You saw a big flash of light in the sleet where the spell went off. So you know the direction, but not the precise distance, where the spell landed.

Kargas Will: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17
Blood beads off her skin and drips to the ground as she weaves her spell. The magic settles on Kargas' mind.
An affected target must attempt a Fortitude save each round at the beginning of its turn. The first time it fails the Fortitude save, it is staggered until the next time it attempts a save against the spell. If the target fails a second Fortitude save in a row, it falls unconscious for the spell’s remaining duration. The target breathes normally while unconscious, but is shaken for 1 minute upon awakening. If the target succeeds at two Fortitude saves in a row, it shakes off the spell’s effects entirely.
The DC of this Fortitude save is 20.

Kargas, empowered by magic and his bloodline, lays into the floating orb of fire. He strikes the exact core, cleaving right through something hard that cracks loudly as his swing continues. Then, his second attack lands exactly upon the same spot once more, breaking through the core of Malvia's strange fiery form.
She unleashes a dreadful, echoing wail as her flame twist and sputter. An arm, leg, and a portion of bloody head reform, but as he magics begin to fail her, her transformation halts mid way. She rattles "Daughter, you... deserve..." but isn't able to finish the thought.
With a final fountain of burning blood, the remains of Malvia tumble out of the sky and scatter across the icy mountainside.

Astrid fixates on the sight of Malvia's burning remains falling to earth, and storms after them. Once she finds her hag mother's bloody, severed head, she stares at it for several seconds, before slamming the point of her longspear through it with all her strength. She pulls the weapon back, with the head impaled on it, then with an incoherent cry of rage swings the weapon about in a wide arc that sends the head flying off into the mountainside.
"I am not your daughter!" she screams, before collapsing to her knees in a fit of hysterical laughter, which shift into sobs by the time Guinness approaches her. Astrid looks up at him, before quickly glancing away.
"I had a mother, a long time ago," she tells him, almost whispering. "Her name was Lusia. That creature stole her from me. She took my mother, my father, and my sister. She stole the life I could have had if not for her."
"I've spent every day since either running from her or hunting her, thinking every day about what I'd do and what I'd say. She seemed just as obsessed with me." She pauses to wipe at her face, then barks out a bitter laugh. "But Kargas, he just cut her in half. She never saw him coming. Isn't that funny?"

"But Kargas, he just cut her in half. She never saw him coming. Isn't that funny?"
For a long moment the half-orc considers the question seriously. "No," he decides. "I did not know of your history, and I'm sorry for stealing a death that rightfully should have been yours. Are you--are you alright to press on with us?"
GM Cellion |
While Kargas and Astrid talk (and don't let me cut you off :>), Kellek inspects the remains and manages to recover several magic items glowing with significant auras. Astrid shakes her head at Kargas's apology.
"You didn't take anything from me, other than the burden of being tied to that monster. Besides," she says, favoring the half-orc with a half-smile, "it's not like you did it all by yourself."
She takes a deep breath and holds it for a moment before climbing to her feet.
"I didn't lie to you, but I wasn't honest, either. You still freed me all the same. If you'll still have me, then helping you complete your own quest is certainly the least I can do. Any evil that could command Malvia's loyalty, fickle as it was, is one that cannot be allowed to continue."
GM Cellion |
So, Kellek is setting up a magical shelter. Are you guys planning to rest now or push on a bit longer?
Kellek Zaderan |
Yes! ;)
Brother_Guiness |
”I am ready to continue taking the fight to the ogres, though a rest could be beneficial. I defer to those with depleted spellcasting reserves for the decision,” says Guiness, although he is happy to get out of the weather into the magical protection of Kellek’s spell.
Perception: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (4) + 13 = 17
Noticing the mage’s complexion, Guiness says, ”Kellek, you don’t look well. Perhaps you should have our healer check you out to be sure you are not afflicted by something from our last combat.”
Kellek Zaderan |
Kellek looks amazed.
"We have a healer?" He casts his gaze about. "And here I had thought we lost Floredana back at the Turtleback Ferry."
Kargas Stormscar |
I'd prefer to press on, I think the odds of being attacked while we rest are quite high. But I'm not bothered if others prefer to rest.
Kargas scowls darkly at the flippant mention of Floredana, but shoves the feeling down as he enters. "Quit whining, wizard, monster bites build character." Kargas ducks into the magic hut, then does a double-take. "Oh. Yeah, Guiness is right, you look worse than usual. Astrid?"
Kellek Zaderan |
I guess Kellek finishes his spell, sets the unseen servant to cooking dinner and begins looking over the spoils at his desk? It takes 10 minutes to casts so--um--uh???
Kellek is ill, injured, and out of a good number of spells and assumes others are in a similar state.
Astrid Olvirsdottir |
"He's right," Astrid says, waving off Kargas's defense. "I was so fixated on the hags I neglected my duties." She gestures to the seat at Kellek's writing desk and waits for him to sit.
"If you do not object, I have some folk remedies passed down to me by my parents that may help you. I will ask for Pulura's aid tomorrow if more direct intervention is necessary."
Heal to treat disease: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (18) + 6 = 24 If that beats the DC, you'll have a +4 competence bonus on your next save against it. Either way, I'll prepare remove disease tomorrow.
GM Cellion |
Resting it is.
1d6 ⇒ 1
With the secure shelter placed well away from the entrance to the ogre stronghold, you aren't disturbed during your long and hard earned rest. If the ogres are out looking for the adventurers that cut down a dozen of their comrades, their search doesn't take them near your hut. The only sounds that accompany you in the night are the steady drumming of sleet against the roof and the occasional animal snuffling against the warmth of the building.
Kellek awakes the next morning feverish and covered in foul black boils. (He takes an additional 1 con damage)
Otherwise, you're free to prepare for the day ahead.
Kellek Zaderan |
In his troubled sleep Kellek verbally despairs at the state of healthcare in his party and the power of something called the 'insurance industry' and its ability to block meaningful change in the way healing magic is allocated.
Colvyn "Slick" Dashtail |
Getting up refresh and ready to go, Colvyn steps outside the shelter and looks around for any possible dangers. Once he is convinced that there is nothing to worry about, he steps back into it. "Coast is clear, shall we get back to hunting ogres?"
Astrid Olvirsdottir |
In the morning, when it's clear that Kellek's condition is not improving, Astrid spends some time praying for more direct intervention from Pulura on the wizard's behalf.
Remove Disease: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (20) + 9 = 29 I'm going to assume that probably beats the DC!
Lesser Restoration: 1d4 ⇒ 4 Con damage removed
Her faith is well rewarded, fortunately, as the boils retreat from the divine energies. Another spell heals the other damage done to the man's body, completely restoring his health.
Remove disease and lesser restoration to the rescue.
GM Cellion |
Astrid's magic lifts the demonic fever from Kellek's body and then heals all of the disease's lingering effects!
Outside, Colvyn finds the storm of sleet has finally abated. Dark clouds hang low in the sky, rolling across the landscape, but the worst of the storm seems to have passed with the deaths of the four hags. A layer of ice crunches underfoot as he scouts out for any dangers. Although there are some large boot tracks that pass within a few hundred feet of the shelter, he doesn't encounter anything dangerous.
I'll assume you're heading right back.
With the way clear, you're able to return to the open mouth of the clanhold. Hanging from the massive bones that frame the entrance are half a dozen dead ogres, their bodies showing clear signs of having been beaten prior to receiving a killing stroke across their neck. Blood, no longer fresh, pools beneath them.
Other than the grisly display, the entrance is devoid of any guards.
Kargas Stormscar |
"Hmm, saved us the trouble." Kargas steps around the pooled blood, expression grim. Carefully scanning the entrance, he speaks to the others without looking back at them. "The caves ran left and right, left seemed to be the ogres' barracks. Should we clear out whoever's left there and then say hello to whatever's in charge?"
Perception: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (5) + 12 = 17

