stormraven... you forgot the tuppence... never forget the tuppence...

And if I we're to use a Magic 8 ball... it would need be Norse-ified... with responses like: Odin wills it; By Thor's hammer there is no doubt; The Norns are undecided; Winter approaches... all is shrouded by snow; I would sooner agree than I would trust Loki or something like that.

Liberty's Edge

Any sort of timeline Voice?

The anticipation is killing me!

I committed to giving 24 hours for final responses to the batch of questions I put out yesterday - which means that I will release the final group makeup between 17:00 and 18:00 in GMT +8 time.

That will be in roughly six and a half hours from now.

I actually have a Norn's Eye... It is basically a Magic 8 Ball that gives cryptic Norn-like sayings for the answers.

That's 1am my time.

It's going to be a long night!

I'll still be wide awake. Freyja got off schedule over the extended weekend at her dad's, and tomorrow is a snow day so I'm not pushing for a sane bedtime tonight.

In my experience, the best "magic 8-ball" is a decent lager. The answer's intensity is directly proportional to the amount of "consulting" you do.

i prefer the magic highball, with two fingers of scotch in it. only i like to use the index and pinkie instead of index and middle.

Aha! You must also be an expat in China VoV. I too am GMT+8. Thus we both spend too much time trolling these boards.

Feranfox's Question Responses:

Is he a devotee of Gozreh?
No, but he can sympathize with his followers. Feranfox is very much a worshiper of the Green Faith: he wouldn't appreciate the structure of an official religion, and he prefers natural chaos and the freedom to act according to your own ideals over following the often arbitrary rules of a mysterious deity.

Does he encourage his cougar into reckless behaviour alone? - or only with him at the cat's side?
I'm not sure if I understand this, but basically Feranfox and Ivar are a combat duo. Perhaps Ivar will enter combat one round sooner because Feranfox might cast a buffing spell, but the idea is that they are flanking buddies and will always fight together. Feranfox is not flippant with Ivar's life, and would be truly devastated at losing such an important friend -- he wouldn't encourage needlessly reckless behavior.

Goodluck all! This is a truly impressive recruitment thread.

DM:
Quote:
I'm assuming most of the dialogue between the two aspects will be internal, unless forced out during combat? - could you see Maeve taking control in non-combat scenarios - and if so, which?

I think in moments of stress or crisis, when their goals or preferred courses of action differ, Maeve might speak up and they would use their shared voice to argue. I also think that as Halla's oracle abilities strengthen, Maeve will be able to assert herself more. Long-term, she might try to wrest control to make pivotal decisions or try to influence Halla enough to "remake" her more as the young woman Maeve was -- always for Halla's own good, of course, from Maeve's perspective.

Quote:
Do Maeve and Halla have nicknames for each other - or do they use truenames?

Halla knows Maeve only as Maeve; it's how they were "introduced" from the time she was an infant. I think Maeve has concealed things about her life from Halla, at first out of concern for traumatizing a child and then, perhaps, out of habit and not wanting to revisit painful memories herself, and it's never occurred to Halla to question her. Some of the situations Halla is likely to face in the course of an AP might bring her to question Maeve and reverse the balance of power in their relationship, forcing her to reveal more about herself.

I have to admit to not knowing a lot about true names, but if anyone were to know Halla's, it would be Maeve, having had so long to poke around her soul from the inside. I think if she does know it, it would be one of the things she attempts to hide from Halla, to hold in reserve until it's needed.

I am GMT +10 in Sydney and this is awesome news.

DM Jelani - close, I am in Kuala Lumpur Malaysia.

And though it's slightly early - I notice that all who were asked questions yesterday have replied, and thus I am in a suitably suitable position of suitability.

With no delay I present the final twelve that have been chosen for the groupings… each one hidden momentarily behind a spoiler:

Touch the wooden gate in the wall you never saw before. Say “please” before you open the latch:
Hilde Alfborne - MPCampell - Paladin - Half-Fey
Bastagar Swiftthicket - Twigs - Rogue – Gnome
Cearb - Meowzebub - Rogue(knife master) – Gnome
Markus Septimus Hape - SurplusRaine - Wizard - Human(Chelaxian)
Kelgar Frostbeard - wakedown - Inquisitor(Witchhunter) - Dwarf
Olaf Erikson - Luke_Perry - Bard(Savage Skald) - Human(Ulfen)

Phrase on the spoiler is shamelessly stolen from Neil Gaiman’s poem Instructions… which suits the group makeup I think.

