His sword, glowing slightly with arcane energy, comes slashing down through the zombie's torso. I think. I don't recall zombies having a great AC

Colvyn "Slick" Dashtail |

Seeing Cade getting surrounded by the undead, Colvyn pulls back the string of his bow and lets fly an arrow. It quickly flies between rig and Kargas and hit the base of the skull on the skeleton. Because of the fight in front of him, Colvyn is unsure of what damage he caused.
Not sure how all the penalties stack here. So I did -4 for cover and -4 for melee. If he can't see that skeleton, Then he will fire at anything else he can see, taking a 5 ft side step if needed.
1d20 + 7 + 1 - 4 - 4 ⇒ (18) + 7 + 1 - 4 - 4 = 18
Damage: 1d6 + 1 + 1 + 1d6 ⇒ (2) + 1 + 1 + (4) = 8 That's at least 4 point of Holy damage!

Floredana Mandulescu |

"THE UNDEAD IN OUR CRYPTS?!" Flo exclaims, almost screaming, in disgust at finding such an abomination in what is effectively her backyard. She sends a flurry of butterflies to aid Kargas. How can this be? We tend this place daily! What is the meaning of this?

You resolved the attack correctly... Cade hasn't resolved his dodging panache ability yet so it is possible that the 5' he will move will take him out of melee with the skeleton, in which case one of the -4 penalties would not apply... but you hit either way.
FYI though the touch of good ability works like a weapon with the holy or bane weapon property. It doesn't do a sort of holy "energy" damage - it simply adds to the damage done by the by the original weapon and is of the same type. This is still enough to do some piercing damage.
How can this be? We tend this place daily! What is the meaning of this?
Nobody from the cathedral enters the crypt on a regular basis. It is normally kept locked. Every few weeks it is opened to change the flowers and sweep up the dust.
I haven't actually gone yet, why wouldn't I still have Luck?
Because the bit of luck expires on her turn.

Rig's slash cuts deep into the zombie's flesh. A horrible stench ensues as black ooze pours out of the wound.
Colvyn shoots the far skeleton and chips of bone fly. The skeleton reels for a moment.
Floredana gives Kargas another bit of luck.
BTW guys if you know things about the creatures that other party members don't know, it would be good to speak up about it.
Floredana: remember if you choose to channel energy, you roll the saves for the monsters just like it was a spell.

Laurana Kanan |

Hearing the sounds of fighting, Laurana moved to where she could get a better look. Through the sparse spaces she saw glimpses of the undead. Rig and Kargas seemed to have the first one in hand so she concentrated on the next she could see. Summoning the primal forces she pointed at the skeleton and a point of light leapt from her finger, growing as it unerringly moved toward the target.
I assume the skeleton does not have total concealment or cover

You can see both skeletons from where you are and either is a valid target for your spell. Since it is normally best practice to bring down injured creatures first instead of distributing damage among the creatures, I'll assume you are shooting at RED who has already been hit by Colvyn.
Laurana's magic bolt flies true, and strikes the skeleton at the base of the neck. The skeleton collapses in a heap of dusty bones onto the floor.
The remaining skeleton advances on Rig. It attacks twice, but Rig evades both strikes.

"The fleshy thing is a zombie...and they do not seem to mind me poking them at all."
Kargas feels his skin crawl as he looks upon the walking dead...this was wrong, dark spirits were at work, but he wouldn't show his fear to the others. Forcing a grin that looks more like a grimace, he barks back at Cade, "Sure, but you're little. They'll care when I hit them!"

Sorry. I assumed that I could not crit it since it was undead.
In D&D 3.5 you could not crit undead but in Pathfinder you can. Undead still have "vulnerable spots." Off the top of my head the only creatures you cannot crit in Pathfinder are oozes, elementals, swarms, and incorporeal creatures (though you can crit incorporeals with ghost touch weapons). Basically anything that is formless.
The zombie swings at Cade with its fist, but Cade easily ducks under the blow.

Also remember there is a house rule in effect that you can always use DEX for to-hit when making a touch attack.

