Of Kings and Commoners - Kingmaker AP

Game Master RPGGGM

With the heart of the Stolen Lands explored and the bandits who ruled there scattered, the long-contested realm finally lies open for pioneers and settlers to stake their claims.:
Amid the rush of opportunistic travelers, the PCs find themselves stewards over a new domain, tasked with the responsibility of guiding and guarding a fledgling nation struggling to grow upon a treacherous borderland. Yet the threats to this new nation quickly prove themselves greater than mere bandits and wild beasts, as the monstrous natives of the hills and forests rampage forth to slaughter all who have trespassed upon their territory. Can the PCs hold the land they’ve fought so hard to explore and tame? Or will their legend be just one more lost to the fangs of the Stolen Lands?

Aye, but you'll likely stay with your bow during the combat :)

But yeah, the idea is a free ranged "opening" round for everybody.
Except Luna and Didymus, that is :(

And that goal, it helps to achieve.(Plus if we retreat, I don't have a dropped bow there that needs retrieving)

Btw, I do hope we meet the sage again, down the road.
I found it profoundly funny that Elminster was "cosplaying" as Ed Greenwood.

Of course, Alia knows nothing about all that, but as a player, I was smirking all the time they've been around.

@Also, regarding mentioning the powering-up at the end of the post: It was only AFTER I posted that I realized I had not explicitly stated I was activating it in the previous round. So I added the line with an edit, at the end of the post. I could have placed it better, true.

I'm going for 'fierce' here people--fierce! | The Trading Post | Tactical Map | Region |

Ed will probably return. In fact most of the NPCs in the game have the potential to turn up again.

And speaking of powering up Happy 3rd level everyone! Go ahead and level up. Note to you spellcasters out there you don't get your new spells or slots until after you've rested or had time to prepare them.

Please leave a post on this thread detailing the changes to your character.

I almost forgot about background skills. Again! Basically this equates to more skill points that you can only use for more non-adventury skills. Zokon could for example use these to take ranks in (new skill) Artistry (Beat Poetry) and Profession (Fisherman) if he'd like, to round out his character with. Actually, he should probably sink them into Lore (another new skill) (Kobold)!

Basically, these are hobby skill points. If you have already taken actual ranks in something that you you could have taken with these hobby skill points during your 1st or 2nd level you can spend these instead and recoup those real skill ranks for something else more important ('adventury') to like survival or stealth.

Follow the rules in the link above and let me know what you're taking or replacing (for instance, Celyne gets two more 'regular' ranks to retroactively spend since she can now cover Handle Animal in 'background ranks' if she likes).

PS I updated the House Rules on the Campaign page to reflect the Gaining Hit Points and Background Skills rules additions.

I'll give folks a day or two figure out what they want to do level-wise before continuing.

And as for hit points, you get the new ones, but are still down whatever you are from your new total by however much you are already damaged.

Alteration based on intoduction of Background Skills:
(I attempted to do it with as little book-keeping needed as possible)

Level 1 Background Skills: Lore(Telvurin)+Profession(Elven Smith) - (free up one skill point from profession)
Level 2 Background Skills: Craft(Bows)+Craft(Shields)
Level 3 Background Skills: Handle Animal+Perform(Act) - freeing up both picks.

3 Skill points redistribution:
1 each to Climb, Knowledge(Planes), Swim

I consider Lore(Telvurin) an amalgam of history/geography, focused on the Riverlands when they were still Elven holdings. So quite a lot of information may be out-of-date or otherwise inaccurate, to compensate for it basically covering most of the campaign area, but Alia may know useful tidbits here and there. Do tell if that's ok, though.

Treasure!

Okay, aside from the gp value of the gems Numalar has identified everything. So... there is:

Small mwk crossbow - I recommend this goes to Posh as I have a normal one already and he is a better shot than I.

2 x small mwk wavy daggers - Posh and I can each take one... though I would probably sell mine when we get back to town.

2 x oil of bless weapon - would have been handy before this encounter! Perhaps one for Scarlet and one for Zokon.

