Going to post, and then the power went out at our house. Not going to post combat via phone.

Alset Kirk |

Finally, Alset rolls a critical hit, and it's confirmed. Combined with his Smite Evil, there's damage, lots of damage to Daruthek. If Achahut hits, this badie may be finished.

GM Mervikoth |

I'm going for anticlimax at the finale here. I guess. Haha.
Great job Alset! I'll give you XP when I get home but you should be level 6 now. Congrats!

Alset Kirk |

What kind of check do we need to answer Achahut's question about the magical qualities of the spear and armor? Use Magic Device or a knowledge check?

Achahut the Reborn |

When we move on to the next campaign, we should have Mud as the narrator pass on the tale of the Muddy Mariners and pass on Harrell to the next group, haha
Obviously Merv will do as he pleases and I have no ties to this, so if this does not happen I probably won't even remember that I suggested it

Kargold "Stonewall"Steelpounder |

Rather selfishly, I'd like to be able to get Stonewall to level 7 because then he can make his own magical armor/shields. Not a necessity but it would be a natural point for him to stop adventuring.
Also, I'm all for Mud as Narrator.

GM Mervikoth |

I think you need Detect Magic and Knowledge (Arcana).
As for what's next, that's up to you. I'll keep posting here to wrap up loose ends, but I won't be posting significant things until the next adventure we do. This adventure is at its (official) end; the module Ire of the Storm by Thurston Hillman is finished.
Would you want to continue playing as your current characters, or create new ones? You can each make this decision individually. Would you want to continue playing on this Second Wave Campaign message board, or start a new one? We will be starting at level 6 regardless.
I'm looking at starting the new adventure proper (meaning I'll expect everyone to start posting every weekday again) on January 31 or February 7. It'll be one I make up from scratch, but you all will definitely have more agency on what happens. I know you guys struggled with a clear goal in the beginning, but I think you have a better handle of it now. (If not, there will be a Mud-esque GMNPC with you. Mud will stay as foreign advisor between both Cahshil and Pridon's Hearth.)
If you're unsure whether to keep your character or not, I'd suggest going for a more complicated class. The slow speed at which we post means you have longer to look over your spells/abilities than in person. Also, I know I'd be bored just hitting things with a big stick every single combat (you may not though! That's okay). And, balance-wise, martial characters will start to be less effective at higher levels.
But, you've got a little more than a month to figure that out. Feel free to post what you're thinking of doing with your character. You can even keep the same "character," but rebuild your stats from scratch if you want, like Alset did switching from melee to archery.

GM Mervikoth |

Also, I have a new rule if I haven't told you before:
No two PCs can have their names start with the same letter.
No more Odie/Ood or Alset/Achahut. YES this is super petty, I know, I know. But I like to abbreviate by first initial and this makes it difficult.
Carry on.

Kargold "Stonewall"Steelpounder |

I'm torn. I've become attached to Stonewall, but I've got an idea for a monk that I wan't to try out who would not be front line (more support, Ood knows what I'm talking about!) and I'm also considering some caster options.
The monk is a crazy mix of 4 archetypes, so it would be perfect for play-by-post.

To Muddy Mariners both old and new
So after 300 D20 rolls here are the results. They have improved from the earlier rates (63% below average rolls) to 54% below average rolls, but are still not quite balanced.
D20 Quartile Analysis:
Dice .... Count ... %
1-5 ....... 89 ... 30% <Boo>
6-10 ..... 71 ... 24% <Acceptable>
11-15 ... 75 ... 25% <Acceptable>
16-20 ... 65 ... 22% <Unacceptable>
As you can see, the low end still out paces all other quartiles by 5 to 8 percentage points, while the high end lags behind all others.
On average each die should be rolled 15 times (300 rolls/20 dice) or 5%.
Five Most Frequent Dice Rolls (and ties):
Dice ...... Count
1 ................. 24 <boo>
3, 4, 11 ....... 20
13, 14, 17 ... 16
Five Least Frequent Dice Rolls (and ties):
Dice ...... Count
16, 12 ............. 11
19, 18, 15, 5 ... 12 <Boo>
Observations:
- 1. The 1 die is still the most frequently rolled at 8.0% by a significant amount. The expected amount is 5%.
- 2. The 16 and 12 die are the least frequently rolled at 3.67% less than half of the 1 die rolls.
- 3. The good news is that the 20 die has been improved to 14 rolls or 4.67%, which is just below the expected average of 15. It is still just below the cut off point of below average rolls.
- 4. All of least frequent but one are above average. The first three of the most frequent die rolls are below average. This is out of balance.
Conclusion:
It may be that the balance has been restored, but it taking time for the numbers to catch up to that balanced position after such a poor start. But, I still think that Alset has terrible, horrible back luck rolling. Except for that Crit on Daruthek. That was nice, worth the wait.
That said, the D8 rolls are similarly unbalanced. Here's the raw data for the 167 D8 rolls.
Dice .. Count
4 ....... 30
3 ....... 25
1 ....... 24
5 ....... 21
2 ....... 20
7 ....... 19
6 ....... 18
8 ....... 10
As you can see the below average die are the top 3 and 4 of 5. While the above average die are the bottom, especially that elusive "8" with only 10 rolls (half what it should be) as compared to 30 for the "4" (1.5 x what it should be. This is not balanced. It is expected that each die be rolled 20.875 times in this distribution only the "5" and the "2" are close.
One final note: For all dice rolls:
Count = 517
Below average = 283 (55%)
Only the D6 are at an even 50%.

