Yet Another ... Rise of the Runelords PBP

Starting in the sleepy coastal town of Sandpoint, danger lurks.

Sorry I missed that 5' step, Nich.

Ned lands the killing blow. With a shriek filled with hatred and dismay, Nualia dies. This was definitely not the same Nualia from your younger days. Something tormented and transformed her after you all left Sandpoint years ago.

For convenience's sake, here's the description for this room again:

Wide stone ledges of red marble line the curving walls of this room, which is well lit by four burning skulls that sit in each corner. Three chairs rest in the room, and both stone ledges are covered with old books, scrolls, teeth, bones, scrimshaw artwork, jars of deformed
creatures soaking in brine, taxidermied animals and limbs, and other strange objects. To the north, a large round fountain filled with frothy blue water fills the room with the gentle sound of bubbling.

Huzzah and whatnot! Congrats to all of us!!

If he's not dead, do we want to include Orik in the healing?

As soon as the first round of group prayer brings Lleidr up to full hp, he wants to roll the bodies, starting with Tsuto, both physically searching and using Detect Magic.

Loot:

Lyrie - you've already taken her stuff

Nualia - magic breastplate, magical bastard sword, mwk composite longbow & 20 arrows, gold holy symbol, 7 pp, 5 gp, and a strange medallion (more on that below), magical potion

Tsuto - magical potion, composite shortbow & 18 arrows, magical ring, mwk thieves' tools, mwk flute, silver earrings, 6 pouches of gold dust, 8 pouches of silver dust, 10 pp

Also, Nualia left several journals and notes scattered about on the shelves here.

The medallion is a silver disc inscribed with an unfamiliar rune of obvious ancient origin. The design on its face is like this . The medallion, which hangs off a leather cord, does project an aura of faint necromancy.

I vote to include Orik in the healing. We should probably give him the rest of his stuff back as well!

I think we all need rest but let us first drag these bodies upstairs and toss them all with the Goblin corpses before we rest and explore further... but first we can divest them of their belongings.

"Do you think we should take their bodies back with evidence of their crimes and plans? We need proof of death, but no matter what she became, I can't bring myself to mutilate Nuyalia's body any more." Blissfully unaware of the irony, Lleidr will continue looting the corpses before turning his Detect Magic to the room in general.

Did we acutually kill them out right because if we didn't i would like to venerate my god Ragathiel by cutting of tusto's and the witch's heads of at dawn. Which by lore is a thing paladin's of Ragathiel do and the reason they are awesome.

I think we should bring her body away with us so it can be properly buried. Even if she has been twisted she was still our friend.

Technically, they're all dying: negative hp, unconscious, helpless, etc.

Search results: Nich is able to ID the objects scattered on the shelves as miscellaneous holy texts, scrolls, and relics sacred to the worship of Lamashtu. Mixed in with all this stuff are notes & journals written in Nualia's own hand (more on this below).

Selia knows, to her horror, that the scars and wounds across Nualia's belly are signs of Lamashtu's Mark. The markings not only show devotion to the Mother of Monsters, but make the bearer capable of birthing monsters from her own belly.

Detect Magic: Lleidr finds that the burning skulls were dweomered with continual flame spells. The bubbling font has a very faint aura of divination. From study of its arcane properties, the water could somehow grant vision through eyes on the outside of this island (if you'll recall, Sandpoint's resident sage/crackpot, Brodert Quint, has suggested that Thistletop is actually the topmost remnant of a colossus from the ancient world).

I'm assuming you're going to read Nualia's writings as part of your search. I'll post the information you get from these in my next post.

This is a re-telling & summary of the events Nualia has related in her writing. Some of this, especially in the beginning, you’re already familiar with. Even so, the beginning is always a good place to start.