Combat over.
Once the battle is over, the group is able to examine the crypt.
The most noteworthy thing is that the sarcophagus is open. The lid has been thrown to one side and lies broken on the floor. The sarcophagus is empty; there are no remains within. None of the undead resemble a properly buried body.
In the corner of the room is a shabby brown robe. Analyzing it with detect magic reveals that it has a faint aura, as if it was once magical but is no longer.
The only treasure here is the armor and weapons the skeletons were using. They are two chain shirts and two scimitars, all with the broken condition. They could be repaired with a mending orison and a bit of time.

Laurana Kanan |

Laurana inspects the remnants of the robe, "This was once a magic item used to create undead." she points to the remnants at their feet. "I dont know if former occupier of this crypt is one of them."

Kargas looks around, grinning at their victory over the dark spirits even as he starts to notice the slash across his ribs from a moment ago. "Flor, could you close this up for me? I don't trust that there wasn't rust or rotting flesh on that blade, infection is no fit way for a warrior to die. Also don't wanna muss up the spirit-script!"
Looking around the little crypt, "Somebody really did a number on this place. Prolly used the goblins as a distraction to get in here, clever. Unless...nah, who would team up with goblins? They'd blab about it first chance they got, no one would be that dumb. Right?"

Floredana Mandulescu |

"Of course Kargas. You need to be more careful! One day you're going to get hit by something with a little more omph than a skeleton!" Yet despite her badgering, her hand glows white and she closes his wounds.
CLW, Kargas: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 7
Goblins are hard to corral, but if you can somehow inspire them to follow you, it would be quite the force to be reckoned with... "Kargas, I pray that this is the work of an opportunist independent of the goblin raid," she says, folding her arms.
"We need to tell Father Zantus. It is clear that a corpse was stolen, but for what purpose? I admit that I don't know much about the person laid to rest here. Who he was may help us answer that question. Then we should get back to the Garrison..."

Colvyn puts his bow away and looks at Kargas. "Maybe you should get a shield or a better arm." With that, he walks out of the crypt and look at the ground again. "Before the fight, I saw about half a dozen different foot prints on the ground here. They were mostly left by goblins. However, one set of tracks seems like they were left by a human. An ally or leader of the goblins maybe?" He tries to find more of the prints a bit further of the crypt, trying to see where they got in and out of the graveyard.

Kargas Stormscar |
2 people marked this as a favorite. |

Kargas makes a face at Colvyn's retreating back. "Says the mouse hiding behind the swordsmen."

Rig Veda |

Rig snickers at Kargas' comment, covering up his mouth politely.
"CAN anyone team up with goblins? Seems like more trouble than it's worth. I grant they would make a good distraction. Would something like a hobgoblin leave human looking tracks?"
He pops his knuckles and rolls out his shoulders. "I think I'd like to have a little chat with our captive friend." He gives a wicked smile and a gleam of light dances across his eyes.
Rig ponders for a moment. "Whoever was in the crypt must have been important for them to take the whole body, unless they animated it, I guess. If we assume, for the moment, that the corpse wasn't buried in a full suit of magical armor... is there some sort of spell that would require a whole corpse (aside from the reanimating ones)?"

Colvyn "Slick" Dashtail |

"No, a hobgoblin would leave a different set of tracks. The average hobgoblin is usually smaller but heavier than a human. So they have a shorter stride, but a deeper footprint. What I see here doesn't fit with what a hobgoblin would leave." Colvin looks up from the ground and toward the edge of the graveyard. "If I can find where they got in here, maybe I could find more clues."
"Oh, before we move on, we should grab the chain shirts and scimitars. I might have spell to repair them tomorrow."
Maybe you should get a shield or a better arm (this should say armor and not just arm.)

Kargas Stormscar |

It's all good, just giving you a hard time. I'm already wearing a chain shirt and can't use a shield with a 2-handed weapon

Cade Goodbarrel |

Looking up at Kargas as he slams his weapon into the zombie.
Do you plan to leave me some fun....
Cade slips under the bumbling zombie and starts to stab at it as Colvyn's arrow connects with the undead.
ah Come on!...In the middle of my back swing! Damn good shot though. Thanks.
Cade smiles at Colvyn and steps over the zombie. He sheaths his weapons and starts to walk to the middle of the crypt.
He hears the exchange between Kargas and Colvyn
Maybe you should get a shield or a better arm.
or maybe you could move around a bit more...you know, dance up a jig or something.
Cade bright smile is there for all to see.Says the mouse hiding behind the swordsmen
Still smiling
Come now Kargas, everyone has there own way of fighting. Jerry might not like to be on the front lines but he sure as heck is darn good with that bow of his. I for one am glad to have him around. What you call hiding behind someone, I call stop walking in front of me then.He laughs at his own humor...
Yes this is serious, sorry.
Cade clears his throat and continues to smile.
Who can we see about the person that...was laid to rest here.

