Miko Teppen |
Miko speaks Aklo, for the record.
GM Kyshkumen |
Khismia aid: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (20) + 3 = 23
After 2d6 ⇒ (2, 3) = 5 hours and working with Khismia's help along with a guadiance spell from Tuich, Miko is able to read the notes.
The notes say that the five who toiled here believed
the chamber to the north, this “Sunless Grove,” was a site
used by the Old Cults in ancient times to contact entities
of the Dark Tapestry. This group of five, calling themselves the "Keepers of the Oldest," hoped that by opening this portal anew using rituals they found in a book called the Pnakotic Manuscripts they would be able to learn potent secrets of magic and more from those on the far side of the portal.
Miko Teppen |
Fools, all of them. What do they hope to gain by soliciting the aid by stirring beings that old. Momentary gain of power? From creatures with infinite patience, or a mind driven insane by lack thereof? On their timescale, we must be no more than an itch, there one second, forgotten the next.
Miko Teppen |
From the map, it looks like we missed a room. Shall we go there, then see if this hole goes any deeper?
GM Kyshkumen |
Going to give you a recap since there was a lot of stuff thrown at you. From the notes and books you know that five people were attempting to open a portal down here. Then something seems to have killed two people down here before heading up and bursting through the house on the surface, killing more people. From what you saw of the creatures trail it did not come back down here. You also have the strange book from the alter to go through if you wish, but doing so is going to take more time and you have already spent 5 hours down here.
Vyk Tyr |
I say we hit the area we missed. Don't really like the idea of lraving something behind us.
Jeffrey Warren |
Jeffrey gets off his behind when someone mentions the door the party passed a while ago. "Alright then, let's go there."
He walks over to the door, waits for everyone else to join him while drawing his longsword again, and attempts to kick the door in.
Str: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
Aaaaand again.
Str: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24
Vincent Blackwood |
Vincent looks slightly disappointed that the ghoul didn't come back to try to fight again during the time it took to look over the book. He follows Jeffrey to the door and hefts his sword.
GM Kyshkumen |
Jeffrey tries kicking the door and painfully discovers that it is blocked on the other side. Changing tactics he puts his shoulder to the door and manages to slowly push it open, clearing the rubble that was blocking it from the other side.
The walls of this long chamber are of brick, the ceiling supported by stone arches. Remnants of bedrolls and other camping equipment lie along the southern wall.
Miko Teppen |
More bedrolls, looks like we had a genuine community down here. Miko says, trying to count the number of sleepers the undergound area harbored.
I'm pretty tired after all that dark reading. We could try and give that last book a go, but don't blame me if I blow a gasket and start babbling gobbledygook.
тυιcн |
"Sorry I can't help," Tuich says. "All that writing looks like 'gobbledygook' to me."
No Linguistics here.
Vyk Tyr |
"Me neither. Sorry, Miko," says Vyk before he gives the camp a once over.
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16
GM Kyshkumen |
I may have forgotten to update the map earlier. There is another door out of this room.
-Posted with Wayfinder
Miko Teppen |
Gobble-dy-gobble-y. G!#%-g$+&! Miko says, G~$+y-gobble.
Miko waits for one of the front-liners to open the door.
Edit: what? G*~& is a swear word?
Vyk Tyr |
Vyk moves forward to open the door.
Sorry, meant to post last night but forgot to.
Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18
Vyk Tyr |
"Something's blocking the door. Someone give me a hand here," said Vyk before he started to push.
Strength: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 1 = 20
Welcome to the gun show!
Jeffrey Warren |
"I'm already pushing, Vyk..."
I already attempted to open the door with a total of 24 on Strength. Is it possible to count Vyk's roll as an aid to mine?
Vincent Blackwood |
Vincent speaks up from where he's fishing through his pack. "Perhaps if I apply pressure with this crowbar from the side as you push..."
Aid other: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13
Plus another +2 from a crowbar being used in the check now.
Miko Teppen |
Waiting for the door to give in, Miko sings a song about racial diversity.
Never be rude to a Devil
A Demon, Kyton or Div
Never be rude to a Rakshasa
No matter what you do
Never poke fun at a sulphie
a brimsmear, a gear-head or 'loth
and never poke fun...
тυιcн |
Tuich stands to the side, watching and trying to think of something she can do to help.
I got nothin'...
-Posted with Wayfinder
GM Kyshkumen |
That was the first door Jeffery, which you already opened on your own. Pretty sure you'll get 10 so we will just keep things moving along.
With Vyk pushing and Jeffrey and Vincent helping they manage to push the rubble aside. Mounds of rubble line the walls of this partially collapsed chamber, but here and there patches of brickwork are visible
on the floor and walls. One rounded alcove remains in the northern wall, though it lacks a sarcophagus.
Blue: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (9) + 12 = 21
Yellow: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (8) + 12 = 20

