Roy breathes heavily for a few more moments after sidestepping the falling ogre, then puts a final bullet in its head for good measure. He quickly reloads his revolver and rifle and nods to Ashlyn. "Good shooting, Deppie. Let's get rid of this fane and then figure out what the hell's going on so we can get out of each other's hair as soon as we can."
Female Human Marksman
Alisha says, "You alright Roy? You took quite a wallop from that Ogre. Indeed let us continue on and get to that Fane. We'll need to bring an end to it and quickly."
"Glad I could help. I have my men going around scouting out this ruin."
Her radio buzzes and you hear a man. "Looks like two more ogres are patrolling the area outside. They heard the gunfire and are heading that way, but are moving slow, they will be there in a few minutes. We also spotted what looked like a giant old woman inside the tower."
Roy rubs his shoulder, but nods. "Yeah, I'm fine. Let's get this over with." He quickly begins moving forward, rifle again in hand, his mind working to see if he knows anything about a giant old woman...
Knowledge (arcane lore): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20
You consider it and thinking back to the forest fane you recall it was guarded by a sea hag and the Annis Hag is know to resemble a giant old woman. Hags are also knows to often come in groups of three...
And here's where I look through Roy's equipment and realize I didn't buy him sunglasses, even though I meant to. Not a big deal.
...Hag. Roy scowls under his bandana and double checks that the rifle is loaded. "This is gonna be ugly."
Female Human Marksman
Alisha probably also knows the same information as Roy (22 with a take 10 on a knowledge check).
"Another hag. This is going to be difficult. We had more than enough trouble with the first hag we faced. If only I had some magic to counter their magical tricks. We're going into this like sheep with guns. It appears all the foes we face tend to have the edge in terms of supernatural power."

Dom awoke uneasily. He looked around and saw Xannder. Hovering over him looking at his wound.
"What - what happened?" he asked, sounding weak.
When Xannder finally explains, Dom nods and says, "Sit me up against that tree."
Once that's done, he tells Xannder, "Alright, now go help them."
When Xannder protests he puts his Beretta against his own head.
"Go now. Before I pull this trigger, splatter my brains and take away your only reason for staying. "

"we could use a distraction boys, keep those ogres busy." says ashlyn
Shortly after some flares are fired from somewhere to the south of the tower.
"That should get those ogres going that way."
"Lets see whats in the tower."
You head over to the tower and go in trough the door. On the bottom floor is a large runestone surrounded by glowing runes like the one you found in the forest.
Roy immediately begins looking around. "Alisha, get to work on that stone if you think you know what to do. I'll keep lookout."
Listen: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
Spot: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25
You see stairs going up the stone tower and you can hear heavy footsteps above.
Roy quickly kneels at the base of the stairs and prepares to fire as soon as the creature comes into view. He also readies to shut his eyes as soon as he sees movement--even a foot or arm--and then fire, risking a miss to save himself the sight of the horrendous creature.
Attack: 1d20 + 6 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 6 + 1 = 10

Shot's gonna go way wide.
Female Human Marksman
Alisha gets to working on that stone using her vast arcane knowledge skill to work with it.
Female Human Marksman
Arcane Lore 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (17) + 13 = 30
Alisha with her vast knowledge of arcane runes is able to decipher the magical properties of this fane and perhaps find a way to disable it safely.
Examining the runes you see a pattern and recall a passage you read in the tome given to you by the witch. The stone is attuned to a guardian most likely the hag if the guardian is slay and her blood smear on the stone it's power will become dormant. There is also a ritual to make it dormant but it requires 8 hours to complete. Destroying the stone would also make it useless but it is highly resistant to damage.
Female Human Marksman
Alisha looks to the others and says, "We got a few options here. There is a ritual that can be done to de-power this rune but it will take 8 hours, far more time than we have. The safest way to deal with it would be to kill the Hag that is bound to the runestone and smear it with her blood. We also could try and destroy the stone but we'll need something pretty powerful to damage it and destroying the stone means that we won't be able to use it ourselves."
"Safe? That's a laugh. Let's just do it..." he mutters.
Apologies for the delay didn't realized you were waiting for me. If you ever your waiting for me make a post in the discussion topic to draw my attention. I have several games going on and when I take the time to check I most often focus on the games that have new posts.
The hag finally comes down the stairs to investigate and Roy takes a shot but while hiding his eyes the shot goes wide.
The hag is surprised and Ashlyn takes a shot as well catching the hag in the shoulder.

Should have mentioned it before but Annis hags have DR 5/bludgeoning so Roy is actually making a good call going with the club. They have no spell like abilities other than to disguise their appearance and to create thick fog but can Rend a foe if they hit with both claws.

He readies to attack if she does, still focused on defense. Readied action to attack with Combat Expertise.

