Unlike in a situation where you cast Detect Magic outside of combat or rounds, it is assumed you take the time to look at everything. In combat, Detect Magic is cast in a sixty foot cone from the spell caster. Line of sight would be applicable. Also, it takes rounds to get the full effect.
@Elektra - Caleb changing his target makes sense; however, Thug 1's action would been different. I will need to retcon the Thugs actions. He would have attacked the real Hound Archon, and not moved. I will update after Stone's response.