Miko: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (8) + 5 = 13
Vyk: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14
Vincent: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (10) + 11 = 21
Jeffrey: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 = 13
Tuich: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Vincent Blackwood |
Vincent quickly steps in front of the others, holding his blade across his body in a defensive stance. "Take care!" he calls to the others, "There's a creature hiding in the rubble."
If not immediately attacked, Vincent will call out in front of himself in every language that he knows (Common, common, and Taldan. Oh right, that's common), "Well, a monster would have attacked by now. Seeing as I haven't and you haven't yet, perhaps we should talk instead, yes?"
If this counts as a surprise round, Vincent is 5-ft stepping in front of the others and taking the Total Defense action.
It's also possible I don't have my sword out, since I would have been holding a crowbar at the time that the door was opened. In that case, please mentally substitute "crowbar" for the word "blade" in that post. I'll switch to a sword in the event that the creature is hostile and I need to stab it.
I have a vague suspicion that we've found an innocent bystander who might be able to give us some information. Vincent is high Wis so he'd be attempting to put together clues right now. Monsters that are going to kill us don't typically barricade the doors first.
Khismia al-Khair |
Khismia looked her friends from behind.
I am still sketchy in my appearance, every time I check I have no ideas, how to contribute. Next week I will return to office and will work regular hours, checking threads more often
GM Kyshkumen |
Not to much going on so far other then gathering clues, I'll try and put recaps up to keep things fresh in everyone's mind. We'll be happy to have to back to regular hours next week as we are just starting combat.
Khismia: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21
Miko: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

Tuich: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7

Vincent steps into the room and starts talking, half way through his first sentence all the lights go out, plunging the room in total darkness.

Round 1
Vyk
Khismia
Vincent (-9)
Jeffrey
Tuich
Rag men
Miko
That was a surprise round so Vincent you are holding your crowbar as you stated. Everyone else is blind in the darkness except Vyk.
Vincent Blackwood |
I have no idea what to write half the time either. Don't worry about it. Also, it's too bad total defense granted a dodge bonus. I really should look into getting dark vision somehow.
Fort: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14 Failing by 1 is so depressing.
I'll decide my actions once Vyk and Khismia have gone at least.
Jeffrey Warren |
"Vyk, do you see what's going on?!" Jeffrey calls out when his vision disappears.
Clueless of what else to do in the dark, Jeffrey goes total defense.
+6 Dodge Bonus (3 ranks in Acrobatics)
Vyk Tyr |
"It's these weird rag-men creatures! Hold on, Vin, I got a stupid idea!"
Vyk backs up a step and dives past Vincent to distract all the rag-men.
"Dynamic entry!"
Acrobatics: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (2) + 6 = 8
I would provoke AOO from yellow and blue, unless I rolled high enough in acrobatics -- which I'm pretty sure I didn't.
After AOO-fest 2016...
Vyk scowls and then brings up his scimitar to attack one of the rag-men.
+1 Scimitar vs. Blue: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13
Damage: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
Let's all take a moment to picture how cool that would have been, if the RNG didn't hate me.
Vincent Blackwood |
After Vyk enters the room, Vincent takes a step back to assess the dim situation. "I don't suppose you know if I should be using a particular sword on these?" Or is anything better than this crowbar?"
The aforementioned crowbar clatters to the floor as Vincent pulls out a vial of antitoxin and fumbles with the lid. "Can someone help me with this?
Delay until after Vyk. I can't actually 5-ft step in darkness due to the "half speed when you can't see" restriction. I also can't draw the antitoxin as part of my move action because it's not a weapon. So move action to move back out where it's bright (might as well go around the corner since I'm using an entire move action anyways), standard action is spent to draw the antitoxin, and I can't actually use it this round unless someone was to take it from me and then administer it, preferably before the rag men go and I need to make another save.
Oh, action economy, we meet again.
Vyk, your action was pretty cool. Vincent probably got you all tangled up by not seeing you coming.
Khismia al-Khair |
- Goddess, let the power of life bind us together! We are ready to stand for our friend and sacrifice our blood if he needs help..., - Khismia chanted an old Qadiran prayer, but to her friends it sounded awkward.
Casting Life Pact. Everyone who is willing join in (I hope we all in)
Vincent, Khismia has quite good healing check, so if you say you need healing, I probably will grant you another +4 for next check.
GM Kyshkumen |
Vyk tries to tumble into the room, but blind Vincent manges to get in the way. Vyk draw a few attacks, but is nimble enough to avoid being hit.
AoO blue: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (13) + 6 = 19
AoO Yellow: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (14) + 6 = 20
Khismia casts a protective spell while Vincent steps back to be with the main group and Jeffrey tries to prepare for an attack he can't see.
Round 1

