Alia of the Blade
My mistake, for some reason I thought it tried to engulf by moving into my square and the reflex save makes me end up next to it but not engulfed. Regardless, if I need to actually step AWAY from it, out of melee range, then I would probably have readied an action to attack it, so I guess it's all the same...except as part of the readied action I can take a 5-foot step, meaning I can get a bit further away towards the portcullis. Yay deadends.

It's not clear from your description if I can actually see the creature, but I am assuming I can.

His eyes turn black and he spits a glob of something that shoots towards the creature.
Casting acid splash. Creature is in melee with my allies and has cover, so I have a -8 to hit. But it is a touch attack at least.

Just checked the party loot page and we have 12 acid flasks there, so I assume everyone has two.
Alia of the Blade
"Hold that, they are mindless and acid-based. Just because you hit does not mean it inconvenienced the creature!", Alia shouts in response.
Zokon already said so, but I guess it won't hurt mentioning again. Acid would not be my first choice against acidic creatures. Do we have Alchemists Fires, too?
Numalar Auritonius
|
That was my first thought too, and I didn't expect to do any damage (though Numalar wouldn't have necessarily known that). But I managed to deal 3 points of damage with my acid splash (see quote below). So unless only magical acid works, acid flasks should work too.

I know, but HP are an abstract concept. Do you get some feedback from your spell that TELLS you you did damage? I caught that it actually worked in the listing, too, but isn't that meta-knowledge? I guess one could argue "fight fire with fire", but I'd still prefer an alternative - oh well, I guess thinking like that will get me cornered against a portcullis and paralyzed in one of the cubes, but I can't help it -_- sorry if I'm obnoxious again
RPGGGM
Numalar's spittle hits though traffic, Boiling on the thing's surface.
I really, really hate auto-correct.... Generally speaking, unless I'm lying and you are fighting an illusion or something that is trying fake you out via bluff, you can assume that if damage is mentioned in the descriptive text or below that in the initiative cart that it is real--or as real as abstract damage against imaginary creatures can get. One could rightly assume that the big gloopy thing shuddered or recoiled or both as it sizzled under Numalar's spittle which much like mom spit cleans almost anything does good job of straightening your hair. I tried to make that clear above but modern technology thwarted me. Like when I try to type 'sans' and my phone always wants to add the '-serif'....
Alia of the Blade
Aye, modern technology...boiling would have provided visual feedback as to the effect. Soiling it's surface...not so much ;) I figured with them being mindless creatures, they don't really have a concept of "pain" or "damage", being rather reactive in nature and "fighting" to the death. I figured a "-3" on the running tally is not enough of a hint to assume the attack modus is working, but the fixed descriptive text adds just that. Again, apologies for being that way...several of my home groups have a nasty habit of metagaming, so it's a rather serious pet peeve of mine to keep player knowledge and character knowledge separate. Sometimes I may be too...motivated when trying to make sure it is so.

But Alia could hardly do that if she herself was to be engulfed in one of these creatures. After her assault, she takes a step back, preparing to spellstrike next round if any idea came to her mind. No crits possible. It's hard to find a weak spot on a 3D, see-through rectangle.
But it is pretty hard to miss with with an attack, it being one of the few things that actually take up most of the volume it's fighting (flowing?) in.

GGGM: If I were to hit the ooze that Scarlet is trapped in with burning hands, would Scarlet take full damage? Or would she get some protection being within the ooze?
Reformulate that question to inquire about any types of damage against her ooze. While I could see burning hands(or similar spells) affecting the surface, what about stabbing(/shooting, clawing...) it? Can we aim in a way that does not harm Scarlet? Does that incur a penalty? Or are they large enough that it's not a problem attacking a spot that is not containing my bodyguard?
RPGGGM
There really isn't a good set of solid rules for engulf. I'm going to treat this particular version of it as 'swallow whole'. In that Scarlet is inside the thing's gullet and has protection from most attacks. When the thing moves or attacks you can see its outline well enough not to have to make the perception check to see where it is and hit around her. However since the thing is just wobbly jello, an area attack that overkills it will spill over from it to it's contents. Likewise if Scarlet wrestles her way back to 'grappled' (rather than 'pinned') she will be exposed enough to be hit by a area attack as well.
Luna moves pouncing through the fray trying to find an opening but between the distance covered, the additional threat posed by the second ooze, and their uncanny sense of the area around them nearest one flows forward into the cat's path engulfing her mid-jump with a wobbly BOING sound. AoO

"Anyone behind me needs to move as this thing is coming straight for us"
In case you have forgotten, you can move through the space of a friendly creature. So you could have leapfrogged back behind Celyne or Posh if you want. I was kind of hoping you would do that so I could open up with burning hands, since I'll get more than just your eyebrows if you are in the way. I'll hit both jellies if I do it now.
Numalar will delay until after Celyne. Whatever I do, I will fall back after doing it.
"Posh! Can you create some dancing lights?"
I am assuming mine have burned out.
Alia of the Blade
To be fair, light was one reason I did NOT step back diagonally. Both jellys should still be bathed in normal light conditions, with dim light reflecting down the corridors.
Celyne
"Luna! No!!! Oh, poor baby!" Luna says, just as she finishes casting her spell, an eagle appears to attack the most injured of the cubes, as much as she'd rather attack the one Luna is in, she knows concentration of damage is more effective and everyone will help Luna if the other one goes down. She places it behind the cube opposite Zokon.

"Luna! No!!! Oh, poor baby!"
Oh sure, Scarlet gets eaten during round 1, shurg and move on. But if Luna gets scratched...Well, it is just another day for Scarlet.
Scarlet feels more of the acid burn her and feels some sensation on her fingertips. Alia! Damn, she's stuck too.
Celyne
Celyne didn't send Scarlet in to attack the thing... she's just feeling guilty.
RPGGGM
Still, any time Luna hideously mauls someone to death and presents the remains to you it's all "Aww, that's so cute!" but whenever Scarlet does the same it's all "That's sick! Get that thing away from me! What's wrong with you?" Scarlet, if I were you I would stop leaving gifts like that at the foot of her bedroll for Celyne to find in the morning and turn your attention elsewhere--Numalar perhaps.
RPGGGM
...as she finishes casting her spell, an eagle appears to attack the most injured of the cubes, as much as she'd rather attack the one Luna is in....
The most damaged one would be the one Luna is in. However line of sight dictates that if you do summon something and place the creature to attack that cube, the cube gets some cover from the wall corner the animal has to attack around. So did you want to attack that one or the one Scarlet is in facing Zokon? I mean Alia's probably got the wounded one. Look how steady the light is that's coming from around that corner. That woman's a rock when faced with danger!
Celyne
we'll go for the one we have good los on then (Scarlett's), which should have flanking with zokon, right?

Well Zokon would step 5ft back then if possible after he has attacked
It wouldn't have been possible for you to 5' step; there was no empty space within 5'. But you only took a standard action so you could have made a move to get behind either Posh or Celyne. You could also have acrobatics'ed to avoid an AoO from the jelly. I don't now if that would still be allowed though.

Posh listened to Numalar, casting Dancing Lights in the area to illuminate the place whilst attempting to maintain his performance.