2 x wand of enlarge person (one with 33 charges and one with 2) - If Scarlet counts as knowing the spell then she should definitely get one of these. Otherwise Alia and I can both use them. Alia could probably use it more than I since she might use it on herself (which Numalar wouldn't do).

Wand of detect magic (with 10 charges) probably isn't necessary to keep... so unless Zokon is putting points into UMD and wants it we can just sell it off when we get the chance.

scroll of invisibility - I think we have one already. Posh, Alia, and I can all use them. Numalar probably wouldn't be the one having the spell cast on him, though he could cast it on someone else. Alia might want one so she can add it to her spell book at 4th level.

scroll of scorching ray - Alia should probably carry this as she has a better chance of hitting with it than Numalar.

Pearl of Power - Woot! Alia is the only one that can use it.

Re: value of Gems

Nakeska probably has a decent appraise skill. I wouldn't count on her being honest about their value but with Celyne's Abadar's Truthtelling spell we could probably make her answer truthfully. :)

Oil of bless weapon would probably go better with Alia and Scarlet.. it auto crits on a threat so specifically good for Alia.

So gotta get the Wand of enlarged person used on me so I can stomp around saying

"Prepare for extermination!!!!."

I have ranks in Spellcraft, so I can use the wand of detect magic to identify magical items.

@Wand of Detect Magic: It could free up a cantrip slot. With the frequency Numalar uses it, Alia never needed to. But I always kept it prepared in case we got split, Numalar died(again) or some other reason.
Having a reliable source of it "if needed" would allow me to prep a different cantrip.

@Oil of Bless Weapon: Aye, the Auto-Crit-part is great. Especially against creatures with good AC where succeeding on confirmation would be lucky. Also, lasts regular time, not a limited number of hits.

@Scroll of Scorching Ray: I may have slightly better to-hit over Numalar...but it's ranged touch, so that should not be a big deal. More importantly...it's fire. I wouldn't want to take the joy of fuego-ing things from our little pyromancer. Do enjoy, Numalar.

@Pearl of Power: Yay. Amusingly enough, I had considered trying to aquire a few of those to offset diminished casting a bit until overall amount of spells feels sufficient. Awesome!

@Wand of Enlarge: No strong feelings, there, I do intend to prepare the spell. Of course, using is better than letting it go to waste, and it's probably one of those more worthy of using over selling. But: It's close range, not touch, so possibly would be more worthwhile on Numalar! If combat is imminent, Alia would spend time closing with enemies or attacking them. But there have been a few situations in which Numalar was either blocked or did not have a clear line of fire. Plus he depends on his dog for moving, so may often have a free standard action regardless of map movement. If there's nothing better to do, you could always buff me or Scarlet if we're not already large, rather than, say, lob a glob of acid at something with soft cover and in melee :)

* Good point about the wand of detect magic. We would only get 37 gp for selling it, so knock yourself out. Scarlet: I don't think you can use it yet as you don't yet have a caster level, and you don't have UMD skill.

* Re Oil of Bless Weapon: It's between you guys. I had suggested Zokon because Alia already has a way around DR Magic whereas Zokon doesn't. If he had had this before he might have been able to handle the iron maiden, or at least needed less help.

* Re Scroll of scorching ray: If you don't want it, fine, but I have been slinging ranged touch spells all day and hardly ever hit anything, and I do also have my produce flame SLA if I need touch attacks (though I had already used it against the bear today). Also, Alia can afford to get a bit closer to the action to get a clean line of fire. My burning hands will now do just as much damage (4d4+4 vs 4d6), so I suspect that the scroll would just sit in my scroll case and not get used.

* Wand of Enlarge: I hadn't looked at the range and always assumed it was a touch spell. What do you know? The 1 round casting time is a pain though. I'm happy to cast this before a combat but may not have time to use it during combat.

Realized that I forgot this:

RPGGGM wrote:
The torture chamber (the one with the iron maiden) yields a masterwork breastplate mounted on one of the walls, and a pair of metal tongs (2 lbs).

The tongs probably aren't worth anything (Alia could add them to her metalworking tools) but the masterwork breastplate could be good for Scarlet or Zokon. Scarlet makes more sense as she doesn't lose any DEX from it, but it will increase her ACP by 1. Zokon could use it but would only gain +1 AC due to max dex penalty.

