"Good, I will help you scotty."

Ralph Cauthorn |
Here a summary of the potential plan:
1. Ralph casts invisibility on Koraq, then activates his own ring of invisibility.
2. Koraq takes Red Raven's dimension-door-cloak and uses it to get close to the fop with the ridiculous hat. Meanwhile, Ralph flies down to where Raven and Blondie are held.
3. Scotty does his talking.
4. Depending on how Scotty's talking goes, Ralph will d-door with Raven and Blondie to the chapel, and Koraq may or may not break invisibility to lay smack-down on foppy.
Anyone have any changes they want to make to the plan?
Koraq Dragonclaw |
heck, why don't I just dress as the Red Raven and pick off foppy when/if it is needed. Helps the Real Red Raven as this Aric persona won't be associated with him and might convince the crowd more that the misguided foppy is a bad guy if the Raven attacks.

Ralph Cauthorn |
It could work, but your disguise and bluff modifiers are't great, and if you're found out it might backfire. I can't recommend it, but if you want to try it I won't stop you. Will make you invisible anyway.
Géatan Émond |
Yep me too. That probably the reason why he is been captured. A secret identity is secret.
-Posted with Wayfinder
Ralph Cauthorn |
How about I get him out of there first, then we ask him about revealing his identity? In the history of comic books, vigilantes who maintain secret identities usually resent having their identities revealed, and a vigilante having his or her secret identity exposed rarely ends well. Looking at you, spiderman. I think if Red Raven wanted to reveal his identity to save himself, he would have already done it.
Most of all, I don't want to have to hear him cry afterwards about how we revealed his identity, even if it is to save him.
Géatan Émond |
again, I did not read scotty post as it was actually written. Let's just return at shaming the mob or tell them there no password anymore because if the Red Raven
Scotty McBride |
How are the citizens crowding around the guillotine clothed? Are they dressed similarly to the man with the scroll or are they in commoner's clothing? Is there someone posted up ready to activate the guillotine?
Koraq Dragonclaw |
Alright, I'll just go for invisibility. Alternatively, I could sunder the guillotine to break it instead of just popping Foofy. Otherwise, I'm good with whatever else the party is up for.
Ralph Cauthorn |
Once I transport Raven and Blondie away, we won't need to worry about the guillotine. If there's any trouble, it will probably come from Foofy.
Is the cloak in the temple Red Raven's dimension-door cloak?
Géatan Émond |
"Let's just go. He is gonna... Meet this blade if we don't hurry. You elaborate the detail of the plan while we reach the guillotine."
Gaétan starts to walk.

Ralph Cauthorn |
2 uses should be more than enough. One to get Koraq into position and one to get him out if he needs to retreat.
"Geatan, you will be best positioned in here where you can use your bow from cover, and if you reveal yourself before I extract Raven and Blondie, you could well jeopardise the whole operation. Just wait here till you see a commotion."
"Koraq, you should find this cloak useful in getting close to Foofy."
"Whatever any of you plan to do, don't do it or reveal your presence until you see Raven and Blondie disappear from the guillotine."
If no one else has anything to add, Ralph will cast invisibility on Koraq (I'll have to use spell study for this since I didn't have it memorised), then reactivate his ring of invisibility to refresh the duration of his own invisibility. Then he will cast detect magic and concentrate on the spell while he flies over to where Raven and Blondie are held, by the guillotine. Once there, he will shift the aoe cone over Raven and Blondie and concentrate for three rounds to make sure that there are no medium abjuration auras on either of them that might block his dimensional travel. He will be hovering in the air above them whilst he does this.
If he gets there without incident and does not detect any dimension-travel-blocking magic on them, he will use his bonded item to cast dimension door while touching both Raven and Blondie and transport all three of them back to the chapel.
Let's see if that all goes according to plan. Whilst Ralph checks for dimension-blocking magic, Koraq should have time to get into position. If there are any interruptions whilst Ralph is concentrating, he will just drop down to Raven and Blondie (with feather fall) and go for the dimension-door straight away.
Koraq Dragonclaw |
Sounds good
"Heh, I'm gonna feel like a wizard now.", Koraq donning the red cape. "Well, I'm ready to do my part to save the day."
Scotty McBride |
"I am concerned that this crowd is out for blood. Just taking the Red Raven may incite a riot. We should keep that as our backup plan. Let me try to turn the crowd against Foofy first. Otherwise, I like the plan."