Fire is needful to him who is come in, and whose knees are frozen; food and rainment a man requires, who o’er the fell has travelled.:

Skäne Ingvârssonn - Black Dow - Fighter(Viking)
Elghund - Shifty - Ranger - Orc
Rikka - stormraven - Sorcerer(tattooed - Draconic Bloodline) - Human(Ulfen)
Klò Björninnsson - Eben theQuiet - Druid(Bear Shaman) - Human(Ulfen)
Halla Ingendatter - Joana - Oracle(Possessed) - Human(Ulfen)
Annalisa - Twilightrose - Barbarian - Human(Ulfen)

Title of spoiler is stanza 3 of The High One’s Lay from the Poetic Edda.

Could those un/lucky few please sound off on the Discussion thread that has now been opened. Accessible via the campaign header bar.

To those that have not been selected, I freely offer you my thanks and praise. All of you did a lot of work to put together applications to the letter of and in the spirit of how I plan to run the campaigns. Selection was particularly difficult as you might imagine… and I actually came down to making one decision by coin toss between two possibles.

As a DM I generally don’t designate alternates – but I can say that I will take any replacements from the pool of original applicants to the PbP. If anyone wants directed feedback as to why they weren’t selected – please feel free to post in thread or contact me via PM and I shall fill you in.

So thanks and good luck to all, and good gaming. *salutes*

Alas! Well congrats to the lucky few, best of luck with the game.

Damn. Oh well, hopefully some more recruitments for the AP will show up.

Alas, indeed! Congrats to those picked.

Randver, I'll see you back at Leroung's plague-ridden pyramid, or aboard the Empty Lighthouse.

DM Jelani wrote:

I had the same thought, but found it cold comfort, given how many very strong competitors we'll have going in.

See what I did there?

Liberty's Edge

Bummer.

Congrats to the winners.

NOOOOOUUUUUU.....oh well. Won't be the last one. Damn if I wasn't hopeful, though. Just the application process alone makes me very keen on watching for your future campaigns, VoV. Might even lurk this one a bit just to see if I learn anything/see a great story.

Shadow Lodge

47 applicants is no easy task for any GM!

I'm certain there will be a veritable wellspring of Reign of Winter games popping up now, so hopefully there's a warm, comfortable home for everyone (or rather - a cold, frigid wastleland to call home??)

I just wish I could find a AP thread that I could use to learn about Golarion. Especially a Rise Of The Runelords Aniversary Edition Campaign because I apparently have the perfect Fighter or Ranger build.

Ah yes, too bad. Have fun all those selected (and the DM of course)

Shucks. Ah well, c'est la vie, right? Congratulations to the folks who made it in, 'twas a hard-fought battle and your earned your place at the table.

On that bittersweet note, I actually wouldn't mind a little directed feedback, if you've got some to spare. Aside from the obvious tiny flaw of not getting my poem finished, that is.

My apologies to those of you who didn't receive a place in the game. I happen to have heard that there might be another Reign of Winter campaign starting up pretty soon on these forums (indeed, I'm sure there will be plenty) but I don't know many people in particular this DM will be looking for. Keep your eyes open, though, with a little tweaking to fit another DM's standards I'm sure many of your characters could easily be carried over to his recruitment thread.

Rannveig - not finishing the poem didn't have any impact upon your consideration. Ultimately you were one of the last 4-5 to get compared for a final spot in the Ulfen group. I knew that I wanted to have a character of druidic bent with an animalistic nature.

In the end - two petty things were the tipping point:

1. I'd already selected three female characters by that point. As chauvanistic as it sounds I preferred gender balance over gender imbalance.
2. The backstory of the witch and the wolf didn't really vibe with me. It's not that it's bad by any means, just a personal preference sort of thing.

Hmm, I wonder how you'd get replacements in if you're in part 5 of the AP. Should be fun.

DM VoV, I'm actually quite curious what made you decide not to select Vidak?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Aye - replacements will be a mite difficult come AP volume 4... but we'll take it one step at a time.

Cuan:
You were under consideration more for the Ulfen group, but unfortunately were up in direct comparison against Black Dow for the Vikingr spot.

I've been gaming with BD on here for almost two years now and he's a rage-fueled Scotsman in real life as well as on the page - so in this case it was pure bias on my part.

After I'd added on a Barbarian and the Orcish Ranger to the mix I didn't really want to stretch beyond three frontline full BAB spots - so I looked at other types of characters for the other three positions.

Grand Lodge

Heartbreaking! But understandable. Had enough fun making the character :p

Love to hear some feedback on Randver if you get the chance VOW.

I'll probably leave off applying for another Reign of Winter recruitment for a while, its an AP that really appeals to me and I want to be sure I'm running with a DM with a strong posting history, and who puts together a recruitment thread half as impressive as this one. It not an AP I want to risk doing half heartedly. And I almost certainly would not apply with Randver.

Randver:

Given that my fey group essentially picked itself (at least in my thought process), you were under consideration for the Ulfen group. In essence I was looking for a partially more red-handed and morally ambiguous vibe, and I'd picked out three full BAB classes from the other applicants. So that crowded you out.

