As the group begins to try and collect themselves you see Vahlos sword, lying in the grass, begins to glow. The glow is repeated on the Wall of Names as one of the names is briefly illuminated. It flares to life and then dies. As it does so the spectral image of a long dead Pathfinder emerges from the wall.
It was there, I know it was, I was so close, so close, if only I could go back and try again, I could find it this time, I am certain, certain I could. It was just within my grasp. It could have been mine. It should have been mine. No, whats that, no, no, arrrrgh!
The figure heads towards Sir Ambrose, passing through the wall. It reaches out to touch him. Its spectral fingers reach through Sir Ambrose who has a moment of momentary confusion before it passes.
However, the constant babbling of the unquiet spirit may be distracting.
If you start your turn within 60' of the spirt and are not deaf give me a will save. I also need to know if you are wearing a wayfinder.

Will(Gaius): 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (4) + 14 = 18.
Obviously, my bonus is 10 higher if this is mind-affecting.

Will: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (10) + 13 = 23.
Confused by what is going on, Sir Ambrose stands, and retreats to Gaius, going up and over the wall.
This will provoke an AoO. Two, if it has combat reflexes.
Valrar Altimari II |
Valrar kips up and soars over to where the party is congregating. "Is this thing okay to fight? Seems to be after us either way."

Alie Saechel |
Alie is deafened for another few seconds so she didn’t hear the awful droning of the creature from the wall. She was not wearing a wayfinder. However she stayed close to the Oracle, hoping he could find a way to help against the undead spirit.
She moves adjacent to Sir Ambrose and casts Heroism on him, hoping to sharpen his teeth and claws for whatever was to come.
Deafness check 1d100 ⇒ 78
Remember to add +2 to all Sir Ambrose’s good stuff.
Valrar Altimari II |

Shump stands and moves next to the Wall of Names and the sword.

He taps his chest.

Diplomacy: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21
Anyone know if the Sword is evil? ie unholy
GMAndrewW |
I will post a full update later tonight but I just wanted to pick up a couple of things. I dont think Sir Ambrose can get quite so close with one move action given he has to go up and over the wall. With haste his speed is only 70. Alie, you will need to stand up first before moving leaving you without the actions to cast Heroism. Feel free to change your action. Flying doesnt get around taking an action to get up off the ground. Shump, I have moved you closer to the wall of names to where the helmet landed.
Valrar, the ambassador recognises this as some sort of unquiet spirit of a former pathfinder. It is an incorporeal undead creature. I am treating them as rare given they are unique to the module. The ambassador knows four things about them. As yet no-one knows anything about the sword.

Can we "see"? Did the attack harm Sir Ambrose?
Maybe we have to put it to rest? That's probably out of character knowledge

The ambassador can communicate that these are incorporeal undead spirits. Their babbling can distract you if you fail the will save causing you to become flat footed. If they touch you they can drain your ambition, causing charisma damage. Wearing a wayfinder provides an extra defence agaiinst them (+5 deflection to AC) but causes a penalty to saves against their babble and touch attack (-2). Lastly they have fairly substantial channel resistance.
Gaius Plinius Secundus |
With a frown, Gaius 5' steps, and casts a few spells.

Gaius brings more healing to the group. Meanwhile, near the Wall of Names where the Decemvirate Helm fell, red lightning crackles violently. A storm of energies engulfs the area and as it fades a grey skinned halfling appears.
Enough, now we will end this he snarls as he tries to strike down Shump. The first blow misses but the second conncets, sending rivening black energy down the blade and necrotising his flesh. The remaining attacks cannot get past his heavy armour.
Shump takes 46 physical damage, 21 fire damage and 32 negative energy. As a note, all prior smites have expired, both Shumps smite on Vahlo and his on Shump, Wynn and Alie. He has smited Shump again this round.
Just as a note, the trees on the map do block movement, you need to go around or over them. The storm and rain are still in effect.
Vahlo, now in his real undead form, smites Shump and then full attacks him.

sorry if I'm daft? But is the GHOST the halfling or did the ghost look different?
@GM aren't the smites in effect? Just wondering "The smite evil effect remains until the target of the smite is dead or the next time the paladin rests and regains her uses of this ability"
if not smite again.
Shump turns to the Decemvirate member.
"I think not!" He turns to the tiger. "Ambrose can you grab him?" then to the rest of the party. "What in the nine hells did Gaius say?"
Can we "debuff" him? Maybe there's a clue in the Wall? I don't think I can take a full attack from the guy
Shump swings at the halfling.

The ghost is still there, they are two separate creatures. Vahlo emerges from his remains and the Decemvirate Helm. The scenario specifies that smite and similar effects end. You did actually kill Vahlo, the ritual just speeds up his rejuvenation.
Shumps first blow strikes tue but Vahlo deflects the rest from him.
Vahlo takes 36 damage as your smite damage is doubled on the first hit as he is actually undead. I also think you are missing a haste attack there.

Alie flies just to the left of Gaius, having figured out what the spell was that he cast. Keeping that pesky those away would be really helpful. ”We need to help Shump! He’s all alone against that awful undead!”
She knew that her large feline friend could do the most damage, so she casts Heroism on it, hoping it could get to the undead quickly.
Could someone move me on the map, pleasee? Remember to add the heroism into Ambrose’s attacks!

Hopefully that succeeds. If there isn't space in the square I'm moving to, will be 1 to the right and remove flanking bonus. Was Vahlo halfling height before we killed him? Now parrying is easier, at least.
Valrar soars off to Shump's aid, trusting Gaius to hold the other spirit at bay.

