I was just wondering what everybody's status was. I'm somewhat disappointed in the fact that nobody's posted in a week (some even longer than that). While I understand that sometimes life's a pain, it would be courteous to fellow players to at least check in and say something. :(
I apologize for my lack of posting. I was waiting on Gevtodt to respond, so that we could come up with our plan.

OK, my idea was that we should bring a tall ladder so we could get up to a higher level direct from the boat if we want (better than messing with a grappling hook & rope). It sounded like the barge was moored on one side (or the end?) of the warehouse, with people milling around it last we saw... Maybe a ROUGH map would give us the best idea of this, Lilith?
I want to hear what Z says, but I'm thinking we could approach unseen, and come up to the Barge. We may have to deal with a guard or two (probably not as many people, in the dark & fog), but we deal them if they're there, and then we can cut the ropes to the barge, and set it drifting, which could be a distraction (maybe even toss a flaming oil flask onto the barge as we push it off).
Then we jump back in our boat, between the piers under the warehouse (or just row around - but anyone who comes wouldn't be looking under the pier) and tie off on the other side, climbing up our ladder to look in the lit windows, while hopefully there's some sort of distraction with the barge threatening to float away, pulling guards away from their normal stations. Our retreat option is climbing/jumping down to the boat, and rowing away, either across the bay or just into another warehouse/pier.
They'll know someone's doing something, but we can point the attention in the wrong way, to the barge... We COULD just skip the barge distraction part, and take the ladder straight to the windows... or... Z?
Personally I'm a big fan of just sneaking in through window, but your option of setting the barge on fire as a distraction brings a smile to my face.
My vote goes to barge fire. Now do the qustion is do you have any oil flasks handy?

Hey Coyote, Welcome, if you're dropping back in the game...
If you could, add in any thoughts you have about our approach,
since we haven't really started yet...
Otherwise, my idea was we make sure and wrap one end of a ladder with rags, so it wouldn't make as much noise against the side of the warehouse. And for either of the boat approaches, the best thing would probably be to tie a rope to an adjacent pier's piling first, so that at any point, we can haul our selves away with the rope (faster and quieter than paddling)... And if we go UNDER the pier, someone can grap/push off the pilings to help maneuver the boat.
...I don't have any oil flasks off-hand (Coyote?), but even if stores are closed now, we could probably buy one from either the restaurant or a tavern (since the main lighting is probably oil lamps) we'll just offer more than the going rate to whoever helps us out.
Lilith: on the map, would some of the lit windows I saw be on the 'left' side of the warehouse (opposite the walkway?) that would be the approach I would go for, if we're doing this plan... Also, can we presume that reasonably close on either side of this warehouse are other warehouses more or less similar in lay-out?

OK, let's go with that then.
Since we don't really know what's on the boat,
(rotten fish apparently, perhaps they're smuggling stuff?)
let's just go with the minimal effective distraction, and just use one oil flask...
I *DO* have some tindertwigs, so we're in business.
If you understand what I meant about the rope tied to a piling,
then we just need to get a bit more info from Lilith on the surrounding piers, and the location of the windows.

Just keep in mind that arson's likely a hanging offense. :) Also, the barge fire would pretty quickly spread to the northern (?) end of the building, so you'd have to move fast or you'd end up inside your own inferno. I have a vague suspicion that burning down the building would attract the authorities and make me very sad. ;)
Sneaking in the window and sapping everyone in sight would be Coyote's preference were he there, but he prefers not to attract attention where possible.
Quandary |
OK, I agree that the fire is probably too dicey... Even if we cut the ropes and push as hard as we can, it's not going to be drifting away THAT quickly, and if the mast catches, that could tip over.
SO... Dropping the fire bit, we can go for the stealth attack on the dock guards (if they'res any there), or ignore them (to our peril?) and just slip in from the side, & put the ladder up to the windows. The rope is still a good idea, to give ourselves a quick & silent escape route/ transit between the back dock and the 'alley' under the windows... Zarak?
(I guess it's just us 2, and Lilith will be dropping Coyote in our lap at some point...)
EDIT: Whoever this Coyote fellow is, he sure doens't skimp on Sunrods (I looked at his Profile, he has *10* :-) )
Dunzeltoff Haelcannon |
OK, but should we still try to check the back dock and take out any guards there, or just bypass it, and sneak up to under the windows?
We can either tie the rope to a pile on the OPPOSITE side of the next pier, and navigate under it until we come under the windows, or tie it more at the nearest corner of the next pier, which draws us closer to the open water, but very close to the back dock (and open to roof snipers)
Up to you...
but then I think we pretty much have our plan together, Lilith...

You guys may be slightly overthinking this. Given Lamm's "too big to oppose and too small to squash" status, he's likely suffering from an excess of confidence. To have the children working so openly is a sure sign of hubris, and that can work to your advantage. Avoid the front door (too obvious) and the barge side (watched too carefully), and you should be golden.
Re the sunrods: always be prepared. :)
Quandary |
Yeah, that was my take on Lamm, pretty much...
But, like you said, always be prepared :-)
OK, let's just bypass any guards on the dock/boat, and we'll approach by going under the adjacent pier. If it has an 'alley' on it's other side like this one, we'll go in there, tie off approximately straight across from where the lit windows are on Lamm's place.
Then we negotiate our way through, one person paddling, one grabbing and pushing off piles. We can tie off another end of the rope to a pile right under the window, swing the ladder up together, and then up we go. If we need to retreat, we go down the ladder, cut the nearest rope tie (I'll leave a knife nearby, ready to cut loose) and haul ourselves back under the next warehouse pier...

Updated maps with light sources and window locations. Edit: To clarify, this is the upper level and this is the lower level.
Dunzeltoff Haelcannon |
OK... updated plan (thorough-like now):
We still tie a rope to an adjacent pier, to pull ourselves away silently to safety if needed. I don't have the clearest picture of the adjacent area, but however we approach, I'll cast my spells (Bless & 2 Shield of Faiths) about 2 rounds before coming to the barge.
Now, though, we'll pull up to the front of the ship, on the side near the building... So we're between the barge and the corner-most pile, adjacent to the dinghy on the lower level. We'll tie up to the pier (knife nearby to cut & run), and might get a glimpse at the dinghy(?)
As we approach, we're silent as possible, trying to hear anyone nearby (or inside). If anyone is directly nearby, we'll try to sneak attack them, otherwise we get the ladder up quick.
Either way, we climb up to the barge, hauling up the ladder. I figure we'd try the very first window, 5' away. Hopefully we can climb onto the barge and get in position just below the window in 2 rounds or so.
I think I should enter first, since my glaive has 10' reach, and Zarak can follows with his crossbow, switching to melee if needed. Right before we enter, just below the window, I'll use my Touch of Luck on myself.
I think we're ready to go with this, any thoughts Zarak?
And when we run into Lamm, I'm planning to make sure he's surrendering BEFORE announcing our purposes. If his henchmen are taken care of and he tries something, we might want to knock him out (I think that's -2 att). Otherwise, if we can take control of the situation, there's probably some interesting stuff to discover, besides releasing the children... If it all works out, I hope to find an orphanage or homes for them thru my church.
BTW: You should bring rope to tie people up with, I don't have any weight encumbrance to spare.

If the spot for a new player is still available, I'd gladly step into it. Which of the house rules are still being used with the Beta?
Still available, but I won't work you in quite yet. As for the house rules, the priority is:
1.) House Rules2.) RPG Beta
3.) Std 3.5
That is, House Rules override the Beta, which overrides the standard 3.5 rules.
