"Hm. It would seem our undead bear is also a spellcaster. If it has a chance to regenerate then we could be facing it at full strength again!"
Numalar looks at the lights hovering in the air, and with a wave sends them forward, leaving one behind to illuminate the cave mouth. He then rides Sir Didymus down and stops near Alia. He looks around.
Move action to direct the dancing lights and move action to move down to the lower area.
"See anything?"

Alia of the Blade |

Afraid the dancing lights can't spread out that far..."must stay within a 10-foot-radius area in relation to each other but otherwise move as you desire (no concentration required): forward or back, up or down, straight or turning corners, or the like. The lights can move up to 100 feet per round."...the good news is, you don't need concentration, the bad news, they will be very close to each other and can't illuminate a larger area. But Zokon's Sunrod will cover that.

![]() |

Ah, good catch. OK, will move those lights closer together. Might as well move them all forward then. Do you have your own light spell going?
Edit: Moved the lights to within a 10' radius of each other.

RPGGGM |

Celyne I'm not sure Scarlet's doing anything. Are you moving somewhere? Delaying?

The cave seems bare of bears, but the floor is more or less smooth and walls have obvious indentations carved into them for candles though they seem long disused. There are some rough murals as well in the alcoves, but they are all so covered in dust and dirt as to be unintelligible.

Zokon Santyev |

Zokon will stow his bow and draw his sword. He will advance forward into the cave and investigate.

"Maybe. It wasn't breathing - being undead would explain it, but that's not the only explanation. Construct perhaps? No... not very likely..."
Numalar looks around.
perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
Numalar calls back to the mouth of the cave.
"Zokon! Be careful! I can't see it here... check behind you!"

![]() |

GGGM: I noticed you put a light radius around the sunrod but not the dancing lights. Is that an oversight or is there some effect that is causing them to not shed as much light as normally? Dancing lights normally emit as much light as a torch or lantern. Sunrods normally shed "normal light" in a 30' radius (same as lanterns) and you have marked "dim light" instead, which makes me suspicious that some interesting spooky effect is darkening the area (and making me regret not having detect magic still going).

RPGGGM |

At the time I didn't have time is all. The sunrod increases local light by a step. Your lights work as normal.

![]() |

Disappointed that there aren't spooky light effects. :( But:
The sunrod increases local light by a step.
Is this a house rule? This is not normally how they work.
SUNROD
Price 2 gp; Weight 1 lb.
This 1-foot-long, gold-tipped iron rod glows brightly when struck (a standard action). It sheds normal light in a 30-foot radius and increases the light level by one step for an additional 30 feet beyond that area (darkness becomes dim light and dim light becomes normal light)...
The language for torches and lanterns is basically the same.
So if someone cast a darkness spell over the area it would cause the sunrod to only emit dim light.
Numalar has darkvision, so it's all the same to him, but most of the party doesn't.

Scarlet Scarab |

"So...it fled? It's not here?" Scarlet blows smoke out of her nose. "And the fight was just getting good, too..."
"If it's not inside, we stay dry. That was the point, right?"

RPGGGM |

Disappointed that there aren't spooky light effects. :( But:
** spoiler omitted **

Nevermind. Must have skipped to the end of the description. Both effects regular rules.
Busy, busy. More later.

Alia of the Blade |

Vision and Light covers it quite well. Dancing lights might resemble lanterns OR torchers, but they always shed as much light as a torch. As such, the Sunrod is a good upgrade at +10 feet for both normal light and dim light.
Alia will move forward, still holding her charge, looking around.
Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19

As a murder-hobo my suggestion is we go after it now and kill it! Kill it with fire! It's clearly a danger and possibly has some treasure for us to..."liberate" here. But also as a player, best to kill it as it's already a danger and we don't want it recovering.

Zokon Santyev |

"I do not like my chances of finding it in the rain, but if it comes back we can surround it and kill it, lets sleep in our armour all and wait for it... "

Alia of the Blade |

Alia frowns, hearing Zokon's words:"You saw it's wounds close. You want to wait a few minutes until it's all healthy again for it to come and attack again? Only to vanish again if it's wounded and come back another few minutes later? You'll run out of arrows at that rate."
We could gamble on the dimension hop being a once/day thing, but if it's at will, we are screwed by "waiting it out" unless we get a lucky crit in when it's about to port away.

Zokon Santyev |

"My swishy sword does not run out of ammunition. . And I'm not a ranger i have no wish to try tracking a teleporting bear in the rain"
He swishes his rapier.

Celyne |

Celyne follows... "Wait, Scarlet... if there were a fight with a crazed bear and horses, we'd have heard it by now, even in the rain. The sound of screaming horses is unmistakable. Let me heal some of your wounds before you try running off. Or at least just walk so I can heal you as we go."

![]() |

"It could be waiting here... but I can see the walls here, and no sign of the bear. Perhaps there is a hidden chamber?"
Numalar ambles forwards on Sir Didymus, looking around. He looks up at the ceiling, and down at the floor.
With a wave he sends the dancing lights moving across the various alcoves, trying to illuminate them further.
Perception: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
Will make the dancing lights move around the room, illuminating each shadowy area in turn, stopping if they illuminate the bear or anything else interesting. I put a yellow line on the map to indicate their approximate path, which is roughly 100' long. GGGM: I noticed you moved the lights to within a 5' radius of each other but I think I would prefer to have them have their maximum spread, which is a 10' radius. They are currently all 10' from a central point.
I have moved, so I will ready an action to... RUN! If the bear jumps out at me I will move back towards the rest of the party. Will use draconic defense if hit by a physical attack.

Alia of the Blade |

@horses: Still need to get our stuff/Naleksa into the shelter. And by the time we would hear horses being attacked, it would be a bit late. I'll simply make sure to fetch them and bring them into safety before the storm gets worse or the bear notices them...

Alia of the Blade |

If R5 is correct, then some of us already did our actions. @Celyne: You also have low-light vision. For both of us, Zokon's Sunrod already covered the whole area in regular light(60-feet radius), so actually no need to wait on Numalar's Dancing Lights :)

Numalar also has darkvision 60', so he can see the whole area. But others don't, and besides, I don't want to be the only one looking around.

Bleh, had a charge written out, but single action won't quite get me far enough. Also, I'm still holding a charge on the frostbite. That means I'm very limited in options.
Alia shouts to warn Posh: "Posh, it's behind you!", just as she breaks into a little sprint, hoping to circle around the bear for her attack, in case one of her friends was coming up to flank it.

![]() |

So much for the hidden chamber theory. I had thought I would continue looking as none of my perception rolls were very good...
"Curse it, my first guess was right! Back, Sir Didymus, onto the bridge!" Numalar and Sir Didymus charge back up the stairs into the rain. The dancing lights follow.
"By the Blade of Shindorlai, there's the beast! Posh, beware!"
Not a lot I can do with a single standard action, so as Sir Didymus moves I will try to activate produce flame. Don't think I have a shot with it from here though.