"I am concerned that this crowd is out for blood. Just taking the Red Raven may incite a riot. We should keep that as our backup plan. Let me try to turn the crowd against Foofy first. Otherwise, I like the plan."
"I'm inclined to think that if they riot they will only have Foofy to riot against, and if that happens the only ones who will end up getting hurt is the mob itself. But I suppose that is what you want to avoid..."
"Alright, but give Scotty and I half a minute to get into position first. Your appearance could also fast-track the order to drop the guillotine blade. I want to be next to Raven and Blondie if that happens."
Slight change to the plan: Ralph will hover just above Raven and Blondie after scanning them for magic, and wait for Scotty's speech. 5 rounds should be enough for Koraq to get into position and for Ralph to scan them with detect magic for 3 rounds. After flying down to Red Raven, I'll ready an action to cast dimension door if any hostilities occur. Hostilities including any order to execute Raven.
GM Mars |
You guys will have no problems getting Koraq and Ralph into position with that plan.
Things that show up under detect magic:
- The woman's ring of protection +1, amulet of natural armor +1, and bracers of armor +4
- Alric's ring of protection +2
- One of the gray gardener's +2 half-plate, ring of protection +1, amulet of natural armor +1, and +1 halberd
- The guillotine, which will require an actual Spellcraft roll.
Ralph Cauthorn |
Only thing I'm interested in is whether there is anything that will block my dimension-door attempt. But I won't turn down extra info.
spellcraft: 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (15) + 23 = 38
Scotty, go ahead and do what you want to do. Assuming Ralph finds nothing that might block his dimension-door, he will wait by the captives and ready an action to cast dimension door at the first sign of hostilities against himself, Raven or Blondie.
GM Mars |
More info about Final Blades (including a picture!)
I know you only wanted to know about dimensional travel, but you weren't going to be sure about that without ID'ing what exactly the Final Blade did - so I might as well give you the full info there too. This one looks weaker than a standard blade in that it has hardness 5/20 hp. It has no special defenses besides what's linked there.

Scotty McBride |
I thought I posted something here on Friday moving stuff along. I don't know why it isn't here anymore.
The tldr is Scotty asks Geatan to cover the release mechanism for the guillotine as an extra redundancy. I think his appearance may become important to how he wants to approach the situation so I'll describe it here:
Scotty gives Ralph and Koraq whatever time they need to get in position unless the situation develops and he feels he needs to intervene. When he feels they have had the time they need, he calmly walks out of the temple, faces the crowd, and shouts at the top of his lungs.
"WHAT IN THE NAME OF ALL THE GODS IS GOING ON HERE!?"
Edit: If Scotty can get into a position where he can scan the crowd/Foofy for evil, he does so. His main interest for that is Foofy.
GM Mars |
No one, including Foofy, pings as evil.
The Judge looks down at Scotty, scoffing.
"Alric of Halvon has not been acting in the good faith of Galt. He's been hoarding wealth and material possessions, not sharing them with the good people of Galt! If he wishes to continue living, then he must reliquinsh what he has unrightfully took and return it to the people of Galt!"
Various commoners cheer.
Ralph Cauthorn |
I wonder what is in the keep that is so important to Red Raven that he would rather die than let the commoners in. I thought he was supposed to be a people's champion or some bull like that.
Scotty, it might be a good idea to ask Alric for his side of things.
Koraq Dragonclaw |
Well, I guess he doesn't want to ruin the image of the Red Raven; despite how we feel about the persona, he is a local hero. Perhaps pride or hubris.
Scotty McBride |
GM, can you please let me know if/when/how the raven and/or his lady friend react to what I am saying?
Scotty calmly walks towards the crowd as he speaks, focusing his gaze on Foofy.
Scotty wants to get close enough that the crowd can feel his auras and clearly see his holy symbol. If possible, he will work his way towards the guillotine to stand adjacent to it as he speaks. He will not force his way through the crowd if confronted.
"A man in battle worn armor who surrendered and laid his head on the block rather than harm a citizen of Galt is not acting in their best interest? I have seen this man fight, you did not subdue him. He is on that block willingly. Surely though that is the caliber of man who would steal from the good people of Galt; a man who garbs himself in lavish clothing to separate himself from the common man rather than fighting on the front lines to protect his people. That is a man who would stand above the common man making decrees by 'his authority' rather than by the authority of the people, the true rulers of Galt."
Scotty gestures towards the commoners gathered around the guillotine, looking them in the eyes as he addresses them.
"So let us ask the true rulers. Citizens! Is the man before you guilty of the crimes I have described? Has he placed himself above you in lavish garb claiming to have more authority than you, the people? Has he failed to take up arms and defend you when you are threatened? If so, then I can not deny that this man is your enemy, for anyone who acts as such has truly been corrupted by the evils of nobility and is no rightful friend of Galt."
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (16) + 21 = 37
Edit:Ralph, Scotty is not disregarding your advice about getting Alric's side of the story. Scotty is concerned that if he does not turn the crowd in favor of Alric or at least against Foofy then Alric's testimony might fall on deaf ears.
Géatan Émond |
It feel like I have being waiting for this for more than a week. Strange. Perhaps, it was my anticipation. thinks Gaétan while observing.

