Rather than take offense, Yanda gets excited. "Unfortunately, its hard to carry around 100 pounds of water or sand. I'm thinking of inventing something foamy that will put out fires, but the society keeps me busy!"

to answer Ylosani's question about life link wrote:
Life Link (Su): As a standard action, you may create a bond between yourself and another creature. Each round at the start of your turn, if the bonded creature is wounded for 5 or more hit points below its maximum hit points, it heals 5 hit points and you take 5 hit points of damage. You may have one bond active per oracle level. This bond continues until the bonded creature dies, you die, the distance between you and the other creature exceeds medium range, or you end it as an immediate action (if you have multiple bonds active, you may end as many as you want as part of the same immediate action).

Ylosani moves over to the door and opens it; the door easily swings open into the room beyond. Through the open doorway he sees that this chamber is a small barracks with a pair of double bunks and a small privy in the north wall. The eastern portion of the room is partitioned into a pair of cells with doors made from iron bars. Inside each is a shoddy bunk and a rusty bucket.

However, he is unable to investigate any of this because something horrifying greets him on the other side of the door. This horrid mass of eyes, mouths, and formless flesh stares in all directions, its countless maws yammering ceaselessly. Map updated and picture of the creature posted to the right of the map.

On your turn, if you can see it:

Knowledge (Dungeoneering) DC 15:
This is a Gibbering Mouther, a medium aberration that is typically neutral. Disgusting, loathsome, and hungry—these are the only words that properly describe the gibbering mouther. A foul beast that lurks in underground caves, sewers, and nightmares, mouthers have no societal, ecological or religious significance other than their ability to drive those that listen to them mad. Some scholars believe that gibbering mouthers are a lesser variant of the much more dangerous shoggoth, while others theorize they are a punishment by some powerful being or deity inflicted on those who have offended it. For every 5 by which you beat the DC you may ask one question from this list.

One of the mouths purses itself before letting fly a gigantic dollop of spittle, aimed right at Ylosani's face!
spittle vs flat-footed touch: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (9) + 6 = 15
It hits him squarely, covering him with foul spittle.
Ylosani, please decide if you wish to use Resolve to roll twice and take the better result before looking at the spoiler.

Ylosani Fort save:

Ylosani Fort: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9 fail
If using Resolve to roll twice: Ylosani Fort: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17 fail
Blinded: 1d4 ⇒ 3
With spittle dripping from his beak, Ylosani struggles to see his new foe.

Then another of its many mouths lunges forward to bite our poor hero!
bite vs flat-footed AC: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
But fortunately his thick armor deflects the creature's maw.

Finally, the other mouths gibber, babble, and shriek, in an incessant cacophony that all of the pathfinders find highly obnoxious, or even maddening. It sounds something like this.
Ylosani, again, please decide if you are using Resolve before looking at the spoiler
Heccuba, please create an alias for Book with at least her basic stats (HP, saves, etc.) and add a token to represent her on the map.

Will Saves vs mind-affecting compulsion insanity effect:

Ylosani Will: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 2 = 15
Ylosani Will second roll if using Resolve: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
Heccuba Will: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20
Book Will: 1d20 ⇒ 5
Yanda Will: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
Romulus Will: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Altovin Will: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19
Courage Will: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21

All, please decide if you are using any rerolls or other special abilities before looking at the spoiler below.

Results of Will Save:

Heccuba, Altovin, and Courage all pass and may act normally (and are now immune to the creature's gibbering). Everyone else failed and is confused for 1 round.

Heccuba, while I was writing this post I see that you posted your action to begin looting the bodies of the fallen, but I assume that you would want to act differently once Ylosani opened the door and this new trouble began, so please take your turn from that point. Also, note that you (and Book, though I forgot to give her any damage last time) are standing in the middle of a raging fire and will take 1d6 fire damage every round from it, so you may wish to move.

On Heccuba's turn:

Book Confusion: 1d100 ⇒ 74
The witch's cat begins to claw at her own ears in an effort to get the horrific noise out of her hearing.
Book dmg to self: 1d8 ⇒ 6 Less whatever her Str modifier is; not yet added to Init card.

Fire dmg, Heccuba: 1d6 ⇒ 6
Fire dmg, Book: 1d6 ⇒ 3
Standing in the middle of the fire proves rather unpleasant for Heccuba and her cat.