As with most of the others there was absolutely nothing wrong with your application - just that 12 into 48ish leaves 36 by the side.

Feedback on Sigrun would be appreciated. Have fun.

Sigrun:

There was nothing wrong with your application - everything was there and in detail. Ultimately I just didn't get much of a vibe for the rage aspect, and her separation from Ulfen or any society made her a little less interesting than other options to me.

Requesting feed back.

congrats all, good luck to you and the DM. I am interested in filling a spot if one arises. And yes any feedback on Tyrnvald would be nice. thanks.

Lloyd:

I really liked your witch, and had the groups shaped up differently she probably would have made the cut. But with the fey group falling into place neatly there was only the Ulfen one remaining. I didn't want to dilute the rough and Norse feel by pulling in a more exotic character - both from the witch perspective and the race.

Failing that your application was great and you gave good reasoned answers to the questions I had.

Ashe:

I didn't personally feel much of a pull from the background - and ultimately the Ulfen group wouldn't have been a good fit for a Paladin. I know they aren't very good reasons... but it is what it is.

Dark Archive

Congrats to all. Enjoy this campaign, it looks to be a good one.

VoV, if I could get some feedback on how to improve Skaldi, please have at it.

Congrats to all - it will be interesting to see how the two very different groups fair. Heavy melee vs. heavy skill.

Bangs his head on the wall - I should have submitted a White Haired Witch. I should have submitted a White Haired Witch.

Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you VoV.
For that, it is probably obvious that I am withdrawing my entry. I want to answer your questions & this looks like it will be an amazing AP, but I think I have too much on my plate already.

twilsemail:

Ultimately, for this campaign - I was disinclined to take a Summoner. Your application was good and the answers to questions were well reasoned and written - but wasn't enough to overcome my bias against the summoner here.

Thanks and makes sense.

Dark Archive

No worries Boss. Like I said, if nothing else, you did a great job of helping me flesh Skaldi out. He'll see play sometime soon. Either in a Reign of Winter campaign or a Skull and Shackles campaign. I do like the idea of him having been lost at sea a bit better, TBH.

I just wish someone were recruiting for a S&S campaign these days.

Congratulations to all who made it in - and thank you DM VoV for the opportunity. Tough choices all around. :)

Congrats to all who made it. I don't envy the DM his task in having to choose. As I am sure there will still be plenty of competition for any future iterations of this campaign, did you see any glaring weaknesses in Thorolf that I could shore up?

** spoiler omitted **

Fair enough. Sad enough, too, but also fair enough. Thanks for the feedback, and the consideration in the first place. If you happen to end up with open space, I'll totally be in on the rush to reapply.

I have a feeling I lost the race due to a bit of a "bare bones" approach to my character. I usually do an "in character" introduction, leaving personality up to being portrayed through gameplay. The structure of the application was rather hard to wrap my head around.

All the same id like to get imput. Thanks

Ps. also curious how the "fey group" "picked itself"...only three fey in there, two of them gnomes.

Congratulations to those selected.

Honestly, given the extensive list of applicants and quality of content, I long suspected my odds were dim. I would welcome any critique to help strengthen my future submissions, however. Relatively new to the pbp arena, so I'll not be surprised if I overlooked some simple blunders.

to DM VoV, no worries thansk for the feedback.

As one of five druids I also knew my chances were slim, but since everyone else is doing it, what turned you off to Hinrik? Was it the somewhat contrived backstory? Or the poor attempt at alliterative verse?

Anthony Krast: - if you take a look at the first post of the discussion thread you'll see a brief monologue on how I went about picking the fey group.

Thorolf: - I thought that making him into a calm Gorumite was a little bit of a shame, I would have preferred seeing some rage and imbalance in there. Plus with the backstory I would have thought he'd be more engaged with chasing down Turlach than otherwise.

Kagehiro: - I liked your application alot and was this close to having you in the group. The only downside I saw was the Charisma dump - as even knocking back your Strength to 19 would have gone a long way to flattening that out. But that didn't lead me to putting you to one side.
In the end... you lost the coin flip. I had yourself and the Barbarian ultimately chosen and couldn't distinguish between the two - so I let fate decide.

DM Jelani: - as with Rannveig you were one of the characters on the table for the final spot in the Ulfen group. In the end I whittled it down to yourself and the Bear-ish Druid that I ultimately went with. After pondering on it for a while I decided to go with a Bear angle rather than a Wolf angle - predominately from a story side rather than the application side.
So there was nothing wrong with your application and it was well detailed and reasoned.

General Note:
Reading through these feedback posts you'll probably notice how many of the exclusions are on fairly flimsy or subjective reasons... and that is true. Especially so for this PbP when there were so many good submissions and great detail in backstory and flavour. So nobody should be disheartened or think themselves a failure for not making it past the post.

The immortal breakup words It's not you, it's me hold some truth here.