Nualia was an aasimar foundling raised by Sandpoint’s previous religious leader, a man named Ezakien Tobyn, and her childhood was lonely and sad. Her unearthly beauty made the other children either jealous or shy, and many of them took to playing cruel jokes on her. Most adults in town weren’t much better—many of the superstitious Varisians viewed Nualia as blessed by Desna, a sort of “reverse deformity.” Rumors that her touch or proximity could cure warts and rashes, that locks of her hair brewed into tea could increase fertility, and that her voice could drive out evil spirits led to a succession of awkward and humiliating requests over the years. She had very few friends, mainly just you. Poor Nualia felt more like a freak than a young girl. By the time she came of age, you all had grown up and moved away from Sandpoint for greener pastures. Now feeling totally abandoned and alone, when Delek Viskanta, a local Varisian youth, began to court her, she practically fell into his arms in gratitude.

Knowing her father wouldn’t approve of a relationship with a Varisian (he wanted her to remain pure so she could join a prestigious convent), they kept the affair secret. The couple met many times in hidden places, a favorite being an abandoned smuggler’s tunnel under town that Delek had discovered as a child. Before long, Nualia realized she was pregnant. When she told Delek, he revealed his true colors and, after calling her a slut and a harlot, fled Sandpoint rather than face her father’s wrath. Nualia’s shock quickly turned to rage, yet she had nowhere to vent her anger. She bottled it up, and when her father discovered her delicate condition, his reaction to her indiscretions only furthered her shame and anger.

He forbade her to leave the church, lectured her nightly, and made her pray to Desna for forgiveness. In so doing, he unknowingly nurtured her growing hate. When the minor runewell in the Catacombs of Wrath below Sandpoint flared to life, Nualia’s own anger was a magnet to its magic. The wrathful energies suffused her mind and she flew into a frenzy. Seven months pregnant, she miscarried her child later that night, a child whose monstrously deformed shape she only glimpsed before blanching midwives stole it away to burn it in secret. As the child had been conceived in the smuggler’s tunnels below town, in close proximity to a hidden shrine to Lamashtu (the goddess of monstrous births), the child itself was deformed and horrific. The double shock of losing a child and the realization she had been carrying a fiend in her belly for 7 months was too much. Nualia fell into a coma.

As Nualia slept, she dreamed unhealthy dreams. Fueled by the wrath from below and the taint of Lamashtu, Nualia became further obsessed with the cruel demon goddess and the conviction that her wretched life was inflicted on her by those around her. She came to see her angelic heritage as a curse, and the demon-sent nightmares showed her how to expunge this taint from her body and soul, replacing it with chaos and cruelty.

When she finally woke, Nualia was someone new, someone who didn’t flinch at what Lamashtu asked of her. She jammed her father’s door shut as he slept, lit the church on fire, and fled Sandpoint. The locals assumed Nualia had burned in the fire, a tragedy made all the worse by the death of Father Tobyn as well. Yet Nualia lived. She fled to Magnimar, where she enlisted the aid of a group of Norgorber-worshiping killers known as the Skinsaw Cult. With their aid, she tracked down Delek and murdered him.

Yet his death did not fill her need for revenge—it only quickened her need for more of the same, for Sandpoint and its hated citizens still lived. Seeing a kindred spirit in the tortured woman, the mysterious leader of the Skinsaw Cult gave Nualia a medallion bearing a carving of a seven-pointed star called a “Sihedron medallion.” Nualia learned that she had a larger role to play, and that her dreams were a map to her destiny. Taking the advice to heart, Nualia returned to Sandpoint and found herself drawn to the brick wall in the smuggler’s tunnels where she and Delek had conceived her deformed child. Nualia bashed down the wall, and in so doing, discovered the Catacombs of Wrath and the quasit Erylium, also a follower of Lamashtu. For many months, Nualia studied under Erylium’s tutelage. During this time, Nualia received another vision from Lamashtu—a vision of a monstrous goblin wolf imprisoned in an underground room. In Nualia’s dreams, she learned that this creature, a barghest named Malfeshnekor, was also one of Lamashtu’s chosen. If she could find him and free him, he would not only help her achieve her vengeance against the town of Sandpoint, but he would be the key in cleansing her body of what she had come to see as her “celestial taint.” Nualia wanted to be one of Lamashtu’s children now. She wanted to become a monster herself.

