When a decades-old secret is exposed, an unassuming local tavern-owner and a close friend of the PCs discovers her birthright is to rule one of the ancient Dragon Empires of Tian Xia—the empire of Minkai. Yet the current ruler of this empire, the mysterious and increasingly cruel Jade Regent, has no intention of giving up his hold over the throne. In order to save Minkai from a would-be tyrant, the PCs must not only escort their friend from Varisia to Tian Xia, braving the frozen horrors of the Crown of the World, but must aid her in gaining the trust and support of a nation on the edge of anarchy.
Hello potential players! I'm looking for a group to embark upon a journey with me! Please review the information below before submitting an application so that you can understand what I'm looking for. I'm planning on keeping the recruitment open for a maximum 7 days. Recruit closes 8:00 PM EDT, Monday 9/23/19. Good luck to everyone and I hope to see you on the other side!
The recruitment worksheet is available here.
NOTE: This game has two players already confirmed for it, they are a wizard and a paladin. I'm looking to add 2-4 more players to these two to form a party of 5-6 players.
1) Read ALL of the information presented in this post before asking questions.
2) Read the player's guide available here.
3) Understand that I want to hear about your your concept more than I want to hear about your crunch. I don't look at stats to determine if you will be selected in this game, the build is not important to me right now because I'm selecting you to build a character to play this game. I'm more concerned with your character background, motivations and goals than I am with mechanics. If you get selected then we'll worry about the stats.
4) An understanding of your experience to both Pathfinder as well as play by post roleplay. I'm interested in your posting style and I'd like you to link me to an example of your games that you want me to see (it can be on other sites that Paizo). I will be up front and let you know that if you do not have a lot of PbP experience then I am predisposed to not select you for an AP. I want to see your resume and make sure you are committing to putting effort into this game.
5) Add a new line to the RECRUITMENT WORKSHEET with all of your information. (Please do not modify other entries that are not your own). If your entire entry is not complete by the deadline then I will not consider your application complete.
Here are my guidelines to determine if this is the PbP for you:
Post as often as is necessary to keep the game moving. This may be once a day or it may be 3 times a day if the action is really moving. I check the boards morning, afternoon and evening and I'd like to see at least 1 post per day from everyone minimally. If you only check the boards every few days, this is NOT the PbP for you.
I am going to do my best to keep this game moving. If it slows down then it's my job to get it moving again and I may push to keep the action rolling. Because of this, if you don't take your turn in combat in a timely fashion and we're waiting on you I may GMPC your action or delay you for that round. If you're going to get upset at with for doing this, this is NOT the PbP for you.
Perseverance is preferred. This is a long-lasting story arc split into multiple chapters with multiple parts per chapter. If you don't think you can devote the time to hang around for at least a year, this is NOT the PbP for you.
Communication is key. Whether it is letting me know of a vacation where you might not have internet access, questions about some minutiae of game play, or simple clarifications; communication is how I gauge how engaged my players are, and how I can tune the adventure so that everyone is enjoying themselves. If you don’t think it’s important to let the other players and GM know when you aren’t going to be able to post for a week, this is NOT the PbP for you.
Roleplaying. I LOVE ROLEPLAYING! It's why I'm here. As mentioned above, I like for my players to take the lead in a goodly portion of the adventure. Cues and clues will be given to prod, but I'd rather you go off on a wild hare chase rather than be spoon-fed copied portions of the AP over and over. If rolling dice is your go to solve each problem or your character is the strong silent type, this is NOT the PbP for you.
Quality posting. Do you know how you get when that hamburger you ordered doesn't look anything like the picture on the poster? That's how I feel about craptastic posts. No one (but you) is forcing you to rush a post out the door, so take your time with it. Obviously there are situations when you are mobile and can't compose a post, I'm not talking about that. If you preferred playstyle is to let the others do the talking, while you toss in one word responses, and like to roll for social skills with no explanations, this is NOT the PbP for you.