Ood Ironforged |

fun figures Alset! I like the idea of keeping Ood but am also interested in trying something a little different. I'll put some thought into it. Redoing Ood might be a fun switch too though.

What about *my* rolls, Alset? Care to spend a month going back and cataloging them? LOL JK.
How did everyone like the Campaign excel tab? I honestly fell out of the habit of using the Achievements page, for highest damage and all. Other than that I think it served its purpose quite well.

No, I'm not going back. I tried and got through the first 500 posts for all of us. I don't have that much time to play catch up. I could do mine as I rolled them, so the time involved was just part of the post creation.
The campaign spreadsheet with its many tabs for tracking just about everything was great. I wish there was an app or website that would allow for the tracking of the individual characters, supplies, spells cast, etc. I would often forget how many arrows I had remaining or how many charges were left on healing wands. An automated tool would make that and checking achievements much simpler. Does something like this exist?

Alset Kirk |

For Your Further Die Roll Consumption
Here are Alset's roll breakdowns by type. This show the impact of the poor rolls on various types of rolls.
These are for things with a count/occurrence > 5. These are all D20 except Damage (D8) and Heal (D6)
TYPE ....... COUNT ... BAD (% BELOW AVG)
Attack .......... 126 ..... 66 (52%)
Damage ....... 102 ..... 60 (59%)
Heal ................ 91 ..... 52 (57%)
Knowledge .... 62 ...... 35 (56%)
Perception .... 40 ...... 21 (53%)
Diplomacy .... 24 ....... 8 (33%)
Sense Motive . 9 ....... 8 (89%)
Only Diplomacy was on the plus side.
And that Sense Motive was just awful.

Merry Christmas all!
Merry Christmas to all elves, men and free peoples (including dwarves, lizardfolk, and half-orcs).

Mud storms out the back door. "I don't get no respect," he mutters, never to be seen again.

Ahem, this was not an in game comment. Mud could NOT have heard this. I was attempting to quote Tolkien and make sure that Garrett's characters were included. My apologies, but no disrespect was intended.
And, what about Rova 22 and the planned meeting at Cashil? How will Alset do this without Mud?

GM Mervikoth |

Haha, I'm just having fun. The discussion forum is for jokes like these.
Mud's going with you on Rova 22.

Alset's wisdom is 7. He misses the subtle humor, sarcasm, etc.
Apparently, mine is too. :)
Achahut the Reborn |

So, what are we thinking next? Anyone got new characters brewing or are you planning on taking your existing guy on? What class are you looking at? GM says he doesn’t have a “theme” this time. (Like the last one we knew would be kinda dinosaur themed)

GM Mervikoth |

For the GMNPC, I want him/her to be a little more active than Mud was. A trip-focused build, or a crit-fishing/crit-passing-off build (Butterfly's Sting), or something with actual spellcasting to give you guys Haste. Mine is lowest on the priority tier, so feel free to steal any of these vague ideas I have. I probably won't roll up the character until the NPC actually gets into a fight anyway, which will be like February.

Kargold "Stonewall"Steelpounder |

I’m still thinking about a Contemplative Ki mystic sensei Qinggong monk...it’s a monk with almost all of its core features traded out.
I stumbled across this monster when researching just how many archetypes you can stack on one class. This one tied for most but also had the honor of being the most playable.
Also, Flu is not fun.

Alset Kirk |

I can do whatever is best for the party. If we need to round out the party, I can fill in the gaps. I'm even willing to NOT be a paladin for the first time in a decade or two.

GM Mervikoth |

Stink about the flu. Hope you get to feeling better.

*Gasps*

Kargold "Stonewall"Steelpounder |

Just realized that Mud leveled twice in one adventuring day. He leveled after the wrestling event with Ood and the Large Lizardfold to level 4 and then at Daruthek to level 5. Almost exactly 4 months apart in real life though.

GM Mervikoth |

[dice=New character health]8 + 5d8 + 6
Average is 41. Tough luck.
[dice=health]5d12+12
Perfectly average.
[dice=New Character HP (Warpriest):]8 + 5d8
Average is 33. Not as bad as Stoney.
I'll try and set up a new campaign page right now.

Do it here like everyone else just for fairness sake.
