DM Caleth's Bronze Age: An Inheritance of Dragons (Inactive)

Game Master Saint Caleth

In an ancient world, a group of recently freed slaves join the fight against the tyrannical Dragon God, possibly to end his reign forever...

After following the planned path of the procession, you find an alleyway which seems like the best place for the ambush.

Ambush Site Overview
The two buildings on the north edge of the alley are 15' tall, and the red roofed buildings to the south are 20' tall with 50' tall towers. The west edge of the alley is bounded by the wall of a villa, about 70' tall. The street is not actually a dead end, but there is some sort of wooden structure blocking the way, which seems to be fallen scaffolding. To the east is the exit to the main avenue where hopefully the procession will enter the alley if everything goes according to plan.

Orion offers to wait on one of the rooftops so he can jump down on the enemy. He can also carry someone down if they're not too heavy.

Moredrel will find a place near Orion, so he can Enlarge him before the fight.

What's the scale on that map? 5' hexes? 30' wide would be a very large alley.

The map is a 5' grid. You can start placing yourselves.

Male Human Soulbolt 4

Quodak will be on the northern building on the right. He should be able to jump down if he needs to, and he should be able to fire over just about everyone, except maybe an enlarged Orion.

Male Dwarf Rogue (scout) 4

Kjolmar suggests that most of the party stay atop the northern building on the right, if not everyone. He's confident he can make such a jump without suffering for it.

Any reply to my question to Belisarius last post?

Half-Orc Barbarian 1

Krathok will remain at ground level, hidden behind sufficient wreckage that he is out of sight.

I assume that Erie will want to stay on the roof too.

Does this look good for positioning.

Are you prepared? I can have one of my men bring you a net to trap the dragon if you wish. Belisarius prepares to carry out his part of the plan.

Since I think that everyone understands Draconic at least at this point, I am not going to bother to translate/spoiler it anymore

Positioning looks good to me.

"Who am I carrying down with me when I jump?" Orion asks.

Through various mind melds I think everyone can understand draconic.

I'm fine with the location

"Please do bring the net. And do you know when the procession will be here?"

Moredrel will cast Mage Armor on himself before the encounter, either based on Belisarius's reply or when we here them approaching, then cast Enlarge Person on Orion just before they enter the alley. That shouldn't break our cover, right? We will make sure Orion is still hidden when he grows.

Orion will cast mage armor at some point before also he'll cast Infernal healing just before he jumps down. Also he'll rage as he jumps down.

The enlargement will make it a little bit harder for Orion to stay hidden, since the roof has a lip at about waist height which you would have to be hiding behind.

You take position and wait for the procession to pass. An hour or two pass before one of the dragonborn soldiers returns with a net. The procession is beginning. It should reach here in approximately half an hour. Be ready, we will do our part. He informs you before climbing down and slinking his way out of the alley.

Is there any preparation you want to undertake in the hour before the procession arrives. You can expect it within about a 10 minute window as you hear the sound of drums and horns growing louder

Half-Orc Barbarian 1

Positioning is good with me

Krathok has no preparations to make, he instead sits with his back to the wall. Trusting that he will know when the procession approaches by sound or through mental signaling.

Female Elf Scout 1/Fighter (Targeteer) 2

Looks fine.

Erie nods at Belisarius, before drawing her massive bow and inspecting her arrows.

"Damn me, the alley is too big. I'm going to have to be down there or I won't be able to reach most of them. I don't like that idea. Or I could just stay up here and rely on spells at least for the start.

"I'd like to open with Glitterdust, so if you jump down before I cast, leave me a good target area."

"Cast your spell and I will jump down just after it hits." (Holding an action to just after spell is cast.)

Quodak will center himself prior to their arrival.

Positioning looks good. Sorry for the silence, I don't have internet/cable at my house.

As the sound of the procession gets louder, finally reaching the avenue just to your left. Suddenly there is the crackling of lightning and an explosion followed by the screaming of the crowd and the shouts of the guards on the procession. Belisarius' diversion has started, and the sound of several running feet turns towards the alley you are in. You see a curtained off golden litter come down the alley carried by three elaborately plumed human guards. The litter is preceded by a half-dragon in even more elaborate armor with a drawn sword in his hand. The dragon is presumably in the litter.

Roll initiative and you may take your surprise round, or you can make stealth checks if you want to lure the litter closer before striking.

Initial Map

DM Rolls:

[ooc]Initiative:1d20 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9

Female Elf Scout 1/Fighter (Targeteer) 2

Initiative: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (12) + 6 = 18
Stealth: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23

Erie hangs back, hiding behind the parapet. She does, however, appear to concentrate carefully for a moment before snapping back to the present (activating the Travel Devotion feat).

Male Human Soulbolt 4

Initiative:1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24
Stealth:1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27

Quodak waits for the approaching enemies to get closer.

No, such a waste of rolls!