Treasure! (updated list)

Small mwk crossbow - Posh ?
Small mwk wavy dagger - Numalar (will sell it when we return to town)
Small mwk wavy dagger - Posh ?
Oil of bless weapon - Alia
Oil of bless weapon - Scarlet
wand of enlarge person (32 charges) - Numalar ?
wand of enlarge person (2 charges) - Scarlet ?
wand of detect magic - Alia
scroll of invisibility - Alia ?
scroll of scorching ray - Numalar ?
pearl of power - Alia
masterwork breastplate - Zokon ? If Zokon wants this one he could pass on his masterwork chain shirt to Scarlet

Also there's the stuff from the Jelly encounter:
masterwork heavy mace - Zokon
jar with gelatinous serving - Alia (if it still paralyzes this would make a cool splash weapon!)
potion of enlarge person - ?
potion of reduce person - ?

We never did assign the potions to anyone. The reduce person potion probably would benefit Zokon the most - it gives him a +2 to hit with arrows, and because arrows return to their normal size when loosed, it doesn't penalize his damage. Also gives a +4 to stealth.

As for the enlarge person potion, who is most likely to need an enlarge effect as a standard action?

Looks like it. But then, most full-casters are not very dependent on equipment to begin with...

@reduce person: well, it does reduce his strenght, so -1 to damage :) but +2 to hit easily compensates, plus it will be fun to have a little ranger guy running around screaming obscenities like some pissed-off choir boy.

Wandering monster upon seeing Lil' Zokon: "He's so cute. Is he yours?" ;)

Honestly, I think is says something about the party that all the men in it are, or have the potential to be 'gnomes'.

Actually Celyne could use the potion of reduce person, then she could ride Luna around the battlefield.

I always wondered why Celyne did not pick up the "Ancient Lorekeeper" - Archetype.

She could fetch things like "Enlarge Person" to add it to her spell list, then cast it on Luna(as per Share Spells), and ride her large kitty into battle :)

I think even with 'share spells', Luna is not a viable target for enlarge PERSON... that would be a dm call, but in my game it wouldn't happen... just sayin'

Share spells pretty clearly states that it would work. Your call at your table, of course, but raw, it's legal, because it ignores the targetting requirement of "one humanoid person".

Note that

Quote:
Spells cast in this way must come from a class that grants an animal companion.

means no spell completion items. Only actual spells that you can cast qualify, and only on your companion, not any other beasts...since you have a special bond, you can bypass usual restrictions.

Spells cast in this way must come from a class that grants an animal companion. This ability does not allow the animal to share abilities that are not spells, even if they function like spells.

She is and she isn't. She counts as a person in that you can cast your share spell on you animal companion even if the spells normally do not affect creatures of the companion's type (animal).

However, the spell enlarge person has a target of "one humanoid creature", not "you" like: longstrider, speak with animals, glide, blend, stone fist, tree shape, or greater animal aspect. In that regard it doesn't work.

But it's two separate sentences, not a sequence.

Quote:
The druid may cast a spell with a target of “You” on her animal companion (as a touch range spell) instead of on herself.

This states that even personal spells can be shared with the animal companion.

I'll gladly dig out the FAQ ruling for this, but it's not supposed to ONLY work with "personal" spells regardless of wether they affect animals. It's supposed to be inclusive in both aspect, allowing both "you" and "non-animal" spells to affect the AC.

That said, it's your table, and your ruling. Just trying to explain raw, as Celyne stated she'd not allow it at her table, which would sell an important class feature(share spells) short.

I would be grateful and impressed if you could. Every thread that I have seen argue the point has a little tag at the top that says 'FAQ response team response: no response necessary' or words to that effect. As if it is our fault their text is ambiguous. It has been my one pet peeve with Pathfinder and even more-so with the Society that they cannot simply put the rules in one place and be concise about them. Sometimes it's like talking to chaotic evil tech nerds about your computer.

I'll take the potion of enlarge person. Growing large quickly would be a great help.
