After six long weeks, this morning the crew of The Peregrine sighted land to the west. A few hours later, The Peregrine sails into a natural bay with a sandy beach within rowing distance for the ship’s boats. As the crew begins to untie one of the smaller boats to lower it into the water, the sailors pass a spyglass among themselves and finally hand it back to the captain. Captain Jacob Markosi peers at the island for a moment before grunting and handing the spyglass to expedition leader Ramona Avandth. “You should see this,” he says quietly. Ramona accepts the spyglass and peers toward the shore. When she lowers the scope, she is clearly distressed but trying to hide her worry. She approaches and motions toward the far side of the deck, away from where most of the other colonists have congregated. “Can I have a word with you?” she asks.
Once you guys have relative privacy, “We have a problem,” Ramona says bluntly and explains, “Something is wrong. Nobody’s in sight. There’s no smoke from cook fires or the smithy. Some of the buildings look burned out.” She will offer the spyglass for you to look if you want to. Ramona continues, her voice low. “Sailors can’t keep their mouths shut. Soon all the other colonists are going to hear about this—if they can’t see for themselves already—and things could become… tense.” Ramona asks, "Would you be able to go ashore and check out the settlement. I am going to ask Captain Markosi to sail north along the island’s coast to a secondary landing site determined by the expedition’s surveyors as an alternative spot to found a colony. After you check out the settlement you can meet us there, then I will make a final determination on where the rest of the colonists should disembark."

"Hmph. Figgures this thing would be goin' south already. Fine fine, drop me off here, I'll take a peek at what these poor saps got 'emselves inta."
Fang will make sure to grab his bags and is ready to disembark whenever the dinghy is ready.

Rhys is a tall, powerfully built man of Shoanti heritage. Beside him is Esgidiau, the small dromaeosaur he keeps as a pet. He scratches the feathers behind the dinosaur's head, but his mouth is a grim line.
"Hard to move a whole camp doesn't want to be moved." he says. "How many were here, before? Trouble'd have to be pretty big to chase 'em away from the safety of camp. War band, maybe? Taken off as prisoners?" He shakes his head, and gives a complicated series of clicks as a command to Esgidiau.
"Let me gear up, I'll be ready in a few." he heads to his cabin to gather gear.
Most of my gear will be left aboard the ship, but I'll move the things I want to take with me into the other items category.

Mary Kay makes certain her hat is on tightly as she grimaces under her mask.
"That seems prudent. A little late in the season to have to start over again in a new location. I doubt we even have enough stores to return to the mainland. I do not know about the rest. But I spent nearly my last coin on a partial share for this. Not going back to live on charity."
With a determined stride she grabs her pack and goes to stand by the (rowboat/longship).
She is good with her backpack for a few days. Most of the bulky stuff is already in her chest. Figured to buy lots of little things and leave coin alone.

Romona looks at Mary Kay, "Yes you are correct, we lack the provisions for both sailors and settlers aboard The Peregrine to make is back to Almas." She motions one of the crew over and tells him to start getting one of the boats ready for transport.
The boat is a rowboat that is 10ft by 20ft and would be able to 8 medium creatures.

Maslow is a slender built vanaran in monk robes that are loose and flowy. He would be hanging out in the crows nest or sleeping on the deck when possible. He doesn't talk much seems to be bothered by idle chit chat. Often you will see him practicing his skills on the deck very late at night.
Maslow will let out a big yawn oh boy! Finally here huh? Well let's go see what kind of trouble they got into. maslow will grab the spyglass and take a look at the beach himself

Eustice takes in the information and processes it, "Quite odd... yes, quite odd indeed." he whispers to himself. With a shake, his expression changes to a smile and a twinkle appears in his eye. "What do you think Brother?"
"They're probably all dead. Eaten maybe." the spirit lets out in a croaking hiss.
"Now, now Brother. Mustn't be so negative. Maybe they went for a walk..." and bit of worry crosses his eyes, "the whole village... at once... Yes! Nothing better than a morning constitutional! Why, all this fine island living has probably taken its toll and they needed to work off a bit of excess, is all. Let me just grab my things."
He tosses his pack in the longboat and maneuvers his way into a seated position, tentacles twitching slightly. The spirit follows and finds a seat as well.

"See Brother, Maslow isn't worried. He's taking a nap." Eustice's bravado begins to falter. "Nothing to concern ourselves with..." . His gaze falls on the empty beach as he trails off.
"You keep telling yourself that. You might actually believe it eventually." the spirit rasps.

Before you head out she looks at Mary Kay and says "We don't want to send any of the guards or sailors because we don't want to escalate the tension on the ship, but here take these since we can't send anyone else to help." Ramona will hand over 4 vials of Red Liquid from a pouch on her side.
Once you are in the all in the boat you are lowered into the water and off on your way to shore.

Mary Kay carefully stands and waves back toward the ship. Circling her arm to include everyone on the rowboat she then signals back OK with exaggerated gestures.
Dropping down with a thud on the bench she remarks,
"Ramona is appointed by the company. Someday, some sort of elected body will get formed. At least they will remember this day."

"Keep an eye out. Might be more." Take ten on Handle Animal to command Esgi to Seek. Swift to swap animal focus on Esgi to Falcon, giving him a +4 competence bonus to Perception.

Looks to be clear of any more Grindylows and you are able to finish your journey to land.
A well-worn path in the grass rises up a slope toward a cluster of buildings to the east. The buildings are arranged in a rough triangle, with each point ending in a wooden circular enclosure with rectangular notches cut intermittently, like battlements. These round enclosures are clearly meant to be three points of a wooden palisade fence, which would enclose this first group of buildings once completed. The palisade fence, however, is complete only along the southeastern side of the triangle and is obviously unfinished elsewhere. The grass around the settlement looks like it was cropped at one point, and many paths exist between locations in the settlement, but in less well-trafficked spots, the grass has started to regrow. All the buildings are constructed of either rough timber or mud bricks set in a wooden frame, and have pitched thatch roofs. Many have open window frames, but only a few have actual shutters or even a canvas curtain for privacy. Doors are basic, wooden affairs, too simple for locks, and some buildings lack them entirely. The construction is new, quite rough and unfinished.
A solitary dock extends from the beach into the bay. The construction is solid and looks recent, suitable for tying off a small boat, although no watercraft are visible. The beach inclines to the east before giving way to grass and trees. Further on in that direction, buildings and a palisade wall stand on the rise.

"Grindylows... hmph! Dreadful little creatures, but typically not so bold. It's not like them to mount an offensive on an entire settlement like this. At least not on their own..." Eustice says.
"Listen to him, bold as brass, talking like he knows everything..." Brother mutters.
"Oh go make yourself useful and search these buildings! You're just grumpy because you were knocked over in the boat, you sour-puss!" Eustice reprimands the phantom.
Brother doesn't move farther than 50' from Eustice, but begins searching the closest buildings if they are in range. In his incorporeal form he just phases through the walls and telepathically tell Eustice what he sees.
