Also the reason why I do not want to deal with mod derails is because I have minimal ability to homebrew, which I have stated at the start of the game.
Besides, with much less tabletop experience then most, what makes me think I know better then mod writers how to come up with stuff that would be fair? Earlier posts I stated about some creations that would be CR appropriate:
Did I tell you about me brewing up two aerial derodaemons with a worm that walks wizard?
But of course.. Specially designed to screw the party over. Fair? Nadda.
The first time I run a mod or AP I try to follow it as written close as possible. With more familiarity with the mod/AP, I am more willing to adjust.
Yes Howard - I'm talking about Carrion Hill.

Leonard Giles Neithan |

Your command of the language?
"Zuch as making zure zee zublies reach zee schobs,"
*Scratches head in confusion.*
In actual fact, if English isn't your first language I can't tell. Your descriptions of scenery are not particularly inspiring, but they are serviceable. In pretty much every other category, I give you top marks (which is to say I haven't seen you do worse than well yet). I prefer to run with rules as guidelines myself, but at least your strict adherence to RAW is consistent and clear. I agree that you're better than most GMs on the boards.
Also, I wasn't suggesting that you run a live chat. I think it would be unnecessary in this game.

GM Mort |

Such as making sure the goods reach the shop.
Sorry! Was fooling around with a German accent imitator just to spice things up!
I can stick to plain ol' English, if you like.

Leonard Giles Neithan |

I like the accents, I'd keep using them. Accents exist in real life, they ought to exist in game too.

Seamus Passeri |
Hey, I jumped in and read the threads, we've started the interview process, Will any diplomacy rolls help with this or are we looking for sense motive, or possibly bluff to get them to think we want to assassinate the ambassador as well.
I will post after I get to work in a couple of hours.
Leonard, when we get back to the ship, Seamus will inquire about how you acquired the sword :-)

GM Mort |

You need to ask questions like good ol Sherlock Holmes to rule out suspects etc, before I can start rolling bluff v sense motive.
The usual like where were you when the poison was discovered etc.

GM Mort |

At some point of time we'll need to have a friendly chat about the law-chaos dischrotomy. Unfortunately I'm a little busy at work at the moment. Just managed to UMD the comp to do what I want it to.

Leonard Giles Neithan |

At this point, if it were real life, I'd be lying a lot and trying to get the suspect to say something inadvertently. My first reaction is to say something like "Why haven't you been successful yet? We could kill you right now if we wanted to, the target would reward us, etc."
However, lying is oddly difficult in Pathfinder, so Leonard won't be doing that any time soon. And I think our next words ought to be chosen carefully if we want to leverage our skill points properly. Seamus ought to be around pretty soon, right?

Seamus Passeri |
Sorry work was .... difficult, so I got on late, I'm willing to have Seamus bluff, but I'm not sure he would figure out what's going on. I would think asking a few questions would be appropriate, I will start thinking about questions that may trip her up, If I think of any I will post them.
I'm half tempted to tell her that we are here after the heartstone and she asked us to find the assassin, Then bluff and say that we would help the assassin. but if it's not her we may have trouble explaining our way out with the Ambassador, of course we could let the ambassador in on it.

GM Mort |

Things to note is that the room was trapped even before you entered it. Vincent would have noticed the trap as soon as he saw it from outside the room, then flipped the switch to disarm it so the interview could take place in peace.
Who put it there is another different story.

