Nella glances around and then whispers to the group. "If we head into the Barracks it'll just be more of the same - and probably from people specialized in asking questions and ferreting out lies. We do not want to be there; it was hard enough talking our way past the gate."

"I think we need to try and find the brewery, like Masym suggests. It'll be safest and they're less likely to look for us there when and if they figure out that we never made it to the Barracks." Then she pauses. "But...I don't think any of us know the city or have a map, do we? Did Runa's journal mention more about how to get to the Merchant Quarter?"

Phoebee's information from earlier would lead you to assume the Merchant Quarter is in the central section of the city (its kind of southwestish of your current location)

If you want to try to locate the Brewery and skip the bureaucracy (probably advisable), that's fine (though you'll need to avoid the authorities with no papers).

I would like:
A Knowledge (local) roll from Phoebee and Masym.
A perception roll from everyone.
And two stealth roll from everyone.

He blanches when Nella hints at the interrogations that might happen in the barracks. "Uh. Yeah! Let's not go there, now that I think about it. The brewery sounds just fine."

He continues to glower at Phoebee.

I don't need to wait for Nella's rolls... enough of you rolled poorly =)

After a quick conversation, you decide to avoid the risk of a possible search, and more thorough questioning, in the Iron Barracks... especially Nella, carrying an instant death sentence concealed in her pack. Instead, you take advantage of the guard's laxness, and head out into the unfamiliar city... without any paperwork legitimizing your presence and not entirely certain how to get to where you're trying to go.

Despite night falling, the city seems to have a surprising amount of activity. Unfortunately, much of it is not human and none of it is friendly. You do your best to avoid any interactions, but it is difficult in the unfamiliar terrain, and sometimes you're sure your footsteps are ringing out, in the icy evening air, like sword blows.

At one point, after a quick warning from Jones, you duck into an alley just as a huge form lumbers around a nearby corner. It has to be at least fifteen feet tall! A massive humanoid with frost-white skin moves past dwarfing the entire street. You've never seen a giant before, certainly not this close. It pauses briefly, its eyes staring balefully down the alley you're hidden in, before moving on.

There is an audible exhalation of breath as it wanders off.

You try to be even more careful from there on... but unfamiliar shadows lurk around every corner. At one point, you're almost certain you're being followed... more aptly: stalked. Though try as you might, no one can spot whoever... or whatever... it is. Not longer thereafter, you hear screams of terror and vicious snarling down a side street, but wisely move on as the screams snuff out as quickly as they started.

Eventually, Masym is able to make out a few street names that coincide with some of the directions in Runa's journal, and you think you've reached Market Square. You now have enough local references to find the Brewery (its the star thing on the city map)

Unfortunately, this is where your luck runs out. You hear the sound of metal-shod feet hurrying up behind you, and before you can duck out of sight, three guardsman appear around a nearby corner.

"There, they are!"
"Drop your weapons!"

All three are wearing the spiked metal armor of the Iron guard. One of them fires a crossbow at Jones, not even waiting for you to comply to the shouted order. Only Jones' armor protects him from getting skewered, as the bolt glances off his breastplate. The guard then tosses the crossbow aside and moves forward, drawing her sword.

They apparently intend to ask questions later.

And we were so close!

With a flick of her wrist Nella feels her wand of blessings drop into her hand. She raises it high and waves it in an arc to encompass the party.

"Quick, we have to take them down before we draw more attention," she hisses as she moves to get out of the line of arrow and bolt fire.

Nella uses her wand of Bless (41 charges left) and then hustles toward the alley just north of Masym.

Phoebee starts up an inspiring song, and her voice rings out through the night like a clarion call.

While Wei Tchak casts a protective spell on himself, Masym moves forward to cut off the advancing guards and Jones returns fire at the woman who tried to shoot at him. His shot proves far more accurate, and she staggers from the wound.

Malusha readies his crossbow to return fire as well, while Nella uses her wand once more, blessing her companions' aim.

The guards quickly move in.

"Looks like the vermin intends to fight!" A second guard says, also a woman. She lets out a cry of battle as she charges across the intervening space, closing with Jones and taking a mighty swing like she's chopping wood. (5 damage to Jones)

The first woman approaches a little more cautiously, blood streaming down her side, her shield moving into place as she goes, and stabs viciously at Masym. (9 damage to Masym)

Ha, my power attack did less damage then my regular attack =)

The last guard, apparently the man in charge, approaches at a more leisurely pace, relishing the sight of battle.

"Would seem we get to show this lot what happens to scurf who are not supposed to be here." He says, his voice full of menace, as he performs a small display with his weapon, the sword cutting through the air in wide arcs. "Don't worry, we always appreciate it when they resist."

After the spell ends, it can act normally. On the creature's next turn, it may attempt a new saving throw to end the effect. This is a full round action that does not provoke attacks of opportunity. And finally, Phoebee decides to go old school, calling on the words of Saint Ives but filtered through the Lense of Wizzleteats, to twist them in unnatural ways. Her attention focused on deflecting Wei Tchak's blade, the guard is unprepared for Jones' kick as she gets to her feet. The boot lands with a dull thud, but she still manages to get her legs under her and step back.

GM Screen:
Reflex: 1d20 ⇒ 18

Nella says a prayer to her goddess and targets her as she tries to back out, causing her sword to suddenly glow red hot! With a startled curse, the woman drops it before it can do any lasting damage, and it quickly starts to melt into the densely-packed snow on the icy street with a soft hiss.

Malusha again tries to fire into the chaotic melee before him at the other guard, but continues to have no luck with his aim. Phoebee then steps in and swings her shiny new glaive at the same guard, but the woman is well-trained, and manages to deflect the blow with her shield. Masym harries her as well, taking advantage of his position to cut deeply into her side, though she remains standing, a grim look on her face. Tchak also slashes at her, but she continues to defend herself, deflecting his blows.

