Kudvathalas watched the wolf tear into his Dwarven companion. He watched her fall, unconscious. He delayed for only a moment as his gaze shifted between the wolf, Katra, the refugees and the Hobgoblin. The choice was easy, Kudvathalas pulled the healing potion from his pouch and started to move towards Katra. That's when it happened.

Cue dramatic wild magic surge

Kudvathalas' jaw couldn't help but drop at the display of power his tiny companion just displayed.

"Desna's wings..."

After a beat he regained his composure and approached Katra, giving the scorched hole that used to be a wolf a wide berth. He knelt at her side, and poured the healing potion into her mouth.

Healing Potion: 2d4 + 2 ⇒ (4, 3) + 2 = 9

With the most pressing job complete, he looked to Cheshire and said with a bit of a grin "I'm glad you're with us. That was incredible."

The gnome looks around wide eyed, bits of his hair raising and stirring strangely against the slight evening breeze. Cheshire looks about quizzically, he mutters, "Still looks like home, everyone's still here, good good." He throws out a hand and looks at it as he is happy its till attached.

He pulls his father's lucky coin and clenches it in his hand and lifting it to his chin.

"Thank you friend." The gnome wipes a tear marking his face with a streak of wet soot. "You brought her back. Thank you."

Cool move Cheshire. It will take Sarya some time to accept it wasn't an accident. By the way, I didn't know the original spell also went off when there was a wild magic surge.

Sarya was focused on the battle with the soldier, but her years in training taught her to mind the rest of the battle field as well. She watched with amazement in her eyes as the gnome disintegrated the wolf and with renewed confidence, thrust her sword towards the soldier.

Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (18) + 5 = 23
Damage: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7

Again, the sword drew blood from his flank, even if barely. Sarya was satisfied as she knew that such small wounds did add up and the target eventually passed out with pain. It would also be a good idea to take this soldier as a prisoner for questioning. Sadly, she didn't speak the hobgoblin tongue. Maybe the others did.

She still wondered about the lightning noise made by the gnome. It could attract the attention of the army in the town.

I was thinking that too. But the language in the PHB is that you roll after casting. Also if the result replaced spell casting it would mean that Wild Magic Sorcerers would never volunteer to roll on the table to get the "Tides of Chaos" feature back. And trust me its not always helpful. I share your apprehension about drawing attention too.

Sarya realized that the soldier was starting to feel the weight of the wounds. She took advantage of his drowsiness and stepped to flank with Gazul and tried to further injury him.

Move to flank with Gazul without leaving the soldier's reach and attack.

Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
Flank adv: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18
Damage: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12

Unfortunately, her thrust barely missed, getting stuck in the soldier's armor.

BTW, I think you counted my arrows wrong, I think I shot three. One was shot in the tavern when it was full with panicking people. The second was on the wolf outside the temple, and the third was at the soldier at the bridge.

With the wolf down, his allies on their feet, and the refugees nearing the far bank, Kudvathalas' focus landed on their final foe.

He moved directly towards it Full movement right, and called the winds of winter and let loose upon the Hobgoblin, trying to chill his muscles enough to hamper his sword arm.

Frostbite: 1d6 ⇒ 2

Speaking of arrows, I should be at 19, unless you're allowing us to recover some

Hit: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
Damage: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13

The soldier was wounded, and that meant he was slowing down. He was also well trained...too well trained. Gazul could see the pattern in his movements. He feinted with his axe to bring the hobgoblin’s guard up, and then hit the foe in the face with his shield. Once staggered, it was easy enough to being his axe down onto the hobgoblin’s head. Due to the height difference, the axe took the hobgoblin in the face, right above the nose. It was the kind of blow that nobody would get up from. It was a quick death, but it was also a messy one.

OOC: I'll adjust the arrows for both Sarya and Kudvathalas. I am usually OK with PCs recovering 50% of shot arrows if they have the time to 'find them'. Thanks for checking up on me.

