"I cannot leave this room. On the other hand, I can only read one of your intentions true. I have a mission here, and it is one that I must not fail. You have me at a disadvantage, as you have neither introduced yourselves, nor given me true reason to allow you through.
"Gaétan, I can read that you believe what you say, though if the Pathfinder Society is in turmoil, perhaps one of your companions is in league with Adril Hestram?
"I am tasked to guard, and while I am here, I will prevent any who seek harm to the Society from passing. I have only your word that what you say is true."
She looks Pathfinders, as if trying to make a decision.
Ralph Cauthorn |
"Geatan's thoughts should show you that we have pursued Adril Hestram even across worlds, seeking to stop his murder of other Decemvirate members and bring him to justice."
"If reading our thoughts directly is what is required to convince you, then I doubt any of us here will resist your attempts to read our thoughts, though I understand that it is not an ability that one can use at will. If you are in possession of any magics that will allow you to detect falsehood, we will not resist if you attempt to use it."
"Before you make your decision, however, consider this. Adril Hestram is loose in Skyreach, and in stalling us here, you may be putting Shemis in greater peril, for we are racing to reach her before he does. If however you show us the quickest way to reach her, you may help save her."
I doubt it will be that simple, but let us see how this goes first.
GM..Silbeg |
"So, you would allow me to read all of you minds? Without hesitation?" she asks.

"Very well..."" she looks directly at Ralph, and releases a burst of mental energy his way.
Ralph, please make a will save. You are welcome to choose to fail.
Ralph Cauthorn |
Ralph voluntarily fails, and mentally pushes to the forefront of his thoughts all his contempt for Adril Hestram and the Shadow Lodge, as well as the recent race to save and protect or avenge the Decemvirate.
"You will excuse me if I alleviate some of that pain, I trust," Ralph says once the probing is done, and taps himself with his wand of infernal healing.
GM..Silbeg |
pain for Ralph: 9d4 ⇒ (2, 2, 4, 3, 4, 2, 4, 2, 2) = 25
Ralph doubles over in pain as the effects of the copper sphinx hits him.. He feels her sifting through his mind. "Ralph Cauthorn, you are not a very nice person." she says after a few moments. "However, you are clearly on a mission, and do not let morals get in your way. I can see clearly that you see me as only an obstacle... one perhaps you avoid, but an obstacle nonetheless."
She ponders something for a moment. "It is the nature of the magic that I am unable to dismiss the symbol behind me, nor the glyph of warding that I am standing on. However, the latter may be bypassed by prominently displaying your wayfinder."
She has relaxed, and while not in a helpful mood, is not at least friendly. You think that she would be willing to grant you a request, if asked nicely.
She stands, head cocked slightly, waiting.

"Oh, well that's easy enough!" the halfling exclaims. With an expert twist of his hand, he flips his wayfinder in the air from his belt pouch and catches it facing Andrexiel. "If we've assuaged your concerns about our identities and mission, may we pass this hall and continue on to save the Decemvirate?"

Sorry for the silence; I had problems accessing my campaign tab... still do, but found a work around!
Koraq pulls his out of a breast pocket in his snakeskin tunic. "See, Ima Pathfinder, too. Anything else that would be a problem if we were to pass you besides the the symbol and glyph?"
GM..Silbeg |
She watches as Auris and Koraq both pull out their wayfinders. She then looks expectantly at Ralph and Géatan for theirs. "At this time, I see none. Though, again, you may want to disenchant the symbol."

Andrexiel nods at Auris, when he asks if her concerns were assuaged, and waits patiently for Ralph.

"Sound advice as any," Ralph replies as he eyes the symbol from his current location and prepares to dispel it.

Ralph is able to dispel the magical symbol.
She filters through Ralph's memories, and then seems to find what she is looking for. "Ralph, you may want to make sure to prominently display your wayfinder before you step forward.
"All of you, I ask one more thing. I am going to cast detect lie. I will know if you are lying, or are resisting the spell, so please do neither. I will ask each of you, in turn, if you plan to do any harm to the Pathfinder Society or Shemis, and if you lie, know that your fate will be sealed."
She casts the spell, and asks each of you, "Do you plan to do any harm to the Pathfinder Society or Shemis?"
I am assuming you are not lying, but say what you are going to say..."

Auris hooks his thumbs into his belt. "I certainly don't mean any harm to Shemis or the Society. I aim to stop Adril by any means necessary."

