Male Human Soulbolt 4

I'll take some healing. That pool o' healing is down to 55 hp.

"Alright, so that's everyone but... Urrax. Fantastic. The one person who could get us out of here quickly, and he's nowhere to be found."

I'll take some as well. Down to 43hp

"Thanks, Krathok. ... Now that it doesn't hurt so much, it's damn cold up here. We've got to get down and find shelter somewhere. At least it's morning, so it should warm up a little."

I take it we're above the treeline?

Was Urrax bringing us or sending us?
Spellcraft: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (13) + 14 = 27

You are definitely above the treeline. The landscape is as far as you can tell made of snow, ice, and rocks.

Moredrel:
Urrax was using a Greater Teleport, and should be here with you. More strangely, a Greater Teleport should never deposit you off target.

DM Caleth wrote:

Orion, your wings do prevent your fall, but you are not within arm's reach of anyone else, since you wound up spread out over an area of about 40'.

Sitting up, you see that you are in the desolate, high mountains of the South. It is morning and the season is fall, so the temperature is about 25 F and you are at about 6,000ft.

You will need to make the appropriate saves for temperature and altitude, each once every hour that you travel.

I thought we had held hands to teleport, but no matter.

Orion's wings unfurl and he lands on the ground with little effort. He grasped for his companions instinctively, but there were none within reach.

Fort save temp 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
Fort save Altitude 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6

Male Dwarf Rogue (scout) 4

I leave the healing pool depleted to 25.

After having his wounds mended by Krathok, Kjolmar sits up stiffly, thanking the half-orc through the collective. He looks around at the landscape, trying to find a landmark to determine their new location by.

Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16

Do I recognize these as lands I've been in before?

I'll see if I can find a cave or something for us to hole up in while we figure out what to do.

Perception 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13
Survival 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18

Kjolmar:
While the terrain around you certainly looks like home, you don't know exactly where you are. Maybe if you could get up on one of the surrounding ridges it might help.

Orion:
There is likely to be a cave in a nearby ridge, but it will take several hours to get there.

"There is probably a cave in the nearby ridge, but it'll take time to get there."

Male Dwarf Rogue (scout) 4

"I'm gonna get higher, t'see if I know where we are." With that said, Kjolmar climbs a nearby tree to get a better view.

Climb check: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24

There are not actually any trees around, or much vegetation of any kind apart from some rather sickly looking grass.

Male Dwarf Rogue (scout) 4

Then get on top of the nearest hill of other high place. :P

Half-Orc Barbarian 1

Krathok takes another 11 healing, leaving me with 14/3 = 4 PP left.

Krathok looks to the others for guidance, he is a survivor - but gauges that the others will have more skill in discerning how best to go about it in the cold.

You set off for the highest of the nearby peaks surrounding you. After an hour of hiking, you are off of the snow in the valley and into the relatively clear and barren rock of the surrounding peaks. After another hour, you reach the crest of the ridge and can look over at the other side.

You see more of the same empty terrain that surrounds you stretching out to the high mountains on the horizon.

Perception DC 15:
You can see a plume of smoke rising over the lip of another ridge on the horizon, maybe a day or a day and a half away.

You should make two checks each for cold and altitude. DC 15 for the first hour and DC 16 for the second hour.

DM Rolls:

[ooc]Orion:1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9
Kjolmar:1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10

Male Human Soulbolt 4

Perception
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14

Fort Saves
Altitude:
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19

Cold:
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (4) + 4 = 8
1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17

Survival to give +2 on fort saves vs Cold:
1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9

Male Dwarf Rogue (scout) 4

Perception check I made before good? Also, do I recognize the landscape? If not exact location, at least a region.

Fortitude 1 for cold: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19

Fortitude 2 for cold: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14

Survival for +2 on cold saves: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (16) + 5 = 21

Fortitude 1 for altitude: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16

Fortitude 2 for altitude: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 = 17

The +2 from Survival will be just enough for me to avoid nonlethal damage. :)

Kjolmar:
The area you are in is somewhat far from your clan's usual lands. I imagine the dwarves as mostly nomadic and culturally a little bit Mogolian or Tibetan. In this area, however are the few iron mines where the meager supply of the metal comes from, but you do not know very much about mines, since your clan probably mostly herded yaks. (Which are the main domesticated animal in dwarven culture.)

You should make a new perception check since your first was from the middle of the valley and not the ridge.

Half-Orc Barbarian 1

Fort - Cold: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (9) + 5 = 14 and 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15
Fort - Alt: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10 and 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15

Not sure how much damage I need to take.

Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (17) + 4 = 21

Krathok points out the distant plume of smoke to the others.