Pink stabilization: 1d20 + 2 - 8 ⇒ (9) + 2 - 8 = 3

On Romulus' turn:

Romulus Confusion: 1d100 ⇒ 72
dmg: 1d8 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1 Not yet added to init card
Like the cat, Romulus beats himself in the head with his own bow, though rather ineffectually!

Heccuba and Romulus are up (but please review spoilers above before posting)

Fire spread?

Yanda and Romulus reel with confusion from the maddening noise. Romulus hits himself in the head with his bow in fruitless hopes of making it stop.

Heccuba's tiny dinosaur seems very confused and beats itself in the head. Book's damage total updated to 8 (3 from fire, 5 from self-harm (rolled 6 and -1 str modifier)). Heccuba, are you carrying Book? If not, she will - confusedly - remain standing in the fire.

Heccuba gets down from the blazing pile of crates that she was standing on and casts her soporific gaze upon the bizzare monster that threatens them.

Will DC 16: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
The creature falls into a slumber right in front of Ylosani. The sound of all those mouths snoring is hideous.

Orange stabilization: 1d20 + 2 - 6 ⇒ (7) + 2 - 6 = 3

Fire spread?: 1d20 ⇒ 20
The blaze finally catches something explosive in one of the crates and suddenly grows massively! Fire spreads 4 squares in each direction.

Maroon fire dmg: 1d6 ⇒ 3
Yellow fire dmg: 1d6 ⇒ 2

Book fire dmg: 1d6 ⇒ 4
Yanda fire dmg: 1d6 ⇒ 6
Pink fire dmg: 1d6 ⇒ 6
Orange fire dmg: 1d6 ⇒ 5

With a cry of alarm, Book falls unconscious from the flames and is now dying.

Start of Round 14

Yanda confusion: 1d100 ⇒ 44
Amidst all this chaos, Yanda stands in the middle of the growing fire and babbles incoherently, taking further fire damage.
fire dmg: 1d6 ⇒ 2

Even through the fire, Altovin's life link lends some badly needed healing to Ylosani. Altovin takes 5 dmg and Ylosani heals 5.

GM screen:

Courage Fort, DC +4: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (1) + 0 = 1

Courage and Altovin are up! Both are immune to the (now-ceased) gibbering and may act normally. Two saves from Ylosani are not yet resolved, pending the question of whether or not he uses Resolve for either of them.

Sorry for the confusion - no it's not your turn, but you needed to make two saves. Since I wasn't sure if you would want to use Resolve for either of them, I rolled the saves for you (as I generally do for everyone) but put them in spoilers, with the idea that you would decide if you wanted to use Resolve before looking at the spoilers. Clunky, but I'm not sure how else to handle abilities like Resolve in a PbP format. Let me know if you have any ideas.

Fire spread?

Resolving Ylosani's two saves from earlier, using the previously spoilered rolls, and assuming no use of Resolve to roll twice. Both saves failed, and would have failed even if Resolve was used.

The strange gibbering creature spits in Ylosani's face and he finds himself suddenly unable to see! Ylosani, you are blinded for 3 rounds.

A few moments later, the creature's horrible noises seem to drive Ylosani momentarily mad. Ylosani, you are also confused.

Altovin pauses, seemingly unsure of how to deal with this suddenly (even more) dire situation. Altovin and Courage on delay.

Yellow fire dmg: 1d6 ⇒ 3
Maroon fire dmg: 1d6 ⇒ 4
Purple fire dmg: 1d6 ⇒ 3

The three unconscious guards further down the hall are all consumed by the flames. For simplicity's sake, I'm removing the icons of any NPCs that are dead.

Ylosani confusion: 1d100 ⇒ 91 Attack nearest creature - this will be the slumbering Green (Heccuba is a hard corner away). Even though you are blinded, you know that it is next to you.
Confused by the horrible noises that are filling his ears, Ylosani blindly lashes out at the creature nearest to him!

Not yet. If it doesn't take any damage it will slumber for 3 rounds (your level) and then wake up. Unfortunately, Ylosani's confusion roll has him set to attack the nearest creature. Fortunately, Ylosani is blind, so he has a 50% miss chance against the creature. Aside from possibly taking damage from Ylosani, the creature could also be awakened if the fire spreads in that direction and it takes fire damage.

Since it is asleep, can I coup-de-grace it? Or am I unable to because I'm blind and confused? I'll put in both options mechanically.

For all that Ylosani reacts to being blinded by having gross spit launched in his eye, you might think he was an automaton. He flinches for a moment but does not cry out in either pain or fear.

