Altovin groans again under the link between himself and the Tengu.
He taps himself with his wand of Cure Light Wounds.
CLW: 1d8 + 1 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 1 + 1 + 2 = 12
"Ylosani, you are under a great deal of pain...my link is letting me take some of your burden on to myself but...it does hurt a great deal. Heh." he says pained but trying to laugh it off so the others do not worry.

![]() |

Nah, not worried about it at the moment.
Continue the retreat! Romulus shouts. This fire has grown to much! We need to let it burn out! If we're lucky, it'll take that THING with it!
He looks to Altovin.
Just keep standing soldier, we'll get you patched up soon...

Yanda now downs a targetting admixture so she will not spread the fire any more when she bombs this thing.
"What was in that pile? I've never seen a fire catch like that. Alchemist's fire?"

![]() |

Ylosani goes quite still, moving into a stance with his sword in a defensive position before him but with his head tilted as he listens. Everything is still a blur, but now it a bright blur instead of a dark blur and he believes the blindness he's experiencing is about to fade so, he holds.
Holding until the blindness fades. I think that will let me interrupt Green's turn since it will happen before it acts. If so, then the below attack comes before it acts. If not, the below attack comes after it acts (assuming it doesn't disable me, somehow.)
As soon as he has enough vision to spot his opponent, he lashes out.

Fire spread?
Altovin heals himself of much of the damage that he has absorbed from his connection with Ylosani.
Yanda drinks her targeting admixture and looks around to see if she can spot any source of water. To her great surprise, she looks at the statue that she is standing next to and realizes that if she tilts its arm, its pitcher will fill with water. It is a move action to get water from the pitcher, and a standard action use the water to put out the fire in a single square.
A word of explanation: I was describing your current situation to two friends last night, one of whom has run this level and the other has played it. The one who has run it asked me whether you couldn't simply get water from the statue, which he recalled being in a pool. However the description simply says "A statue of a woman with a water urn stands in the hallway" with no mention of water being there or not. So, it wasn't really an oversight on my part to not tell you that there was a water source there previously, but I also think there's no way you are getting to the kitchen (where there's definitely water!), so I'm going to interpret this as the statue sort of functions like a water fountain that you can use, even if it wasn't immediately apparent when you passed it earlier. In short: you now have a water source to try to put out the fire.
Ylosani pauses for a moment. Just before Green is about to attack him, his vision returns, and he quickly slashes out at the monstrosity. Unfortunately, his blow glances off of its tough skin.
Green fire dmg: 1d6 ⇒ 4 The fire continues to burn the poor monster as it stands amidst the flames and looks jealously at the Pathfinders in their non-fiery ease.
It spits at Ylosani again. This is a ranged attack, so it provokes an AoO from Ylosani.

Altovin's lifelink transfers some of Ylosani's wounds to him.
Yanda, Altovin, Ylosani, and Romulus are up! Note that Green is currently grappling Ylosani.

![]() |

What Ylosani does next is very untoward, which is why he saves it only for moments of desperation. But the thing is still in the fire and the fire may be doing more damage to it than anything else so he wants to keep it there.
He wiggles in the creature's grip one more time to make sure he can't get free then jerks his head back before slamming his beak down at it.
Bite: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11

GM Abraham |

Ylosani's bite cannot penetrate the creature's thick hide.
I goofed and forgot that you convert 1 point from each attack to non-lethal, so the previous 3 bite attacks that hit would have done 6 lethal, 3 non-lethal. All of that non-lethal would have been healed along with 5 lethal by Altovin's lifelink (what a great combo!), so the net dmg total for Ylosani (after life link) should be 12 (lethal) dmg and 0 (non-lethal) dmg. I'll update the next time I update the status block.

Romulus expertly sends an arrow flying towards the monstrous mouther. It strikes home! Against any other creature Romulus' arrow would have found its way right into its brain, but unfortunately the beast has an amorphous body that is malleable and shapeless and the arrow does nothing. Yes, I do allow each PC one reroll per level. Unfortunately the creature is immune to critical hits. And the arrow doesn't get past its DR. A very sad fate for 2 nat 20s!

However, the fire continues to burn at the mouther, charring its skin.

