Caverns of Azlantia

Game Master Dread

Hidden away in the jungles of the Mwangi Expanse, the crumbling ruins of the ancient Azlanti people, known as Azlantia, has remained unknown....until now. An Explorer dying from a strange disease has surfaced in Bloodcove. His fevered ramblings of treasure, Beast-Men serving a Minotaur King, Lizard-Folk in direct rebellion to the King, a Death Cult trying to find secrets long buried, rumors of an ancient evil waiting release and more perk the attention of those who are intrepid enough to face these dangers to find the secrets of the Caverns of Azlantia.

Are you brave enough?

Welcome to the recruitment thread for the reskinned Caverns of Thracia for PF1 taken from Necromancer Games republished AD&D module.

This is a combat heavy game in a multi-level dungeon that has twists, turns, Traps galore. There's ample opportunity for role playing within the depths.

Think I want to bring a Tiefling Paladin to the fore. Frontliner, and 'Butt Kicking for Goodness!'

Yes to Background skills. I added it to the character creation rules

Also from the interest thread. Dotting til I get home, so I have time to consider.

Thanks for running this.

Concept:

Anais La Valette

--succesfully purchased title of "grand admiral of the Galtese peoples Republic".
--about 5 or so regime changes after the Galtse Peoples Republic has been bloodily replaced by the "Democratic Republic of Galt"
--Galt never had a coastline anyway
--Stuck in bloodcove
--Has a sword, has a bear, will travel
--Doggedly refuses to explain why she has a Grizzly Animal companion (from her mystery)
--Her Grizzly, named "First mate" is frankly more reasonable and responsible then she is.
--"First mate" also holds the record for "most facepalms ever performed by a bear".

Party roles: Frontliner, face, gets into trouble, spellcasting although delayed

Build: Starts as Spirit guide Oracle 1 (Lunar mystery, curse tbd), then dips into swashbuckler 1, then reminaing levels are spirit guide.

Dungeon in the middle of the jungle? This guy was my attempt at an Indiana Jones PC for a megadungeon game that fell apart. Background is wholesale just stealing Indy's except he's from Almas University in Andoran instead of Marshall College in Connecticut. He'd be perfect for this game.

Archaeologist Bard
Primary combat role: ranged/buffing
Primary party role: Knowledge skills/exposition for the DM and finding/disabling traps

Still dreadfully interested.....might go with a Swashvuckler out of the shackles.

Ahh Minsc. 'None shall se me, though my battle cry may give me away'

I think I can guess since it wasn’t in the listed classes, but even LE antipalaldins are off the table? Was thinking maybe a wannabe Hellknight, or Chelish/Sargavan naval officer who is for some reason disgraced/forced out of the service/etc. But I could do the same concept in other ways, if Antipaladin is off the table.

As long as you are bound to the party it's quite alright. Same as a Ninja since they are an alternate Rogue.

No Samurai though since Cavalier is out. (No horseman in the dungeon ;))

Starting level is an excellent question!

No horseman? What is your view on other animal companions?

My character would only ride her bear if both she and the bear are drunk, which happens more often then it should.

Starting level is 3.

Animal companions are fine. Some areas easy to manuever...others not so much. It's up to you to figure out how to get them past obstacles.

Hehe

Just theres just no place for a cavalryman

If Tessai gets selected, and people ‘ping’ on her Detect Evil, we may not even get out of the tavern :P

Not sure on full details yet, but I'm going to go with a single class Wizard, something I've wanted to do for ages, but it never really worked out.

RPG Superstar 2009 Top 16

Any background requirements? I'm considering an at least semi-amnesiac android brawler.

No background requirements. It's a hodge podge of takers for sundry reasons why they might want to go to the Caverns

If we are in Bloodcove, a lot of people and other things will ping on that :)

The Paladins brain is hurting

I like this. I'm submitting an Oread Cleric of the Green Faith. I haven't created a full character sheet, but will post a character concept and background as described in the opening post.

Character concept:

Urtar Rockburst is very easy to get along with. His demeanor is calm and it feels like he never has a worry in the world. Somehow, in his presence, things always feel relaxed and that time is moving a bit slower. His big muscly arms, however, show how nobody should find out what he is like when he's angry.