HAVE FUN! This is one of the most important, because if you aren't having fun, why are you playing? Of course, this applies to everyone else too. So, don't be a jerk. If you want to have fun, then this is IS the PbP for you!!!
- ROLL 20:The lighting system is often abused in Pathfinder because it is so hard to implement correctly. I run my maps on Roll20 so that I can utilize dynamic lighting. You will see what your character can see!
- DISCORD: While we play our game on Paizo's forums, I will be establishing a discord group for OOC communication. My preference is to use this group to send you a quick message or answer questions quicker than on the forums. It's not a requirement that you join the group, but it's my preference that you do.
- CHARACTER ALIAS : Create an alias on the forum for your character and populate it with their role, background, description and motivations.
- ROLE (CLASS INFO) :
What is your character contributing to the party? Are you a melee attacker? Are you crowd control with lots of skills? Are you the face and divine caster? If you know your class and archetypes, this is the place to list them. More important that though, I need to tell me how you project your role in the party to play out. I will be grouping similiar roles together and selecting among types to try and build a fairly balanced group out of it.- BACKGROUND :
A character background will allow me to RP with your character a little better, understand their motives, and even tailor hints or dialogue to them specifically. I will look upon those characters with a detailed background more favorably than those with two lines of "I was born, my parents were killed, I was an orphan, I want to kill things for revenge". Why are you in Roslar's Coffer? Be creative! Explain those traits, feats, skills and class features your class has!- DESCRIPTION :
A physical description will allow you and the other party members to visualize your character.
RACES
- Core are preferred, some Featured races will be allowed.
- ALLOWED RACES - CORE: Dwarves, Elves, Gnomes, Half-Elves, Half-Orcs, Halflings, Humans
- ALLOWED RACES - FEATURED: Aasimars, Catfolk, Dhampirs, Ifrits, Oreads, Ratfolk, Sylphs, Tengus, Tieflings
ABILITY SCORES
- 20 point buy.
- If you are dumping a stat I fully expect you to RP your character to be lacking that ability.
CLASSES:
- All Paizo-published classes and archetypes permitted, but I advise against gunslingers. Ask GM approval if concerned.
- I'd like to avoid animal companions, familiars, followers or mounts. If you take a class that uses them, please select an alternate type to replace these class features.
- This game has two players already confirmed for it, they are a wizard and a paladin.
FEATS
- Most Paizo-published feats are permitted, no third party feats allowed.
- Crafting is allowed, but any custom gear requires GM approval.
TRAITS
- Two traits total from Paizo-published sources, one of which must be a campaign trait from this AP. You can find the player's guide linked above.
- You may optionally take a drawback to add a third trait, however, if you take a drawback you better RP the drawback in your characters personality and expect I will try to do so as well.
SKILLS
- We will be using the Background Skills system from Unchained.
- In addition to the background skills, I'm giving you a one time bonus of 2 additional free skill points to be used in either Craft or Profession)
GOLD
- Max gold for your class.
HIT POINTS
- Max per Hit Dice at level one, 1/2 HD + 1 thereafter.
ALIGNMENT
- No Evil alignments.
- Read the Alignment section of the player's guide before making your selection.
RELIGION
- Characters may worship any deity but must be within one step of their alignment.
OTHER STUFF
- XP: The group will level up at the same time based on when I feel it is appropriate within the campaign. I will not be handing out XP individually for encounters.
I've been a Pathfinder GM for many years now and have run hundreds of different adventures ranging from Quests, Society Play, Modules and numerous Adventure Paths. I run live games, virtual table top games and play by post games with my local group of friends as well as for complete strangers. I've been on these forums for enough years now to learn what the right balance of games is for me and I'm ready to take on a new group to start an adventure. I do my best to make myself fully available to you through my email, discord, or whatever method you wish to reach me.
I enjoy roleplaying more than rolling the dice and I only play this game because I love the story that we create together.