The gibbering mouther manages to engulf the poor tengu warrior, doing grievous harm to him and knocking him unconscious. However, the very effort of swallowing its prey also seems to be more than the mouther can sustain, as it too falls over unconscious in the fire! It was staggered - the act of swallowing Ylosani knocked it unconscious. :-)
Meanwhile, back in the entry way, the two guards reload and again fire at Heccuba.
A rules explanation in case anyone has any questions about this: the two guards fired at Heccuba using readied actions, which by Pathfinder rules means that they then move to the spot just *before* the person whose action triggered their readied actions (in this case, they move to just before Heccuba in the order, since it was her moving into the area that triggered their attacks). Since she had used all of her movement getting there, she wasn't able to move away on her turn, and now they get to fire - again - before she has a chance to react. This may seem unfair - and I argued against it strenuously the first time I encountered this rule, but it is the way that Pathfinder is written, for better or worse. However, she is no longer flat-footed to her attacks.

Although one of the guards misses, the other aims more carefully and manages to plunge a crossbow bolt into the already wounded witch. As she falls, lapsing into unconsciousness, she perceives foul poison beginning to flow into her veins.
It's now Heccuba's turn...
Heccuba stabilization check: 1d20 + 1 - 1 ⇒ (14) + 1 - 1 = 14 Heccuba is still unconscious, but now stable.
Heccuba Fort vs poison: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19 No longer poisoned.
However, the hardy Heccuba quickly manages to stabilize herself and fight off the poison before it can do any real damage.
The infernal healing spell continues to slowly heal Book.
Fire spread?: 1d20 ⇒ 10
The fire continues to slowly spread into the room the mouther came out of.
Start of Round 18!
Altovin's life link continues to work its magic on Ylosani, who awakens inside the belly of a beast that is literally on fire. Although Ylosani is once again conscious, he is staggered and in tight quarters. Ylosani, by my count you are at 0 hp, so you are conscious but staggered. You are engulfed (similar to the swallow whole rules) which means you are grappled. You can try to escape with a grapple check (not difficult since the mouther is unconscious), which would put you back in its mouth, or you can try to cut yourself free with a light slashing or piercing weapon. Either, however, is a standard action, which will then knock you out (and you'll be in the fire). Incidentally, while you can feel the heat of the fire outside the mouther, you are not currently taking fire damage being in its belly. Hope this all makes sense and feel free to ask any questions.
Yanda, Altovin, Ylosani, and Romulus are up!

![]() |

Altovin makes haste to see what the commotion is coming from behind letting the link with Ylosani help him.
"I am going to check on Heccuba! Please get our tengu friend free." he says while moving.
Double-Move. Courage goes with.

![]() |

Is there a foot or something Yanda could reach Ylosani with a CLW? Or could she yank him out and place him in a non fiery square with he average strength? Not going to try if it is less that a 50% chance. Or what are the chances of pulling the beast with Ylosani out of the fire? Looking to figure out what my best odds are here of rescuing the 'cave' delving feathered friend.

![]() |

Yeah, I wasn't sure the best way to do it either. I mean he will slowly heal inside of the beast safely since he isn't taking the fire damage. 5 a turn till he busts out. Lol.

The last thing Ylosani sees is the gaping maw of the multi-mouthed creature. Then, he loses consciousness.
When he awakens, he finds himself in a dark, unpleasantly warm place with very little noise. It's almost peaceful, but not quite.
His first assumption is that he has finally met the fate that he cheated so many years earlier.
He is determined to meet it with the same stoicism with which he has faced his life since that day. And at least he still has his sword.
He crosses his arms and waits for eternity.
Pass.

Good question. Ylosani is fully swallowed, so there's no way to reach him with CLW, but life link will continue to work (I looked it up again and it seems pretty clear that there's no line of effect required, or even a range limitation. Pretty amazing ability. I wonder there aren't more life oracles who don't just stay back at the tavern after setting up their life links!). You could try to cut the mouther open and free him that way, but that would require first coup de gracing the creature. (I'll rule that CDG won't incur any fire dmg to you since you are in a separate non-fire square (though the 20% concealment still applies), but if you kill it and then want to try to butcher it to get Ylosani out, I'll say that that will require you to take 1d6 fire dmg for working in the adjacent fire square. Hope that seems reasonable. Alternatively, you could drag the mouther (and Ylosani) out of the fire, and then work on CDG and then butcher the creature. It's unconscious, so no CMB check required to drag it - it's just a question of how much weight can you drag. The mouther weighs... hmm, just went to look it up and apparently that is not defined. Anyone have an opinion about what's a fair weight? It's a medium aberration. Ylosani, what do you weigh? Finally, note that - in character - you have no way of knowing what Ylosani's status is in the belly of the creature, though I'll say that a) you do know that life link will keep working and b) you think it's likely that the fire cannot harm him as long as he is inside the creature - it would be fun to say that he starts to cook in there, like an oven, but even I have limits... :-)

![]() |

I'm just glad it's a mouther and not a tophet, which I just read about and swallows is immune to fire but applies the damage to anything it swallows.