Khismia
Vincent (-9)
Jeffrey
Tuich
Rag men
Miko
Tuich is up
Vincent Blackwood |
Vincent, Khismia has quite good healing check, so if you say you need healing, I probably will grant you another +4 for next check.
Oh yeah, I forgot that the heal skill works for that too. I should have just used Heal on myself rather than draw the antitoxin. herpaderp.
тυιcн |
Sorry about going quiet for a little while, life threw me a couple of curves. I'm a little confused here, Tuich had her starknife glowing and I believe Vincent had Light cast on his pendant as well. Does "all the lights go out" imply magical Darkness at work here?
And if so I'm at a bit of a loss as to how Tuich can help, so Delay for the moment, I guess.
Oh... and I hate to be a spoilsport, especially when it has negative consequences for all of us, but that Life Pact requires a drop of blood previously collected from each pact member as a material component. I had to go through the whole negotiation and bloodletting thing for another PC I have, so as to be ready when it was needed. To me it makes sense it would've been brought up earlier and we all coordinated, so maybe we can just retcon that. Sorry, but I felt obligated to mention it.
That, or you can run around the room jabbing us with your dagger...
Vincent Blackwood |
Well, if you want to take the anti-toxin out of Vincent's hands and then administer it to him, that's a move action and a standard action.
Vincent would have been fine with Khismia previously having collected some of his blood, assuming she had explained at the time what it was for.
I've always thought that the Darkness spell probably looks really cool. Think about it. It's a point in space that RADIATES darkness. It's not a spread, so it doesn't go around walls or other solid obstacles. I've always wondered how a bunch of Darkness related corner cases work, too. I can take that to the discussion thread if anyone wants to discuss the the most physics defying low level spell.
GM Kyshkumen |
Great suggestion we will go with that as this seems to have stalled out a little.
Vincent calls out for help with his anti-toxin as Tuich manages to find the vial and help Vincent drink the contents.
Vyk finds himself surrounded as one of the ragmen cuts off his escape.

Fort save DC 17: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (4) + 6 = 10
Vyk feels himself grow weaker as he takes a few hits from the ragmen.
"Careful," he says with a cough. "These things are poisonous."
Vyk concentrates on a spell, but loses it as he coughs violently again.
Cast Defensively DC 17: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (1) + 14 = 15
RNGeezus, what did I ever do to you?... Lost a shield spell.
Enraged, Vyk swings his sword, hoping he'll connect.

- I will help you!, - said Khismia as she grabbed Vincent hand, - I know a lot about poisons... Now stand still
- For someone else later is better than never, - second voice appeared in her head.
Heal (treat poison): 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27 You get +4 competence bonus to your save now
Vincent Blackwood |
"Venomous, Vyk. Don't eat a frog because it's poisonous. Don't get bit because snakes are venomous." Vincent calls out, a little unsteady on his feet and apparently thinking that correcting word choice was important at this point in time.
Fort Save: 1d20 + 5 + 4 + 4 ⇒ (18) + 5 + 4 + 4 = 31
He shakes his head clear and grins at his companions next to him. "Thank you for the help. Now to prepare a counterattack."
Vincent incants a short prayer for Gorum to guide his blade, and then draws his adamantine greatsword.
I'm assuming I can tell that there's an enemy in the square directly northeast of Vincent based on the noise he creates while fighting. Free action talk, standard action to cast True Strike, move action draw weapon. I don't provoke for casting because I have hard cover from the doorway/wall/corner against melee attacks. He'll also have cover from me on my attack next round, but the +20 from True Strike should be enough to overcome that hopefully. I'm leaving the space directly in front of the door open for Jeffrey.
If you don't agree with me telling where he is for free, then Vincent would take a moment (move action) to perceive the enemy's location against a DC 0 for "sounds of combat," succeeding automatically since the enemy didn't actively use Stealth. Next round draw sword(during movement if necessary and then locate enemies based on where I get attacked from) and then attack. Either way, I plan on hitting something next round unless I roll a 1.
Vyk Tyr |
"Thanks for clearing that up, Vin," the tiefling says right before violently coughing again.
Miko Teppen |
Mik otries to help out by identifying the creatures and shouting out what she knows
K(religion): 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (15) + 12 = 27 Most other K skills are at +9
She then starts inspring courage
Hold on Vyk!

Jeffrey takes a 5-foot step forward, effectively blocking the doorway for the creatures. He then swings his longsword in the space directly north of him, hoping to connect to something.

I've never rolled a natural 100 before! O_O
GM Kyshkumen |
Miko does her best to inspire everyone. Vyk lands a hit on one and Jeffrey takes a swing in the dark and manages to hit one of the creatures as well. Vincent casts a spell and is ready to strike. With Khismia's help both Vincent and Vyk seem to be recovering from the poison.

Pretty sure that also misses. Well the good news is that the spell is still on the sword. The bad news is I'll probably be down before that matters.
Miko Teppen |
Somebody get him out of there! Miko says, almost screaming. She then continues her song, trying not to get in the way of the hard-hitters.
Vyk Tyr |
Forgot to add the +2 from Inspire Courage, GM. Hope that helps me out. Here's damage, just in case.

He swings his sword again, hoping to score a second hit on the creature.
