"Umm.. shouldn't Scarlet go first into the depths, because she can see or are we going to use torches and have her visionarynessness as a bonus?.."
Zokon remembers his sunrod laying on the ground in the cave and goes and retrieves it

Alia of the Blade |

Also, just for protocol: Zokon, would you mind -10 feet on the standard marching order? With 65 feet ahead, if something jumps you on the surprise round, you are JUST out of reach of charge during the first normal round. With 55 feet ahead, any enemy without reach attacking you would be within charging distance. Or was there a reason this distance was choosen?
"Scarlet and me can take point, but I still need light. Hand me that Sunrod, then you can keep your bow at the ready", Alia suggests as the party forms up in front of the secret entrance.

Zokon Santyev |

Zokon does as Alia suggests and takes out his bow

Scarlet Scarab |

"Feelin' much better, thanks!" Scarlet blinks a few times, then gets her gear ready. "Let's see what's down there. We owe the old man that much, at least."

Poshment Underhill |

"Goodbye." Naleksa says. She smiles hopefully.

"Don't worry. We'll be back soon." Posh smiles towards Naleska before they continue on their way into the cave.

Alia of the Blade |

Alia, wielding the Sunrod, steps on the stairs, heading downstairs, Estoc in her other hand.

Alia cast the light about and looks in. She notes kobold foot prints in the dust at her feet and cobwebs drifting like tattered ships sails from the ceiling. She steps in. There's a click from one of the flagstones and a whoosh as all the cobwebs strain against a sudden gust of wind. Before anyone can react a pendulum blade the size of a greataxe sweeps out of southern wall at chest height. It grazes Alia and then snaps into a recess in the north wall.
It all happens so fast that Alia only notices the pain after she sees all the blood.

Alia of the Blade |

"Wha...UGH....", Alia stammers as she falls on her knee, dropping the sunrod to place a hand across her chest protectively...too late to help, but instincts are hard to overcome...for people not knowing her it may be all the more surprising that her grip on her Estoc actually got firmer.

"I'm not much of a religious type. My boss was-" Scarlet's reactions are too slow to see or stop the pendulum. "Alia! Watch it!"
"If this is a kobold lair...keep our eyes peeled for traps, I say." Scarlet draws her weapons and presses ahead once Alia is healed.

Ha! True
Zokon will put down his bow and move up to the trap area "Please step back all, lets try find this sucker and if I can't we'll get Celyne up here, there's not much she can't see."
Zokon will take back the Sunrod for this after which he will give it back to Alia, he will get up close to the floors and walls, to try find the trigger.

It seems like any pressure on the square of flagstones before the steps causes the blade to sweep out.

"Alright, if I can get around this, maybe I can jam it from the other side?" Scarlet prepares to leap down past the flagstone step.
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20

Because there is no place to get a running jump from the DC is 10 which you obviously beat.
Scarlet bounds to the first step down.

Alia of the Blade |

"There may be more traps...careful", Alia states while Celyne heals her.
She takes a moment to view the area the implement disappeared to(and came from), to see if it could be jammed(or deactivated) there, by holding a rock across or something of the sort.
Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27

Alia notes the space Zokon pointed out.
The blade would certainly kill Numalar's hat, but other than that the worst it could do to either of them would be to part their hair assuming they didn't hop through. The unrepentant gnome strides through... maybe doffs his hat.
Jamming the recess requires a disable device attempt to get it right.

Hey now, Posh is a perfectly upstanding person who'd never do something so underhanded...*grins*
Posh smiles at Alia's comment
"There are certainly manage advantages to us short people." he smiles as he looks back to Numalar. "Shall we leave somekind of marking to remind us of the trap on the way back?"

Alia of the Blade |

"Trust me, I won't forget it...", Alia replies, rubbing her chest, then picking up the sunrod again. "Thanks, Celyne...shall we move on?"

RPGGGM |

Crawling beneath the blade's reach while safer is perhaps the more disconcerting option for as one moves across the floor setting off a multitude of little pressure plates the blade arcs above like lightning made steel.
The stairwell is sheathed in curtains of cob-webbing with a small human child-sized hole in the web near the floor.
The stair lets out after about three or four turns on a narrow stone corridor all the more claustrophobia-inducing for your awareness of all the dirt and stone above.

North or west?

Celyne |

Celyne keeps her position in the back of the party with Luna, watching to make sure they aren't ambushed from behind, and lets the leaders decided the direction to go.

Zokon Santyev |

"Should I run out and buy some chalk off Naleksa?

Scarlet Scarab |

"Sweep along the right-hand-side wall? Easier to remember where we've been?", Alia suggests.
"Okay, right then. So that's... North!" Some of Scarlet's enthusiasm returns as she crawls through the tunnels.

![]() |

After crawling under the deadly scythe, Numalar mutters, "Bloody kobolds."
He stands up and brushes himself off. "Do we have some sort of long pole we can probe the ground ahead of us? That might allow us to set off any traps prematurely before we reach them."

RPGGGM |

Alia of the Blade wrote:"Sweep along the right-hand-side wall? Easier to remember where we've been?", Alia suggests."Okay, right then. So that's... North!" Some of Scarlet's enthusiasm returns as she crawls through the tunnels.
The ceilings here are the typical 10 ft. tall so no need to actually crawl unless you're worried about death-dealing pendulums that is.

Zokon Santyev |

Zokon will purchase the chalk and then run back, he'll make a mark with an arrow in the direction they are moving near the cave entrance

Alia of the Blade |

"Make the mark as high as you can reach, Zokon. We don't want some Kobold messing with them if we intend to rely on those.", Alia mentions, noticing the clean floors.
Not sure if a pole will help...with weight-triggered pressure plates you will get tired fast if you try to put enough force on every single stone...and if it's not a pressure plate, all the worse, I'd rather we keep our eyes open than depend on a gimmick. :)

Gimmick! The 10' pole has been a D&D standard since 1974! You do understand that we can keep our eyes open AND use the pole, right?
And we're not talking land mines here. The technology involved in one of these traps is unlikely to be able to allow triggering when a heavy weight is pressed down but not when a light one is. A 10' pole has considerable weight on it's own (8 lbs). That should be enough to trigger such a trap most of the time.
BTW Numalar already has chalk... but can't reach the high spots to make marks out of the reach of kobolds.

From the opposite alcove the air seems to shudder like heat off of brick. It advances forward toward Alia as if meaning to engulf her!
Alia you may take an AoO before your action or you can attempt a Reflex save DC 10 and be pushed back into that side hall next to Zokon.
One knowledge roll, reveal what you can.

Gimmick as in "a trick or device intended to attract attention, publicity, or trade.", not as in "something new and flashy". I know we can do both, but I think being too focused on floor plates will mean distraction from other dangers. As for the trigger weight, in my book there's a minimum weight to activate them so random wandering animals or vermin don't set them off. *shrug* used to different table variance, I'd assume.

As Alia falls back it all suddenly goes black for Scarlet--oh wait, that's just the light from the sunrod, and Scarlet can see in the dark. Carry on.
Swift to Arcane Empower Blade, Standard to attack, then 5-foot step away.
Alia When the thing goes to engulf you (on what is essentially the surprise round) Alia only has two options: attack with an AoO or Reflex save to get out of the way--sort of like an Overrun attempt. So the save happens and then from your new/current position from around the corner you can attack on your turn during round 1 (the thing does get some cover from the corner--just so you know, not that it mattered this time). You still have a full move action if you like.
Alia throws herself around the corner and aims a riposte at the thing but her attack misses due to the thing being slower than she thought, and nearly transparent.