"We do not plan to harm either Shemis or the Pathfinder Society. We are here to protect the integrity of the Society by ensuring its leaders are not replaced by imposters from the Shadow Lodge and to take down the traitor Adril Hestram once and for all."
GM..Silbeg |
"Thank you. Be careful on the stairway up, it encased in shadow on purpose." she says, beckoning you to pass.
Ralph can tell that the darkness is magical, and equivalent to deeper darkness. By the fact that he is staggered by the intensity of it, he realizes he probably cannot do anything to dispel it.
The team carefully makes their way up the stairway to the Observatory. Atop the stairs, the unnatural shadow disperses, emptying like a river of gray swirling fog into a tremendous, circular atrium. The fog collects along the perimeter of the room, hovering no more than a foot above the ground. The remainder of the oor is exposed. Its surface appears slick and glasslike. Light from below penetrates the translucent surface, giving off a faint, eerie glow. The walls too appear made of the same, glassy substance. They climb almost twenty feet, then curve inward into a shadowy metal dome. Pinholes of light twinkle on the surface of the dome ceiling, giving it the appearances of the night sky. A shifting array of scenes twist and dance across the surface of the murky windows, depicting scores of people and places in dozens of realms throughout Golarion.
Standing in the center of the room, staring into the walls, is a lone half-elven woman. Her face is covered with an ivory mask, featureless except for pale, pupil-less white orbs lined with jade where her eyes should be. Its surface is inlaid with complex patterns of runes and upon its left cheek rest three, blood-red, crystalline tears. Dozens of silver rings pierce the perimeter of the mask, and it is hooded with a bristling mane of peacock feathers. Beneath the mask, she wears a gown of peacock feathers, porcupine quills and shimmering plates of scintillating opalescent abalone.

Auris scans the room silently, studying the many images on the walls. That explains a lot. he thinks wryly. "Hey, Ralph, is that Hestram in disguise? Or did we somehow beat him here?"

Without turning, the woman says, "“Well Adril, you have found me at last. I see you have once again manipulated the members of the Society into performing your dirty work. I congratulate you on your ingenuity. Well played. Now that you’re here, you may as well reveal yourself to your pawns."
After speaking, Shemis falls silent. Seconds later, all the eraminho stones about the your heads fade to a dull gray color and fall to the floor. Ether spills from the stones and within moments, materializes in the form of Adril Hestram, replicated four times.
See picture on Slide #1 of the real Adril Hestram
Then the blue Adril Hestram speaks, "And so it begins, Shemis... Endgame." This Hestram quickly moves towards Shemis, drawing his massive earthbreaker, as the others draw theirs.

"I thought there was something off about the voice in the stone. Had your odour not been contained within the stone, the stench of a rat such as yourself would have been detected immediately."
Is the previous room with Andrexiel within range of a dimension door spell?
"Shemis, I believe we should go somewhere where the air is a little fresher. Shall we?"
Ralph flies to Shemis and casts dimension door, teleporting himself and her to Andrexiel. Using my bonded ring for this.
"Well, we technically reached Shemis before Adril Hestram, but he's up there now. Andrexiel, would you kindly watch over Shemis while I go back up there to cremate the traitor?"
GM..Silbeg |
The smoky gray floor is almost transparent, but no amount of looking through it provides any insight into what forms may be below. The walls, however, clearly display scenes of Pathfinders throughout Golarion, completing missions in Irrisen and the Mwangi Expanse, resting in Lodges from Magnimar to Goka, and some sitting amid stacks of books in the great libraries of the world. One scene even depicts yourselves as they move about this very chamber.
Also, you know that all of the Adril Hestrims have acted, so are not flatfooted. Finally, the act would require her to be willing.
"Ralph, I have seen what you would do, but I cannot leave this place." says Shemis, calmly, without shifting her gaze. I am tied to this place, for good or ill. I have seen many ends, and I accept what is to come."
The Hestrim next to her grips his earthbreaker a little harder.

"If you've seen that, then I suppose you also know that I always have a backup plan, as well as what this backup plan is," Ralph replies.
I have been consistently activating my ring of invis at regular intervals throughout the game, and though I didn't get a chance to say it before we were moved on to this room, I assume I would have kept doing so.
Ralph flies further into the room and to an elevation of 20ft (or as high as he can get leaving 5ft of space between himself and the ceiling). Move action.
Using his bonded ring, he quickly conjures a cloud of fog, just enough to conceal Shemis from her attcker momentarily. Swift action quickened fog cloud. I am putting Shemis at the edge of the fog so she only has concealment from me, which is still enough to target her with a spell, and also concealment from her attacker so her movement does not provoke.
"I'd wanted to save this spell for Koraq, but this works just as well," he mutters as he casts his telekinetic charge spell and uses it to pull Shemis to the space right above him. Standard action, and since this is my last action this should end my turn. If she really wants to she can also attack me with a +2 bonus as an immediate action.
Just as Shemis is about to fall on him, Ralph conjures an emergency force sphere, creating a platform for Shemis to land on. Immediate action. Since my turn has ended, this is cast between my turns and takes up my swift action for my next turn.
The quickened fog is the least essential of the actions. If you rule that I need to cast the emergency force sphere during my turn to stop Shemis's fall then I will skip the fog. My turn should end with Shemis standing on the top of my emergency force sphere just under the ceiling of the room or 20ft above the floor whichever is higher.

