DM Carbide |
What do y'all want to do?
Senja Kala |
Senja squeeeezes past Asvald's bearish bulk to the bend in the hallway, then scans the room ahead for signs of magic or any other unpleasant surprises.
Detect magic

Eva Baldursdóttir |
Eva, upon receiving the all-clear from Senja, moves quietly into the room and peers around for any pleasant surprises.
Perception: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (7) + 15 = 22
DM Carbide |
Senja detects an aura of magic in the room, and Torque picks out a faint tracery of runes on the floor around the central flame, and around the statue.
DM Carbide |
What are you going to do?
Senja Kala |
Senja steps into the room with Torque and Eva, as Asvald tries not to take too deep a breath in the narrow confines of the hallway. He studies the magic aura more closely, and tries to make sense of the runes in the floor.
Continue detect magic to identify strength and type of auras, see if I can make sense of the runes.
Knowledge (arcana) on auras: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (7) + 14 = 21
Linguistics on runes: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (13) + 16 = 29
DM Carbide |
There are elements of abjuration and conjuration in the aura. The runes are magical, and of a type unfamiliar to the wayang.
Eva Baldursdóttir |
Eva moves around the room, examining the walls and floors.
Perception: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (10) + 15 = 25
If nothing happens, let's move on.
DM Carbide |
Eva, could you trace out on the map where you're walking?
DM Carbide |
Thanks!
Eva makes her way cautiously around the room, alert for anything out of the ordinary. She notices a concealed door in the northeast alcove, but as she turns to rejoin the party a whoosh of air rushes through the chamber. On each wall, a torch ignites in its sconce, burning with a dark blue and purple flame. Three creatures appear in front of three of the alcoves, towering pillars of flame the same color as the torches. As soon as they appear they begin chanting in Ignan.

Senja has mage armor, as well as magic circle against evil that Torque cast on him. Torque also cast barkskin on Asvald, don't know if he has anything else up.
Since Senja speaks Ignan, can I tell the others what the creatures are saying? Wasn't sure if all actions should wait.
DM Carbide |
At the moment that the elementals appeared, something else happened. Eva's mage armor spell goes down, as does the magic circle against evil. Senja, you're able to translate the chanting for the rest of the party.
Everyone can act!

"These are shadowfire elementals not very nice critters!" Senja exclaims, alarmed to be standing so close to one. "They just chanted this: 'Our souls burn and die, our sacrifices call across the void, these souls burn and die to summon you, Yarrix, mistress of the Void!'"
Hoping to keep himself a little safer, Senja hurls a tangled mass of shadow at the nearest one!
Use Misfortune Hex on pink, DC 20 Will save.
Feel free to read the spoiler about the monsters, gang.

Carbide - did it take an AoO, or do I have the impression that it was waiting for me to attack before it attacked me? Or maybe I don't know. (Anyway, as you probably know, hexes are supernatural abilities, so they don't provoke.)
DM Carbide |
It was delaying, continuing to chant until/unless it was attacked. It treated the hex as an attack.

It was delaying, continuing to chant until/unless it was attacked. It treated the hex as an attack.
Well. Oops. They sure looked like they meant to do us harm.
DM Carbide |
Well, they sort of do, but they didn't attack you right away. After this is over remind me to tell you what happens if you leave them alone.
Asvald Bjornson |
Asvald emerges from overly-narrow hallway past his companions and into the center of the ritual chamber.

The elemental that Eva and Asvald attacked moves right through Eva to the other side of the room, where it resumes chanting. Eva and Asvald will get AoOs. The other two stop chanting. One moves into a flank with the other, again moving through solid obstacles.
Asvald, what's your current AC? It looks like the 25 includes your shield, but doesn't include a size penalty.
Immediately after the elementals act, the fire in the center of the room flares and belches forth a pair of gouts of flame. One impacts Senja and bursts. Senja, Torque, and Asvald, take 10 HP fire damage; DC 14 Reflex save for half damage. The other hits Eva and bursts for 4 HP, DC 14 Reflex save for half damage.

Senja decides he really does not like being so close to these creatures, and tries to safely get back to the nice, comfy hallway. He tosses a handful of shadowy caltrops at the feet of one of them, then hustles back to the corridor!

On the matter at hand, Senja's AC is 21, due to mage armor. Did the elemental's AoO still hit?
Edit: just checked our other players' post numbers, out of curiosity. We have some seriously heavy hitters here, with Feral (Asvald) at almost 60,000, and Daxter (Torque) at 30,000. We've got 161,000 posts all in, gang. Wow.

DM Carbide |
You're right, Senja--it missed you. I was going off of the AC in your header, and forgot about the mage armor. Also, congrats on hitting 20,000 posts!
Asvald, when you hit the elemental, in addition to the pain from the fire around it you also felt weak for a moment, but were able to resist whatever caused it.
Eva, despite the lack of the BoF buff you did manage to hit the elemental a couple of times. Give me a DC 22 Fort save or take 5 points STR damage.
Torque chops at the elemental furiously, but misses.
The fire in the center of the room flares again, emitting another fiery orb that strikes Torque and bursts, inflicting 18 points of fire damage on Torque, Asvald, and Senja, with a DC 14 Reflex save for half damage. The flames energize the wounded elemental, though, which regains some of the brightness leached from it by the multiple attacks from Asvald and Eva.
