DM Talomyr's Kingmaker

Game Master Talomyr

Let it so known that the bearers of this charter, having delivered the northern reaches of the Greenbelt from the scourge of banditry, having provided detailed maps of the lay of the land, and having done no small amount of work in the exploration of said land and the culling of hostile monsters and indigenous hazards, are hereby granted the right to rule.

The nature and laws of rule are theirs to define, and the wellbeing of this new nation is theirs to protect.

In accordance for providing a stable nation to the south of central
Rostland, let there be a generous stipend of funds, support, and advice provided to this fledgling nation as a token of Restov and Brevoy’s goodwill, such that future relations between kingdoms might be mutually beneficial.

So witnessed under the watchful eye of the Lordship of Restov and by the authority granted by Lord Noleski Surtova, current Regent of the Dragonscale Throne.

I hate doing this, but I'm going to be dropping out. I've pretty much lost all interest in the games I'm in and not in a good place, mentally, to play.

Sorry to do this, but, well, better to let y'all know now than just ghosting on everyone.

Greenbelt Map Roll20 Link

Seems to be a bit of that going around, Terri, I've just lost a player in my other game for similar reasons. I appreciate you letting us know.

Take care. Hope things get better soon.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

In the interest of moving things along, we'll assume that Jhod accepts the temporary assignment as High Priest and Tove will slide in as the Grand Diplomat (unless of course she would prefer Terri soon to be vacated Councilor roll).

Since we've started this months kingdom management, we will also assume that Terri is around and fulfilling her roll as Councilor.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

A second call for Bassius. Anyone seen him around lately?

Greenbelt Map Roll20 Link

Building a Fishery in your home hex and building a smithy for a total of 10 BP. 6 Festivals, Standard Promotions, Light Taxation - right?

Next: Income Phase

Income Phase:
During the Income phase, you may add to or withdraw from the Treasury as well as collect taxes.

Step 1—Make Withdrawals from the Treasury: The kingdom-building rules allow you to expend BP on things related to running the kingdom. If you want to spend some of the kingdom's resources on something for your own personal benefit (such as a new magic item), you may withdraw BP from the Treasury and convert it into gp once per turn, but there is a penalty for doing so.

Each time you withdraw BP for your personal use, Unrest increases by the number of BP withdrawn. Each BP you withdraw this way converts to 2,000 gp of personal funds.

Step 2—Make Deposits to the Treasury: You can add funds to a kingdom's Treasury by donating your personal wealth to the kingdom—coins, gems, jewelry, weapons, armor, magic items, and other valuables you find while adventuring, as long as they are individually worth 4,000 gp or less. For every full 4,000 gp in value of the deposit, increase your kingdom's BP by 1.

If you want to donate an item that is worth more than 4,000 gp, refer to Step 3 instead.

Step 3—Sell Expensive Items for BP: You can attempt to sell expensive personal items (that is, items worth more than 4,000 gp each) through your kingdom's markets to add to your Treasury. You may sell one item per settlement district per turn. You must choose the settlement where you want to sell the item, and the item cannot be worth more than the base value of that settlement.

To sell an item, divide its price by half (as if selling it to an NPC for gp), divide the result by 4,000 (rounded down), and add that many BP to your Treasury.

You cannot use this step to sell magic items held or created by buildings in your settlements; those items are the property of the owners of those businesses. (See Magic Items in Settlements for more information on this topic.)

Step 4—Collect Taxes: Attempt an Economy check, divide the result by 3 (round down), and add a number of BP to your Treasury equal to the result.

Anything you'd like to do prior to collecting taxes?

RETIRED

I don't think we have anything to withdraw or contribute? So our Treasurer should just go to the Economy check?

Greenbelt Map Roll20 Link

Treasurer (Oleg) - Collect Taxes: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (8) + 20 = 28 /3 = 9 BP; Treasury at 48 BP

Event Phase (25% - low): 1d100 ⇒ 16 - Yes

Event Type: 1d100 ⇒ 80 = Dangerous settlement event

Dangerous settlement event: 1d100 ⇒ 31 = Drug Den

Drug Den (Settlement, Continuous): One of your Houses or Tenements becomes a hive of illicit drug trade. Attempt a Loyalty check and a Stability check, with a penalty equal to the number of Brothels, Tenements, Waterfronts, and lots with squatters in the settlement. If you succeed at both checks, you eliminate the drug den before your kingdom takes any penalties from the event. If you fail at one check, Crime and Unrest increase by 1. If you fail at both checks, Crime and Unrest increase by 1; Economy, Loyalty, and Stability decrease by 1; and on the next Event phase, a second drug den event occurs in the same settlement (01—50) or the nearest settlement (51—100).