What is a "Pathfinder prestige attack"? Sorry, really confused here... holding for explanation. Also, I assume the extra 1d6 is fire damage?
For this to work, I am going to have say that you have to do the Emergency Force Shield on your turn. If you want, she will have already fallen to the floor.

He hits her very hard, and it is apparent that she is bleeding from the attack. She looks to be about ready to collapse, in fact.
Then, the yellow Adril moves to flank Koraq. He manages to miss Koraq, twice, probably only because he was swinging for the fences. However, Koraq is not looking good.

GM, I am not concerned about the winged boots as I still have tricks up my sleeve. But is the ceiling made of stone?
And does blue survive Geatan's bombardment?
Ralph Cauthorn |
"Stay on the ground like the worm you are!"
fly check to hover: 1d20 + 7 + 13 ⇒ (15) + 7 + 13 = 35
With an imperious wave, Ralph floats a little further from Adril and uses his bonded ring to target Adril's boots with a targeted quickened dispel magic. 5ft step down, elevation 15ft + swift action.
dispel check: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (17) + 13 = 30
all magical properties of boots deactivated for this many rounds: 1d4 ⇒ 4
Since the boots don't cast the fly spell on him per se, this should cause him to fall.
Ralph then watches Adril carefully to see what he tries next.
Readied action to cast pilfering hand on Adril if he makes any kind of attack on an ally.
The tactical necessity this round is dispelling the boots. If that fails for any reason, I will take another standard action instead of readying.
Ralph Cauthorn |
Changing my standard action. I won't need to take a 5ft step since I am still invisible before I cast dispel magic. If my first dispel succeeds in putting Adril on the ground, I will instead fly to Shemis' side (to the spot that Adril fell from) and then cast solid fog to obscure Shemis. I will center the fog on her so that it does not extend to the ground. This should leave Adril at ground level while Shemis is 25ft in the air surrounded by solid fog.
"Shemis is under my protection. You will not touch her again," Ralph sneers as he conjures a thick viscous mist to obscure himself and Shemis.
I should also point out that unless he makes a spellcraft check, he has no reason to think that the fog will block any ranged attack he has.
GM..Silbeg |
With the Emergency Force Shield around you, how are you targeting anything above you? Adril is at 25', level with Shemis, above the shield...
Effect 5-ft.-radius hemisphere of force centered on you
GM..Silbeg |
For expediency, I am going to with the force shield is stationary once created, much like a wall of force. On the winged boots it is "as if affected by a fly spell", so if dispelled, he will float down. However, this ends up being moot, but not by much...
On the third shot by the archer, the blue Adril Hestram collapses, and starts floating down the ground. He then fires at the red Hestram, but misses.
Since Koraq isn't able to join in properly, and Ralph can change his action, I am going to call the combat with only one doppleganger left

I have always assumed the bottom of the hemisphere is not sealed. If it is, Ralph will dismiss the sphere and then cast featherfall as an immediate action.
Edit: Ah I see the issue. In that case Ralph would have moved before dispelling the boots. Anyway, the point is moot now. If blue is unconscious, Ralph will instead simply wait till the last doppelganger is defeated and then dismiss the force sphere and cast feather fall to bring Shemis down.
Once we are both on the ground, I assume Auris will start healing Shemis. Ralph will refrain from using his slightly more sinister wand.
"Considering the way we entered Skyreach, I assume we will need dimensional travel to leave this place. Once we are out, however, I have a dimensional anchor spell I will cast on him."
"There are alternatives, of course. Due to the little dance that I had to do with Hestram and Shemis, I did not have the time to bring my more potent spells to the fray. I still have spells I can cast to make Adril Hestram's death... difficult to reverse. Summoning a succubus to drain all his life force will impede any attempts to raise him, and I can turn his soul into a soul gem to further frustrate the process. This has the advantage of alerting the Decemvirate if he is ever revived, since the gem would crack in such an event."
Ralph notices the dirty looks he is getting.
"This is of course, all academic. I find that usually the best way to keep someone sealed permanently is a temporal stasis spell, since that prevents the target from being revived in a remote location. That unfortunately is a spell even I have not yet mastered, but give me a year or so and I should be able to provide that service."
