His father was well regarded as a warrior whose allegiance to one of the great houses pre-dated the birth of most of the humans he met, so Garethane was often invited to sword practice. Whether it was out of kindness to the odd elf boy or to curry favor with the legendary warrior, the boy cared not. But he was soon dubbed "Garret" by the troops he played with and was an apt pupil. His lessons were taken to heart, both in the practice yard with the sword and in the forest with the bow, and he became a fiendishly difficult sparring opponent even as the troops who had first welcomed him became old veterans themselves. It was the first time that Garret was training a new recruit and realized that it was the grandson of one of his first teachers that it really struck home: This was going to happen over and over as one human generation replaced the next. Two generations he had changed from the pupil to the teacher. What would the next two turn him into? As much as he was accepted in the training yards of Brevoy, he was not likely to become a swordlord. That was more a thing for humans to aspire to for a few decades. Not a position for one of his kind to hold onto for generations. For the first time he realized that where he had grown up may not turn out to be his forever place. His father and mother had made their place helping to ensure the veneration of the old ways was observed, that the Medvyeds and the Gronzi lived in harmony. His mother tending the groves and animals directly while his father help ensure the Medvyeds maintained enough temporal power to keep the forest safe. Garret needed to find his own groves, perhaps metaphorically, perhaps literally. Now he finds himself heading southward toward the Stolen Lands. If he finds something truly interesting, something he can really throw himself into, he could be a powerful asset. He remembers the intensity of his boyhood studies of the forest and training yard. He is ready to bring that intensity to bear. =================================================