No Penalty for the rolls, but I need Loyalty and Stability checks.

Really sorry to hear that Terri, but it’s completely understandable. It’s been a really rough year, and I’ve definitely been feeling the effects on my own mental health too. It sucks to lose interest in something that you used to enjoy but it happens.

I’m going to really miss Terri and Tove’s dynamic, but you have to look after yourself first. I hope you can find your way through the things you’re struggling with <3

RETIRED

Sorry to see you go Terri! Times have been really hard. I hope you recuperate from this doldrum. :(

RETIRED

I think we need Bassius, as traditionally the ruler does the Loyalty checks? And the Warden does the Stability checks.

Greenbelt Map Roll20 Link

While we push on, I suppose it is worth asking, are we recruiting again? Is it time to call it quits?

We are definitively down Terri and I'm not getting a good feeling about Bassius's return (it doesn't appear that he's posted under any alias since July 22).

M Elf Feral Hunter 6 | HP 39/45 | AC 19 T 14 FF 15 | Fort+6 Ref +9 Will+4 | Initiative +6 | Perception +14 / 18

There is a certainly a bleak tone to our news these days, Terri. I think it's effecting everyone who is paying attention. Do what you need to do to become better. Perhaps in time we shall meet again.

As for Bassius, didn't he just get married? He may be caught up in the whirlwind of his new life. I know I will on occasion forget to check for a couple days to my crazy work schedule. I would like to think he hasn't ghosted on us.

Did someone send him a private message? If he has vanished, we will need to recruit some replacements; at the very least we need a new ruler!

Looks like we’ve stalled a bit, but in case things start moving again, just letting you know that I’ll be heading out on another four day camp tomorrow so likely won’t be able to post anything here.

I’d certainly vote for doing another recruitment drive over calling it quits though, for the record.

Greenbelt Map Roll20 Link

Thus far, no response from Bassius.

Tove, be safe and have a good time on your camping trip.

If Bassius is gone and we do choose to do another recruitment to fill the voids left by Terri and Bassius, I would greatly prefer one of the existing players step into the role of Ruler. Of the remaining party members, Tove would seem to be the best suited choice - even if that sets you all up to become a theocracy. ;)

Theo will accept the offer of becoming your Grand Diplomat. Leaving you with a choice for Ruler and then filling role the vacated by the new Ruler.

It just seems wonky to be starting up a new kingdom and have a newcomer step in and start running the place.

M Elf Feral Hunter 6 | HP 39/45 | AC 19 T 14 FF 15 | Fort+6 Ref +9 Will+4 | Initiative +6 | Perception +14 / 18

TL;DR Tove is clearly the best choice.

A bit more rambly: We're somewhat stuck from a sense of Mechanics vs. Narrative. Having a new character take on the mantle of a ruler doesn't really make sense, narratively, even if they are a cracked out charisma monkey which would help the kingdom mechanically. Garethane, Ivo, and Kalaman aren't choices that make great narrative sense either. Tove is one of the original charter holders and has enough charisma to get the job done.

As I recall, we can put up monuments as part of our building options, right? With all of the characters that have wandered out of this campaign or out and out died, we have plenty of memorial statue options. Alternately, street names. I can see future tour guides now: "Welcome to Lost Paladin Square"

RETIRED

Ugh. Ivo is temperamentally unsuited to living in an Erastilian theocracy. I'll make a different character. Probably someone to take on the diplomacy role.

Greenbelt Map Roll20 Link

Jesse, unless you are wanting to make another character, I don't think it's etched in stone at all as to who the ruler will be. My comment was purely thinking along the lines of Garethane's comments above.

If you do choose to make a new character this will be a bit odd for me - only one original character left and only one of them gone due to character death...granted this isn't that unusual for PBP.