GM Mars |
Adric looked slightly frustrated to see you, but relaxed when he saw you were here to talk down the crowd. His lady friend looks intrigued by your presence, and is relieved that you appear to be interrupting their execution.
The judge waits for Scotty to finish, then starts going in on a tide of his own. "Well maybe if you were here to see the whole thing, you'd understand why he was in the blade right now. These two clearly inherited this manor, which clearly means that they're trying to keep up the aristocracy!"
Id give an opposed Diplo check, but he can't beat your roll.
The crowd seems certainly more in Scottys favor, as they find the response from the judge a little less adequate than they did before..
Scotty McBride |
"You name them enemies of Galt because they inherited a BUILDING? Is this not the tyrannical madness the revolution sought to end? Have these people even been given a chance to speak in their defense before you threatened them with execution? Take them off off the block and let them speak in their defense. Or has the revolution done nothing but replace old tyrants with new ones?"
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (16) + 21 = 37
If Scotty is successful in getting them off of the block, he adds (addressing the crowd) "Will the people permit counsel for the accused? If so, will the people and the accused accept me as arbitrator with my sworn word before the people and the Gods that I seek justice for all parties?"
GM Mars |
I will confirm that part, unless you tried to push yourself further. Honestly, you probably could've walked up about halfway at this point.
Thought I was going to have time to respond tonight - but I kinda collapsed for most of the day, and I don't want to give a half-assed response to that. Will be posting tomorrow (hopefully earlier than I usually do).
Scotty McBride |
Scotty wants to get next to the guillotine of possible but he isn't going to force his way past anyone if blocked or challenged. The idea is to let as many people as possible feel his auras and figure out that he is a paladin as well as get to a position where he can support Ralph and/or protect the Raven. He might politely gesture or insinuate that he wants to move past while he is talking but won't force the issue.
GM Mars |
Actually, scratch what I said about walking up halfway – you’re previous speech would’ve gotten up to the guillotine if you wanted – feel free to move your mini up to there with or without horse.
The mob at this point is yelling “Let him speak! Let him speak!” The Gray Gardeners are looking at each other with a quizzical look. #1 starts loosening the guillotine.
The judge looks around and opens his mouth as if to say something, but realizes that Scotty is just too skilled at manipulating the crowd and that he isn’t getting them back. (I still can’t beat a 37 Diplo) With his face turning red, he starts yelling out “Who do you think you are? You think you can just come into my court and interfere with my decisions? Get out you ferocious interloper!”