"You said you need to destroy this stone right? I have some c4 I was going to use to blast my way into the castle. We could use it on this stone istead or we could go after her."
Realizing the hag isn't likely to come back down, Roy snaps his baton shut and lifts his rifle. "Let's just kill this thing, save the explosives for when we need 'em."
Female Human Marksman
Alisha says, "The explosives seem somewhat of an overkill in this situation. It would be better to use them on the Vampire's Castle in case we need to blow open a sealed door. Lets kill that Hag!"
You go up the stairs and as you arrive the hag picks up a clay jar from a shelf and trows it at you. It hits the wall and shatters releasing a thick purple smoke.

I was away for the weekend, and haven't had an opportunity to complete my character. I hope I'll have him done by tomorrow for your approval.
ok.
Also starting a wheel of time game is anyone wants in.

This is Aconyte, I found a character generator online so I put the stats into the alias. Not sure if they are accurate as I have not had time to read the PDF yet.
Wealth: 2d4 + 1 ⇒ (3, 1) + 1 = 5
looks good. Any more characters coming soon?
I am working on it, my initial concept would take him to close to Xannder, so I work on another angle for him.
Wealth: 2d4 + 1 ⇒ (1, 3) + 1 = 5
We have another Smart Hero? Isn't that too many? My character is the brains of the group already.
Don't worry about it too much. Classes don't matter as much in modern as depending how you build them most classes can fill multiple roles.
I'm also going to be a multi-class by the time it's done.
You're the academic side of it, with occult lore and such, I'm just a detective style character. Feeling wise, we're two completely different animals so to speak.
I'll be, whatever dedicated is lol.
I'm wondering if Battle Mind is an option.
Mad Dog will be posting this evening, got to run right now.
Ok I'm waiting for a character from big Om and anyone else?
If there's a spot I'd love to join!
If there's no overlap I'd play a Dedicated Hero, (ex-)doctor who got traumatized when a hit-and-run victim woke up in the middle of surgery and disemboweled the other doctor and a nurse before running off. After a mental breakdown from the trauma he spent some time in a mental institution. Here he met a hunter (who was institutionalized because of an insanity plea after being caught by the law) that helped make sense of the encounter, which helped the healing process enormously. After being discharged recently and realizing his medical career might be rather.... jeopardized, my character used the still-institutionalized hunter's contacts to become one himself.
Wealth: +1 (4 ranks in Profession), +4 (Occupation: Doctor)
wealth: 2d4 + 5 ⇒ (2, 2) + 5 = 9
Busy on the sheet now, depending on the fact if Acolyte would be available as an advanced class I'd like to redistribute some skill points and my skill emphasis though, otherwise I might go into Field Medic.
Gear over wealth bonus 9:
9 - 1 (leather jacket) = 8
8 - 1 (medical kit) = 7
7 - 1 (laser sight) = 6
Biggest item: if allowed a 2x mastercrafted DOG-1. 1st mc is inherent, 2d is bought.
DOG-1 (Weapons Locker) = purchase DC 17 (includes inherent mastercraft)
License = 17 + 1 = 18
Second mastercraft = 18 + 3 = 21
Total purchase DC = 21.
Which is 15 over my wealth of 6 so a wealth decrease of 1d6+1
Final wealth = 6 - MC DOG-1: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
If not allowed or the roll is below 0, I need to purchase a different gun
Hm, wealth below 0, not allowed.
Then I'm gonna go for a Benelli Model B-76.
Benelli Model B-76 (Weapon Locker) = purchase DC 15 (includes inherent mastercraft)
License = 15 + 1 = 16
Which is 10 above my wealth of 6 so the decrease is 2
Leaving me with a wealth of 4.
I am not getting along with this character, I just can't get him of the ground. So I am going withdraw and let you go on playing.
ok then...The quite big but not big bad it seems we have an opening. how is your character coming along?
Still have openings is anyone wants in.
Actually, I think I'm interested. I've been wanting to use d20 Modern to run a Supernatural-style of game for a while now. Any qualms about a charismatic hunter?
sounds good to me. You can be one of the hunters that arrived ahead of the group and has been in town for a few days.