At this point, Nualia drew the attentions of Tsuto, a half-elf of the aristocratic Longjiku clan, who was also rejected by his own father. Establishing herself at Thistletop, she was able to commandeer leadership of the Thistletop goblin clan (despite protestations from their druidic priest, Gogmurt), and from there, force the other neighboring tribes to quit their petty bickering. United, the goblins were able to launch a raid on Sandpoint while Tsuto Orik slipped into the cemetary and stole Tobyn’s body. His remains created a splendid burnt offering to Lamashtu, and Nualia could feel her monstrous energies grow as a result. Soon she would be able to gather an entire army of goblins and burn every inch of Sandpoint to the ground. Not only would the entire town become a second burnt offering, the act would also fuel the runewell in the catacombs below Sandpoint.

Manifesting new sinspawn from the runewell is very simple. The death of a wrathful soul within about a mile fuels the runewell. A few drops of blood into the runewell (the very thing that Erylium did when you entered the cathedral below Sandpoint) will cause a sinspawn to emerge. But, and this cannot be stressed highly enough, if too many sinspawn are summoned, then the runewell will be deactivated, it’s power spent. Whatever rituals which once existed to recharge the well are long lost.

There was a minor complication with Nualia’s plans for Sandpoint: you. The fact that you would re-unite was completely unforeseen, although not entirely unwelcome. Nualia was eager for revenge, for she felt slighted by your abandonment long ago. Most disturbing was when you tracked Tsuto’s trail outside town. She immediately sent Orik into town, with your descriptions, on a mission to find you and relay “news” of the recovery of her father’s remains. Of course, there was no recovery, but simpleton Orik knew no better.
Foolish Tsuto immediately returned to Sandpoint with a team of goblins, kidnapped his sister, and murdered his father. Leaving his journal behind was a crucial mistake on his part, and helped lead you to Thistletop.

The last entries in Nualia’s journal are about her efforts to explore this bottom level of Thistletop, and to find this being she refers to as Malfeshnekor. These passages are dangerous, have been blocked with rubble, and difficult to navigate. Their progress was slow, but each day, she could feel herself drawing closer to setting Malfeshnekor free. If not her, then eventually someone will, and Sandpoint will die.

Holy crap, was that the plot summary to Twilight or whatever silly thing teen girls are into now? No wonder Lleidr didn't remember/give a crap about this chick. Poor thing with her half-angel heritage and everyone thinking touching or being around her was a blessing. Must've really sucked. Thank the gods everyone was cool to Lleidr when he was a 2 foot tall teenager. Whiny monster chick.

Rise of the Runelords predates Twilight by years, so I think Twilight stole from Nualia.

Actually, I have no idea what Twilight is about, other than it's some lovey-dovey thing with vampires.

BTW, thanks to a Spellcraft check made on your behalf, the medallion you found on Nualia with the rune has the ability to grant 'Gentle Repose' on its bearer.

Let us rest my friends - our brother of Ragathiel can have his way later

Assuming the Half Orc lives we can put him to work after the rest (someone needs to stay on watch - don't trust him 100% as yet) fixing the bridge and I'm not sure this place is fully explored as yet.

Are we resting here and now? Lleidr wouldn't mind taking the magic items and the bodies upstairs. Some fresh air might help his Spellcraft rolls :) Unless you already made rolls, Zilt? Was the medallion the only thing he could successfully ID?

I too can try but I only have a +4 to spellcraft. I will never be the party skill monkey

I never rolled Spellcraft on the rest of the items detecting as magical, other than the permanent fixtures in the room: the burning skulls and fountain.

It seems like you're at a natural break, and you could easily take 20 for your check on the remaining objects, so let's assume that:

Nualia: +1 bastard sword, +1 breastplate

Lyrie: potion of CLW, scrolls (comprehend languages, minor image, see invisibility, sleep, whispering wind), wand of magic missile (37 charges), spellbook (detect secret doors, floating disc, identify, locate object, minor image, obscuring mist, spider climb, mirror image, shatter, burning hands, grease, mage armor, ray of emfeeblement, acid splash, detect magic, ray of frost, predist.), everburning torch

Gogmurt (Thistletop chieftan): wand of produce flame (34 charges), wand of tree shape (4 charges), +1 leather armor (small sized), cloak of resistance + 1

Bruthazmus (goblin champion): 4 +1 elf bane arrows, Potion of CMW

Tsuto: Potion of CLW, ring of protection +1

Wow, lots to process. Between the haul from upstairs and this new pile, we got a lot to move back to town. And, of course, the bodies.