This sounds good. I have some ideas, I'll see what I'll submit. I can't change your opinion on Changelings I presume? Have a concept there I've been wanting to play for a while.
Could we get some more information about the Wizard and the Paladin? What races are they, which trait did they pick? It might be nice if we could forge a bit of a connection with them as well.

Marek Aduaine |

I'm thinking about a Human Hunter (Forester Archetype), can't really decide on whether he's a ranged or melee character yet. Probably a ranged character though.
An apprentice woodworker named Marek out to see the world, mainly ranged support with teamwork feats. If I do switch to melee build, he'll switch bowmaking to poleturning and take teamwork feats appropriately
His connection to forests makes him more alert there even imbuing him with a small amount of magic, a talent that attracted the attention of Shalelu while he was some fifteen years old. She taught him to focus his attunement and taught more tips and tricks for survival inside the woods.
Of course as someone who knows his trees and his timber, Marek is also trained and skilled in using it as well. His woodworking mentor, a masterwork carpenter in Sandpoint, taught him hom to build and repair simple work like doors and windows. Shalelu taught him a little bit of repairing bows and making arrows. He himself started to sculpt little wooden figurines, showing off many of the natural beasts and plants he has encountered.
Now at the age of 22, word reaches Marek that Shalelu might be leaving on the road. When approaching his mentor and his boss with the loggers to ask if he could accompany her, they both were already informed and asked if Marek could join by Shalelu herself.
The reasons: "He's a young man that needs to learn the ways of the world more than he does here. He's got more potential, certainly for crafting if he learns from more masters."
His mentor could only agree with this, though as Marek was packing his stuff he gave him some strong advice:"See the world and learn, find more different kinds of wood to work with. Discover what you want to make and learn what wood best serves your needs. Above all else, live more and grander than you can here, this is a once in a lifetime opportunity."
Sample post 1 Burahl Narnec
Sample Post 2 Mavor Asku
Mavor is one of my favourite characters I've made.

You know, you try to be sure to check and make sure you don't screw up your super-important top of the feed recruitment post, and then you go and put Roslar's Coffer in it.
Whoops.
Yes, that is a remnant of my Tyrant's Grasp recruitment. We will NOT be starting in Roslar's Coffer. Thanks for catching that! :)
I can't change your opinion on Changelings I presume? Have a concept there I've been wanting to play for a while.
I wouldn't say that I'm hard-set against changelings. I don't have a lot of experience with them, so I'll do some reading on them and get back to you. Consider that a maybe.
Could we get some more information about the Wizard and the Paladin? What races are they, which trait did they pick? It might be nice if we could forge a bit of a connection with them as well.
I'll let the wizard and paladin chime in and speak for themselves.
Also would ask. I love wizards, and have several build ideas that could be used, which would not interfere with another's build. Alternatly, an Arcanist could be interesting.
Who doesn't love a wizard? I didn't say you can't apply as one, but you should know that the likelihood of getting selected as a wizard when we have a wizard is probably less than average.

Marek Aduaine |

Question DM, I envision Marek as an apprentice woodworker at this moment, but he's not a seasoned adventurer like the rest. Keeping that in mind, he doesn't really know he can cast magic, to him it feels more like an intuition.
So his initial spells will be more inconspicuous than immediately combat ready. As the journey goes on, he will learn more about his own magical gifts and grow into the life of an adventurer.
Is that okay as a concept?
Actually, the same also goes for his Feats. Along the way he will be more combat-ready than he is now.

Grankless |

Dotting for interest! Regarding R20: will you be posting maps in this thread/the Discord, or will we be expected to be in there for map visualization? I ask because much of my posting will likely be from work, where Roll 20 is definitely blocked.
Will likely play a Cleric, I think. Maybe an Occultist or Archaeologist Bard... Time to brew a concept.

I'll take that as my cue. Hiya, folks. I'd be the aforementioned wizard. For those curious, Sam's profile should offer just about any information on the character you might be wanting, both mechanical and otherwise. But for those who might appreciate a quick run-down (and because said profile is pretty lengthy):
- Very young human Wizard -
- Transmuter focusing on support, control & save-or-sucks as appropriate -
- Local kid with ties to Gandethus the headmaster and Parooh the cartographer for those reading up on Sandpoint -
- Has a misguided ultimate goal of wooing Shalelu the elven warden -
I can't in good conscience, however, suggest anyone to tie their own submissions to Sam or Lor-Sinn the paladin above in the hope of this raising their chances of being picked. Please submit whatever character you wish to play. I for one just feel uncomfortable at the thought of me in any way dictating what or how you play. I'm sure we can figure out any such relations if appropriate in discussion prior to the game's start.

I think my submission is pretty complete. Ruka can be viewed here
The short version: Ruka Kaijitsu is Ameiko's younger sister. They're not particularly close due to bad family history, but Ruka at least wants to be. She's currently trying to reconnect with Ameiko and would like to follow her on a new adventure.
Ruka is a human slayer. In combat she'll be fighting in melee with a reach weapon. Out of combat she's a halfway-decent skill monkey and rogue substitute.
In terms of PBP history I've only been on the boards for about six months, but I've been (and still am) active in several games. One of my favorites was this Strange Aeons game, although sadly our GM disappeared shortly into it. (My character was Saiya. The whole intro sequence is a lot of fun to read.)
Please let me know if you have any questions, comments, or suggestions!