Male Human Soulbolt 4

Kjolmar, with a roll that high, you can also give everyone else a +2 versus cold. It's DC 15, +1 person per point you go over 15. So... +2s for everybody, meaning Krathok makes both of his saves now, and it doesn't help enough for mine. Now, to see Orion's saves.

Cold 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 5 + 2 = 18
altitude 1d20 + 5 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 5 + 2 = 15

Quodak is correct about the +2 bonus.
Anyone who failed a save v. altitude is fatigued untill you spend an hour resting and breathing deeply.
Anyone who failed a save v. cold takes 1d6 subdual damage and is fatigued untill you can warm up.

Male Human Soulbolt 4

1d6 ⇒ 1 Nonlethal

30/30, 1 Nonlethal, Fatigued.

After the first hour, Quodak seems much more tired, but pushes through nevertheless.

"We n-need a f-fire. And q-quick. We'll f-freeze to d-death out h-here if w-we don't m-make one. And a sh-shelter too."

Cold 1:1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 3 + 2 = 24
Cold 2:1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 3 + 2 = 18

Altitude 1:1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 3 + 2 = 22
Altitude 2:1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 3 + 2 = 22

Moredrel keeps moving, not seeming to bothered by the cold or altitude.

"We'll need something to burn. Not a lot of that up on the ridge lines. Unless Kjolmar's got a better idea where we are, we should head for the smoke. Keep moving until we find something. Try to stay down in the valleys when we can. It's easier to breathe and even the snow can be some shelter."

Is there any tree cover visible in the valleys? Or is this whole area too high?

There are no trees, and where you are right now is pretty flat and desolate. I will try to find a good picture to convey the mood.

"We should head to the caves and quickly. "

Male Dwarf Rogue (scout) 4

New Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
I'll assume this is a failure.

After heading to the highest point and looking around, Kjolmar comes back to the group. "Aye, headin' to the smoke'll be our best choice fer livin', as there ain't much to burn in these parts. Hope none'a you was too fond a that warm weather." He says with a grin. "Anyhoo, I don' know where we are precisely, but we still got a job to do. We can fin' out whether tha' smoke belongs to friend or foe, but afore long we'll be needin' to set off south, to be makin' it to the dragon's kin afore his enemies do."

If you started walking now and were able to make all of your fortutide saves for a forced march without knocking yourself out, you could reach the general vicinity of the fire by the morning. Kjolmar is correct that there is virtually no fuel for a fire around.

Here and here are pictures of what I imagine the landscape you are in to look like.

Male Dwarf Rogue (scout) 4

Okay, since it's too far away to reach before nightfall, Kjolmar does not recommend we head straight for it. Instead, we should find a place to bunker down before nightfall.

Male Human Soulbolt 4

"Let's get to those caves Orion mentioned, eh? We can decide what to do after we get some rest."

"I don't see anything else we can do. Keep moving as long as we can. See if we can find the caves or any other shelter along the way. Maybe dig into the snow if we get desperate."

Quodak Milner wrote:

"Let's get to those caves Orion mentioned, eh? We can decide what to do after we get some rest."

"It'll take a couple of hours, but I don't see a better option."

Orion leads the way towards the ridge that probably has a cave or two in it.

You find a single cave in the rocks, which winds back a ways into the hillside. Inside the cave it is slightly warmer, but still cold, you will have to find some sort of way to warm up, magical or otherwise.

Perception DC 10:
It appears that there is interment activity in the cave, as if something lived there, over what seems like a long period of time, but it seems like that activity has dropped off lately.

In the back of the cave, you find two old bodies essentially mummified by the dry and the cold. The first is a half-orc dressed in layers of fur and armor with a thick reddish fur cloak. He does not seem to have any weapons, but carries a large bronze object shaped like a flaming axe.

The second body lies at the opposite side of the cavern and is a dwarf clad in armor of a strange dull grey material streaked and coated with red. When touched, the armor crumbles into pieces. He too has furs and lying just outside his dead grasp is a warhammer made of the same dull grey material, and with strange designs carved on the head.

Orion and Krathok:
You recognize the flaming axe as the symbol carried by all the worshipers of Ramlor that you have seen (even though you don't really know what a holy symbol is)

Kjolmar:
You can tell that the hammer is a very important item, since the symbols are names of famous Dwarves all from the same clan, a clan distantly related to yours. (The dwarves have a written langauge, but they feel that it is too important to use for anything other than writing he names of ancestors. You can probably only recognize the names because it is a clan related to yours.)

Detect Magic:
The Cloak and Hammer are both magical.