Zilt, this might be a dumb question but is this the end of the module? The bad guys are dead and the threat to town is eliminated. Except for a room or two and that corridor in the more cave-like section, we seem to have explored everything. I guess the corridor leads down to where that barghest is? I'm not sure what that is; is it something we are supposed to/want to take on?

If this ain't the end, are we headed back to Sandpoint before we go down to the next level? We got a lot of booty to figure out. The horse is still up top, so I suppose we could throw the bodies on it, but I still don't know how we're going to get the horse through the briar tunnels.

If instead we're going to magically Tupperware the bodies and head down to the next level, what do we want to do with this new treasure? There are obviously some mundane and magical items Lleidr's interested in :)

Zilt, you listed a potion on Nualia above, but didn't include one on the list of ID'd items. Did a potion get missed?

Lleidr would like to Appraise Nualia's gold holy symbol:
Appraise: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11

I think there are corridors we haven't explored yet and our paladin needs to do an execution. Oh and we needs rest up.

I also think we should do a quick run through the place taking 10 on perception every were just so we don't miss things.

I agree the people of sand point should know of the truth and we need to rest. Orik take your things and leave as per our agreement. Do not return to sandpoint and though rude I hope never to see you again.

I must have made a mistake listing a potion with Nualia. She doesn't have one. Her gold holy symbol is probably worth 100 gp.

Apparently, Malfeshnekor only waits on someone to free him. Are you supposed to eliminate him? That's a good question!

As far as what's left to discover here .. that's difficult to say. You're not sure how deep you have traveled down into Thistletop, although the stairs leading down were steep both times. Surely you're nearly level with the ocean by now? Anybody got a dwarf handy?

So you're going to execute Tsuto?

Orik: Sandpoint? Why would I want to back there? I've gotten mixed up in craziness ever since I set foot in that town. If you've any sense, you won't go back there either. Nah, I think greener pastures await me down south. Figure I'll try to scare up some business down in Magnimar, the big city.

Ranger (guide) 8| AC 18(22) | HP 86/86

"Thanks for the help Orik. As far as I'm concerned, we're square. Good luck in Magnimar,"

On getting the horse out: remember that Ned found tracks indicating something had been dragged through the thistle tunnels on the mainland.

As far as resting, are you going back to town for a few days with your treasure and prisoners? With Nualia's defeat, the immediate threat to Sandpoint has ended.

8th lvl Halfling (Rogue 6/Sorcerer 2); 22, 2'10", 32#; Str 8, Dex 20, Con 13, Int 8, Wis 9, Cha 16; AC: 21 (touch 17, ff n/a); hp 64; Initiative +5

Yeah, I was kinda trying to figure out another way besides knocking it out and dragging it out.

Regarding Tsuto, I'd have preferred he and Nualia died from their wounds, but if a beheading is Jub's god's way, Lleidr won't raise any objections.

Since we have a secret room to hide treasure in and magic to preserve the bodies for transport, for once Lleidr would rather rest here and continue exploring.

Speaking of treasure, I took the liberty of creating an updating loot list. I assume some of y'all want to claim some of it now?

Also, Zilt, while we're doing take 20s and getting things ID'd, can I get the potions from the goblins up top identified, and the command word for the Wand of Shocking Grasp?

In case you guys are worried about looking greedy...

Lleidr's primarily interested in:

a split of the coinage after the masterwork and treasure items are sold
Gut-tugger, +1 shortsword
Ripnugget's dented crown

Wand of Shocking Grasp

The bastard sword should go to the Paladin.

The breastplate to the Barbarian.

The rest of it? I have no interest in any of it (and can't use much of it) though I am hoping this gives me a larger portion of gold. I want to buy a set of full plate (MW) - likely in Magnimar.