Awesome. I need some time to do my shopping and setup a profile, but everything else is good to go.
In fact, let me go ahead and roll my wealth. The +2 is from the Investigative Occupation. Come on big money!
Wealth: 2d4 + 2 ⇒ (4, 3) + 2 = 9
Woo-hoo! Oh, that's a sigh of relief. That takes care of all the little stuff I want with no problem. I'll roll the rest of the equipment in a bit.
Here's my character's background:
Dom was a private dick, like his father before him. He stumbled into the truth when he and his Dad were hired by a rich old lady who thought her husband was sleeping with another woman. But the truth was he had been involved with a doomsday cult. Damn things were all the rage before 2012. They got caught snooping around, and his father was later sacrificed before his very eyes. Dom doesn’t ever really talk about what happened after. Although one night Harvey got him drunk enough to mutter a “…made them regret it.” Now Dom is on the move, exploring the weirder side of the world one decapitated head at a time.
Okay, with a WB +9, I can purchase the following with no contest:
Cell Phone, DC 9
Range Pack, Oversized, DC 9
Knife, DC 7
Concealed Carry Holster, DC 5
9mm (50 bullets), DC 5
Compass, DC 5
Box Magazine (x2), DC 4
Flashlight, Standard, DC 4
Buying a handgun license is DC 10, that drops me to WB +8.
Next let's start off with a simple handgun, the Beretta 92F (DC 16). I could get something more powerful, but I'd rather start off small. Buying that will drop my wealth by 2, giving me WB +6.
Now, Silver Bullets 9mm bullets would cost DC 11. That will drop me to WB +5.
That puts me out of range for a car right now, but I can wait a bit.
Oh, and I have the Ultramodern Firearms d20 book. So let me know if anyone wants the stats for an FN P90.
This is wicked_raygun checking in. Still got some stuff to iron out with my profile. But I'm good to go otherwise. Feel free to insert me wherever, oh merciful GM.
Okay, stick a fork in me. I'm done. My character is ready to be inserted wherever appropriate. And I'm pretty good in my feet, so don't worry about that.
I'll send you a private message for your background info and get you involved in a bit.
Could use some fresh blood if anyone is interested in joining a supernatural-esque modern game.
This sounds interesting, what's the current party look like?
Smart hero 3/Mage 1
Charismatic 2/ Strong 2
Fast 4
Charismatic 4
Interested. Do you want to revise your character creation rules and provide a plot hook to connect to the existing party?
cheers
The current situation has more of less turned into a race against time as a powerful vampire has kidnapped an ally of the group and is going to turn her into a vampire, they are going to try and storm the vampires castle to get her back before that happens.
Your plot hook is more or less you were contact by harry and told about the situation down there.
A rift in the shadow opened up and dropped a castle next to the town of crested butte and monster have been pouring out of there overrunning the area. You were told nearly a dozen hunters went that way already and you decided to check it out.
As an alternative you can play the role of a hunter who came here before the players arrived and you somehow survived this long.
Actually, Xannder is Dedicated 4. We trended more towards investigation with our characters. But there's been not an insignificant amount of combat. And we -- and by that I mean "I" -- have been getting our butts handed to us.
It's been a good game, just deadlier than we first anticipated.
And I apologize for that I had originally intended for it to be much slowly pace with more investigation and then I wrote myself into a corner with Renna being taken and giving you a 3 day limit...After that everything was rushed. Looking back I should have had the dominated renna travel with the group for a while before having the vampire come for her.
Nah, it's been a lot of fun, and being on the clock has kept the pace moving pretty nicely. As for the group, we're definitely more investigative, although a more combat-oriented member wouldn't be frowned on. So far I've been doing a lot of the shooting.
I'm working on a war vet: Tough 4. Should be done by tomorrow.
cheers
Wealth: 2d4 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (4, 2) + 1 + 1 = 8
What's your rules on restricted weapons in weapons locker?
With his Wealth bonus, I think I can only afford items of 8 and lower and one rifle, because they are 17-18, because the roll with be 2d6+1, which averages to 8.
Is that right?
I figure, the character arrives by bus with a bag. Still working on a name, otherwise, I'd post the build.
cheers
no major restriction at this point. Just nothing crazy like a missile launcher.
Also unlikely as the goverment has quarantine the town since they are afraid a an outbreak of lycantropy and or vampirism.
They have a cover story in place of course but until department 7 (aka the men in black) give the ok there wont be any buses coming in or out.
Still assume you made it past the quarantine somehow.
You were most likely sent by harvey. See the beginning of the adventure.
OK here he is.
I kind of punted on the equipment. He has two expensive items: an undercover vest and his gun.
Please review.
Where are the PCs physically in the gameplay thread?
cheers
They just came back to town to plan their next move they are currently standing outside the hotel.
I really liked d20 Modern/Urban Arcana. Is anybody going toward any particular advanced classes? If your team needs combat oomph I could build toward a Gunslinger or Soldier. Maybe a Fast/Strong Gunslinger/Martial Artist combo. Conceptually I'm thinking a sort of gun-fu fighter; less Supernatural and more Hard Boiled, but with more demon fighting.
yeah this somehow started out as supernatural but became castlevania

I'm currently building toward Gunslinger, although I think we could definitely use a Soldier type, or a Martial Artist.
I could do a Strong 3/Soldier 1. Maybe a former Department 7 guy? Will Smith from Men in Black but he quit for some reason. That would probably need DM's permission.
Or he could just be a straight up former soldier who saw something weird and got sucked into the Hunter crowd.
I'll throw together some stats.
Threw together some stats for the Strong 3/Soldier 1. He's definitely more action oriented than Sam and Dean, and he doesn't have the knowledge skills to pull off Hunting alone. But he'll be a great addition to a team that's in need of somebody to stand up front and shoot things with a shotgun.
Make and into post when your ready...All new arrivals came together sent by Harvey for plot convenience. You background and reason for being a hunter is up to you.