Rune GM |

Laurana inspects the remnants of the robe, "This was once a magic item used to create undead." she points to the remnants at their feet. "I dont know if former occupier of this crypt is one of them."
Sorry if I wasn't clear, but the robe of bones has patches that turn into undead creatures when torn off. It doesn't animate other corpses. So you are certain that none of the undead you slew were the resident of the sarcophagus. His remains must be elsewhere.
He tries to find more of the prints a bit further of the crypt, trying to see where they got in and out of the graveyard.
Colvyn explores around the outside of the crypt. He finds a number of goblin footprints, and is able to determine that the goblins seem to have scaled the town wall, which is only a short way east of the crypt. In fact, there are a lot more goblin footprints than just the ones at the crypt, and this seems to have been a main point of entry for the goblin raid.
The human footprints seem to return to the wall, but most of the goblin prints do not.
"...is there some sort of spell that would require a whole corpse (aside from the reanimating ones)?"

Kargas Stormscar |

Kargas lets out an involuntary sigh of relief as he exits the tomb, a few of the undead's bits of armor & weapons in tow. "Well, I guess we're guards now, so probably we should find out who this 'Ezakien Tobyn' was and why anyone would care enough to break into his crypt." He looks expectantly at Flor and Laurana, who seem to be smarter than him at this sort of thing.
How tall is the town wall?
Glancing up at the top of the wall after Colvyn's discovery, he eyes the ratfolk and then wall, assessing how climbable it looks. "We should follow those tracks as far as we can, while they're mostly fresh. Colvyn has a good eye."

Laurana Kanan |

Laurana thinks on the question about bodies and spells, and draws a blank, "Beyond animate dead, I cant think of anything that would require the whole body. Perhaps the grave robbers wanted to send a message the Sandpoint. After all, Tobyn was quite revered here for some." This new puzzle both intrigued and perplexed her.

Colvyn "Slick" Dashtail |

It's all good, just giving you a hard time. I'm already wearing a chain shirt and can't use a shield with a 2-handed weapon
That was Colvyn trying to say that we shield invest in better protective gear for you. With a 7 of Cha, sometimes he doesn't say the things like he want to say.
Following the tracks to the wall, Colvyn looks up. "Most of the goblin tracks are one way... Probably because we killed them. But the human track head back over the wall." Studying the wall again, Colvyn turn back to Kargas. "Hey big guy, give me a boost?" After passing over the wall, Colvyn tries to find the tracks again.
Survival tracking: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19

Rig Veda |

"Maybe we should make sure that there's a guard placed over here if this is where they came in. We might ask the guard captain if there's a way to fortify the wall here as well."

Floredana Mandulescu |

"Good thinking Rig. Father Zantus should be able to tell us more about Ezakien Tobyn," Flo says eager to unravel more of this mystery.
________
We can take a quick peak over the wall, talk to Father Zantus on our way out, and then talk to the guards again. Sound like a plan? If we have time, we could even go beyond the walls a little afterwards!

Kargas Stormscar |

Kargas makes a stirrup with his hands, and only grunts a little as he heaves the ratfolk up the wall.

Rune GM |

How tall is the town wall?
About 15 feet. It looks to be about 5 feet thick. There's no wall-walk along the top at this part.
"...After all, Tobyn was quite revered here for some."
After passing over the wall, Colvyn tries to find the tracks again.
With some struggling and some help from Kargas, Colvyn is able to get to the top of the wall. It is wide enough to walk on for him (it's about 3' wide at the top). Colvyn can see the goblin tracks on the other side of the wall, and can barely make out the tracks of the human figure leading away. The trees of the forest on the other side are pretty close to the wall; some of the branches even overhang.
So right now do you want to:
* Follow the tracks that Colvyn has found?
* Go and speak to Father Zantus?
* Go to the garrison and interrogate the goblins?
* Go and speak to Brodert Quink?
* Something else?
You probably want to do a lot of these things but which would you do first? Also, are you sticking together or splitting up?