The one that stood actually stepped back, so you couldn't attack her, so directed it against the one you flanked with Masym. If you do want to dog the blue one, you'll have to 5' up. Either way, you miss!

Jones fires at the guard right next to him but, though she lost her sword, she is in no way unarmed as she lashes out at him with one spiked elbow which comes dangerously close to skewering the man. Luckily his armor once again proves effective and he gets the shot off without taking further damage. The guard's armor does not prove nearly as effective, the arrow piercing it at a joint. She grunts in pain, though manages to keep her feet as she staggers backwards a step, fumbling at her belt to withdraw a vial of some sort which she drinks hastily. You see the worst of the bleeding stop.

The sergeant gets up off the ground with a grim look. Fuming, he advances on Masym to flank with the second guard. That other guard, however, does not seem inclined to stay in that position, as she steps up to stand shoulder to shoulder with her commanding officer, pulling out a small vial and attempting to drink it as well.

This will provoke from Masym!

As the guard tries to imbibe her potion, Masym takes advantage of the momentary distraction to slash at her with his sword. His blade strikes true, and she slumps to the ground, the potion falling to the ground beside her.

Malusha finally manages to get off a clear shot at the other guard as she finishes drinking her own potion, the bolt reopening the wounds she'd only just managed to mend. Wei Tchak then steps forward and finishes her off with a single slash of his katana.

I have found that the talky stuff can slow down a PbP. I was in a PbP where the entire scenario was about trying to establish trade for an auction. It did not go well since the character I had was not built for that.

Tchak has nothing to add here really except for being stunned by the Baroness' beauty despite her lack of a beak, lol... none of that will help diplomacy, I'm sure... and the talky stuff is great in pbp usually, just not for Tchak much, he's no diplomat...

all of that is in addition to the fact that I'm a little overwhelmed caring for post-surgical dog, who needs lots of care... I don't recommend orthopedic surgery for a dog unless you have a lot of time to be a caregiver.

And yeah, social-heavy scenarios can either be great or a drag in PbP depending on the PCs in the group and the players themselves. If you're recruiting for a one-shot run of something it probably never hurts to mention it if it's going to be combat-heavy or social-heavy :)

Then again I've also been told some scenarios pull a bit of a bait-and-switch with what to expect, so there's that...

Anything that only misses on a 1, and gets a free haste effect for 3 attacks a round... and a 10' damage aura... will be mean at your guys' levels. (And I never got to a second round of grappling on anyone for the constrict to come into play)

Defeat an outsider that has the evil subtype, an evil-aligned creature with the elemental subtype, or an undead creature whose CR is at least equal to your character level.

Wondering if the revenant counts for that :)

He was only CR 6! =)
But that's still enough to count!

And for those curious, the final encounter with Kiryena and the troll and the cavalier on the horse was CR 7... should negotiations go south.

Will put in some final posts tonight, or maybe tomorrow morning (or maybe both), to finish things off as you sail away into the (warmer) sunset... and then finish up and send the chronicles after I do (at which point 5 of you gain a level).

Does not look like we're going to hit 3k posts though... (So close!) Well, unless you guys have more to cover, IC, before we go.

I know there's been some expression of interesting, from a few folks, in continuing on with these PC's in other adventures... but for now, you might need to find a different GM for that.

Unfortunately, I'm starting in on a very busy time at work for the next couple of months, so want to cut down on the distractions (GMing this has been very distracting for me. I don't know how people GM multiple games at the same time!)

Anyway, hope everyone has enjoyed our little jury-rigged mini campaign and my first foray into PbP GMing. I thought it all worked out pretty well as one big story, and it did wonders for my closet creative writing bent!

I might pick up the GMing reins again come summer time... certainly planning to offering something on the next PbP Gameday at the very least.

If you are looking for scenario suggestions, 6.22 Out of Anarchy would be my mine. It starts on the Grinning Pixie (where you will be ending this) ... takes place in Cheliax (which is on your way home) ... and ends up back on the Pixie again (to continue on to the next scenario!). I've not actually played it, so know nothing more then that, however.

For those curious what happened with Naldak's Point and the Sky Key... that storyline continues in 6.21 Tapestry's Toil (but its a 5-9, so only Nella is in the right range just yet).

For more Shadow Lodge shenanigans (beyond those you met in Whitethrone) those would be 1.51/52 City of Strangers (1 and 2) (in Magnimar) and then 2.23/24 Shadows Last Stand (1 and 2) (in Almas).

Oh, and there is a hot temperature version of the Snowmask Boon out there...

No worries GM, I'm really thankful that you were willing to run so many scenarios for us and that we got to be your test run for GMing PbP! Truth be told I'll be happy to take a little break from Nella once this one officially wraps up though I might have to bring her out to play again once the next PbP Gameday rolls around in the fall...or sooner, depending on what scenarios I see offered in the Flaxseed Lodge :)

Heh. I tried to do a similar sequence of scenarios for some RL friends... but they proved to not be overly interested in the whole PFS aspect of it. So it sputtered out.

I wanted to try again =)

But 2 levels of adventure for everyone! Now you can be Irrisen experts! Unfortunately, I can't think of any other scenarios where it might come up! So experts in spirit!

I had not played any PbP until I started in this game (and another GameDay V game) way back in August last year. But I can honestly say that these 9 months with this group have been some of the best gaming times I've ever had.

And as a GM, you did an excellent job. Your GMing became the standard by which I judged all other PbP games.

I understand the time issue but I hope that things free up for you in the future and you will be able to jump back into GMing.