His mind reels at the impossible sounds coming out of the thing but he falls back on instinct and training, lashing out at it.

I had thought about this beforehand and would have allowed it if you got the act normally option for confusion, but I can't see how the confusion rules allow it - coup de grace the nearest creature is not the same as attack the nearest creature. If someone wants to point me towards rules support for allowing it I'm possibly open to being persuaded but for now the answer is unfortunately no.

Fire spread?

In his confusion, Ylosani slashes out blindly at the sleeping creature at his feet, easily hitting it, though even in his confusion he notices that he does less damage than he might otherwise expect. (i.e. it has DR)

It's now Green's turn. At the beginning of his turn, the confusion effects expire for everyone (i.e. it's a 1 round duration).

With a horrible shriek, the monstrous creature awakens! Before it seemed hungry. Now it seems angry and hungry! It rises to its feet. Move action. This would normally provoke an AoO from Ylosani but I think in this case it doesn't due to him being blind. Let me know if you disagree and I'll dig around in the rules to doublecheck.

Once again, the creature resumes its horrific gibbering. Free action.

Courage, Altovin, and Heccuba are immune due to having made their saves last round; Book doesn't have to save due to being unconscious. Yanda, Ylosani, and Romulus, please decide whether you wish to use any abilities (e.g. Guidance, Resolve, etc.) before looking at the spoiler below.

Will saves vs mind-affecting compulsion insanity effect:

Yanda Will: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6 Fail: confused for 1 round
Ylosani Will: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22 Pass: now immune to gibbering
2nd roll if Resolved used, Ylosani Will: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
Romulus Will: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20 Possibly +1 if Guidance used; Pass: now immune to gibbering

One of the creature's mouths lets loose another disgusting globule of spittle, this time aimed at Yanda! Free action. Again, this would normally provoke an AoO from Ylosani but does not due to him being blind.
Ranged touch: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7
20% miss chance due to smoke, high is good for me: 1d100 ⇒ 50
All the creature manages to accomplish, however, is to spit into one of its other mouths!

Yet another mouth now reaches out to take a scrumptious bite of the blinded Ylosani. Standard action
Bite vs blinded AC: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (5) + 7 = 12
However, its teeth skitter harmlessly across his armor.

Heccuba fire dmg: 1d6 ⇒ 1
Book fire dmg: 1d6 ⇒ 4
The fire continues to burn the flesh of Heccuba and her poor unconscious dinosaur, who continues to slip towards death.
Heccuba, please doublecheck my math. You have 18 hp normally, so are still 3 away from 0, correct? And that should mean that Book has 9 normally, which puts him currently at -7 (or -8 if he fails his stabilization check) and his Con is - I think - 14. Correct?

Orange fire dmg: 1d6 ⇒ 2 The fire consumes the life of yet another of the pathfinders' foes.

Heccuba and Romulus are up! Stabilization check needed from Book.

Yanda is confused. What is her effect? Hopefully she runs away. And how much damage does she take?

Note: if she does not manage to escape this round, next round she will be using the boon Shrine of the Sacred Tempest

I'll roll for your fire dmg at the start of your turn and then for the confusion effect, which will hopefully allow you to act normally and run away.

Fire spread?

Romulus moves away from the fire and begins to inspire his comrades to keep their courage in the face of this great adversity. Romulus, I can't tell from your profile if you have Well-Versed or if your archetype (?) traded it away. If you do, you should have had a +4 on your saves vs the gibbering. Also, instead of Inspire Courage, do you want to use Countersong? Your Perform (Percussion) is higher than Yanda's Will save and might make the difference for getting her out of the fire.

Book fails to stabilize and slips a bit closer towards death.

Heccuba moves out of the fire and... Heccuba, I'm moving you to keep us moving along. You still have a standard action available if you wish to do something such as healing your compsagnathus or throw a hex or spell at the Green creature.

fire spread?: 1d20 ⇒ 3 ouch, bad luck!
The fire spreads only slightly, but unfortunately right into Ylosani's square.
Ylosani fire dmg: 1d6 ⇒ 5
Ylosani, you will also take 1d6 fire dmg each round that you begin or move through a fire square.

Beginning of Round 15

Yanda fire dmg: 1d6 ⇒ 2
Yanda confusion: 1d100 ⇒ 44
Although the fire is licking at her skin, Yanda stands still, babbling incoherently. Note that if Romulus uses Countersong as I suggested above, this will affect your next save.

