Torn between a Pathfinder Chronicler or Duelist

I went with Rogue average for gold, spent 127 gold out of the rogue's 140 leaving 13 gp. Her item is a Sleeve of Many Garments.

Writing up some background now.

As for Shiori's question, I think Ameiko is in her early to mid 20's. If she was 16 when she bought the Dragon, she'd be 22 in RotRL and then enough time's passed for Second Darkness to happen and Shelalu to be out of town for a few years.

If we're talking older then 23, I may have to reevaluate how old Shiori was when her mother died, I don't want her to be too young to not remember loosing her mother that well, but I don't want her to be too far from the age of a typical level 1 human rogue (16-19), if Ameiko is 25, and Shiori 19 for example, that would mean Shiori was 7 when her mother died, as Ameiko was 13 when her mother died.

Here is Darinius, the Dragon Disciple. My PFS number is 41462.

I haven't quite finished purchasing equipment bu all the important bits are there along with description and background.

His item is a mw longspear (of Tian origin) decorated with exotic and unfamiliar dragons. He stole it from the collection of one of the many people who have failed to help him and it is the only clue that he has found so far to help him identify his true draconic heritage.

As for inter-character connections I have a few ideas:

Valerie, if you go with your second idea, Darinius has also recently escaped from an arcane scholar who was pretending to help him but was in fact just stringing him along to use as a research subject. Maybe your wizard was the one who informed him that he was being taken advantage of and he tagged along when she ran away.

Exiel, Darinius' spear is an antique ultimately from Tian Xia and he is actively inquiring about where it is from and what the significance of the dragons pictured on it which he feels a certain affinity for are. Maybe it is from Xa Hoi and Exiel is one of the few people over the years who seems to know something about it since he recognizes where it is from.

Shiori, Darinius has a nagging feeling that the Kaijitsus, as fellow outsiders might be able to guide him in some way. Since coming to Sandpoint he has tried to get to know members of the family in an attempt to figure out what this sort of premonition he has about them is. This would apply to both Ameiko as well as her siblings.

Let me know if any of those hooks seems interesting or if any other characters would find an unusual not quite realized sorcerer whose heritage does not match any familiar species of dragon interesting.

Although of obvious Tian descent, I'm not really sure how much of outsiders Ameiko, and by extension Shiori would be. Since the Kaijitsu family was one of the founding members of Sandpoint, and given the age of the city, it is my assumption that Ameiko and Shiori would have both been born in Sandpoint, of course that is no reason why an outsider would not view them as outsiders, a family of Tian descent would stick out in Varisia after all.

Shiori Kaijitsu wrote:

That is exactly what I was thinking from Darinius' perspective. The only thing he knows about his spear which is probably a clue to his heritage is that it is possibly Tian in origin. So he would find the Kaijitsu family doubly interesting.

The underlying idea is more that he has basically nothing to go on, even after years, and he is grasping at straws at this point.

Grand Lodge

maybe a paladin

Shiori has background now, of course a lot of it is just experiencing Ameiko's story from another point of view, but what can you really do with a sheltered younger sibling.

Also, I assume since we can be a Prestige class at level 1 that the Prestige class can also be the character's favored class, and I treated it as such.

I think that Darinius will have been staying at the inn for a while now, trying to get one of the Kaijutsus to notice him. He is way too charismatic to actually be creepy or very awkward, but the fact he is trying to get attention is noticeable.

I want the running joke to be that he got his hands on a Tian-Common phrase book at some point, so while he can't actually speak Tian, he keeps trying in order to get the attention of someone who might know something about Tian Xia. Trying to have a little humor will make Darinius way easier to RP than if he was super serious about finding himself all the time and I think his 8 Wis justifies him being kind of a dumbass about certain things.

So, he's likely to do something akin to ordering carp (koi) but instead admitting his love (koi)?

:)

Ok, I think I have a somewhat workable "Minkaian" version of Shiori's name, if it's distracting I'll remove it from the alias, but it doesn't translate well because Kaijitsu is frankly nonsense.

Shiori is a real Japanese name however and can be written as 詩織 for poem and weave (basically her name is written poem weave).

Well any of the shenangegans that can happen when someone thinks they can pronounce a tonal language.