RETIRED

I'm just thinking that I don't want to play a character who's constantly getting into arguments with Tove and making things uncomfortable and difficult. While I could change Ivo's characterization, it feels like it would be a bad fit for the way he thinks (I conceptualized Ivo as a moral pragmatist, one who grapples with having to deal with imperfect solutions to problems while trying to find the best way to minimize harm.) Despite this he tries to be upbeat, though he's taken a dour turn lately with his new role as Spymaster. I just want to avoid causing unnecessary strife with the party.

M Elf Feral Hunter 6 | HP 39/45 | AC 19 T 14 FF 15 | Fort+6 Ref +9 Will+4 | Initiative +6 | Perception +14 / 18

While being the designated "arguer in chief" doesn't necessarily sound like a fun role, what if we elevated Ivo to co-ruler status along with Tove? That push and pull, moral pragmatist and fervent believer, would probably establish the tempered approach that it seemed like we were going for before. And with a 15 Cha, Ivo is no slouch in the Ruler department, especially if we could use the kingdom's resources to get some stat boosting items to the key personnel.

It would seem to me that by putting the two original charterholders together in that position, it would stop a lot of arguments before they start.

RETIRED

An interesting solution, though Ivo doesn't want to rule anything (though he does hope that at some future date there can be a small village of gnomes somewhere in the new kingdom). Besides, if we want a co-ruler we should get Tove hooked up with a spouse ;)

M Elf Feral Hunter 6 | HP 39/45 | AC 19 T 14 FF 15 | Fort+6 Ref +9 Will+4 | Initiative +6 | Perception +14 / 18

Are, uh... half-gnomes a thing, GM?

No.

Garethane, you know full and well that I'm not Dave C and would not create such a thing. ;)

And as far as that goes, Tove seems to be trying to hook up with your new general...

M Elf Feral Hunter 6 | HP 39/45 | AC 19 T 14 FF 15 | Fort+6 Ref +9 Will+4 | Initiative +6 | Perception +14 / 18

Well, discussions of interesting hybrids aside (Tove, you're welcome! / I'm sorry) I think we need a tank (for combat) and a diplomat (for the kingdom). If Ivo is "transitioning" then we'll need a trapfinder / spymaster as well. Sounds like we could accept up to 3 players, depending on what roles we need filled.

On an aside. Dave C's game when I have gotten to play a gnoblin (an unholy abomination of gnome and goblin who get's bonus to attack both base races due to "self hatred") alchemist has been an endless source of joy to play. Riding a goblin dog and raining fiery gnomish hate on my enemies is just so deliciously *wrong*.

Male Tiefling Magus (Bladebound/Kensai) 5|Movement speed: 30| HP 43| AC 20 T 18 FF 12 | CMD 24 FF 16| Fort+6 Ref +5 Will+4| Initiative +9 | Perception +1 | Arcana 6/6 | Black Blade Arcana 2/2 | Pearl of power 1/1

I agree with the tank and diplomat, and ruler if the party doesn't want a theocracy. As for that, until tove becomes more accepting of non core races, there would be some friction between kalaman and a tove led theocracy.

Female Human (Ulfen) Cleric 6 | HP 44/44| AC 18 T 13 FF 16 | Fort+4 Ref +4 Will+8 | Initiative +2 | Perception +10* | Channel 8/8 | Portrait | Elkmark Calendar

Oh wow... yeah Tove would be more than happy to take on the role of ruler. I’d like to think she won’t cause too much trouble. It might take her a bit longer to learn to be more accepting now that Terri won’t be around to talk her down when she gets riled up, but she’s definitely working on it. But I’m not out here trying to break up the party, if something about the way I play Tove is causing real problems, I can get her to adjust quicker.

But no, she’s not about to hook up with Ivo, or any men, any time soon. That’s a hard pass from me.

RETIRED

To be clear, I'm not in any way put out or upset. Ivo and Tove just have very different methods, I think, and they may prove to be incompatible with Tove in the Big Seat. Hence I'm thinking about making a character that would be less likely to create conflict and a better fit with an Erastilian theocracy. (Also would likely be a good Diplomat.)