Half-Orc Barbarian 1

Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 4 = 9

Looking over the bodies, Krathok's immediate eyes are drawn to the furs... furs that would retain heat. Noticing the bronzed axe symbol he points and speaks "Ramlor" passing on to the collective Half-Orc was in worship.

Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (16) + 8 = 24
"Something has lived here, on and off, but less lately. Hopefully, it will not return tonight. We have little choice."

"Neither his prayers nor the furs saved them. Still, maybe the furs can help us. There is magic in the cloak and the hammer. I will see what it is."

Cloak: Spellcraft: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (6) + 14 = 20
Hammer: Spellcraft: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (6) + 14 = 20

Perception 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (16) + 6 = 22
"Something lives here. We should keep watches. If it comes back we can kill it and eat it." Orion says determined

I know it's desolate, but is their anything from the landscape that will burn (srcubbrush, etc)for a fire? Survival 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6

If there is nothing in the landscape to burn:

"If we don't warm up we're going to die. As harsh as it sounds we need something to burn. The landscape is desolate and the bodies are dry and mummified." Orion looks at the group waiting for them to come to the same conclusion he has.

Male Human Soulbolt 4

Perception1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24

Quodak, too will look for things to burn.

Survival1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16

If nothing to burn, and Orion says what he spoilered:
"Very well. Let's remove anything useful, and get to setting them up. It's going to stink, but it's what we have."

You can find enough fuel to start a fire but probably not enough yo burn through the night.

In addition to the Cloak and Hammer, you can get maybe three sets of cold weather clothes out of the furs worn by the bodies.

Moredrel:
The hammer is a +1 Warhammer and the Cloak gives a constant Endure Elements effect and can cast Shield of Faith once per day.

"The cloak will help whoever is suffering worst from the cold. We can pass it around as needed.

He'll also describe the rest of what he learned.

DM Caleth wrote:

** spoiler omitted **

Orion takes the cloak and says "I'll go collect what I can find to burn. Bundle up and I'll be right back."

After removing all items from the bodies Orion puts one near the entrance so the smoke will go out of the cave instad of in and the other he sets back to keep it dry for use when the first is spent. He concentrates on the bodies a moment and snaps his fingers (spark). If they're as dry as I think they are the one by the entrance should sputter to life and begin to burn slowly (bodies are dense even when mummified).

Wearing the cloak he then walks out into the cold to gather what firewood he can.

Half-Orc Barbarian 1

Krathok stays in the cave, salvaging a coat of furs from the half-orc - further shielding him from the cold.

Taking one of those cold weather clothing sets.

The bodies do ignite and provide a fire, albeit with a large amount of particularly foul, oily smoke. With the combination of the fire, the furs and the interior of the cave retaining heat, you are just warm enough to rest comfortably.

What are your watches for the night?

Male Human Soulbolt 4

I'll take either first or last watch. Also, does the fire mean that those who took nonlethal damage can begin healing that? If so, in an hour, I'll have that single hit point back.

Whatever watch I'm on, I'll manifest my mind bolt, ready psychic strike, and stay psionically focused.

Around the fire, you can heal the nonlethal damage. Also after sitting and breathing deeply for an hour or so, you can clear the fatigue from the altitude.

Presumably;

Orion returns with an armful of scraggly scrubbrush that he places in the cave to keep dry and use as fuel as needed.

SInce he's wearing the cloak Orion is unfazed by the cold. Orion survey's the room to see if anyone is is bad shape, thus could make better use of the cloak than he. With his wings Orion is not sure if a cold weather outfit will fit him or do him much good with his wings.

Is anyone is bad shape from the cold or wounded?

Male Dwarf Rogue (scout) 4

Unless more checks are needed, I'll be fine.

Kjolmar wishes he had something to eat as he hunkers down, helping to build the fire when that's being done. He eyes the warhammer often, but doesn't make a move to take it. He hasn't been trained in it's use before, and another of the group might put it to use against their enemies.

Would Kjolmar know anything about scrounging up food in this environment? Any edible mosses he knows about or anything?
Survival, if necessary: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (13) + 5 = 18

Male Human Soulbolt 4

I've got 1 nonlethal, and am thereby fatigued from the cold. Other than that, I'm fine.

Moredrel is so far unhurt by the cold. He'd prefer to take last watch and wake early to prepare spells before taking his turn.

In the interest of getting things moving, I am going to say that nothing bothers you in the cave during the night. After resting, you all are no longer fatigued from the altitude, and heal the appropriate amount of cold damage.

DM Caleth wrote:

Unless someone has specific need (like they're frost bitten) Orion will hang onto the cloak. He has some mechanical issues with wearing cold weather gear due to his wings.

We also level, IIRC

Yep.