I would render the mangled Tian by translating it into Chinese badly and then replacing a bunch of characters with near homophones. As long as I don't over-use it it should be pretty funny.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I've been living in China for a couple years now, so I've been wanting to play Jade Regent. MiniGM having 7,000+ posts to his name makes me feel confident he won't disappear, so I'm interested. I also have a lot of free time compared to most people, and I'm usually the most frequent poster in the games I'm in.

As for a character....Hmmm. The PRC thing is really interesting. I think I'll write up a human student of war who is Ameiko Kaijitsu's little brother. He's a genius level intellect who has been voraciously studying combat techniques, military history and tactics from the time he learned to read when he was three years old. He spent a stint in Magnimar as a teenager, because of the greater availability of information there. He has recently returned to Sandpoint as a young adult, eager for adventure.

More details, an alias with character crunch etc will follow later.

My PFS number is 12663.

Edit: I speak decent Chinese, but am totally ignorant of Japanese. Since Minkai is all Japanese flavored that's a little annoying. However, I will be using traditional Chinese for Tian because it's the same as old Japanese and the Dragon Empires are all remnants of Imperial Lung Wa which is cleary a China analogue.

Well Tien would be traditional Chinese anyway, Minkaian would be Japanese, and as far as I know Ameiko doesn't even speak Minkaian.

Also, it might be interesting for Ameiko to have two younger siblings.

Avoiding getting too many posts on Shiori, in case I need to remove the Kanji, since it wouldn't be able to be removed if I get 10 posts on her.

Ha, this might work well. I grew up in Singapore (though I now live in Australia, so I too am fluent in Mandarin (learned and regularly used it from young).

Darinius: I like your thinking! The spear is a common weapon in Chinese cultures used by all members of the military from foot soldiers to generals, and Xa Hoi is very Chinese-themed part of Tien if I recall correctly (and I think I do). I'm finishing up work for the day right now, but I'll give this more thought on the way home.

Should have a full stat-out for Exiel in a few hours, after I get home.

Hey this sounds interesting. I'm on the east coast of Australia for the time zone, I think thats close to singapore time by an hour or so. I would like to submit a halfling gunslinger. I can get the crunch up in an hour or so.

I'll finish my background tomorrow, but I've made a human transmutation wizard that should be a hoot to roleplay.

Lantern Lodge

GM, my character sheet is in my profile. Backstory posted earlier.

Darinius, I've got a tale to tell about your spear if we both get in. It will be linked to Exiel's past, though Exiel will not contest your ownership of it so long as you do not sully the spear's storied history.

A man of apparent Tien origin sips his tea quietly at a table set in the Rusty Dragon's balcony overlooking the street. He stares off into the distance, lost in thought for the moment, though from his bearing you nonetheless perceive the physique and disciplined focus of a trained warrior.

Sovereign Court

I'm creating a Tengu Barbarian Rogue for the time being.
I'm basing him on Wind somewhat from the storm riders.
I also had the idea of him name being rough translation of Tien based on Chinese.
I live in Singapore so it's nice to see others near the timezone here.

Galford Dao. Foster Child of Koya

Valerie: The UMD Rogue is interesting. Arcanist is fine.

Sarranae: Looks fine, but note that you would not get the bonus spells from the bloodline or bloodline abilities , just the spell progression. Also from your story I would say that you have simple armor only. Vague memories and it looks like you spent a feat to use the Bastard Sword.

Shiori-Looks like the group got the age right ☺ Lets say she is 25 and call it good. And that is fair to let the PrC be your favored class. I had not thought of that

Darinius-Looks Good

Jelani-Looking forward to seeing the idea! And you are correct I will not disappear, I am not a genius DM, but I think my players have a good time!

Exiel-You are short one trait I believe. Also when you have a chance pop your backstory into the profile for ease of finding it when it comes to final decision time

GAlford-Your point buy looks like it is 20, it needs to be 15 for this. When you get PFS credit you can apply it to any character of the proper level, even though we are not playing this game by the PFS rules

All my Eastern Hemisphere Submitters!-Love that there are so many of you, lets do a bit of a test, throughout the day today I will make some posts, they will say something like “Hi Eastern Hemisphere”, just use the reply button to each one when you see it. This does not mean that if you miss one you are out, it is just me getting a feel on how posting would progress. Make sense?