Greenbelt Map Roll20 Link

Alright, I've yet to hear back from Bassius, so unless any of you would prefer to give him more time to respond I will begin the process of writing him out of the game.

Drug Den Results:

Loyalty Check DC 22: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23 - success!

Stability Check DC 22: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (8) + 16 = 24 - success!

I'll get a post up soon to describe what happened there and Terri's decision to leave.

IF we are going forward with Tove being the new ruler, and Ivo would still like to depart as a result of that, we would have the following scenario:

Ruler - Tove Hellstrom
Consort - Vacant
Heir - Vacant
Councilor - Vacant
General Celeste - Naevirion
Grand Diplomat - Vacant/Jesse's new character
High Priest - Jhod Kavken?
Magister - Kalaman Mar
Marshal - Garethane Seregon
Royal Enforcer - Vacant
Spymaster - Vacant
Treasurer - Oleg Leveton (Temporary)
Warden - Kesten Garess

With the italicized roles incurring a penalty for vacancy.

I'll fire back up the recruitment thread in a minute or two, saying that we are looking for two new characters to join, one of which should be front-line/martially inclined. For the second, I'm thinking best character available regardless of build.

Thoughts?

RETIRED

Should probably note in recruitment that we desperately need to fill the roles of councilor and spymaster, so people can build characters that will be able to do those!

If I switch characters, I am probably going to take one of the pseudo-Leadership feats like Recruits or Light Bearer, and I could use a companion from that to fill a spot.

Greenbelt Map Roll20 Link

The re-recruitment thread posted and linked to the campaign if you are interested in reviewing any applicants and providing feedback on what you see.

M Elf Feral Hunter 6 | HP 39/45 | AC 19 T 14 FF 15 | Fort+6 Ref +9 Will+4 | Initiative +6 | Perception +14 / 18

Would it make sense to have Ivo stick around as an NPC spymaster? Or do you think it's time for him to find a new kingdom to champion? The NPC route wouldn't solve any of the inherent conflicts in approach between the characters, but would free you to play a character that that had less conflict while still keeping one of the original charter holders involved in the future of the kingdom.

Female Half-Elf Unchained Rogue (Eldritch Scoundrel) 6 | 45/45 HP | AC 13 T 13 FF 11 | Fort +4 Ref +8 Will +4 | Initiative +3 | Perception +12 (+15 vs. traps, trap spotter) | Recruits

Putting Ivo onto the DM as an extra character seems a little unfair, since we'd basically be getting all the benefits of him in a leader role without having to worry about him dying on adventures. Plus the DM would have to play him - and if the DM didn't, then I would effectively be playing two characters, which would be really unfair!

Anyway if Ivo doesn't stay, this is my substitute, a factotum-type Jill-of-All-Trades who can do many things adequately, including many rogue skills, utility spellcasting, and diplomacy.

Female Human (Ulfen) Cleric 6 | HP 44/44| AC 18 T 13 FF 16 | Fort+4 Ref +4 Will+8 | Initiative +2 | Perception +10* | Channel 8/8 | Portrait | Elkmark Calendar

Not to mention that if the only reason Jesse is switching is to avoid Ivo coming into conflict with Tove. That's kind of made redundant if we keep the gnome on the council anyway.

Celebeth seems really cool though, and I'd be excited to see how she plays with Zanbabe's character if she ends up filling one of our open spots.

Female Half-Elf Unchained Rogue (Eldritch Scoundrel) 6 | 45/45 HP | AC 13 T 13 FF 11 | Fort +4 Ref +8 Will +4 | Initiative +3 | Perception +12 (+15 vs. traps, trap spotter) | Recruits

Also Celebeth has the Recruits feat, which means that she does come with a built-in retinue to help fill out kingdom posts!

Ultimately which character you choose to play is up to you, Jesse. Play which ever one is going to make you happier.

This is a game, and if you aren't having at least a modicum of fun, what's the point?

Ok, let's make the switch. Ivo, seeing the writing on the wall, packs his stuff on his donkey and heads off for other lands, likely to settle down as a toymaker and gunsmith. Celebeth can show up when the current round of recruitment ends and new characters arrive. Also once new folks are selected I can pick her two Recruits-feat cohorts based on what positions are still needed for the kingdom.