GM Mort |

Reasons for lawfulness, or lawful anality:
Chances are, if you started playing D&D – someone would have passed you a CRB, or maybe some online version of a CRB, telling you to get familiar with the rules. So you would have read the book.
Imagine going to another table, where the rules are not applied as you read them. Wouldn’t you feel like you just wasted your time reading all that stuff? By reading the rules, you would have an implicit expectation that they would be put into use…just to be proven wrong. Would it be unfair to you? Yes.
I understand as I GM, that many things are not covered in the rules. The GM has to make a decision on the fly. When that happens, well it happens, and it’s to the whim and fancy of the GM whether he/she decides in your favour or not. I hate having to do that, because I know I have not had much experience with D&D compared to the rest of the world. I try to make things as fair and equitable as possible, but alas, I am not infallible. (Much as I’d like to be) And I know it as well.
And I am afraid that my inexperience will cause me to make an unfair judgement. That is why on my table, I prefer to stick to rules as written – so if anyone asks – we’ll all start from common ground – the CRB that we were all told to read when we first started playing.
As a GM should you make a houserule – it is for you to remember that houserule in play and make sure you apply it all the time, or it would be not equitable. And also – as a GM – how sure are you that by making the house rule, you’re not causing another problem by unbalancing power levels between players? Or screwing some player over?
Furthermore – I am a rather emotionally charged person. So if I have a bad day at work, or haven’t been fed…
Yes, I killed a Player Character at a con…and I suspect part of the reason was because I was feeling hungry. The other part was because of stupid decision making on the players part.
Some Babau Demon casts darkness. So in a party of humans, no one knows where the babaus are. The paladin/gunslinger multiclass declares: I walk into the darkness and shoot at it. He doesn’t hit anything.
Next round the babau creeps up to him, then bites him. He stubbornly uses heroes defiance to lay on hands himself since he’d be unconscious after the bite + sneak attack damage. He rolls low on his lay on hands, then I proceed with the iteratives, of the next claw, which kills him outright. Had he just stayed down – the babau would have thought he was dead and left him alone.
So lets say I get a bad day at work - by using Rules as guidelines - it will mean that I am likely to create a ruling that works against the players just because I'm in a bad mood. Whereas if everything is interpreted RAW - you have consistency. You know what to expect and can plan for it.

Seamus Passeri |
ok, let me recap:
Blah .... blah.... blah... I'm Lawful Neutral Blah .... blah .... blah...
:-)
all kidding aside, I totally agree with you. It's nice when the rules of the game are clear and concise. I'm Ok with 'house rules' as long as they as spelled out very clearly. Frankly if I see a recruitment for a game that has a lot of 'house rules' I don't apply. Usually because I don't want to try and remember a new set of rules as well.

GM Mort |

I know my character build rules were kinda long, but you know lawyers and how they try to cover everything with their clauses...

GM Mort |

I’ll say down here I am waiting for player input. Since no one has violently objected to TALKING with the Night hag – I will not allow Howard’s trick to work – since the party does NOT need Howard’s trick to work.
Reason being is that you will miss out a segment of the story, and you know how I am about trying to make the story known as obviously as possible to everyone. Since you only pass this way once.(Aka Play the AP once)
The party also has the requisite skills to complete this segment successfully such that they do not require short cuts – like Claude stealing the Heartstone.
As I said before – you can interact with NPCs without diplo. If a Diplomancer is required – I will not penalize and indicate as such.
If none of you push the plot – then we’ll just sit here and stare at each other as plot doesn’t move.

![]() |

Yes, well, bluntly, I ain't giving input.
I may not stymie a particular course of action that others wish to forward, since that would be being a bit of a bastard, but I won't forward something I don't care about (in the same way that others, who may not have been entirely comfortable with what happened with the Ib Shades, wren't being overly talkative at that time).

GM Mort |

Guess we can sit around and wait till someone talks, but good on you for posting your intentions clearly here =)
That way people can see that and think of a way to move forward.
I've thought of a bright idea! If no one can think of what to do, I'll trigger Claude trying to steal the heartstone, triggering the spectacular failure results.

Seamus Passeri |
At some point of time we'll need to have a friendly chat about the law-chaos dischrotomy. Unfortunately I'm a little busy at work at the moment. Just managed to UMD the comp to do what I want it to.
So what prompted the 'chat' anyway.
Ok, without Howards big brain and diplomatic disposition how are we going to proceed? Seamus, frankly, relies on Howard to do the heavy 'mental' lifting.
Should we find out how long she has been in the Ambassadors employment and who she worked for before this?

GM Mort |

I prefer to run with rules as guidelines myself, but at least your strict adherence to RAW is consistent and clear.
Of course being a kitty cat of law and order, I will state my stand supporting RAW as well as give reasoning why I do things that way.

![]() |

That said, if me *not* chiming in will screw over the party, I don't want to do that, either...

