Carina Viera |
Reflex Save (Shield Other, DEX Mutagen): 1d20 + 9 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (16) + 9 + 2 + 1 = 28
Carina easily avoids the worst of the lightning, even with the bolt in her shoulder. Not that it helps much, since she feels Tanith taking the worst of her shock...
Round 3: Actions
Move Action: Reload Crossbow
Standard Action: Move back into the hallway
Knowledge (Arcana): 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (16) + 11 = 27
"Squid-thingy there is levitating." She says as she reloads her crossbow. "Come on--pull back! We're sitting ducks here!"
She turns and steps over the prone Spiny, running back to the hallway where she has cover.
Eben MacTeague |
Reflex: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18
Ick. Casting timely inspiration as an immediate action to give me a +2 on that. And using an AP to save the slot.
Eben just manages to avoid the worst of the lightning. He sees Spiny go down, then looks down at the newly-revealed healing wand in his hand. "Hold on, boy!" he shouts.
Going to delay my action slightly, to see if I can either get a space to move in next to Spiny or if someone else gets zapped and needs it worse.
Tanith 'Kordson' Creed |
So Tanith takes 30 total. Half damage plus half of Carina’s half damage plus half of a crossbow bolt.
Tanith turns around and falls back with Carina. He pauses long enough to lay a hand on the fallen Spiny’s muzzle praying for his strength to return.
CLW (formerly bless): 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
Sorry, I needed to nab that space.
Eben MacTeague |
Eh, 'salright, getting out of the nice straight line when the bad guy has a wand of lightning bolts is a good plan regardless.
Eben follows the retreating party members out the door, pausing next to Carina on the other side. "If anyone's badly hurt, get over here."
Move action: move 30 feet, standard action: ready an action to use the wand on anyone who runs up next to me and says they need healing. Or just nudges me with their head, if they're a nontalking creature.
Oh, and my UMD check for that readied action:1d20 + 16 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 16 + 2 = 22 Er.. well, you can move up next to Eben, but you don't get no healing.
Farrukh Al'Khatel |
1d20 + 9 ⇒ (15) + 9 = 24
Farrukh manages to avoid the brunt of the blast, but isn't left in good condition.
1d20 + 10 ⇒ (5) + 10 = 15
"Tentacle head!" he burbles, addled by both poison and electric shocks.
Dungeon Kobold |

Farrukh and Spiny are up. Eben is offering free heals to whoever wants them.
Cuetzpalli |
Spiny walks into the room, trying to get out of the cramped hallway that just electrocuted him.
Stand and move.
Eben MacTeague |
Aren't all wands DC 20?
What you're thinking of is the DC to cast a spell from a wand that isn't on your class spell list. This is a DC 25 for blind activation- we haven't actually identified the wand, so I don't know the trigger to activate it. (Technically, I don't even know that it casts CSW, just that it packs a healing spell with a bit of oomph.) Since I've activated it before, I get a +2 on my UMD checks, but that's it. (If I knew the command, I wouldn't even need to make a UMD- it's on my spell list and I'm the right caster level for it.)
Dungeon Kobold |
As Farrukh rushes back and almost receives some sorely-needed healing, the disoriented Spiny rushes forward to face the enemy.
Round 4: Squidface and Blackf Drow:
The squid-faced creature pulls its way over the wall, holding up the twisted bone again. It seems to regard Tanith and Carina thoughtfully for a moment. Then the hum fills the air once more, and another blast of lightning emits from its clawed hand.
Spiny Reflex: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27
Spiny in particular is hit hard by the blast, despite dodging the majority of it. It seems as if the dinosaur is just plain moving slower than usual. The dinosaur wobbles on his two legs, then collapses to the ground, twitching.
~By all means, continue fleeing. It's not as if I have more important things to do with my time than chase rodents through a maze.~
Carina must make a Reflex save, again DC 19, or take 8d6 + 15 ⇒ (3, 3, 5, 5, 4, 4, 4, 2) + 15 = 45 damage (again, save for half). Spiny takes 22 damage, putting him at -16. I rolled for Spiny because Jelani generally prefers it, and also because we're approaching a crossroads and I wanted to know the results immediately so Jelani and I could begin settling it.