We can head back now to enjoy the heros aclaim (and GM wrap up).

I believe these were all cure potions:

Potion of CMW (4)
Potion of CLW (1)

The silver dust is worth 5 gp each pouch
The gold dust = 50 gp each pouch
Tsuto's silver earrings = 25 gp for the pair
the crown is worth 20 gp

Okay all - here's my idea. Ned, Hakak, Jubyral, Liedr, you all take a potion of Cure Moderate Wounds with myself taking the Cure Light Wounds one

7432 cp is 74 gold 3 silver and 2 copper
2490 sp is 249 gold
94 gp is well... 94 gold and
24 pp is 240 gold

That adds to 657 gold, 3 silver and 2 copper

8 pouches of silver dust at 5 gold each is 40 gold
6 pouches of gold dust, at 50 gold each is 300 gold
The silver earrings are 25 gold.

The total is 1022 gold, 3 silver and 2 copper

Split 5 ways is 204 gold each after sales, the remaining 2 gold, 3 silver and 2 copper? Lets spend that on a lot of drinks - its too fiddly to split up.

The crown can go to Lleidr who seems to be quite attached to it.

Any objections? We can have this coinage broken into gold back at Sandpoint

* silver symbol of Lamashtu, 30 gp (defaced by myself but the silver is still good)
* medium studded leather armor, saved by Nich, resale value 12.5 gp
* heavy flail, saved by Nich, resale value 7.5 gp
* gold holy symbol (Nualia's, so I assume to Lamashtu), defaced by myself but the gold in it is still good - 100 gp

All totalled? 1480 gold and 5 silver.

Thats 296 gold each and the 5 silver goes to the beer fund.

Any Objections?

Okay - this is the fun part... and I'll need you to chime in.

* masterwork composite longbow, STR rating unknown, default book value 400 gp, carried by Ned I think?

Lets get this identified and let Ned hold it.

* 4 +1 elfbane arrows - I think these also go to Ned

* Gut-tugger, +1 short sword, claimed by Lleidr. I am fine with this.

* Wand of Shocking Grasp, charges, caster level, and command word not yet determined, claimed by Lleidr - he's the only one who can use this.

* masterwork composite longbow, STR rating unknown, default book value 400 gp - I think this should go to Hakak.

* Sihedron medallion, has the ability to grant 'Gentle Repose' on its bearer. I don't see the use in this but it is an ancient artifact so lets retain it.

* composite short bow, STR rating unknown, default book value 75 gp. I don't know - can Lleidr use it? Otherwise maybe our Paladin?

* masterwork thieves' tools. Lleidr is the only one who can make this work for him.

* masterwork flute - If Lleidr wants to buy it he can throw 50 gold into the central fund... he's done well so far with the crown.

* +1 bastard sword - this should go to our servant of Ragathiel.

* +1 breastplate - I think Hakak could use some more protection.

* Scrolls of Comprehend Languages; Minor Image; See Invisibility; Sleep; and Whispering Wind... Not sure what to do with these but Lleidr can use these

* Wand of Magic Missiles, 37 charges, command word and caster level unknown. Lleidr can use this.

* Wand of Produce Flame, 34 charges, command word and caster level unknown. Not sure what to do with this? Sell it?

* Wand of Tree Shape, 4 charges, command word and caster level unknown. Not sure what to do with this? Sell it?

* small +1 leather armor. Lleidr can use it.

* potion of Cure Light Wounds - I'll hold this. Bringing me up to two but I can pass these around later.

It is these final 2 items:
* Cloak of Resistance +1
* Ring of Protection +1

That really need to be disposed of. Who wants them? Any objections to my suggestions?

Ned can use the tree shape wand it might come in handy for spying or something. We should sell the scrolls of Sleep and Whispering Wind.
I would like the bastard sword though both of them can do without the cloak and ring. I am going to have to ask for scrolls in these numbers from the party loot remove fear 2 and paralysis 1 for 200gp otherwise she won't be able to buy anything ever.