Orion shifts behind the parapet and casts a spell (infernal healing)

stealth 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9 (possibly one less if he's enlarged)

Initiative: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (14) + 5 = 19
Stealth (untrained): 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6
Sorry for blowing everyone's stealth. You had to know someone would.

Mage Armor went up as soon as we could hear the procession. Enlarge on Orion as it reached the avenue.

Moredrel will ready an action to cast Glitterdust on the group as soon as they see us or when they start to pass us.

The litter and its guards proceed cautiously down the alley, with the half-dragon watching for threats. You can clearly see him motion to the other guards. They quietly set down the litter, draw their swords and move to surround the litter, swords pointing outwards against danger. The half-dragon points straight at Moredrel. It appears that the large amount of havok being caused by Belisarius keeps them from fleeing back the way they came.

OK, now roll initiative if you haven't already and take your surprise round.

Kjolmar, Orion and Krathok need initiatives

Map

DM Rolls:
[ooc]Perception:1d20 + 0 ⇒ (15) + 0 = 15
1d100 + 15 ⇒ (62) + 15 = 77

On his initiative Orion will jump down at an angle and glide to the ground approximately 40' from the half dragon.

edit: that'd be F9 or F10

Female Elf Scout 1/Fighter (Targeteer) 2

Erie steps to B12 and fires an arrow at the half dragon.

Attack: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14
Damage: 1d10 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12

EDIT: Is the roof of the building to the west higher or lower than the roof we are situated on? If so, which? Is it flat or sloped? I ask because this may affect Erie's actions next turn.

Seeing that there is no more use in hiding, Moredrel rises and casts:
"Pulveris Species"

Spellcraft DC 17:
Glitterdust. Will Save DC 17. Centered on the dragon's litter, F11. It should cover all of them.

Male Dwarf Rogue (scout) 4

Initiative: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22

Also delaying until Glitterdust is cast.

Once Moredrel's spell goes off, Kjolmar jumps off the roof, falling silently through the air into a nimble roll. He draws his weapon as he moves quickly to the closest blinded guard.

Acrobatics DC 15: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (14) + 7 = 21

Taking a move to get down, then a move to the closest guard blinded by Glitterdust, drawing the short sword along the way. I'm looking to get sneak damage on one of them. I'll assume I have the net, since I requested it?

Erie wrote:

The next roof over is about 5' higher than the roof you are on. Both are flat with a waist height lip.

Half-Orc Barbarian 1

Initiative: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21

Krathok remains in cover, though draws his dagger and stands ready - monitoring the opening gambit through his link to the collective.

Male Human Soulbolt 4

Quodak will 5-foot step to B13 and attack the nearest guard, once the glitterdust is in effect.

Attack:1d20 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
Damage:1d10 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10

Moredrel's opening salvo of magic strikes, spurring you into action as a shower of golden sparks fountain into the air around the litter. All of the guards except for one of the humans reel, trying to scrape the enchantment from the their eyes. The litter thrashes from side to side as the wyrmling within it writhes around, presumably also caught in the spell.

Erie's shot fails to do any lasting damage to the half-dragon through his armor and scales.

Quodak throws a quick shot but fails to connect with the staggering solder, instead shattering the paving stones at his feet.

Orion, the squares you specified are in the glitterdust so I moved you as close as I could without you being in the spell.

Initiative:
Quodak
Kjolmar
Krathok
Moredrel
Erie
Orion

Round 1 and Quodak's turn.
Map

DM Rolls:

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12
1d20 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21
1d20 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3

ROUND 1
WHen my turn comes 5' step (e10) to full attack the one that is now flanked with Grehelm in E11.

Two handed heavy mace 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (19) + 10 = 292d6 + 10 ⇒ (2, 1) + 10 = 13

TO hit breakdown (+2 BAB +7 STR -1SIze +2 flank) That's for me as much as anyone else.

Male Human Soulbolt 4

Round 1

Quodak will fire again at the half-dragon.

Attack:1d20 + 8 ⇒ (9) + 8 = 17
Damage:1d10 + 7 + 1d8 ⇒ (6) + 7 + (4) = 171d8 is from Psychic Strike.

Quodak will then prepare his psychic strike again.Move Action

Female Elf Scout 1/Fighter (Targeteer) 2

As a swift action (due to Travel Devotion) Erie dashes to B15, launching two arrows at the half-dragon once she gets there.

Attack 1: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
Damage: 1d10 + 5 + 1d6 ⇒ (6) + 5 + (2) = 13
Attack 2: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20
Damage: 1d10 + 5 + 1d6 ⇒ (4) + 5 + (2) = 11

Some careful calculation convinces me I'll be within 30', so:

Moredrel steps to the edge of the roof (B14) and gives the Evil Eye to the Half-dragon and then Cackles madly.
-2 penalty to saves, Will DC 17

(FYI I'll be on vacation Sep 1-6. I'll still check in at least once a day unless something unfortunate happens. Just wanted to give a heads up.)