Nobody can see the drow, but they hear splashing and angry mutters. A moment later, the adventurers can hear what sounds like stone grinding against stone.
Water is now at ten feet. The drow are submerged.
Round 4: You are up!
Eben MacTeague |
"So you're Telakin's boss, right? The one who sent all the doppelgangers against us in the first place? Why?"
Going to wait and see how bad off Carina is before using the CSW wand this round, (since it will be used either on her or Farrukh), but just making my UMD check in advance.
1d20 + 16 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 16 + 2 = 30
Which means...
3d8 + 5 ⇒ (5, 7, 4) + 5 = 21 points of beautiful, beautiful healing to either the lady in blue or the man with the scary shield.
As an aside to the group, Eben says in a low voice, "Tanith, Farrukh, you two should stand to either side of the door here and get ready to murder the first thing that walks through. As long as we're not standing in line with that hall, they can't attack us without coming through it..."
Dungeon Kobold |
~I don't know why I bother. You humanoids are so bothersome to dispose of. Small minds make for difficult targets.~
Eben MacTeague |
"But you specifically targetted us, for a reason!"
Dungeon Kobold |
~Unlike the actions of humanoids, everything I do has a reason behind it.~
Eben MacTeague |
"Sounds good to me."
Farrukh moves to the indicated position and readies himself to receive visitors.
For the record, since the indicated position is kinda filled by me right now, as soon as I heal either Carina or Farrukh I'm going to move 5 feet east. So as soon as I do that, Farrukh can slink into place. (i'll move both icons on the map when I go.)
Eben MacTeague |
Okay, upon reflection, Carina won't go unconscious even if she fails her reflex save, thanks to Shield Other, and since I think she or Tanith have the CMW wand, I'll start patching Farrukh up.
Eben gives a desperate shake of the wand in Farrukh's direction. "Come on, do it again!" This time it activates.
Farrukh heals 21 damage.
Upon managing that, Eben takes a step back to let Farrukh take a guarding position on the doorway.
Cuetzpalli |

You forgot Spiny has evasion, so assuming he made the save he took no damage.
Carina Viera |
Round 4: Actions
Move Action: (If Spiny is still up) Yell at Spiny to get out of there
Standard Action: Move behind Eben
Reflex Save (Shield Other, DEX Mutagen): 1d20 + 9 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 9 + 2 + 1 = 13
Carina looks back as Spiny gets up and starts wandering the other way.
What the hell is he doing. What the hell is he doing?! NO NO NO DON'T GO IN THERE--
--and her train of thought is interrupted by another bolt of lightning. Thanks to Tanith's magic, she's barely still on her feet.
"SPINY! GET OVER HERE NOW!" She practically screams as she staggers behind Eben.
Handle Animal?: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (15) + 9 = 24
Cuetzpalli |
Spiny listens to Carina and runs back into the hallway, and away from the lightning squid.
Double move back into the hallway.
Tanith 'Kordson' Creed |
Tanith groans when the painful feedback from his bond with Carina hits him but the sight of the undine still standing gives him strength. He retreats a step from the dangerous hallway and chugs a potion.
CLW: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Dungeon Kobold |
Round 5:
Swim: 1d20 ⇒ 81d20 ⇒ 17
For a moment, there is no sound from the room save for some splashes and some clangs as the two invisible drow rapidly scale the ladder.
The telepathic voice returns. ~Very well. I will see you soon.~
The adventurers hear the casting of a spell, though it's too distant for any of them to be able to identify it.
Round 5: You are up!
Water is now at 15 feet. Note that outside the water, the invisible drow are, well, invisible again.
Tanith 'Kordson' Creed |
Does Tanith have either of those healing wands? Otherwise he's going to be chugging potions.