He then 5' steps sideways, and up.
Wynnreyell Moonsilver |
Wynn glides just above the wall and gets with in firing range of the ghost and fires an arrow with a green tinted arrow head.
Is the wind penalty in play still, if it is just -6 from the to hit

So this ruling is up for debate. Do you allow ghost salted weapons to crit incorporeal creatures? The reason I ask is the weapon ability ghost touch does allow you to crit them, however, ghost salt says it allows you to do full damage, but says now where that it acts as ghost touch. Will put crit information down below just in case.

GMAndrewW |
@Valrar, Vahlo appeared to be a human previously, I have been adjusting your parry values to account for the fact that he is actually small
Valrar sprints over to aid Shump, striking Vahlo in a sensitive spot. Sir Ambrose shreds the spirit into ghostly pieces and then steps away.
He cannot 5' step upwads, upwards movement is at half speed
Wynn flies closer and lets fly an arrow at Vahlo but once again his buckler snaps into place, deflecting the arrow away.
I redirected your attack to Vahlo since the spirit is dead. For the record, I dont think Ghost Salt allows you to crit incorporeals.
As the group turn to deal with Vahlo his sword burns again, letters on it flare and another name of the Wall lights up and fades away, producing another spirit. This one flies up to Shump to provide its master with a flank. Reaching out its fingers trail through his back and Shump feels his will falter.
Shump takes 1 charisma damage. This is a new spirit so if you start your turn within 60' of it I need a will save

Half speed, but it is not difficult terrain... shouldn't you be able to 5' step? This is mostly just out of academic curiosity; either way, I don't really care - the movement doesn't, truthfully, matter.

Cursing, Gaius recasts Quickened Divine Favor upon Sir Ambrose, and moves around to a better position.
GMAndrewW |
OK, fair enough
Vahlo turns and strikes down Shump with a single blow. Shumps ravaged body crumples to the ground. He then turns on Valrar but cannot penetrate his defences and takes a severe skewering in turn. As the blow lands the Decemvirate Helm erupts in a torrent of negative energy which engulfs the area. Fortunately for Valrar he is protected by death ward and he remains unharmed. Gaius is not so lucky
Shump is killed, Valrar crits Vahlo for 54 damage. He doesnt take the charisma damage but is staggered for his next turn. Gaius takes 17 damage.
He then takes a step back, grinning down at the corpse of Shump and glancing over to Wynn, levelling his sword at him and mouthing, you're next!

If it is negative energy, I have resistance 10 to that...?
Gaius winces when he sees Shump go down.

Wynn stares upward, following where the arrow came from,"Good shot. We will sort you out next." Wynn shout up over his shoulder.
Wynn turns his attention back to Vahlo. Unleashes a hail of arrows. "You can not block them all" He begins firing, going for center mass instead of more fatal shots.

Alies spell rages across Vahlo and his body seems to become a little less hardy.
Wynn unleashes a barrage of arrows at Vahlo but his claim that he cannot block them all proves not to be true.
However, between Valrar and Sir Ambrose they bring the rogue Decemvirate member down, which only leaves the rogue spirit.
I am going to call the combat at this point as the spirit cannot really do very much. We stick with initiative to see if Gaius can save Shump before he gets out of breath of life range. Its fortunate that Vahlo had used all of his smites as if he kills someone he can raise them as a Mohrg on his turn by expending smites.
Gaius is up
Gaius Plinius Secundus |
... That is... less than ideal :-/ Perfectly reasonable for this sort of scenario, but still... Damn!
Gaius rushes over to Shump (thanks to Haste), and channels healing energy into Shump's lifeless body, trying the kindle the last embers of life into a full-blown flame!
Breath of Life: 5d8 + 16 ⇒ (6, 5, 8, 6, 6) + 16 = 47.

Wynn shouts back up to Torch. "Ok flame face, get down here and explain what's going on around here"
Alie Saechel |
”Um, I’m not sure that’s the greatest idea, Wynn. We’ve half dead,a. Picking a fight with him right now could ge really bad for us! And I think he helped us against that undead monster.”
GMAndrewW |
Gaius recognises that Vahlo was, in truth, a Graveknight, a form of martial lich. He knows that such creatures bond themselves to their armour and cannot be destroyed while it still exists. A greater complication here appears to be that Vahlo has also bonded with the Decemvirate Helm and cannot be destroyed while it still survives. As an artifact you do not know how to destroy such an item.
As the group pulls themselves together Grandmaster Torch emerges from the trees. Carrying a bow, wearing a glowing green jewel around his neck, and showing signs of having fought numerous battles, Grandmaster Torch emerges with two beleaguered half-orc bodyguards in chainmail. The infamous information broker quickly examines the scene before tossing his bow aside. Hold! Whether you consider me friend or foe, I am not here to fight, nor do I intend to flee. Stay your attacks until our common enemy is defeated; he is fallen but not gone. Torch motions to the Decemvirate Helm. You know what we’re dealing with, what must be done?
Wynnreyell Moonsilver |
"So all of his previous attacks and underhanded tactics against the society as a whole forgive him." Wynn says losing his patience for a brief moment, before taking what Alie says into consideration.
"Very well. I will put this aside until the true threat is managed." He looks over the Decemvirate helmet, completely clueless. "How about dropping it in a volcano? It worked for a cursed ring."
Alie Saechel |
”Could I just breathe acid on it five or six times? That might melt it away,” Alie says, confounded about how to deal with these artifacts.
Valrar Altimari II |
"You're right, we'll have time for you later," Valrar says. "But continue playing your cards like this and I'm fine with you. Just keep from attacking other Pathfinders. When will Vahlo next rise?"