MiniGM wrote:

Ok, Shiori is going to be 4 years younger then, so that will put Shiori at 21, as I want her to remember her mother, even if she has been dead for more then half her life.

Sovereign Court

20? Let's see.

Strength 12 12(2)
Dexterity 14 12(2) Racial +2
Constitution 12 14(5) Racial -2
Intelligence 14 14(5)
Wisdom 13 11(1) Racial +2
Charisma 10 10(0)
Total:15

That's the point buy, I used. Is there something I missed?

my mistake, I must have read something wrong on my phone this morning. your good night

Sovereign Court

Phew! I'm glad. BTW, by Eastern hemisphere you mean like me? not sure which is which. lol

Every one in Asia or Australia, anyone 8+ hours from the American wear coast time Zone

And yes I know there are places 8 hours from pst that are in the same hemisphere but work with me! Lol

Ah. Got it. I'm still up at the moment. I think there's quite a few.

Right, like England, as the American west coast is GMT -8.

For what it's worth MiniGM, I'm in California, so I'm PST too.

Armor Proficiency Medium removed. It's a fair cop.

Bloodline removed as it sounds like nothing applies.

And yes, she did spend a Feat (the one you get at 1st level for any character) to get the bastard sword proficiency and another (the Fighter Bonus Feat at Eldritch Knight level 1) for Weapon Focus. The meta-gamer min/maxer in me would prefer to just go with longsword or rapier and spend that Feat on something else, but in my head I picture her with a bastard sword. So be it.

Let me know if anything's amiss or needs a little more polish.

CST (UTC-6:00) here.

Crunch will come later, but here's the creamy filling.

Appearance:
Allysen stands little taller than the sword she wields. Her coppery hair is kept tied back with strips of leather scrap. She has an face that can deliver dazzling smiles and withering glares with equal ease. Her large eyes are blue flecked with silver. Her frame is petite, with well toned muscles that hide her true strength. Her voice is soft and soothing, like a cool spring in a forest.

Personality:
Allysen is a person of extremes. She is happy and easy going most of the time, but beneath lies a volcanic temper fueled by a righteous anger. Compassion comes easy for her, and is slow to anger as a result. Battle, however, quickly brings this to the fore, and more than one goblin's last sight was of an enraged heaven-touched girl about to split its skull.

Background:
Cheliax is known for its Diabolism and oppression of its people, especially tieflings. What many do not know is that aasimars suffer the same, or worse. As luck would have it. Allysen was born to a noble family that was slowly climbing up the social ladder from it's relative obscurity. Her parents, far from delighted, announced that the child was stillborn, and secretly sold her to the slavers to raise.

Thus began thirteen years of hellish servitude. Finding that her voice was well suited to singing, the slave-masters hired tutors from the finest opera houses and companies. Success was rewarded with condescension, and failure was meet with the rod. On her ninth nameday, she was sold to a Chelish captain that was quickly climbing the ranks. To him, she was a trophy, something to be brought out on special occasions to brag about, then locked away so that only he could admire her. Kindness was not a virtue that the Chelish covet, and her new owner was worse than the slave-masters in his wrath. Every misstep was met with cutting remarks and anger. Anger which began to fuel the budding fury deep in her heart.

On her thirteenth nameday, that fury broke its chains. Her master was drunk. Brooding over how he'd recently been passed over for a prestigious command for a captain that was junior to him. As he went deeper into his cups, he became more abusive. The cutting remarks became bellowed insults, which quickly turned to bruising blows. After the seventh strike, Allysen's rage broke free. Her fury was so sudden, so vicious, that the captain was taken by surprise as her knee found the most sensitive spot it could. Already half way to unconsciousness, the captain passed out.

Once her master was on the floor, Allysen regained her senses. Quivering from the anger that had took over, she grabbed his coin purse, and a plain, finely-made suit of armor. She ran for it, making it to the docks and onto a ship before anyone was aware that she was gone. By the time the captain awoke, Allysen was on her way to Magnimar.