Eben MacTeague |
If you have to ask the question, I'd assume the default answer is 'no, we just jammed it in Carina's haversack'. We never actually specified what we did with the leftover potions either, but I kind of assumed we'd have split them out evenly among the rest of us. (2 each, plus two leftovers, which would probably go to the front-liners, so 3 potions apiece for Tanith & Farrukh.) Does anyone know off the top of their heads if our cache of CLW potions was including the four 'murky' ones we had as well? If not, we still have those to fall bakc on (nothing bad has happened to Farrukh from drinking the iffy barkskin, so they aren't immediately dangerous, at least...
Oh, and I forgot about the ladder, so it looks like well have fewer rounds to sit back & prepare than I'd thought. Stay on your toes, everyone!
As Eben notices Carina staggering by, her hair shooting out in all directions and actual sparks of electricity still popping around her as she walks, he gives her a brush with the healing wand as well.
UMD: 1d20 + 16 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 16 + 2 = 27
CMW: 3d8 + 5 ⇒ (7, 7, 8) + 5 = 27
mirror image has 6 images remaining and lasts 65 rounds.
Tanith 'Kordson' Creed |
In the past I'm pretty sure we assumed the stuff sorted under 'party loot' was being lugged around by Tanith but that's fine. Carina can dig up the other wand and give it a shot.
But with that in mind:
Tanith falls in alongside Carina while trying to restore his spent strength.
CLW (no more divine favor): 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (7) + 5 = 12
Dungeon Kobold |
Carina and Spiny are up.
Out of curiosity, how long are you guys willing to wait for someone to come by before seeking a new course of action?
Eben MacTeague |
I'd say until we're reasonably patched up/out of healing options.
Cuetzpalli |
Spiny moves to where he's not cramped up against everyone, and then lays down on the floor. He's under a lot of stress at the moment and just wants to be left alone, it appears. Unless something attacks him, or something handles him, he's not going to move.
Move as indicated on map.
Carina Viera |
Round 5: Actions
Standard Action: Ready Action: Shoot the first drow that comes through the door!
When Eben heals Carina, the numbness in her extremities is burned away and briefly replaced with incredible pain.
Carina gives Spiny a sympathetic look as the dinosaur sits on the floor. The poor thing had barely survived one lightning bolt and (somehow) managed to evade another. No wonder he was acting this way. "I know, Spiny. I know."
She aims her crossbow at the door and prepares to fire...
Readied Ranged Attack (PBS, Precise, Cover, DEX Mutagen): 1d20 + 9 + 2 - 4 ⇒ (18) + 9 + 2 - 4 = 25
Damage? (PBS): 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Dungeon Kobold |
Those who are healing (meaning those not readying attacks) have two rounds with which to do so. Also post your readied actions, as Carina has done, and place your figures on the map. Finally, those in range should specify any AoO strategies they wish to employ—take all AoOs at the first opportunity, or hold off and wait for the next (if there is one) to avoid overkill? Otherwise, I will assume all AoOs are taken at the first opportunity, as usual.
Round 6:
Splashing. Clanging.
Round 7:
Clanging.
Eben MacTeague |
Okay, I don't actually know whether it's Carina or Tanith that has the CMW wand. SOMEONE USE IT.
Round 6: Eben once again gives Farrukh a pass with the dragon-carved wand.
UMD: 1d20 + 16 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 16 + 2 = 36
CSW: 3d8 + 5 ⇒ (6, 2, 1) + 5 = 14
It gives a last pitiful surge and then breaks. KC, I think you said it had 3 charges left after I accidentally healed myself, so that should be all of 'em. Tanith, that's item #23 on the loot sheet, if you could x it out when you get a chance.
Round 7: Eben lays a hand on Farrukh's back and says the familiar phrase: "I believe in you."
So at the end of round 7, mirror image on Eben, 6 images, 63 rounds. Heroism on Farrukh, lasts for 700 rounds. See invisibility still up for a bit. whip feather token still active for a bit. If I see an invisible drow step into the hall, I'll shout a warning and tell Farrukh & Tanith where they are (i.e., point out the square they're in.)
Tanith 'Kordson' Creed |
Carina we've got two turns. You should use that first one chugging a potion or something.