Half-Orc Barbarian 1

Round 1:

Krathok makes his way from his hiding position to where he can view proceedings more closely.

Move to E,17

Male Dwarf Rogue (scout) 4

Rolls for my previous attack:

Attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19
Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Sneak Damage:
2d6 ⇒ (2, 5) = 7

Kjolmar comes out of his roll, stabbing the guard before him as Orion's mighty cub connects with the man's head. Either blow would have felled the man, but with both in combination, he falls, dead before he hits the ground.

Erie's second shot whizzes past Kjolmar and plants itself deeply in the half-dragon's shoulder. The creature roars and leaps towards teh source of the arrow on bony tattered black wings. He hits Erie, sending her staggering back. Bull Rushed 10'. The half-dragon provokes an AoO from Quodak and Moredrel if he is armed.

The wyrmling continues to writhe in fear. It spits its acid breath randomly in its panic before flopping out of the litter onto the ground, unable to take off without sight. (3 acid damage to Kjolmar DC 13 half.)

The last guard pulls a horn from the litter and blows it, a deep carrying sound issues forth along with a cloud of impenetrable smoke. The rest of the guards from the procession hear this but most of them are too distracted by Belisarius' distraction in the form of arson and riot to answer the call.

Round 2

DM Rolls:

Half-Dragon Will:1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9
Half-Dragon Will:1d20 + 0 ⇒ (19) + 0 = 19
Half-Dragon Bull Rush:1d20 + 6 ⇒ (17) + 6 = 23
Tellax Will:1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12
Direction:1d8 ⇒ 2
Breath Damage:2d6 ⇒ (1, 2) = 3
Guard 3:1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
Guard 2:1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

Half-Orc Barbarian 1

Round 2:

If I can see the guy who is blowing the horn:

Krathok narrows his eyes at the horn blower and yells "Laat Val" and pushes the force of his mind upon him.

Manifest Collapse power; DC 15 Fort save or he falls prone

Otherwise, I'll delay action

Male Human Soulbolt 4

What was the outcome of Quodak's attack? He should have gone first, and if he hit, he dealt a pretty good hit.

Quodak will move to B15, attacking as well, which will not provoke an attack of opportunity, as he has Close-Range Expert.

Attack: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (7) + 9 = 16
Damage:1d10 + 5 + 1d8 ⇒ (4) + 5 + (7) = 16

Moredrel leaps back from the half-dragon. 5' step to A15
His wild laughter stops as he coughs, retches and vomits up a swarm of spiders onto the half dragon.Vomit Swarm
After spitting out the last spider from his mouth, the laughter begins again. Cackle

Swarm Attack damage: 1d6 ⇒ 4 + distraction DC 11 + poison (1d2 Str) DC 11

The half-dragon gets a AoO on the swarm, but it's immune to weapons...

Moredrel should have moved to B14 last turn. If he did, he'll cast first and step back to A13 instead.

Two handed heavy mace to guy on F10 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (15) + 8 = 232d6 + 10 ⇒ (3, 4) + 10 = 17

Female Elf Scout 1/Fighter (Targeteer) 2

Erie will tumble to -A14, firing one arrow at the half dragon when she gets there. She will then move (swift action w/ travel devotion) to B11.

Acrobatics: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (10) + 8 = 18
Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25
Damage: 1d10 + 5 ⇒ (2) + 5 = 7
Additional Skirmish Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 1

Male Dwarf Rogue (scout) 4

Reflex save for half: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (8) + 6 = 14

Also, was the half-dragon blinded? Might be hard for him to fly too.

Orion swings his magically enlarged club again, sending a second guard to the ground, head staved in and dying.

The guard blowing the horn notices that no help will be coming to answer his alarm. He reaches into the litter again, staggering slightly as the weight of Krathok's will pushes down on him, but he rises, a wand in his hand and fires a blazing line of fire at Erie. He looks surprised but glad that this particular desperate plan worked. (13 fire damage to Erie)

The Half-dragon grunts as Quodak's bolt of force hits him in the chest but fails to do any lasting damage, stumbling into the path of Erie's arrow which loges in his shoulder. He begins moving for the attack when Moredrel's swarm washes over him. He emerges from the swarm, clearly on his last legs and begins swiping wildly at Quodak with his claws. hitting once for 8 slashing damage.

You an hear the wyrmling continue to scream in terror, and it rolls back into the cloud which still hangs in the air and disappears.

Map. Tell me if I made a mistake in positioning.

Half-Orc Barbarian 1

Round 3:

Reaching out to the collective, he feels one of their number in pain. Bellowing to the sky, he concentrates through his empathic link, sending waves of warm energy to reinvigorate Quodak.

Manifest Body Adjustment and transfer all healing through the collective to Quodak 1d12 ⇒ 4

13/17 PP left

Moredrel steps back again to A-12, then begins casting: "Aquila Summon Caelestis"

Spellcraft DC: 16:
