I don't envy you that position.

Well, it's pretty cramped and smells a lot like cheese.

You take that back. You oughtn't say such things.

Is it dumb and dumber?

That's all that comes to mind

Isn't the line, "It's, like, we share one brain between us" ?

I also like, "Thank god for model trains. If it weren't for the little ones, how would they know how to make the big ones?"

~Shakes head~

Anyways, I eagerly await decisions. I'm still in the process of rewriting the stories of my characters...my new job is leaving me more exhausted then I'd initially thought it would. It shouldn't affect my availability to post regular stuff (i.e. one or two paragraphs describing actions and thoughts/dialogue). It is just that having to write all of that up in an artistic couple of pages takes a bit longer.

You're correct DeathQuaker, I had to alter the line to make it fit the conversation which triggered the line, but yes. You're right. and LOL at model trains. So great!

Prioritization is good... good for you, I say.

I would also like to post a submission if still possible.

A) Any AP is fine with me, I haven't played or read any of them before, but I am sure each one has interesting aspects so whichever one is chosen will be exciting.

B) An elven female cleric by the name of Lyan Ryzer consecrated to the god Desna or Sarenrae or Gozreh (if one of them is more preferable by the DM then that particular god, if not, I would choose one. At the moment I am leaning towards, Sarenrae). The cleric would be an active fighting member of the group and has a tendency to use both a long sword and magic to attack. I would like the character to be the potential healer of the group, however also help out in fights (I don't like standing on the sidelines of a fight, however if healing is needed by others, I tend to set aside my attacks and heal instead). I would probably stay only a cleric, not even going into prestige classes or would try prestige classes associated with nature or healing (something in tune with the deity chosen).

C) Lyan would be of neutral good or lawful good alignment, I'd say that my cleric was classically trained at an elven temple, but was sent off as an emissary of the faith or fighter for the faith (to heal the sick around the world, to dispense justice, to protect nature or whatever aspect the god resides over). That would enable the character to join an adventuring group and travel the world, however stick with her class. I would like to play the cleric as a loyal and caring companion to the party, willing to stick up for what she believes in or who she believes. A cleric is my favorite class and I tend to play them good and moral, except they usually have a certain flaw that makes them not perfect.....in the current face to face game, the cleric has a weakness for gambling......so I would stick to this principle in this game as well. I think the cleric could have a blurred line of what are acceptable actions in terms of fighting or she would hoard magical items or treasure (perhaps some type of greed as his vice). The cleric could start of anywhere, whatever is needed by the DM. I'd say that she has no family, the temple is the only family she has known thus far. Lyan is from either a city or village (again what suits the DM however I would like the city to be metropolitan so Lyan would be familiar with many different races) surrounded by abundant nature, which is why she inclines towards this affiliation.

Appearance: I would like the cleric to appear almost angelic, but to make travelling easier, she would tend to wear robes, underneath them some light and a cape to cover up. Long blond golden or white silverish hair, dressed in white or yellow robes, blue or yellow big eyes, exudes grace, typical elven female height and weight.

D) PBP history, practically no games played online, however I am a player in a face to face campaign, where we meet once a week.

Hello again,

based on suggestions of a more experienced online player, I decided to post an addition to my submission with more concrete decisions about the profile of my character I would like to play, since he mentioned I left too much open to the DM, which makes it seem like I cannot decide. I am open to changes to the character if needed or wanted by the DM, but this would be my preference:

Lyan Ryzer, female elven cleric consecrated to the god Sarenrae. She is a fighter (with a long sword and magic) and a healer who puts the good of the group above personal glory when it comes to battle. She would remain fully a cleric (no prestige classes or multiclassing). The main calling of Lyan would be healing and the protection of nature and justice. She doesn't hesitate to fight and serve justice, although what she considers justice doesn't always have to coincide with what Sarenrae thinks.

Lyan is honest, a faithful companion who protects those she trusts, but if the trust is broken, forgiveness has to be earned. She believes in the principles of her goddess, but hates to be part of the order in the temple and that is why she chooses and asks to go on missions for her temple or act as an embodiment or example of the faith across the lands. She hates to be commanded, has a problem with authority and restrictions (whether travel, moral or behavior) placed on her by her class and temple (even though she may act by them naturally). She wants to remain a member of the temple, however more as a free wandering adventurer.

Lyan was born in a fairly metropolitan city, where she had a chance to interact with a variety of races and classes and encountered lots of trades. The city she grew up in also encouraged her need to be more free and independent, to become part of an adventuring group. She is patient and easy to get along with, but if her patience wears out she is quick to action (fight). Although she is a cleric, a person dedicated to the help of others, she is selfish when it comes to magical or rare items. In this aspect she almost resembles a rogue, if she hears of treasure and magical items that might be useful to her, she goes after them or when within a group sides with those who want to pursue them, even though it may be detrimental to the current mission of the adventuring party. She wouldn't even mind stealing the items if she found them interesting even though stealing goes against what her class preaches.

Lyan's origins are not well known. Her mother died during childbirth and the father is unknown, which makes her status in the city an orphan (although the father might reappear). After her mother's death, she was raised by the other clerics in the temple. As a child, she had a tendency to disappear from her prayers and was usually found training with a sword or helping the local medicine men and healers, but always outside. She doesn't like to be closed up in one space for too long. She had a few friends as a child, but due to her upbringing didn't spend much time around other children. She gets along better with well rounded adults and those who have similar interests to hers. She loves animals, although was unable to keep one by orders of the temple.

Appearance: Gold like long (up to waist) slightly curled, but mostly straight hair, yellow big eyes, athletic body, innate grace with typical elven features.

Hope this gives a more detailed view of what I would prefer to play than my previous post. If other information will be asked for, I'll try to provide it as soon as possible.

Stuff.

How did she come to become a member of her church and worship Sarenrae? How does she share her faith? Are there any aspects of Sarenrae's dogma that she struggles with?

What lead to Lyan's compulsion to hoard magic items? Does she ever worry that it conflicts with her faith? How does she come to terms with these two things?

I like some of the things you said here, particularly the bit about heroic characters. Get me some sort of background (it can be vague in parts). If you can't write up a background without a specific AP, just choose one and write the background for that.

I have just finished writing the general background. I can add to it in order to provide some AP-specific motivations once the AP is chosen.

Here is my background:

Maxrow Eldner:

The gift of prophecy can be a blessing, yet also a curse. Maxrow's experience is a testament to that paradox.

Born to a prominent magister family in Razmiran, his early childhood years were spent luxury. As an only son in a family of wealth and privilege, Maxrow's parents spoiled him. Anything a child could want, he merely needed to ask for and sometimes not even that...

Living a carefree life, Maxrow loved to watch the stars, read books and observe his parents' involvement in politics. He was also fascinated by his parents' command of magic, but having been spoiled by luxurious living and doting parents meant that even though he wanted to, he simply did not have the determination necessary to dedicate decades of his life to magical study to follow in their footsteps.

Paradise on Earth is never forever, though, and everything changed with Razmir's arrival. His assault on the ruling magister class was brutal. Claiming to be a god, he unleashed terrible destruction and let his gold-masked priests loose on any magisters who survived the initial mayhem.

Eldners did live through the first wave of destruction, but their luck was not to last, as gold-masked priests caught up with them in their country getaway. Maxrow was an adolescent by then and the family collectively agreed to make a break for with everybody running in a different direction, so that the pursuers could not get them all. Overcome by fear, as he was running he slowly regained his composure and even thought himself fortunate that nobody seems to have chosen him as the quarry. When he arrived at the designated meeting place, though, nobody else was there. So he waited and waited, but it was in vain. It eventually dawned on him, that no others had made it.

Grieving Maxrow set out to on his own, but spoiled and unwise in the ways of the world, it was only a matter of time before he was captured too. Sadistic priests did not kill him on the spot. Perhaps they did not recognize him as a son of the magisters or they simply did not consider him a threat and wanted to have fun torturing him at the temple or maybe they wanted him to serve as a slave; all he knew is that he was caught and bound, yet spared.

As he was being brought to the temple, his priestly captors joined with a few others, transporting prisoners from the south. During the night at camp, Maxrow noticed that he could roll to grab one of the logs in the fire and use it to burn through the ropes tying other prisoners. Afraid to draw the anger of the cruel priests, though, he just lay there all night, motionless.

Next day they reached the temple and he was made to watch his fellow prisoners being beaten and sacrificed. Ravaged by revulsion and guilt, he struggled, so that several priests had to restrain him. It was then when they told him, "If you cannot bear watching a sacrifice to our God, you will never be able to see anything agan." Bringing him to the roof of the temple, they forced his eyes open and held his head, forcing him to stare at the Sun. Maxrow's eyes burned, but he was forced to keep his gaze fixed. Eventually, the pain petered out. To his surprise, Maxrow could still see the bright golden disc in the sky, but when his head was finally released, he was indeed blind... or nearly so. Surprisingly, he could still see the various celestial objects, but on Earth, his vision was almost gone.

Their evil handiwork done, the priests had left him for a few days in his cell to wallow in grief before they were going to execute him. When sulking and watching the stars, one of the few things he could still see well, through the small, barred window, Maxrow had his first vision and spoke it aloud. A small meteor would fall that night and bring great wealth to the one who got there first. A priest overheard him, but thought nothing of it, until a meteor did fall - a meteor with mithril.

Following that incident, the priests would spare Maxrow, to prophesize for them. His visions were infrequent and he could not control them. Nevertheless, he was eventually allowed to roam small confined sections of the temple on his own. One day he heard another group of prisoners passing by in the temple. This time he would try to make up for his past cowardice. He managed to get hold of a ceremonial dagger and cut through the bonds of several prisoners. They made a break for it, when the priests least expected it and grateful for his help, carried the relatively frail and light Maxrow with them.

Once they got far enough, they all went their separate ways. This time, though, whether through fate or priest disinterest on account of a lack of recent visions, Maxrow would not be caught. Though reluctantly, he sold the ceremonial embossed dagger that he used to cut the prisoners free, which afforded him enough money to buy supplies, board a ship and leave the country.

Wow, that is a great backstory. Unfortunately, with applications closing today you're going to have less time than most to answer these questions.

***

Oracles aren't required to venerate a patron deity but they still have them. Which god or gods are responsible for Maxrow's gifts/curse? Why did they choose him?

If Maxrow became aware of this figure's role in his survival and escape how would he feel towards them?

I dunno if that's really an emotion, per se... perhaps you mean "sentiment"?

Dark Archive

Yeah, good luck everyone. It's surely going to be a tough race.

While sentiment is the better fit, there are no lyrics that I'm aware of that say, "I second that sentiment". Me and the 1967 Smokey Robinson are gonna stick with emotion for this one. :)

Liberty's Edge

After some checking and double checking, I've narrowed it down to nine finalists.

From here there will be another series of questions and based on your answers, I'll be choosing the party of five and one alternate.

The finalists are:

Aran Innatven

Spoiler:
Your backstory was very well fleshed out and cohesive with Golarion lore. Your character himself (while not terribly interesting mechanically) fit his backstory.

Something you may want to think about is how Aran came to possess Favored Enemy: Human. He has a history as a hunter, not a bounty hunter.

Amoonrann Stormheart (or some variation thereof)

Spoiler:
A potentially interesting character mechanically. I like the idea of a fighting druid of some capacity that isn't necessarily a wildshaper. I want to see a backstory and some reasoning why being a vanaras is so integral to the character's identity.

I think the character would do just fine as a core race.

Ceru

Spoiler:
A fairly standard character stable but a gnome instead of a halfling. I like that. I'd like to see her relationship with magic/arcanists become a bigger part of her identity - it seemed to be a fairly big driving force in her backstory.

Ysmerelda, Dawn's Rose

Spoiler:
I'll be honest. You almost didn't make the cut. I don't like the 'divine spark' as a source for her paladin abilities - This is one of those 'cohesiveness' things I've been harping about. The thing that pushed you into finalist status was your very well thought-out view on sex.

I honestly didn't need that much detail but the fact that you gave it to me meant a lot. Consider adjusting her backstory a bit to include some measure of formal paladin training.

Eli Blakewater

Spoiler:
Excellent backstory.

Also, you're the first alchemist I've personally seen that wasn't an optimized bomber or mutagen abuser. Kudos. Continue impressing me.

Pirknok Stonemight

Spoiler:
A dwarven barbarian isn't terribly exciting (I'd have liked to have seen a unique or exotic weapon at least) and your backstory wasn't that impressive but you answered my fairly challenging followup question in a thorough and well thought-out manner.

Doran Quickstep

Spoiler:
An interesting character build. Show me that Doran can grow to be a team player (the unyieldingly lawful character is only fun for so long.)

Adventus Artemidorus

Spoiler:
Not a terribly interesting character mechanically, but your response to my question showed that you'd thought about the responsibilities (both IC and OOC) that come with having an animal companion.

I'd like to see Adventus appear a bit more flawed (there's a reason I asked about him being a hothead).

Ensu, gnome cleric of Nethys

Spoiler:
A non-standard race for a non-standard deity. Both good in my book.

The fact that you were at peace with one of your domains almost never seeing use means a lot. There's a certain entitlement thing that comes with gamer culture. It's refreshing to see someone be understanding for once.

Liberty's Edge

That's for all the applications!

All finalists please post in the discussion thread.

If you'd like feedback on why you were not chosen, please shoot me a PM with a link to the post pitching your character.

First; thank you very much. I am quite pleased & feel quite honored to have been chosen.
That said, unless the AP you are planning on running, or at least considering, is Carrion Crown, I am going to bow out.
I do appreciate your suggestions regarding Ysmerelda's training, and I do intend to clarify/elucidate that aspect of her past.
I will be following this thread to be certain the direction you are intending regarding AP's & will likely post, or PM, my additions/changes to character background so that you may determine if I managed to fulfill the promise you saw in the character.

Dark Archive

I am very pleased to have been chosen, and I strongly suggest those that weren't don't be discouraged.

Keep at it and you'll definitely find a game to play. I wish you all the best. :)

Liberty's Edge

I believe based on the finalists we're leaning towards either Kingmaker or Rise of the Runelords.

Regardless, I suggest you check-in in the discussion thread. Don't bow out until you're 100% certain we will not be doing Carrion Crown.

Worst-case: Are you opposed to changing Ysmerelda slightly to fit either of those APs?

I'll reiterate this. Also, totally take Feral up on his offer of feedback; not many GMs will take their time to do that, in my experience, and you may receive some valuable insights that will help you in future recruitments.

Bah...I hate when I don't check the recruitment boards often enough. Ah, well. Grats to all who were chosen as finalists - good luck!

Congratulations to all the winners or in the spirit of the upcoming holiday season: Merry adventuring and happy GMing!

Thanks, Roman, and to you as well!

Rise, I would be more inclined towards, simply due to already playing in a Kingmaker Campaign. Although the urge to attempt to establish a Halfling nation in the River Kingdoms is strong.

Yes I know I'm not a Halfling, I was still raised by them. I will post to the Discussion thread.

Liberty's Edge

Roman,

It's a shame you got your background in so late. You were honestly a very strong contender. If you don't mind, I suggest you follow the game. If there ends up being an opening I'd love to see another app from you.

Feral,

Thanks for the encouragement. One of the things that held me up was my lack of familiarity with Golarion combined with my yearning to have the character rooted in the setting. Hence the need to do research to find a place with current disposition and historical events that would fit the idea I had for Maxrow. Still, I should have posted the background earlier - it didn't take that long. Indeed, one could argue that paucity of knowledge about Golarion (or the APs) itself might not make me an ideal candidate for a game in the setting, but Paizo's adventure paths have a reputation for excellence, so I am keen on trying one.

In any case, this promises to be an interesting game, so I might follow along or at least pop in from time to time (the one thing which might stop me is the desire to avoid spoilers - I try to avoid movie trailers for the same reason, but sometimes cannot resist to watch them at least partially). You have collected a bunch of good players and are clearly an experienced GM - something I can surmise from your probing questions, not being afraid to tinker with the rules and your general vibe. (Well, that and your number of posts ;) )

Just curious as to why Dairkal wasn't chosen.

For those simply interested in an AP, there is another thread starting. A GM is putting together a party to be ready for Reign of Winter when it comes out in February.

Apologies for not following up promptly. Work got real this week and prevented me from having enough free time to draft a character. Good luck to the finalists :p.
