Alia of the Blade |
Alia slowly wakes up again as Celynes healing magic streams into her.
"No...don't...use fire....here...."
After a few dazed moments, she becomes more aware of her surroundings again, realizing what happened and seeing everybody else is more or less up on their feet..."Sorry for worrying you...I guess I stood too close to the center..."
Looking at Scarlet, Alia lifts her hand gently, then picks a dismembered Rat's Tail out of Scarlets hair, smiling: "At least those rats are worse off"

The sewer tunnels wind onward in a haphazard mix of old and new construction. The older bits are narrow and primarily water with foot-wide ledges to traverse, while most of the newer construction seems more like tunnel you just blew up. Many surface accessible intersections and manholes are blocked with garbage that frustrated Copper's residents have jammed in them over the past few weeks.
How would you like to proceed? And while we are at it....

"I wonder how many ratters we just blew up..." Alia muses as she takes a look at her surroundings. "Those older bits look like they'll force us to walk in a line, which will seriously hamper us if there's more hostile...things down here. I'd prefer to first take a look in the newer constructions, and keep my feet dry. Especially now that my boots are crispy warm..."

For the 20 you can have your choice of:
1. A lockable cherry-wood lap-desk, with vials of multicolored inks (5 vials total with space for 6), and 10 sheets of parchment.
or
2. A Taldan courtier's outfit made to resemble highly-stylized peasant's garb.

Appraise: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10 Well, thats a fail. I'm content to simply not know, if you want to throw some numbers my way, feel free, otherwise I'll just assume I have no clue what it's worth.(Pure interest question, I'd likely keep it anyway)
Scarlet Scarab |
Looking at Scarlet, Alia lifts her hand gently, then picks a dismembered Rat's Tail out of Scarlets hair, smiling: "At least those rats are worse off"
Scarlet first looks angry, then bursts into laughter. "Haha! Rats and me...we don't get along well. They'll put up a mean fight if you let 'em."

Numalar Auritonius |
Numalar coughs and sputters after being fed the potion, but he shakes his head and looks around, blinking.
"Well, that's one way to clean the slime off everyone's clothes. Heh. My jacket is quite toasty now."
Numalar looks around as the smoke clears.
Perception: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7
"Well, everything looks clear now. Celyne, perhaps you can heal Scarlet; it looks like she can barely stand."
everyone should be conscious now... who looks REALLY bad? I have 3 more spells for the day.
Scarlet is at 0. Posh should be at 3 so he is the second worst off, tied with you. Numalar is now at 5 out of 7 so he's okay. Zokon and Alia are both at 6.
"I hate to fall back at the first setback, but we are quite banged up. I am willing to proceed but if others disagree then perhaps we should withdraw, and resupply."

Alia of the Blade |
"While in theory, i would be inclined to agree with you, we can't know if our...mishap, lets call it, affected anybody else. The way the air got all cleaner down here suggests that it was not merely a local explosion. Wether ratters, construction workers, or other people trying to get these problems under control...there may be people needing our help, unconscious and heavily wounded down here in the sewers. I agree that we should not put ourselves in more danger than necessary, but we should do a basic sweep of the open areas, make sure nobody else got wounded from that explosion. Otherwise, their deaths are on our hands, if we leave now and they don't survive the night!"
If we can be reasonably certain that nobody else was in the sewers, thats fine. But I don't want to return tomorrow and find a burned body that bled to death from countless rat bites...
Also, @GM, on account of the methane being gone and the air burned, are those who failed the initial save still sickened? Or did getting exploded help with that?

"Hmmm... running out of healing spells entirely puts us in a dangerous position. We need to hold at least one back for emergencies, perhaps more. In this case getting more healing ability seems like a good idea before we get into more trouble."
RPGGGM |

Those who were sickened can be unsickened. I figure you are now hurt enough.

Checking the nearby area and all of its twists and turns takes about 20 minutes of time. And in that time you don't find anyone else just more rank passages. (Those who haven't can still attempt the earlier perception check though for useful garbage.)
You see the city guard (at the prodding of some officials) begin poking about the scene.

It looks like the sort of thing you might buy at the county fair and later find on a shelf in your grandparent's house. Aside from ascetics or sentimental attachments it looks to you to be a curio of little or no actual monetary worth.

