Turn 002 Hungry Hobgoblins

Is there a normal safe rally point for the people of the village?

Seeing the battle engaged Cheshire looks toward the dwarves and admires their courage. He shudders remembering his own days of battle and what little glory they returned him. "Not the time to brood. Young Silvanshe" he says to himself. Before leaving the table he had turned for cover and darts to another table, where an elf is sitting, and goes underneath it.

The same table Kudathalas is at.

Once under the cover of the table the gnome starts to mutter and the air heats making waves around the end of his bony wand. He taps into a wild energy of fate and chance for extra guidance with the press of people and the comotion. He reaches out a hand toward the hobgoblin towering near the table and from close range lets a small bolt of fire go.

Using Tides of Chaos for Advantage. Casts Firebolt.

Spell Attack: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21
Spell Attack Advantage: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
Firebolt Damage: 1d10 ⇒ 2
Wild Magic Chance: 1d20 ⇒ 9

After the gnome lets his bolt go. He slinks back under the table.

I am currently under the table adjacent to Kudathalas and the Hobgoblin. Which would have been 3 squares.

Gazul sank down to his knees, breathing deeply. He put his hand to his side and felt blood. ”Not...good.” He grunted to nobody in particular. Then, much louder he said ”Any healers in here? If so, patch me up. Anyone without a weapon, bloody well grab one now. These idiots don’t need them anymore.” He winced, the act of yelling causing pain to shoot through his body. He could hear the sounds of many more goblinoids outside. He really hoped that someone had a plan. Because if not he was going to say that they should just grab what alcohol they could, leg it and head for the woods.

"Ironfangs!" He spits the words with disgust. "Mercenaries from Molthune."

"Aubrin. Can anyone heal?" Gnome looks concerned for the woman.

"My dad. . . My father. I need to get to him." He moves to a window and looks toward the path to his family home.

Perception: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 1 = 17 Anything to learn?

He shakes his head seeing many folk in need. "Should we send folk to the bridge? Or do we want to rally here and push out toward the bridge and beyond. . . .a large group would draw large response I reckon."

Is there a place that stores supplies like Aubrin seems to suggest that is known by locals? Is running to hide in the Fangwood the town's pre-planned disaster route or is there another place that is likely to have a bunch of people? Sorry for the occ. I just figured that it would be character knowledge that residents might be able to supply.

Turn 003

Kudvathalas watched the second figure drop to the ground, felled by the dwarven axe. With the immediate threat passed, he scanned the room, assessing the situation.

The only injured appeared to be the Dwarf, and the woman, Aubrin. He's still standing, so he's in better shape than she is he thought to himself.

Kudvathalas rushes to the woman's side, and assesses her wounds

Medicine: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7

His heart pounding from the attack, Kudvathalas wasn't able to determine the extent of her injuries.

"I hope this works... Desna, close this woman's wounds. She still has many dreams to share."

Aubrin looked at herself and at Gazul. She sighed, "I can help. I can ask Cayden Cailean for help if you promise to help the people of this town."

assuming Gazul would consent

The priestess quickly grabbed a fallen mug and sprinkled some ale on herself and the dwarf. The ale sank into the flesh, mending it as it was absorbed, leaving them both with a slight buzz.

Aubrin, not ye fully healed, was able to get up and stumble around, "We should go to Oreld's Fine Shop, the Trading Company, and the Riverwood Shrine. I doubt we'll have time for any other place."

Just as they were setting their plans, they heard a commotion in the back room of the inn, "Sounds like someone may have gotten in from the back entrance."

The hobgoblins already carried the spoils of some looting: a backpack stuffed with a heavy crossbow (with 20 bolts); dried goat meat, sheep's cheese, and a jug of sheep's milk worth a total of 5 Provision Points.

1 Provision Point feeds 1 person for 1 day. I'll keep track in the PC's status table.

Hobgoblins battled with townsfolk in every direction, and from the sounds of battle, the whole of Phaendar was under attack. Bodies lay on the ground everywhere, run through by hobgoblin blades and left where they fell. A wolf howled in the distance, its eerie cry echoed by the screams of the dying.

Seeing the last hobgoblin fall, Sarya lost herself in memories of the front. The smells were too familiar. As she came to herself, the elf saw the actions of Aubrin with the beer and was impressed, but she couldn't show it now.

The elf agreed with Aubrin's proposed course of action, after identifying the hobgoblin troops. She said "We should get out the back. There's no sense sacrificing ourselves to the massacre outside. We should find those who are hiding in their houses, help them escape and lead them out. Ideally we should stick together. We might fight supplies on our way, but right now, the kitchen is probably a good start to find food for the next few days."

She put her bow back on her back and moved to the back of the inn with the elegant elven thinblade in hand.