GM Abraham |

Yeah, fire immunity on this thing would be real tough. As it is, it's a CR 5 without considering all the environmental stuff and other problems you've been facing. Fortunately, it's clear that the damage you took when it swallowed you is from its mouths feeding on you inside, so I feel comfortable saying that it stops once it falls unconscious (as opposed to digestive acids or something that would arguably keep going).

![]() |

Yanda approaches the unconscious beast and starts tugging on it, trying to pull it and the hidden ally.
"Where did everyone go? I could use some help here!"
I've left Yanda in her starting position, but I'm thinking whe would move forwad 5' then back 5' as she pulls the pair out. Or 10' if these are move actions instead of standard actions.

Start of Round 19
Altovin's life link once again transfers some of Ylosani's wounds to the sturdy gnome. Back in the antechamber, he sees Heccuba lying unconscious, but no sign of what or who may have done this to her, save a single crossbow bolt protruding from her.
Strengthened by Altovin's mystical assistance, Ylosani feels noticeably better. He is still badly wounded, with significant CON damage, and he remains grappled in the belly of a stinky and dying and afire gibbering mouther, but he is no longer staggered. You can try to escape from its belly either by escaping its grapple (its CMD is significantly reduced due to being unconscious) which will put you back in its mouth (but since its unconscious it can't hold onto you in that case), or by cutting yourself out with a light slashing or piercing weapon (DR will still apply).
Romulus completes his coup de grace against the mouther. Note that the mouther is immune to critical hits, so I'll re-roll the coup de grace damage as a normal attack's damage.
dagger: 1d4 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1
The dagger appears to do nothing to the mouther's tough skin. It did not get past its DR. Since it took no damage I think the coup de grace has no effect.
Romulus, you still have a move action available.
Yanda, Altovin, Ylosani, and Romulus (standard action used already) are all up!

![]() |

Question, typically to drag someone I would need to use a standard action and make an attack via CMB. She is unconscious and would likely be willing if conscious. So...how would I determine how far I get to drag? Since there is no check going on I can just drag the movement I have left? Which would be 10 ft.

GM Abraham |

No CMB check required, just a weight limitation (I think 5x your maximum weight load). I'm not sure how far you can drag her but will figure it out if that's what you are going to try to do?

That was the plan to drag her away from the room and out of immediate danger. Currently at 43.4 lbs out of 131.25 lbs (heavy load) according to HeroLab math.

Fire spread?
Altovin moves forward 10' to catch ahold of Heccuba and suddenly a crossbow bolt comes whizzing at his head!
Purple crossbow vs flat-footed: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (12) + 3 = 15Fortunately, his aim is not very good.
Yellow crossbow vs flat-footed: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
And his friend's aim is even worse.
I've put them back on the map now that you can see them and moved their position in the initiative order to account for their readied actions being triggered.
Altovin, you still have 10' of your movement and a standard action available. Since you have to drag her on the stairs as well I'll just say that you can get her as far as the door back into the guardroom. Fair?
Yanda, Altovin, Ylosani, and Romulus are up!

Yes, that works perfectly for me.
"Oh...how did I know I was going to get shot at by them too! Let's get you away from here..." he says as a bolt whizzes by him while crouching down to drag her out.
Once he gets her as far as he can he calls back.
"Two more back here shooting from behind that gate...knocked Heccuba out..." he calls back down the hall.

GM Abraham |

Updated the map with what seems like fair new positions for Heccuba and Altovin.

With all the jostling and pulling and...smells, it slowly dawns on Ylosani that he may not be dead after all. And if he is, that is no reason not to fight the demons here just as hard as he did while on the Material Plane. That must be why he has his sword and armor.
He starts to wiggle and wrestle his way out of the fleshy prison he's in.

Yanda takes the opportunity to drag the mouther further from the fire.

Romulus glares at the useless knife. Yes, let it lapse.
Can somebody get him out of there?
He moves to keep up with Yanda.