That would be uptown along High Market Street--a posh shop district.
Numalar Auritonius |
Numalar looks up at the ladder with distaste.
"I'd prefer not to deal with the town guard on this issue, nor do I care to be seen in this state, so perhaps we can find an exit that is not presently manned by them."
If we can find an access to the surface where we can't hear anything then Numalar will suggest we exit the sewers that way, and then circle around to find Luna and head uptown to buy a wand. If we can't find one then we will just have to talk our way past the guards.
Zokon Santyev |
Can we find another way out?
Scarlet Scarab |
Scarlet holds onto the box.
"Pfft. NOW the guard is interested. Should we look for another way out?"
RPGGGM |
Can we find another way out?
Not a problem. The party emerges street level somewhere between the halfling quarter and Erastil's Lodge.
Scarlet Scarab |
"Where to next?" Scarlet asks. "We didn't find anyone, but we're in no condition to explore. We should either buy a wand and heal ourselves quickly, or rest for the evening and restart our investigation tomorrow. Personally, I think Erastil's Lodge will gladly accept some extra tithings to put us back on our feet."
Scarlet suddenly remembers something: "Luna! Where's your tiger?"
Celyne |
"Most likely where we left her to guard... I've got to go find her." She takes a step to do so, then stops... "I guess I'm not sure which way to go..." She looks around to see if anything looks familiar at all... then gives a low whistle as a call, see if Luna is in earshot. Shrugs.

Celyne giggles like a schoolgirl as Luna leaps up and lands on Numalar... then leans close to the gnome as she ruffles Luna's fur... "Are you alright?" She helps him up, as I doubt his small frame could handle being pounced on by LUna and not fall over.
Poshment Underhill |
Posh continues to look miserable as he is still filthy from the sewege water.
"I say we head to the nearest in with a clean bath. Now!" he states in a disgusted and disgruntled tone.
Celyne |
"DOesn't anyone have a prestidigitation spell... we could all be clean and smell sweet with that."

"Pfft, we're just gonna get dirty again tomorrow." Scarlet grumbles. "Then again, maybe we should clean up a little. I'm sure the guards will be looking for some stinky sewer rats who caused an explosion recently. And a tiger on the loose."
Alia of the Blade |
"I do, Celyne. Trust me, that kind of smell is beyond such a spells power, lest you want to spend hours upon hours unsoiling ourselves...I second the request for cleaning, but a bath? I don't know...we'd just soak in the stuff. Wasn't there a small river close by? It would allow us to wash and clean our clothes, and, until such time as we did, evade the city guard who may be smart enough to guess our smell and what happened in the sewers are not coincidents."
Mentioning a river, Alia looks at Zokon and Numalar(the "Ranger" and "Mapper" respectively) for confirmation.
A small stream would do, and while I may misremember, most settlements happen to have one in the vicinity

I'm sure you are right... not only is Luna bigger than Numalar but Numalar's strength is only 6. Luna would succeed on a grapple check against Numalar on a 3 or better. :)
As Luna rolls Numalar into the gutter, he cries "Gerroff me you silly cat!"
When Celyne helps him up, he brushes himself off. "Ah, yes. Thank you. That's fine... though we must find Luna a proper chew toy for next time."

"If I recall, we are quite near the docks here. The Shrike River is actually fairly large, though at this time of year it will also be very cold. The ice just broke up a few weeks ago."
Technically I think prestidigitation would do the trick, or at the very least would get rid of most of the offending maaterial, unless GGGM has said otherwise.

Numalar is correct on both points.
Alia of the Blade |
Fine. I think i'm simply personally opposed to cantrips having too much "power", and would have self-ruled that "cleaning" and "cleaning" are not the same things(e.g. rolling around in the sewers vs spilling a cup of milk). But if we go by RAW I could probably spend a night down in the sewers and turn them into almost-drinking-water with sufficient patience, cleaning the sewage itself. Fine with that but we should consider that option, then, too.
On an aside, i do have the spell running permanently, anyway. That red streak in my hair is colored via it.
Zokon Santyev |
"Clean please... Numalar take your time and get us all in civilised shape... so we can go get some healing"
RPGGGM |
Numalar and/or Posh can magically clean up the party via prestidigitation in about half an hour (15 minutes if they work together).
Scarlet Scarab |
"Hmpf." Scarlet grumbles her way through the cleaning process, but reluctantly accepts the healing. At least the party won't bother her about it.
"Where to, then? Erastil's lodge? They should be able to patch us up."
Numalar Auritonius |
Numalar can only cast prestidigitation once per day, and would rather save it for later, since no doubt we will be going back in once we have got some healing. Alia can cast prestidigitation at will though.

@ GGGM: I know how much it costs to hire a spellcaster, but what about hiring an acolyte to channel energy? That would heal us all at once.

I imagine it would be the same as casting the roughly equivalent spell(s). While the 3.x systems added to the list of things a class could do mechanically they did not extend that same consideration out to all aspects of the game.
Considering what you've already donated, Shepherd Keehg and the Lodge are willing to give you a 'freebie,' regardless of how you look or smell when you arrive (it being the neighborly thing to do). They are though, very obviously concerned by how quickly the group seems to have gotten into trouble and council you all during a prolonged preparation period to give up the 'adventuring lifestyle' and find other 'young folk,' marry, settle down and raise children with. Keegh in particular notes, that even the cat in the party seems to have had more sense the rest of you.

Does the elf or Posh deign to clean their fellows then?
Alia of the Blade |
1 person marked this as a favorite. |
I don't cast prestidigitation at will...it's "constant", an always-on thing ;) (mechanically it is at-will...but practically its always active while awake)...as Alia's description says, she keeps her clothing meticulously clean, and uses it to color a strand of hair...since it lasts an hour, its easy enough to renew as often as it takes during the day. I figure she is also used to move small objects that way, rather than doing so manually or moving to pick them up. It is a spell that is "locked" in selection, and will not be, ever, replaced by another Cantrip during daily preparation. Also, since her "fellows" offend her olfactory senses, Alia would basically beg them to let her clean them. She does leave Scarlet a "Sewer Sanchez" dirt-mustache on her face, though ;)
Numalar Auritonius |

LOL!
If shepherd Kreeg gives us a "freebie" channel energy, does this bring us all back to full HP?

Sorry guys. The site's been buggy this week. So what's the plan-- baths, Erastil's Lodge, uptown magic shop, rest at an inn?
Alia of the Blade |
I think the plan was to pick up a wand of healing, get the Channel Energy Freebie, and then, I suppose, continue depending on time of day. I think our little visit to the sewers was not taking long...so if it's still afternoon, it would make sense to get this business over with...and then get PROPER baths, and proper cleaning(rather than magical) in the evening, when we are hopefully done there...
Alia approaches Scarlet in a silent moment while Luna is being retrieved:"You mentioned some weird things living in sewers, some of which sounded quite...dangerous. You know, in the totally unlikely event of something bad happening...I'd appreciate not rotting down there. I swear, with that kind of smell around my resting place I'd come back as a vengeful spirit!"
Scarlet Scarab |
"Sewers. Almost as fun as the open dirt road, or a mountain pass." Scarlet shrugs. "The smell is stronger, though. No worries, Alia. I'll make sure you don't drown down there- what a way to go, eh?"
She turns to the rest of the group. "Let's see if we can buy that wand and get a quick channel from Erastil. I'm sure the clergy there will lecture us. But another chance to bash some rats...hehe! I can't wait."
Numalar Auritonius |
I think the plan was to pick up a wand of healing, get the Channel Energy Freebie, and then, I suppose, continue depending on time of day.
This is my understanding also. The errand to the church of Erastil and to the high market to buy a wand shouldn't take too long. Celyne has used up a few spells but I think everyone else has full resources at the moment. If the zone we were in is still relatively clear we should take advantage of that. Also, maybe acid flasks for those who normally would like to throw alchemist's fire? Or are we good for those?
"Heh... maybe we can just keep dropping alchemist's fire down every manhole cover until all the sewers are clear? No, no, who knows who is down there. But we should finish up our errands and return to this spot and continue our venture while the the rats are still startled and less likely to bother us."
Numalar Auritonius |

No kidding... I've gotten goblins fairly often in the last while. usually just after I try to compose a long post.