Man you guys sure got busy today!
Interested. Thinking of putting together a Kami Medium.
I’m aware that this archetype eventually gets a familiar. Hopefully that won’t be too much of a problem.
Let me explain myself briefly here.
Because finding PbP games for players is soooo hard I tend to try and help everyone out and take more players than the AP is written for, usually six. Usually we lose a player or two eventually and it winds down to about five on a regular basis.
When I do this I exclude classes that further skew the action economy in the favor of the players. To this end, I particularly do not like having more than six members in the party including things like familiars and companions. If I was going to take someone with a pet then I'd be inclined to reduce the total player count of players I was recruiting by one, which I don't want to do.
Mind if I use a placeholder alias?
I do not!
I still need to research roll20 as I've no idea what it is.
Roll20 is a virtual tabletop. Instead of just showing you a static picture of a map and letting you move your picture around, I can create a map with walls to restrict your moment and per-character lighting to show your character what you see rather everyone seeing everything.
Any particular feelings for or against ganzis?
I have to be honest and say I know nothing of ganzis. What source book are they in that I can read more about them?
I think my submission is pretty complete.
Please let me know if you have any questions, comments, or suggestions!
Don't forget to add your character to the recruitment worksheet when you are done. This is the list I'm going to use when I review characters. I added a link to the worksheet to the top of the page.
Shadowlord, how do you feel about romance in your games between PCs or PC/NPC?
Oh boy, what a subject! I love this kind of stuff. Maybe I'm a weirdo, but I particularly enjoy this type of interaction in my games. I feel like it creates another layer of depth for the characters that helps fuel their desires and motivations. At least half of my characters that I play have some form of in game relationship at some point during the AP. Even if they don't last, the animosity or feelings caused by it once provide insight for me as a player on how to build their character personality.

FYI, the link in the Application Process section leads to the wrong worksheet, so you should use the link at the top of the page instead. A lesson I have now learned :)

A player after my own heart. :) :)

I updated the incorrect sheet with a link to the correct location. A bit of a patchwork job since I can't edit the post, but at least it will prevent that from happening again! Thank you for letting me know!

Ah I understand. In stead of a Spiritualist, I'll submit a kinetcist. While I'm choosing my element, I'd like to ask how prevalent undead are in the game? I'm thinking of either Aether×2, Void ×2 or Void/Wood for a light/dark dichotomy.

I can't really see that argument for a normal familiar. Eidelons and some druid companions sure.
Even if not combat oriented, a familiar still represents more actions for the players. Without considering that one could get an improved familiar that can wield wands and cast magic on their own, even a normal monkey could fetch the mage a potion, or a wand, effectively giving him more combat power by not having to 'waste' actions to do these stuff.

Relisha Tamm |

This is the alias for Itzi's submission. Her background and appearance are in her profile.
Tiefling Life Oracle - Follower of Sarenrae
I picture her as a healer/buffer and eventual face as she matures.
If it wasn't clear from the background in her profile, Relisha has a martyr complex instilled by her parents. Hence, the plan is to create her as a life-link oracle - taking other's pain on as her own.
Ameiko and the caravan leaving Sandpoint is the impetus Relisha needs to make a break from her toxic parents and possible grow into a complete person.
It would be neat to see a relationship blossom between her and Ameiko. It could potentially give her a greater sense of self-worth and allow her to see herself as something other than a whipping-girl.
DM Brainiac's War for the Crown: Table 1
We're near the end of the 5th book. My character there - Zhi - has had a short term relationship with the tank of the group and is currently married to the mesmirist (and four months pregnant). :)
There are over 6k posts in that game currently, but here's a sample. It didn't further the game, but we spent a lot of time with inter-character interaction. Even with all the personal fluff in that game, we're a couple of books ahead of Table 2 that started the same time we did.
No, that post isn't entirely 'G' rated, but I can post to whatever rating you'd like the game to be.
Here's another (more angsty) sample in a different game where I'm playing a Undine Oracle:
I love games that encourage posts like that. :)
It's rare for me to post less than two or three times per day. In the games I'm in, I have no problems pushing the game forward. In fact, I've been asked by at least one friend to let other people have a chance so I've been trying to be aware of that.