Altovin's mystical link with Ylosani once again takes effect, providing some badly needed healing.
Ylosani fire dmg: 1d6 ⇒ 4

Altovin, Courage, and Ylosani are up! Heccuba still has a standard action available from her turn.
Ylosani, note that if you decide to move away from Green (an entirely reasonable plan!), due to being blind you need to make a DC 10 Acrobatics check to move faster than half speed or fall prone.

Yea! Thanks for saving Yanda's skinny butt!

The jarring rhythm breaks through to Yanda's consciousness and she books it out of the area to the north.

What is catching fire in the areas where no supplies are showing? Yanda has a standard action left and I'm wondering if she can move stuff out of the way in order to create a fire break.

Yeah, Countersong and Distraction (the same thing, but for visual effects) are very niche, but when they come up they are incredibly handy. Interestingly, you get them at Bard 1 and they scale with skill ranks, so I have a Magus 13/Bard 1 who has gotten great use out of that 1 level bard dip just by continuing to boost his skills.

GM post from earlier wrote:
Pathfinder doesn't really give me rules for adjudicating how easy or difficult it is to put out the fire - at least that I'm aware of. I'm using rules lifted from one of the APs for whether and how the fire spreads, but aside from that I'm really improvising here. Unless someone else has a suggestion, I'll entertain Survival checks to put out each square of fire: difficult (DC 20) without any firefighting supplies but I'll give bonuses if you find some source of water or blankets or other suitable means of fighting the fire. Aiding is allowed and I'll say that attempting such a check is a full round action. Seem reasonable?

As for what is catching fire: the corridors are filled with the various supplies of what seems to be an active settlement of some kind. In addition, there are wooden beams supporting the corridors, tiles of uncertain origin covering the floors, and the walls are daubed in (flammable) plaster and paint (some showing various murals). The corridors also have oil lamps for illumination and of course the reservoirs of oil are an additional source of fuel for the fire.

Fire spread?

Some retcon from above: a) Instead of beginning to Inspire Courage, Romulus uses his percussion skill to create a countersong to the horrible gibbering; b) this, in turn, enables Yanda to make a new save on her turn against the gibbering, which she passes; she still takes 2 fire dmg from being in the fire, but she is able to move out of the fire and still has a standard action remaining; c) since everyone is now immune to the gibbering, I'm removing that from the initiative card above and will simply skip the gibber attack from now on.

Altovin lays a hand upon the trembling compsagnathus and eases his suffering.

Ylosani is up! In addition, both Heccuba and Yanda still have their standard actions available.

Fire spread?

Ylosani blindly withdraws from the fearsome creature and the flames, managing to find his comrades back down the corridor and just out of the fire. For now.

Heccuba begins casting infernal healing on her wounded dinosaur. Heccuba, note that unfortunately infernal healing has a 1 round casting time (I have a PC who is only alive because both myself and the GM were not aware of this rule); since you've already used your move action getting out of the fire it will use your standard action both this round and next to cast. If you wish to retcon to not do this just let me know. Fyi, since Altovin has stabilized Book, he is no longer in danger of dying (unless he takes additional damage). Also, fyi, you had line of effect to Green before you moved out of the fire, so if you wish to hex (or cast, but that would require a concentration check due to the fire) vs Green, that is also legit.

Yanda still has a standard action available. If you wish to ready to do something to Green if it pursues (as it's about to), just go ahead and post it and I'll resolve it as if it happened before Green's attacks.

Green gibbers with rage as its long awaited meal suddenly moves away and it gives chase, right into the fire!

Ranged Touch, cover: 1d20 + 6 - 4 ⇒ (2) + 6 - 4 = 4
However, between the fire and the intervening mass of Ylosani, the creature's spit comes nowhere close to Altovin.

Heccuba and Romulus are up! Yanda still has standard action available. Heccuba, note that if you wish to continue with your casting of infernal healing you'll have to use your standard action from this round to complete the casting.

Fire spread?

Yanda gulps down an elixir, while Romulus readies to give covering fire to any of his allies who are attacked. Romulus, do you wish to continue your bardic performance? There's really no reason to continue with countersong since you all have immunity to the gibbering now, but it would take a standard action to change to something else. Meanwhile, Heccuba completes the casting of her spell on Book, which begins the healing process of the wounded dinosaur. Book heals 1 to 16 dmg.