Vincent Arazeiros |

OK leveling finished I think!
Also filled out extra extracts from sleepless agency and fixed the +1 on longspear/money.
Also filled out my new imp familiar, whew that took a while.

Vincent Arazeiros |

Vorq's M.O. is to stay invisible and assist Vincent in any task, similar to the thing, unless something else is mentally requested. It keeps the CLW wand for Vincent in case it needs to ressucitate him or one of his followers (lol)
Howard, do you have any crafting time left? Looking at maybe 6k market value total (3k craft cost) for some boro beads (pearls of power). If so I can have Vincent ask later in game. Might go for admixture vial to0/instead of, it's 5k market.

![]() |

Certainly, but not right now, as I am in the middle of the 'second stage' of crafting on a big item.

GM Mort |

Before the sense motive is done, I need to hear some conversations regarding the murder attempts.

Vincent Arazeiros |

Vincent's not a very good talker. He's mainly watching people and how they act and delivering feedback to the others. Will leave it up to the others to do the actual conversing that he is studying.

Vincent Arazeiros |

Well then Vincent is likely to say are you trying to kill her and hoping to catch someone lying lol.

GM Mort |

Go ahead! That's at least some conversation and better then plot going nowhere!
Edit:That actually has a good chance of working and lets me share with you their life stories...

GM Mort |

Forgot to say last night, female. I was playing path of exile with my brother! Sorry!
But the sort of female that's rather...flat,if you get my drift.

Leonard Giles Neithan |

Not very interesting? I know the type, something is just...missing. *Chuckles*
Anyhow, I would've posted earlier, but I've been busy up till now. Had an extremely minor surgery today, but it still took a long time. Stupid hospitals.

GM Mort |

What happens on this part of the module is that all subjects roll their bluff against all your sense motives. If you succeed, you read their true intentions, if you fail, what information you read them will be false.
Honestly these little conversations are so much better for GM entertainment value then just stealing and be done with it =)
What surgery?
Flat = not curvy in the body structure sense.

Seamus Passeri |

Get your drift, of course I get your drift.

GM Mort |

I really wanted to find a Spanish accent generator but couldn't find one so I used Austrian instead.

Leonard Giles Neithan |

Ahh, I get what you're saying, she has good posture and doesn't slouch. Makes sense, seeing as how the people in the room are all fairly high status.
Surgery was the removal of a small lump on the bottom of my left jaw. It was mostly out of the way, but kindof weird looking, and possibly could have become something dangerous. Turned out to just be a lump of skin that was growing backwards, which is nothing to worry about.

Leonard Giles Neithan |

They used a local anesthesia, it was kindof strange. You can still feel some forms of pressure, and you can also feel warm and cold things a little bit, but there's no pain. My experience was a lot of tugging and pulling and stuff, it was unsettling. I absolutely hate painkillers, since they make my body stop working properly and also make it so that instead of feeling pain I get to feel bad about myself. Plus, I usually end up getting paranoid that I've hurt myself and not noticed, at which point I want to tear something in half. Which is exceptionally unusual for me, since I'm generally very patient and calm.
It really doesn't hurt though.

GM Mort |

If they didn't put you on local Anesthesia the pain would be so bad you'd be squirming around and they wouldn't be able to conduct the operation. If you want to see what it's like without pain killers then don't take them and see what happens.

GM Mort |

Seamus is currently sleeping as he is off work. He'll probably crash for another 12 hours or so more since he was pushing 30 h without sleep.
Just wait for him to login, meanwhile just chill and relax.

Leonard Giles Neithan |

Well yeah, not using painkillers during the operation would be a dumb. Likewise, if I was in constant excruciating pain that interfered with my ability to do things, I'd probably take some painkiller, despite hating it.
Luckily, my face does not really hurt, so it's just not an issue.
Not sleeping's kindof hard, I think it's time for me to go to sleep myself.

Vincent Arazeiros |

That's weird, I have a scan of one on my right jaw which they might remove. We we're lumpy twins for a bit!

Leonard Giles Neithan |

Huh, cool. It's probably not particularly uncommon, I suppose.