A couple notes about the scene:
The mob are allied with you. Feel free to move through their squares, and they will get out of your way if you want to move somewhere else. On their first turn, they’re all going to double move book it out of the way through the gate unless you do something to stop them.
The Gray Gardeners are neither your allies nor your enemies. They’ll be holding their action and waiting unless you do something to attack them.
The judge is furious and looks like he’s getting ready to cast a spell.
I believe Ralph had a readied action to dim door the two away, which you can take now. They will go with you willingly. Everyone else can move to where you would be before the combat began.
So yeah, with Scotty’s last response it was pretty clear that I didn’t have as much of a handle on the motivations of this scene, so I spent some time when I was more awake rereading the scenario and trying to think about the motivations of everyone. The problem is, this scene is not as detailed as the others because it presumes that you’re going to just get into combat – especially since the Cheliax faction mission is “summon an ice devil that goes up and breaks the guillotine”.
I spent some time looking at it back and forth today, and the best I can get is that this guy is an opportunist who uses his control of the mob for personal benefit. Which means that while you may have given the Gray Gardeners pause for thought, you’ve just pissed him off. Which means that this is combat, but probably the easiest combat you could’ve fought here.
Géatan Émond |
Gaétan notices at far that Scotty could have trouble. But Ralph's words is still in his mind.
Act when you see a commotion... Is it?. It is not at this level. Better not act for now. I will give that"judge" an excuse to use the mob against us or activate the guillautine better act after the first act of violence
Delay.

Scotty McBride |
Both Scotty and I immediately interpreted Foofy as an opportunist so if that was the intention then well done on bringing that across. If not for that, Scotty may have tried to handle the situation differently.
Assuming speech is still a free action taken out of initiative: "You leave me no choice. I place these people under Sarenrae's protection until I am satisfied they have been given fair trial. TAKE THEM NOW!
Scotty will thank Ralph later for his dramatic timing.
Scotty McBride |
If the GM will continue to indulge me:
On Scotty's initiative he draws his scimitar and sets light to the holy fire.
He shouts: "Grey Gardeners, we mean no harm to the good people of Galt! Allow us to subdue this traitor to your ideals and surrender him to your custody to be judged by the people. There is no need for conflict and even less for bloodshed!
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 21 ⇒ (3) + 21 = 24
Assuming that fails to sway them: "Subdue them! There is no need for bloodshed! People of Galt, stand far away so we do not inadvertently bring you to harm!"
Scotty will defensively cast (if threatened) the summoning ritual for his mount (Who I presume couldn't be brought through the passage up to the temple else he simply calls her to his side.).
Edit: Realised a Scotty acts before any foes so no reason to be defensive with the spell. Still need the GM to fill me in on if she made it up to the temple.
Ralph Cauthorn |
Ralph will indeed take his readied action. The destination will be the roof of the chapel, so that we are away from the crowd and guillotine but still have a vantage point of the scene below.
"It's me, Alric. We're on your side this time," Ralph whispers hurriedly as he places a hand on Raven and Blondie. "Come with me if you want to live."
Ralph Cauthorn |
Slight change of plan. Will dimension-door them to the roof of the keep itself, out of line of sight of Foofy. Just in case he has nasty surprises up his sleeve.
"Stay here till the fighting's over. We don't know what that fop in the ridiculous hat can do, but I bet you're his prime targets."
GM Mars |
Ralph teleports Adric and the girl to safety.
Scotty summons his horse next to him.
Géatan waits for an offensive action.
The Gray Gardeners wait for an offensive action.
The Mob, sensing that something is going down, gets out of there.
The Judge calls out "This is my court, and my court will always obey me!" He then casts a spell, and one of the crates (medium), the wheelbarrow the final blade was perched on (large), and the box the final blade came in (huge) all start moving.
The objects double move closer to Scotty.

It looks like Scotty is being attacked from all sides. Intervention will be a good idea.
spellcraft: 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (8) + 23 = 31
Ralph easily identifies the spell that Foofy cast, though the effects of the spell are quite obvious anyway.
GM, are the Gray Gardeners attacking or are they just standing by?
Do they have their weapons drawn?
Did Foofy use a holy symbol when he cast his spell? Interested because it will give me a clue about his saves.