"They are everywhere. They are killing everybody. We need to escape. The Fangwood would provide us with cover, but we would need to cross the bridge, and I can't imagine that has been left unguarded."

As he spoke, he locked eyes briefly with everybody, holding the look for only a few seconds. Near-panic was clear on his face.

elven:

"I am happy to find a fellow of our proud folk, even our distant... more savage cousins. Your wisdom is inspiring." A slight tone of arrogance could be felt in her voice.

She said in the Common tongue "You are right, but the other option would be to go South towards Molthune. If we are to get to the woods, we'll have to cross the bridge no matter how well guarded it is. I can scout it while the rest of you gather the townsfolk. I am not trained in the ancient elven art of stealth, but I am not without some quickness. We can meet back at the back of the inn. Bring Aubrin with you. The sight of her should be enough to encourage the folk to join you."

Already stepping towards the back of the inn, the blond elf said looking back "By the way, I am Sarya of the Vanitahr. It is unfortunate that we must meet under the stars of battle." Those familiar with the elven customs of Kyonin recognized her introduction as a common one in the high elven military.

In the Kitchen

He moves with the others gathering some supplies. The sounds and sight of another Hobgoblin. He whips out his wand again and the same waves of heat buildup around the wand before a mote of fire blasts toward the hobgoblin. The gnome gulps, "Uh-oh." The wand jerks around in the gnome's hand and he struggles to control it but the wand seems to have a strength and mind of its own. Energy of some sort eldritch nature plumes from the wand in a large sparkling cloud.

Casting Firebolt. Forcing a Surge to recharge Tides

[dice=Wild Magic Surge]1d100 Oh good Lord you are welcome DM.

The gnome turns to dive for cover but takes a few steps back as a Unicorn has appeared from the strange sparkling smoke that had come from the wand. The gnome looks shocked and his trail from the wand to the unicorn to the hobgoblin. "Please help."

Cheshire would have gone for cover but I think the sudden appearance of a Unicorn summoned was pretty shocking. Its here for 1 minute under the control of the DM.

OOC: Cheshire; you lost initiative so you act after the hobgoblin. Only Gazul acts before.

In any case, I don't think think a cantrip triggers the wild magic surge. It's only 1st level spells and higher.

And... we need to revisit the table again because I don't want it to be too disruptive (too good or too bad). So the unicorn is probably out but so is turning into a potted plant.

I'll review the table again later today and delete some outcomes from it. Again, I'm Ok with it being 'funny' (bubbles come out of your mouth when you try to speak, your hair falls out, you turn blue, etc.) but nothing too wild.

Thoughts?

No worries on initiative. Am I missing where that is listed before we post our action?

You are right firebolt won't deliver a surge result. Sorry. I will clean up the entry and repost.

I picked a wild magic sorcerer because of the wild results. I am cool with changes to an extent as I don't want to accidentally kill allies but I picked wild magic as I love the idea and I picked a gnome because DND changed the gnome stats making them sub-optimal for wild magic. Only the pathfinder gnome makes this a solid choice stat wise. It was sort of a dream idea for me. I don't want to derail things though. We can talk about it but honestly if the wild is not apart of the sorcerer I would likely made a mage or something else befitting the setting. Beyond my own love of the Wild Magic Sorcerer. I picked it for this setting because of the heavy fey element I thought it really fit.

As for the unicorn in the kitchen was hilarious and its power to disrupt completely in your control so limiting its impact is in your hand. "It kicks over a bucket and runs from the room out into the night" or whatever horrific or beneficial thing you can think of if you want it to be of true consequence.

I was under the impression that a "turn" was covering all the "rounds" each of us were taking. Meaning that during a turn we should take a round of actions and then you would compress our posts with results.

But it looks like "turns" are manageable groups of actions at a time. In this case you wanted those that acted before the Hobgoblin to take their action. And those who were after the Hobgoblin to act as the Hobgoblin's actions might change our plans.

Round 1 Action

Seeing the action unfolding before him. Cheshire wanting to stay clear of the elf's line of fire and get to a better vantage point scrambled up onto the counter and ran along the top of it kicking aside and hopping over kitchen ware sending food and dishes every which way. He throw a hand out to brace himself on the door frame. Leaning over through the doorway he muttered a string of magic words and heat again shimmered in the air above his wand in waves. He took aim down at the hobgoblin from over Grazul's shoulder.

I am not sure if down from over Grazul's shoulder would remove any cover bonus or not. Casting Firebolt.

Using Critical 25 from previous post.

The bolt would have missed the lucky hobgoblin however the greedy creature held a bag of four under his arm tightly. The fire hit the bag square instantly flash burning the flour. Because the bag was held beneath the arm the concussive force of the blast and the flash burning of the flour set the hobgoblins hair and clothing ablaze sending fine blackened powder, and hobgoblin blood about the room.