A month after her escape, she made it to Sandpoint. Troubles had recently plagued the small town, and she was out of coin, with nothing but her stolen suit of armor to her name. Ameiko allowed her to stay at the Rusty Dragon. In return, she helped clean the tavern and serve its patrons. Over the past six years, she's come to follow Desna, the Starsong, and become fast friends with Ameiko. Recently, however, wanderlust has begun to pull at her. Each passing day brings the young woman closer to setting out on a journey. To where? She doesn't care, as long as she can return with tales of her own.

I didn't hear back about the Ratfolk Alchemist, so I decided to go in a different direction. Meet Asako, the Kensai.

Asako was born and raised in Sandpoint, the only daughter of two glass artisans who worked in the Kaijitsu Glassworks. Asako knew little of why her parents chose to leave Minkai until she discovered a beautiful antique Katana stashed in her family's attic. She was transfixed by its beauty and couldn't understand why her parents were so upset when they saw her with it.

In a fit of pique, Asako ran into the hinterlands with the sword, and was soon set upon by a horrible Bugbear. Asako's feeble attempt to defend herself using the katana only amused him, but before he could drag her off to unknown tortures, he was beset by a flurry of arrows. Quick as lightning, Shalelu grabbed the young Asako and flung her over her shoulder and escaped. Asako begged the elf not to take her home, fearing her parent's wrath, but Shalelu was adamant. Still, she took some time to talk to Asako's parents first, and it was then that the girl came to understand their feelings.

Asako's parents were descended from rival warrior clans in Minkai, and had initially met during a tenuous peace between their Houses. They soon fell in love, and knowing that their families would never allow them to marry, they forsook their duties and honor, as well as the practice of violence. Her father sold his sword to pay for the trip across the roof of the world, and they'd kept her mother's swords hidden away as a nest egg. Her parents remained uneasy with Asako's fascination with swordplay, but under Shalelu's advice they decided to allow her to choose her own path, as they had done when they were young.

Swordplay enhanced the young girl's focus, and she turned her keen intellect towards the study of magic at the academy in Sandpoint. Tragically, Asako's parents were slain when goblins attacked the Glassworks. She still feels guilty that she was not present to protect them, and has spent more time of late practicing on her own, in the wilderness. Secretly she hopes to encounter that Bugbear again, to prove to herself that her skills are more than simply empty performance.

Asako is a quiet, somewhat withdrawn young woman with very short hair and a lithe, athletic build. She is not anti-social, but seldom sticks out in a crowd or draws attention to herself.

I know, I almost went with Ameiko but I figured the resemblance to Ameiko would be too great if I just used Ameiko, but there's like 3 Ameiko avatars, and not much else on the female side.

I like the one you went with. No idea what I'm going to end up with.

Okay, I found something that might work.

Oops sorry I missed the ratfilk question

It's fine in theory but remember that you would be the only ratfolk in standpoint and what that might mean

It's fine; I like the Kensai idea much better, and I already came up with a background and stats for it.

I'm finished with most of Gorou's crunchy bits. The rest and fluff will follow as I have time.

Gorou Kaijitsu

(note, he's not a Kuwa Oni, but the mask of his armor looks like one)

Went ahead and removed the Kanji, decided against it.

Also decided I wanted to check so...

Submissions, sorted by NPC choice:

Ameiko:
Shiori Kaijitsu - Master Spy 1
Darinius - Dragon Disciple 1
Gorou Kaijitsu - Student of War 1

Koya:
Gilford Dao - Rogue 1

Shalelu:
Asako Hamada - Magus 1

Allysen - ? (no crunch yet, but I think Ameiko, from background)

Interest
Everyone else

If I skipped someone, it's because I only saw interest and not a definite character crunch/background, but I may have missed someone if there was more then that.

I love the idea that this could become the Kaijitsu Family Vacation.

I'm willing to change campaign traits to make this happen :D

Liberty's Edge

Hi this is Chillblame. here is my submission, Vera Fireshot, Halfling gunslinger, pistolero. I still have to do my background and choose a campaign trait, and I will do so work permitting (maybe a couple of hours, bosses are so unreasonable, especially when you are your own boss: I owe, I owe its off to work I go))

Cool just do you know u will be using the errata putting a limit on free actions. Shouldn't matter until higher level but something to keep in mind

Lantern Lodge

Hello! Sorry for taking awhile to respond. If I'd checked in before going to work I would have been much more punctual. XD