Rune GM |

Kargas, Cade, and Colvyn head off through the forest to follow tracks.
That's going to take several hours so I'll put off resolving that for a bit.
Floredana, Laurana, and Rig return to the cathedral to report to Father Zantus.
The cathedral is still busy, many people having sought shelter there the night before, and others who were wounded the previous night are recovering from their injuries. The group manages to pin down Father Zantus to give him the news. As they describe the situation a look of horror dawns on his face.

Father Zantus NPC |

Faher Zantus sits down on a pew, holding his head in his hands. He is deeply shaken.
"Undead in Father Tobyn's crypt? Sweet Desna, who would do such a thing? Especially to him..."
If you have specific questions go ahead and ask them. Otherwise after a bit of RP we can get on to the garrison and the goblin prisoners.

Laurana Kanan |

"Father, do you have any idea who might have had a grudge against Father Tobyn? Any enemies?" Laurana carefully began the questioning.

Floredana Mandulescu |

Flo's face shares a similar look to Father Zantus. "Is there anything we can do to prevent this from happening again?" She paces a little as the conversation continues.

Father Zantus NPC |

"Father, do you have any idea who might have had a grudge against Father Tobyn? Any enemies?"
"Gods, no! Father Tobyn was a pillar of the community. He inspired us all. I suppose there are always those who do not live up to the standards of a priest, of course. He spoke against the practices of the Sczarni from time to time, but none of them would dare touch him."
Flo's face shares a similar look to Father Zantus. "Is there anything we can do to prevent this from happening again?" She paces a little as the conversation continues.
"We must install a better door. Yes, with a sturdy... but of course, there is no point if we don't recover his remains. Is there? What point is there in locking an empty tomb?"

Floredana Mandulescu |

"We have friends looking for the remains right now! In the mean time, I think it would be prudent to make sure all the other tombs are safe," Flo suggests.
It takes a moment for his words to sink in. "Sczarni? They are like a gang or something, right? Could they have been behind all of this?!"

Father Zantus NPC |

" think it would be prudent to make sure all the other tombs are safe," Flo suggests.
Father Zantus nods, lost in thought. "Yes, that's a very good idea."
"Sczarni? They are like a gang or something, right?"
Father Zantus at first does not seem to hear at first, but then looks up and smiles wanly. "The Sczarni... Chelaxians often think of us Varisians as a bunch of con artists and petty thieves. But it is a small minority that give us that reputation. The Sczarni... no, more than a gang. And yet less, also."
He shakes his head.
"I'm sorry... that doesn't make much sense, does it?"
"You'll find Sczarni almost anywhere there are Varisians. It is easy for Varisians to think of Chelaxians and others as outsiders, or foreigners. And so they end up deciding that petty crimes against these foreigners are permissible. The Sczarni do form into gangs in larger cities and they can get violent. But they have never been a big problem here."
"I'm not saying they're not here. Oh no, there's definitely a Sczarni group in town. But you don't hear about muggings and murders here, not like in Magnimar."
"Most Varisians have little to do with them. On the other hand, most Varisians wouldn't turn a Sczarni over to the law either."
"I'm sure Constable Hemlock could tell you more. He tries to put a dent into their operations."

Laurana Kanan |

Laurna could feel that the Father did not have more to say on the matter and was trying to get on to other things. "Thank you father, I think we may want to shelve a Sczarni investigation for now and focus on the goblins and why they are stealing the dead. I cant imagine the Sczarni colluding with goblins. Then again Chelaxians collude with worse. In any case, we will let you get back to your business and we will ask around."
Laurana had not had time to discuss the events of yesterday with Master Quink.

Floredana Mandulescu |

With Laurana exiting the conversation, Flo had no choice but to do the same. "Thank you for your time Father Zantus! We will let you know if anything else comes up!"
She follows Laurana out the door to where Rig was hopefully still waiting for them. Let's hope this goblin proves to be a font of information, it would be horrible if something like yesterday were to happen again! "Ready to go to the Garrison?" she asks her partners with a warm smile.

Laurana Kanan |

"I think there are several more leads. Master Quink has a depth of knowledge of this area." She nibbles her lip a moment and brushes a few stray strands of hair from her face. "But the garrison might be helpful."