I didn't know you were skilled in the bastard sword Selia... something to consider. Maybe the magical short sword instead in lieu of that? Afterall Lleidr, you got the magical returning dagger and quite a bit more besides?

Also Selia take a potion of cure light wounds. We both get one that way.

I find that I need to redo the gold - we are six and not five. That is my error. In fact we make 250 gold each and 3 silver and 3 copper - beer money aside that is.

The wand of tree shape can go to Ned then... but Selia, you and I have not done so well, as you have noted.

What do the others say in that Selia gets the scrolls she mentioned and that I get the wand of produce flame?

Ned could use the Breastplate as well but if Harak wants it, that's fine. As far as I know the MW comp bow is non-magical and has no st bonus. Treasure division sounds good to me!

Thanks! This brings the total count to 4 CMW and 3 CLW.

Nich, just to double check, the reworking of the math up there is only for the items we're selling? Adding up the coins and the projected resale values, I'm getting roughly 416 gp per person (rounded).

Lleidr's not particularly attached to either of the magic weapons he's carrying, but he'd rather give up the short sword than the returning dagger. If Selia wants the short sword +1, I think she'd look bad ass with the goblin blade at her side :) Or if y'all need more cash, sell it.

Same with the wands. He's more interested in keeping the magic missiles than the shocking grasp. If more coinage is needed, he's more than happy to chuck the shocking grasp in for selling.

He can't use the composite short bow without suffering a STR penalty.

He's more than happy to give 50 gp for the flute and 20 gp for the crown back to the group.

All of the scrolls can go in the sell pile. Lleidr was only interested in them 'cause he's the only one who can use arcane items.

Weapons etc sell at half value.

Cool. So I'm showing (with rounded numbers) 1022 gp in coins/dust/earrings and 1479 gp in items to sell. That totals 2501, split 6 ways to about 416 gp each.

Then Lleidr's giving back 70 gp for the crown and flute, dropping his share to 346 and bumping everyone else up to 430.

Any scrolls, wands, or weapons that end up in the sell pile, y'all can split. The 346 gp is more than Lleidr needs to take care of his family and help out with the repairs to the damage done to Sandpoint during the goblin raid.

Don't forget the +1 Longsword, Silver Dagger, and MWK Handaxe I took from the deformed goblin champion near the beginning of the campaign. I just grabbed them so they wouldn't get left behind, but I'll probably have to sell them anyways to save my encumbrance from going into the heavy range. So if anyone wants them I'm willing to throw them in the pot.

So whenever you're ready to proceed, I think we can assume you'd be fully healed after a day or two's rest, given Jub, Nich & Selia's healing abilities.

The only visible passage which leads further into the current lower level of Thistletop is rooom #E5 on the map. I'll repeat the description for you:

The southern wing of this L-shaped hallway ends at a pair of stone doors carved with the depictions of two skeletons reaching out to clutch a skull between them, while to the east the hallway narrows down to frame a circular carving of what seems to be an immense stack of tens of thousands of gold coins that rises from floor to ceiling. The edges of these coins are carved with tiny, spiky runes.

Well said!

Consider me to channel 1 more time before rest and 3 times after... healing 2d6 ⇒ (4, 6) = 10 + 2d6 ⇒ (3, 6) = 9 + 2d6 ⇒ (5, 3) = 8 + 2d6 ⇒ (3, 3) = 6 = 33 hps of healing

so, you're all resting a total of 1 day, right?

any idea where you're going next on the map?

My partner just pointed out that if I worked half as hard at my real world finances as I have the last few days on the loot split, I might actually know where my paychecks went. His admittedly correct smart-assedness would make a lesser geek question his priorities...

Although it practically has a neon sign flashing TRAP with arrows pointing at it, Lleidr will be drawn to the carving of coins down the east wing of the hall. He'll cast Detect Magic and use it to enhance his efforts to Find Traps.

Perception (Find Traps): 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (9) + 9 = 18

You notice a couple of things

- There's a hollow space behind the pillar

- There are 2 small, coin-sized slots on either side of the pillars

There's no sign of any traps. However the column does bear an arcane aura, illusionist in nature. The aura is strong.