Tanith grabs the other healing wand from Carina and touches to her burned flesh.
CMW: 2d8 + 3 ⇒ (8, 3) + 3 = 14
Next turn:
And then himself.
CMW: 2d8 + 3 ⇒ (8, 4) + 3 = 15
Tanith 'Kordson' Creed |
Ah, that makes sense. We don't know when they're coming.
Dungeon Kobold |
To clarify, if you heal in the second round, you obviously don't get a readied attack. Like Tanith said, though, you don't know when they're coming—all you have is Eben's vague guess of "a few rounds".
Eben MacTeague |
Farrukh, we actually don't have any cure mod. potions. Just cure light.
Carina Viera |
Round 6: Actions
Full-Round Action: Use Necroturgon of False Life
Completely out of options, Carina pulls out the False Life necroturgon and injects herself with it...
Temporary HP Gain: 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9
+9 temporary HP for 3 hours or until discharged.
Round 7: Actions
Standard Action: Ready Action: Shoot the first drow that comes through the door
Carina then aims her crossbow at the door as the necroturgon's magic takes hold.
EDIT: Used Necroturgon of False Life instead of Barkskin potion. Turns out Farrukh already took it. P.S. Get Farrukh checked out to ensure there won't be any unpleasant side effects from the potion.
Dungeon Kobold |
We don't? What happened to those 16 we had? I didn't think we drank thek all.
Since when did you have 16 cure moderate wounds potions? Was this a purchase I missed?
Round 8: Drow.
Footsteps. Farrukh senses two forms rushing past him as two invisible figures rush into the hallway. A bolt flies under Eben's arm and skims Farrukh's chest before vanishing from sight with an "Ow!"
The two drow appear. These two are better-armored and wield masterwork rapiers. One stabs at Farrukh, while the other attempts to disarm him.
Attack (FF): 1d20 + 8 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 8 + 2 = 14
Disarm (FF): 1d20 + 10 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 10 + 2 = 18 Fails, but not by 10 or more.
Both attacks completely miss, though. These two drow seem completely outclassed, but show no signs of being aware of this fact.
Meanwhile, the party hears the other two drow rising from the water to stand upon the pillar.
Round 8: You are up!
Eben MacTeague |
Right, like KC pointed out, we had 16 potions of cure light wounds we've been accumulating since Whispering Cairn. I don't think we had moderate wounds potions at any point, and certainly not in any kind of abundance. You might be confusing the potions with the CMW wand which I think is our last remaining healing wand at this point.
"Drow! Right in front of you!" Eben rather redundantly points out to Farrukh a split second before the two warriors flicker into sight as they attack. "Oh, well, nevermind!" he says, gesturing to the floating whip over his head and pointint at the southernmost of the two drow. "Sic 'im!" he says, as he reaches over and plants a hand on Tanith's shoulder. "I believe in you, too!" he says, casting another spell.
feather whip: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (5) + 11 = 16
Probably a miss, but...
nonlethal damage: 1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
grapple: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (19) + 15 = 34
Round 8: standard: cast heroism on Tanith, spend my last AP to save the slot. Free action: direct whip feather token against drow #2. Free action: activate Dance of 23 Steps.
Mirror image on Eben, 6 images, 62 rounds. Heroism on Farrukh, lasts for 699 rounds. Heroism on Tanith lasts for 700 rounds. See invisibility still up for a bit. Eben's AC is 21/16/15 while Dance of 23 Steps is active.
Tanith 'Kordson' Creed |
Enjoying the familiar rush of Eben's magically inspired confidence, Tanith rears back with his poleaxe and cleaves into the nearer dark elf.
Chop (heroism): 1d20 + 10 + 2 - 2 ⇒ (16) + 10 + 2 - 2 = 26
Damage: 1d10 + 6 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 + 6 = 15
Dungeon Kobold |
Tanith hacks into the injured dark elf, who cries out in pain.
Eben's whip lashes out, but misses.
I only just realized you only have a +5 BAB. I guess I got used to seeing iterative attacks from your flurry.
