.

@Gazul: are you doing anything this round? It looks like Katra will use her move action to fall back but will still not be enough for her to reach you. Are you waiting, moving towards her, moving back?

@Cheshire: Sarya had volunteered to climb down the bridge and set the explosives in the area that is being repaired with the hopes that once the temporary juryrigged repair was blown away, the bridge would collapse. At least that's what her engineering skills told her.

The timeline of how that 'could' happen is laid out in the OCC of the last turn.

Going down from the crane would have been slightly easier but would take a few rounds longer.

Seeing his sister go down, Gazul let out a primal roar. Charging forward he planted he axe right into the hobgoblin’s forehead. The axe sunk in, digging deep into the brain. Death was nearly instant.

Gazul ripped his axe free from the dead recruit, and then began to drag his sister to safety. ”Medic!” He yelled, in the moment not remembering that they didn’t have one.

Cheshire holds the coin to his chest and speaks a quiet word and makes a motion almost like he is pulling something from his head and sending it out before him. The newly dead recruit before him does not stir but a great snake stirs, a thick coil and a fanged head rises up looking toward the on coming hobgoblins. The gnome speaks to Gazul, "Don't mind the snake. Keep moving with your sister. Its just to slow them." He moves back to the west.

Its a minor illusion Investigation DC 13. So while you and I in real life might think it a large snake it certainly isn't giant. Still filling a much of the 5 foot square with a coiled snake poised to strike over the corpse of their friend. I moved as far as I can to the west heading toward the yellow circle.

Sarya tried applying the explosives on the place she remembered was important from the bridge plans. She focused on her work using Kudvathalas' blessing for it.

"Sarya, we have 3 more Hobgoblins crossing the bridge, and Katra has fallen. I'm going to help her. Please work quickly, I fear we don't have much time."

Kudvathalas then ran to the Dwarves' to lend any assistance he could.

If I still have an action left I will try to stabilize Katra. If not, I will use any remaining movement to help Gazul pull her along.

Kudvathalas pulled a strip of cloth from his pouch and bound Katra's wounds.
"That should stop her bleeding, but she will need something more substantial to get back in the fight."

I don't think we intended this to be this close. But here we go. I was hoping the snake would slow at least one for a round or so.

Cheshire takes a shot at the hobgoblin with a bolt of fire.

He tries to keep his frustration quiet as he turns to move where he can line up a shot on the bomb. Careful to use cover to shield him from sight and takes his place in the bushes. Hoping to draw no hostiles his way.

Realizing that he wasn’t going to get his sister to safety, Gazul let her fall to the ground and turned to face his pursuer. The only way he was going to save her was if he killed their pursuer. And if there is one thing you don’t want to do it is to threaten a dwarf’s clan. His axe was red once more, as it cut through armor and flesh alike. He ripped it out of the hobgoblin’s chest with a grunt of both anger and satisfaction.

Getting quite a kill count. Lvl1 is really deadly! Pretty easy for PC and NPC alike to be taken down in a single hit

Sarya saw that they were in a bad strategic position. She drew her sword and made a few arcane motions in the air and said something in Elven.

Elven:
"May my skin be as strong as my heart."

Her skin grew tougher and she moved close to Kudvathalas drawing the soldier's attention to her. She spoke in Elven so the recruit wouldn't understand her.

Elven:
"Move, I have his attention!"

She then moved close to the recruit fighting Gazul.

Cast Blade Ward and move SSSEEE (S = South, E = East in map). The idea is to draw AoO from recruit with Kud so he can move without provoking. I think Gazul's recruit turned into pudding, so there's no need to worry about him, I think.

Grateful for Sarya drawing the Hobgoblin's attention, Kudvathalas rushed directly East, supporting Katra's weight and helping her towards the safe side of the bridge as much as possible.

A hobgoblin recruit cannot kill you in one round (max damage of 9).

@Sarya: good move! You'll draw Opportunity Attacks from both recruits but you will free Kudvathalas.

Blade ward only expires after I act, so...

Sarya stepped sideways and thrust her sword at the recruit with Gazul and kept moving outside of the bridge.

Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25

Crit extra damage: 1d8 ⇒ 4

Her thrust went through the recruit's neck, stopping him from screaming as he gurgled.

Afterwards she kept on going and said loudly to Gazul "Go now!". After moving fast she yelled "Now Cheshire, blow it up now!"

Gazul nodded his appreciation as the last hobgoblin on the bridge fell. Grabbing his sister he continued dragging her to safety, even as the reinforcements were pouring in.

Kudvathalas continued helping Katra to safety. Once off the main road, he made his way to Cheshire, hoping he would be able to lend some of his goddess' fortune.

Moving until I have Katra off the road, near Cheshire. That will take my movement and a dash action.

"Cheshire. All of our allies are off the bridge. Now is the time. We're relying on you. May Desna guide your aim."

Turn 035 - Blade Ward

Cheshire holds the coin and begins the motions to fire the bolt of fire at the bundle he twists his hands playing not just with fire but fate as well. Heat warbles the air over his hands and he lets loose the firebolt.

Using Tides of Chaos for advantage.

Spell Attack Firebolt: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25 Holy Crap!!!
Spell Attack Firebolt Advantage: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6

The mote of fire slams the bundle directly burning into the container deeply. A long pause makes one wonder if the small bolt of fire hit so well and drove so deep that it was simply smothered by the fuel. Such thoughts are utterly destroyed when the bundle explodes sending a spray of fire, stone and dust out into the night with a rumble heard far and wide. A bright plume erupts into the sky. Cheshire lurches back in wonder mixed with horror as the heat bursts at him suddenly. He runs toward the west so that the foundation stone of the bridge allows him to see if his friends indeed made it clear as they had claimed.

He speaks loudly over the ringing in his ears, "Ah STUMP. He was going to use that on a STUMP!"

Once in the woods, the group managed to get to the safety of the woods, Gazul finally put his sister down. He put his hands on her and said ”Torag, I’ve never asked anything of ye before. But I need ye now. Please...heal her. Please...”

As he said this his hands began to glow, and her wounds started to heal. With wide eyes he exclaimed ”Did ye all see that? Holy forge!” Phaendar had fallen, but it wasn’t his home. Much more pressing to him was that their group had no casualties and that his family would survive.

He looks at the others. "We should go."

His defiance melts at the size of the group of refugees seeing so few.

Sarya noted the name of the commander. Scarvinious, son of Scabvistin. She thought of replying with an arrow to his face, but at this distance it was unlikely she would kill him with one shot, and she could not spare the ammunition. She turned her back to the army trying to convey that they didn't mean anything to her. She avoided thinking about the dead.

Action 2

Sarya knew very well what a defeat meant. She touched the scar on her left cheek. As soon as they started their trek into the woods she counted the living. Seventeen total, including herself. No children. She wasn't sure if that was a good thing. That was not much and they needed to focus their minds on something else.

She said to everyone "To those of you who don't know me, my name is Sarya of the Vanitahr elven clan. I can help us survive in the woods, but it will not be easy or pleasant. I know you have revenge in your hearts. The band that attacked Phaendar is called the Ironfang Legion. I have heard of them, as they are the ones responsible for the Ramgate Massacre two years ago. This is the first time they appear on the battlefield ever since. Now, I can help you live today so we can fight tomorrow. And believe me, we will fight. But today we survive. We need a place to spend the night. I doubt any of us will be able to sleep, but we have to find somewhere safe to rest."

She followed up giving everyone tasks so they can stay focused and keep their minds busy.

Level up: All I get is HP, not sure how much, and Action Surge.
