Action 2

Sarya asked locals "Are there any carts that we can grab around? We'll need as much provision as we can and carts surely makes that task easier."

As they sneaked through the town, a change could be seen on Sarya. It was like she was a younger version of herself.

Action 3

Sarya looked about and whispered "We should try to bring that wolf down from afar. If our aim is true, it will die before it reaches us."

If group agrees:

Bow: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
Surprise advantage: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
Damage: 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10

That's a surprise attack recommendation, BTW.

A. Oreld’s Fine Shop

B. Phaendar Trading Company (smithy)
C. Riverwood Shrine
D. Taproot Inn
E. Phaendar Bridge

And remember that these are just suggestions so feel free to make up other areas keeping in mind that Phaendar is a small town.

OOC: PHB states, "Any character or monster that doesn’t notice a threat is surprised at the start of the encounter. If you’re surprised, you can’t move or take an action on your first turn of the combat, and you can’t take a reaction until that turn ends."

So basically, the PCs would get to act in Round 1 while the wolf would not.

However, there is no advantage on the attack roll.

And as soon as the shot is fired, I would roll for initiatives.

I could allow more than one person to make a ranged attack if described properly.

Kudvathalas looked at the growing group, turned to Aubrin and asked
"If we are trying to avoid notice, maybe we should keep the group small. Sarya mentioned there was a place near the bridge that we could gather. Do you think you could bring the villagers there, and watch them? Also, I ask a lot, but my Dwarven ally, Gazul, is injured. Has your god given you any more magic to help him?"

Action 3
Kudvathalas looks to the more experienced Elf and nods silently. He pulls his totem from his belt and prepares to call forth the winds of winter.

Action 2:

"Take your hands off me and start carrying food." shouted Katra, then gestured towards the cellar where they were passing up crates.

She then grabbed a metal frying pan and put it in her pack, making sure it wouldn't make any noise.

Action 3:

Katra doesn't say anything, but nods. She turns and gesticulates towards the corner of the building while pointing at the refugees.

She then prepares to charge, moving as quietly towards the front as she can get.

OOC: Sadly, I don't have my books where I'm staying during quarantine, but a quick google search confirms that attacking an unsuspecting foe or from an unseen position provides advantage on the roll. That's how Rogues get sneak attacks without another melee.

Here's what's in the PHB about Unseen Targets:

"Combatants often try to escape their foes' notice by hiding, casting the invisibility spell, or lurking in darkness.

When you attack a target that you can't see, you have disadvantage on the attack roll. This is true whether you're guessing the target's location or you're targeting a creature you can hear but not see. If the target isn't in the location you targeted, you automatically miss, but the DM typically just says that the attack missed, not whether you guessed the target's location correctly.

When a creature can't see you, you have advantage on attack rolls against it.

If you are hidden — both unseen and unheard — when you make an attack, you give away your location when the attack hits or misses."

Not sure of the page, but here's the D&D Beyond Link

OOC: I think the above is the gist of it. If the enemy 'can't' (incapable of) see you then yes, you have advantage.

But if you are 'hidden' then you lose your 'hidden' status as soon as you make an attack and thus don't have an advantage on that attack.

I would not allow rogues to get sneak attack that way.

In fact, I think I read somewhere that they made it like that to avoid a rogue from attacking from hiding (get sneak attack) and hiding with his cunning action and then be 'hidden' again.

But I could be wrong so feel free to show me where I am mistaken. And, don't worry, I don't this as a personal affront to my authority or anything like that. This is a game and many of us are playing with more than one system so we are all always learning.

PS: I'll wait for Gazul to post. I 'may' be able to update later today. If not, then tomorrow.

OOC: Well, the beautiful thing about 5e is that much of the ruling is done by the DM according to what makes sense. I will certainly continue to give advantage to hiding attackers in my games, but you're free to rule as you feel it's right.

My only argument for allowing advantage (both for ourselves and enemies) is that attacking from a hiding place should somehow give a mechanical boon. I mean, surprising someone should make it a lot easier to hurt them.

I think that idea is that the first hit has advantage. Shooting someone while you are hidden is one of the bread and butter ways you get sneak attack if your a rogue.

So you give yourself away when it hits or misses but the initial attack roll is made with advantage. Thus it can't be continual advantage but the opening salvo would be with advantage.

Not a big deal without a rogue. I am find with whatever ruling.

Cheshire looks around the kitchen stores. "Grab the essentials I guess. Plenty of hunting in the Fang. Staples might be best." The gnome grabs a bag of potatoes and drops it into a satchel.

Listening to Sarya's Report
Cheshire nods along with the plan. "My dad is out there somewhere. Hopefully we will cross close to my home. If he is not already among the fallen."

At the Shrine
"If we attack . . .it might be trained to signal. Howl or bark that might draw more hobgoblins. Don't you think we could sneak in. There is a rear entrance." He sees the set of the other's jaws and their preparations and he makes ready himself.

Sarya answered the gnome shaking her head. She said "Sneaking in is ever more difficult with as many people in our party. Besides, it will probably pick the dwarves' smell before we can even get to the house. I would think that, malnourished as it seems to be, it hardly has a sense of duty towards the hobgoblins. Elves with deeper connection to the forest than me could even try to charm it to help us, but I'm afraid we lack this skill for now. That's why I recommend the attack."

He clutches the bony wand and frantically mutters. A small bolt of flame shoots toward the remaining soldier.