@Gazul: I admire your enthusiasm but the soldier is far from dead.

BTW, I prefer you guys describe kill shots and me have to adjust than the other way around.

Second BTW, don't forget that you ALL have inspirations. I would have given one to Cheshire last turn but found out he already had one.

That is a fair default assumption. Would they have known to drop the bundle near the north half-circle of the bridge so that we can get it in place near the repair on that footing. Or do we need to get one to come back?

That's fair. But I gotta ask.

Cheshire sees the refugees and calls out to the one carrying the explosives, "Leave your bundle there and run for the goal."

The gnome moves a few steps closer to the remaining foe. He holds his father's coin in his hand. Lifting it to his chin. He almost chuckles. He flips the coin and catches it and slaps it against the back of his other hand. "Your dog sends his fleas."

Acrana: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10 Success: Casting Infestation DC 13 CON save

Infestation:
(A spell from Xanathar's Guide To Everything)
Conjuration
Level: Cantrip
Casting time: 1 Action
Range: 30 feet
Components: V, S, M (a living flea)
Duration: Instantaneous
You cause a cloud of mites, fleas, and other parasites to appear momentarily on one creature you can see within range. The target must succeed on a Constitution saving throw, or it takes 1d6 poison damage and moves 5 feet in a random direction if it can move and its speed is at least 5 feet. Roll a d4 for the direction: 1., north; 2, south; 3, east; or 4, west. This movement doesn’t provoke opportunity attacks, and if the direction rolled is blocked, the target doesn't move.
The spell’s damage increases by 1d6 when you reach 5th level (2d6), 11th level (3d6), and 17th level (4d6).

Infestation Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 1
Direction: 1d4 ⇒ 2 South So no movement because he's blocked. But he might get bit by one bug. This was so much more fun in my head.

Gazul knew this wasn’t a fair fight. While it was admirable that the hobgoblin was still standing, he was now injured, had blood in his eyes, and was hopelessly outnumbered. It was only a question of how long he could hold everyone up. Recognizing a last stand in the name of duty, Gazul couldn’t help but respect the hobgoblin. OOps terribly sorry. I thought that the line that said the hobgoblin received a wound that no one could rise from meant he was dead as of Turn 29. I would have acted completely different. Katra turning the situation to a joke with her brother lets me off the hook IN CHARACTER but I let one phrase carry more wait than the numerous cues that he was still standing.

Hit: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8

Gazul staggered back, forced on the defensive. He managed to growl ”Not everyone has the luxury of playing with puppies during a battle. Get yer arse over here!” just as the spear grazed his neck. He was more impressed than ever with the hobgoblin. While he didn’t say it, he had to acknowledge that this enemy would have beaten him in a duel. While not a pleasant realization, it was better to be honest with oneself than to be dead due to overconfidence.

Gazul, we should really try to flank him. Us attacking with advantage is much much better. It's a 58% chance of hit versus 35% for each

Sarya saw that the soldier was cornered fighting for his life. That made him dangerous and he was showing it by successfully drawing blood from Gazul. She realized that the dwarf was not very much into strategic fighting and grimaced. She had no extra room to maneuver, so she just attempted to finish the soldier off.

"I'm busy waiting to kill three enemies." Katra called back. "Besides, my numbers are better than yours."

Katra's tone was light-hearted, but she did spare a glance back towards her brother while waiting on the other recruits to come.

Quietly, Katra said "You should get the device ready, then get to the far side of the bridge. We're gonna have to start falling back soon. and you are the one who's going to set the thing on fire, right?"

She then looked at Kudavathalas and said "You don't want to be standing next to me, I'm about to unleash the power of my God's weapon." before turning her attention back to the recruits.

I'm readying an action to use Thunderclap when 2 or more of them are adj. to me.

To be fair though, and just so you're aware, base rules flanking does nothing except allow rogues to sneak attack (not cause flank, but because one of the conditions is they have an ally next to their target).