Before Guiness can answer, Colvyn continues down the cave and looks at the left tunnel. "Let's go see there is anything of interest." He heads down the tunnel.
Perception: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (13) + 17 = 30

Forgot to specify this but I'll also cast pass without trace and hunter's blessing on everyone. Just like last time, it'll target Humanoid (Giant) and Mountain terrain. Also, I prepared ashen path for the next time somebody drops a sudden snowstorm on us.
Astrid hangs back, but looks up in surprise as Muninn, riding on her shoulder, lets out a sudden burst of short croaks.
"I think," she stammers, bewildered, "I think he was laughing at your joke, Colvyn."
GM Cellion |
Sorry for the delay all!
While Kargas listens and looks for trouble, and doesn't note any incoming, Guiness struggles to make heads or tails of the state of the corpses. By his best guess, they were probably killed by blunt trauma and then only after death were their necks sliced, but he's not really sure.
With Astrid's magic honing your senses, you forge right back into the clanhold. Colvyn leads the way back through the areas you'd already explored, which you find devoid of any ogres or other defenders. You take the southern branch from the main intersection.
The massive cavern at the bottom of the steps stretches at least 100 feet across, and its high domed ceiling is stained dark with soot. Black pits serving as primitive forges dot the room, their insides filled with charcoal and soot, though a few still glow dimly with dying embers. Anvils loom throughout the cavern, each one as tall as one of you. But the ring of steel on steel that you would expect from a blacksmith's workplace is entirely absent. It looks very much like this place has been cleared out, and fairly recently too.
You note that around the perimeter of the room are at least two dozen large bedrolls. The few giant-sized metal hooks and blades that remain in this room are clearly rejects, of poor enough quality that they wouldn't be of much use in a fight.
While you're exploring this chamber, Colvyn overhears distant, echoing words in giant from somewhere to the north. "Find- and... then-" It sounds like someone isn't happy.
Kellek Zaderan |
Still feeling a bit anemic after losing so much blood the day before Kellek soldiers on.
"Well Colvyn, do you hear anything?"

Bumping in case folks missed the update last Friday.
Kargas Stormscar |
After a quick sweep of the southern caverns, Kargas shrugs. "No ogres here, so we should head north. My money's on whoever executed those poor bastards lives that way." Pausing at the exit of the crude forge, the half-orc begins casting.
I'd like to add Shield and Mirror Image to myself.