This is a (vanilla) cleric with decent strength. When he's not healing, he is poking with his longspear. He will definitely go for Earth domain. Second domain I am still debating. Might go Fire for hot goodness or Plant for more versatility as well as the very powerful Barkskin spell.

Quick background:

Urtar Rockburst has lived in the Mwangi Expanse his whole life. Since early on he was exposed to the teaching of the Green Faith. While the philosophy always attracted him, he never found the interest to join a druidic circle and their very literal understanding of being close to nature.

Instead, he found himself talking to others about the Green Faith as something that would benefit them, given how close to nature they are. After so much work of his own will and volition, he found himself with clerical powers. He enjoyed them and started to take a more active role in the Mwangi Expanse, traveling more, healing the sick and being generally a good listener. Who would know what expected him from the caves within the jungle?

tropes for anais:

"This will work out great!"
--Anais is extremely optimistic

"Friends, I have a cunning plan!"
--Anais prefers unconventional solutions to problems

"First mate if you would?"
--When these dont work she has a Grizzly

"Compulsive trashtalking disorder"
--Mouths off while fighting, erranously assumes that things understand her or care

"I pay in my first mate in booze"
--Pays her animal companion in booze and sweets, mostly booze actually

"Did you say treasure map?"
--Anais is easily scammed

A small blurb for Tessai?:

There was a prophecy, once. Scribbled on the walls of a burned-out temple by a dying oracle some say, or murmured by a mad hermit in the hills - accounts vary. It spoke of a child with devil’s blood who would stand against a deathless king in the world’s forgotten places. Most dismissed it. A few believed. One old knight, half-cracked from years of battle and drink, believed enough to take in a horned, red-eyed orphan pulled from the ashes of a village raid. He named her Tessai and raised her to fight.

She grew up with whispered expectations at her back and suspicious stares to her face. The Church never officially acknowledged her, and she was never invited to join the noble orders. But she found a way to serve. She took her own vows - against fiends, against cruelty, against the easy road.

Now she follows rumors of ancient evils stirring in the south. The name Azlantia comes up often, and with it, things she half-remembers from the old knight’s stories. Maybe it’s coincidence. Maybe it’s fate.

Tessai doesn’t know if she’s the one the prophecy spoke of - if it was even a prophecy at all. But the world’s full of evil, and someone has to stand against it. She’ll do what she can, for as long as she can. And if that’s not enough… Then the prophecy was never about her to begin with.

Character Concept:
Dwarven Wizard of the Conjuration school, here. (Mr. Nevet's character)

Rhaeodlaf is one of those rare dwarves that values intellectual prowess and book-learning, and an even rarer member of the moderate folk who have the ability to summon and cast arcane spells.

Still, like many dwarves, he takes pride in hard work, dedication, and of course crafting of all sorts, and it's through this rather unusual combination that Rhaeodlaf found himself meandering the numerous aisles of the Academy library in search of recipies to use in brewing ale...which started him down a path of research and study concerning a location called the Caverns of Azlantia, an area reknowned for some formidable brews....and possibly the location of numerous magical items and more importantly, Spellbooks!

...or something like that. Rhaeodlaf is intended to be the cliche wizard type, say a young gandalf or whatever, but with the mindset and personality of your standard dwarf.

Male, Dwarf, Conjuration Wizard

His spells are going to be intended to be a hodgepodge of utility, battlefield control and support, as well as some fun-filled blasting.

Powerslam opponents with the power of nanomachines.

I think I go with a fighter, slayer, or ranger. I'll have something out here in a couple of days.

Very much a dot.
Very Good to see you throwing your hat back in the ring GMMichael.

If I'm a tiefling, can I take Fiendish Heritage?

Ouachitonian wrote:

yes, as long as you roll on the variant tiefling ability table three times and choose from what you rolled and not just choose from the table

3d100 ⇒ (82, 46, 47) = 175

Don't know that I *need* it, but I won't turn down +2 to INT (46).

remember you are using a variant so---Rather than taking a tiefling’s usual racial ability modifiers, choose one of the tiefling heritage modifiers presented on page 64. Plus...In addition, you may roll on the Variant Tiefling Abilities table three times and choose the most favorable ability. and that was +2 to Int

@GMMichael,
in previous recruitments (1, 2) of yours, you have given several free feats:
(Free feats if have prerequisites: power attack, deadly Aim, combat expertise, scribe scroll. A character with scribe scroll as a character ability gains skill focus instead.)

Are you giving those free feats in this recruitment?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

I know it's totally not allowed in the build rules but a grippli cavalier riding an alligator is the first thing that comes to mind.

I'll see if I can come up with an idea within the build rules.

No problem. I was originally looking at Rakshasa-spawn, but now I'm reconsidering antipaladin. Smite Good is just too big a class feature to be dead weight (as it is in pretty much any campaign that isn't explicitly evil), so I may switch to fighter or something else suitably martial, and might end up changing my tiefling heritage, but I'll definitely take one of the alternates.

no. I do not believe itll be needed in this campaign.

Grand Lodge

Hmmm an Inquisitor would be interesting especially a tiefling Living Grimoire

This campaign sounds really interesting. I will add to this tomorrow but I'm looking at an aether kineticist, mostly range but happy with melee. (And I can't believe it's taken me so long to realize the Paizo forums would be a good place to look for pbp games.)

Heresy detected!

Dumb question to the GM:

Can Anais grizzly animal companion be lawfull neutral while she is chaotic neutral?

It should have next to no mechanical impact, but make things more amusing.

Sample of bearly important inner monologes:

The next person who claims I am an Alyushinyrran Urban Potato Bear gets a free claw to the face.

I really dont want to bite that, but I probably have to

One day, I will become a god and use my divine power to turn all fire elementals into bacon elementals, ahhh, bacon, ideally with some honey...

Alright, what did 2-legs-no-brain do now?

This caretaker job is killing my sanity

Oh god, she is going to do that really old "right to arm bears" joke in 5 4 3 2 1... there she goes! At least I get some animal barding out of that, although that technically more of a "right to armor bears" joke, but hej.

Another day of my live, in which I very badly pretend to only have bear like intelligence. And even with that I would not, as a matter of fact, fallen for this scam

My backstory is totally not about making a dumb wish, which a Glabrezu technically fulfilled by turning me into the "companion of a pretty and not very smart" lady. Given Glabrezu b@#&@!#~ that could have been worse though.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Sure, Animal Companions can be whatever alignment you choose. Truth is they are really neutral...the rest is fluff.

"First mate" will communicate extensively useing growls, eye movements and morse coding via face palms.

Okay here's Eyve, the embodiment of the phrase "I was built for this". Calm, unassuming, and hits like a truck

Skipped equipment and starting gold

This looks like fun. I've heard that Jaqauys is truly one of the gamers of all time. Alas that I've never gotten to experience her work (yet).

I'd like to play a Gnome Sorcerer (Draconic) with a focus on casting a dizzying variety of spells, such as Burning Hands, Burning Arc, and Fireball. Not sure on their origins or life story yet. In terms of appearance, I'm thinking something...red.

OK here's what we have so far.

1. Albion, The Eye- Tessai Tiefling [Demon Spawn] Oracle 1 Paladin 2
2. Mr Nevets- Rhaeodlaf Dwarf Wizard (Conjuror)
3. Mightypion- Anais LaVatte ?? Spirit Guide Oracle 2 Swashbuckler 1

If the cavalier problem was mount size and you allow it I'll do it :) I have never played either.

So I'm a bit of a sucker for old skool games, I ran a ruins of adventure game on these forums and am currently playing in a Dark Tower game.

Anyway The idea I had for this is to play an archeologist and really lea into that idea. He's been sent by a museum, to retrieve artefacts for their collection. Doesn't really matter which one although Absolom's Blakros Museum comes to mind, The Magaambya could also work.

Mechanically I'm thinking of human Gravedigger Investigator, with Shikigami style and a traveler's anytool, perhaps progressing to mortal usher.

Ok, I've come up with something to your build rules. A Monkey Goblin Mad Dog uBarbarian. A wild local that has an alligator companion. I can't ride until 4th level. He is going to be a reckless melee combatant using a lance.

I'll mention the same thing to you as I did to Anais. Animal companions are welcome. Getting them into some areas could be problematic

I've seen the Dark Tower games ad. It's up there in the top Dungeons of all time like Caverns of Thracia, White Plume Mountain, and a few others.

Caverns is like Castle Ravenloft with passages and sub levels that will enrage mapmakers ;)

Fortunately in pbp. The DM does that chore.