00:01 || Round 19

Fire spread?
Forgot to apply this before - thanks for the reminder, Yanda
Yanda fire dmg: 1d6 ⇒ 3Altovin drags the unconscious Heccuba (and her unconscious dinosaur tucked into her robes) to safety, though the stairs are a bit of a bumpy ride.
Ylosani struggles to free himself from his dark new home and manages - barely - to birth himself out of the creature. Smoke-filled air has probably never smelled so sweet!
Yanda drags the mouther further away from the fire and Romulus moves in the same direction, while ending his countersong. Romulus, five rounds of bardic performance used in total.
And, with that, a full two minutes after the battle began (Back on February 10!), a calm quiet settles over the battlefield and the pathfinders slowly realize that they have emerged victorious! The crackle of the fire continues in the corridor, but otherwise there is no further sign of any enemies to be seen or heard. If the group returns to the landing by the stairs, they realize that the two guards that attacked Heccuba and Altovin have retreated and are nowhere to be seen.
With the battle finally over, the Pathfinders will have no great difficulty using the water they found in the fountain to - eventually - put out the fire in the corridor, if they wish to do so.
Congratulations, pathfinders! That was the longest fight I've ever been in, on either side of the GM screen. I was never too worried about you, but there were a few moments where you had me nervous. Before considering what you'd like to do next, please stop over to the discussion tab, where we've got an out-of-game issue to address.

Yanda uses the respite to heal herself and, if given enough time collect and replenish her gear from the mule and fabricate another mutagen. Oh, and make sure that mouther is well and truly dead.

"I really, really, need to invent a fire suppressor formulae."

Ylosani looks around at the devastation they have wrought with stoic approval. He recovers his bow then awaits the group's decision about the next direction for them to take.
When it is explained to him how he managed to stay in the fight after taking so much damage, he nods.
"Many thanks. Please use this going forward," he says, giving a slight bow and formally presenting Altovin with his own wand of cure light wounds.
Feel free to use that on whoever for the rest of the floor. Ylosani got more than his share out of yours already.
And that WAS a long combat but we strung what 3 or 4 encounters together, right?

"Do we think we can open that gate where the archer fire came from? I don't like having our exit blocked."

4 Charges from Ylosani's wand.
Altovin nods taking the wand which he uses to cure himself as the bond finishes healing Ylosani's wounds.
"Thank you! It was a gift from my Jaidz before I even knew of his name. Even when my cowardice is taking hold I can help others." he says with a smile.
"Mister Romulus, would you like me to heal your wounds as well? Before those other two that shot at me find their way to us?" he asks offering a heal if needed.
He then helps the others put out the fires but keep listening in case the other denizens are coming.
Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19
"I think I noticed the lever earlier if we want to open it and head that way...do we have rope to tie up those that survived?" he asks while making sure he can save any that are at risk of dying.

00:08 || Out of Initiative

With the battle finally over, and the fire finally out, the group takes some moments to regroup. It takes about 5 minutes for you to fully put out the fire, heal, and be ready to move on. During that time Yanda's Fox's Cunning expires.
Yanda fully heals herself, while she ponders future fire-fighting endeavors.
Yanda also looks around to see if there's any way to open the gate that shielded the two crossbowmen that ambushed Heccuba. Altovin points out that there is a lever in the original guardroom, and when it is investigated it does indeed appear that it probably opens the gate.
Ylosani's wounds are fully healed by his link with Altovin, and Altovin himself uses Ylosani's wand to make himself look as good as new. Ylosani, however, still doesn't quite seem as healthy as usual. (4 Con dmg remains)
Altovin also listens attentively to see if their foes are approaching, but he hears nothing.
Healed and conscious again, Heccuba and Book decide to return to Fort Inevitable. As they are climbing the stairs, they run into an old friend: Dasus, whose wounds have evidently healed sufficiently for him to return to the fray. Whatever look or gesture passes between the witch and the paladin as they meet on the stairs shall remain a mystery for the rest of us.
Are you all ready to move forward? Where would you like to go next?

![]() |

So not enough time has expired for the mutagent o wear off, right? If that is the case then she is ready to move on. Otherwise she will want to set up shop and produce a replacement.

When the fire is quenched, and the bodies dealt with, Ylosani offers up a length of rope to those who wish to tie up the remaining prisoners. Having little care or use for prisoners, himself, he moves to the gate and prepares as the rest of the group readies themselves.
We know there are baddies that way so I'm good with going through the gate.
