Beyond the rim... there dwells madness -- Moff Rimmer DMs the Planes

Game Master Moff Rimmer

Something is happening that threatens the existence of the planes themselves. Our heroes have been chosen and thrown into things to set things right -- are they up for the challenge?

I saw evidence of life of Urizen. Not a whole lot of life, from the looks of it, but better than nothing! The cats are either trying to heal him or steal his breath.

I'll be back tomorrow. We spent a lot of time driving in the rain, and that made the trip longer.

On the plus side, we saw Sucker Punch, which was a decent movie, if somewhat "video gamey".

update:
Sorry for being a bit on the quiet side (and yeah, how nice of the gal to take a picture of me while I'm conked out on the couch with the cats, eh? Heh). My sinuses have been hammering hard where my eustachian tubes are clogged up, so I'm more hard of hearing than usual. I'm so full of mucus that when I wake up in the morning, it's seeping through the eyes and 'glueing' them shut. Gross, right?

While school doesn't begin until three, I'm not officially registered because the financial aid has been dragging their asses, so I have to get myself cleaned up and medicated to get to campus and wrap that up and then go get my books and then head to class. Tomorrow, it looks like I'm going to head to a free clinic to hopefully get some antibiotics to treat this as I can't afford to go to a regular clinic since the gov't cut off COBRA last fall. Pain in the ass.

I'll catch up here shortly. Thanks for being tolerant.

Sounds awful. I think I'm going to stat the dreaded Urizen sickness.

Seriously, hope the clinic is able to help.

Don't feel bad about the pic, Uri. We certainly all believe you now if we didn't before.

Good luck getting antibiotics. Once the neti pot fails, I'm at a loss.

Moff:
OK, so I've been looking at two orders. The Old Order looks about right for Pinna's personal beliefs, but that doesn't mean it's how she was trained. I'm actually thinking she belongs to the Broken Ones with some level of doubt in there. It's not the best fit, but it's more interesting.

Spoiler:
Ilmater, huh? I'm not finding a whole lot of specific information on many monk orders. I liked what you had previously about how true power or ability comes from yourself and not from the gods -- yet there is no doubting the gods' powers.

Let's work with both. How about if your order sees, with the church of Ilmater, a common overall goal. Towards that end, the two generally work very closely towards alleviating suffering, helping those who need it, protecting those who can't and so on. But, while your order might give some amount of reference to Ilmater, your order almost sees the church as an equal rather than something to worship.

Does that fit?

orders:
Orders were listed on the first page of the monk class in the Forgotten Realms book, p 24 if I remember correctly. It was brief.

I find it interesting that there is nothing (that I could quickly find) under Ilmater about the Broken Ones.

I was trying to find something that worked with what you had mentioned the other day. Does my modification/addition work with your concept?

Well, first day of school wasn't so bad, but it would have helped if I had the money for my books. I was doped up with enough Mucinex DM & Sudafed to hang on through the day. My gal went to the physician earlier this afternoon and she has an URI and was days away from bronchitis, so they sent her home with Z-Pak along with cough syrup and a prescription decongestant and instructed to stay home tomorrow. I'm much worse off than her, so I'm going to see what's my malady tomorrow morning.

I'm going to read through and try to catch up. But I may be a bit sporadic and go with the flow unless I see something glaring.

It's okay. I imagine Vassago would be inclined to let others do the talking in the temple of Lathander.

I hope you and your lady feel better, Urizen.

What are you going to do for books until you get the money? :S

The rebate check arrived Saturday. I deposited it in the bank today. If it doesn't clear tomorrow, I'm sure the better half will spot me on a credit card. By my calculations, it's going to come to $450'ish. o.O First day of school - the bookstore is a madhouse. I'm told that if you go the next day, there's likely a bunch of folks returning books from the day before, so perhaps I can score a couple used ones that weren't marked up by a schizophrenic. :P

Gatheringing information is good! Is RP sufficient, or should we do GI checks to proceed mechanically?

RP is sufficient for most things. If you are stuck or are searching in a library, we'll look for GI rolls.

I was trying to be funny. Couldn't think of anything else quickly at the top of my head to substitute Duck, Duck, Goose.

It's alright. I'm generally new to pbp as well and I'm a little off track / kilter due to being ill and now just starting school. Hopefully the medication will put things in better perspective the next several days once they've done their job and I develop a pattern with how I'll be doing school related assignments. "The church doesn't have much of a direct presence in Mechanus, so I'm not sure how much aid I can be toward that end. Since you are still looking for information about something that came from Mechanus, your best bet would be to look for information at the Guvners' library on Mechanus. However, you do seem to be new to Sigil, correct? I'm not sure that now would be a good time to go to the City Courts. With this new lightning happening, it's putting a lot of people on edge and the Harmonium has made even more arrests than usual. And besides, there's all the red tape you need to fill out just to even enter the building."

"It might be faster to get on your quest if you go to the Lazz School of Vivid Unpleasantness." (C40 in the Clerk's Ward.) "It's a school that teaches rather unusual forms of 'art'. Not really my thing, but it seems popular enough. The front door is a portal that takes people to the outskirts of The Fortress -- what the Guvners call 'The Fortress of Disciplined Enlightenment'. Kind of ironic really since the Guvners typically don't go anywhere near that place." He hands you a small three sided pyramid made of iron. "That is the 'key' that will activate the portal. It will only operate in this way during the 'twilight hours' of Sigil."

"Hopefully that will help you on your way. Is there anything else that I can assist you with?"

"The Fortress" is a library of sorts on Mechanus. It's all very confusing...

But on a serious note, I'm in a bit of a conundrum. Exactly what are we wanting to do and/or accomplish. I feel like we're at a loss of direction and probably need to find some way to get steered on track. Sometimes ideas get lost in translation when doing a pbp versus the interaction you get when playing in person.

Anyone want to talk it out for the rest of us? Aside from RL stuff (which I'm as guilty of), I'd hate to things stall for too long.

Let's see. I can try to recap or at least break down what you know (in theory).

Back in Toril, you were thrown together to save the multiverse.
There is a device that seems to be able to rewrite the planes with a certain alignment in mind.
The life that inhabits Vortic's sword helped to steal the device from Mechanus for fear of it being used.
One member of the group he was with betrayed the group and stole the group and is using it to rewrite things his way.
No one really had a chance to look at the device before it was stolen, so figuring out how to shut it down would probably be a good idea.
Sigil has doorways that pretty well lead ... anywhere.
There are a number of factions in Sigil (and the planes?). The "Guvners" is one faction.
The Guvners are in charge of the City Courts and also (supposedly) have a large library where they keep records of pretty much EVERYTHING.
The angel (I forgot to give him a name -- anyone want to name him?) at the temple said that finding a gateway in the City Courts would be difficult at best and gave you an alternative way to get to Mechanus.
Tripicus is a scholar of sorts and while he specializes in "prime material planes", he knows a fair amount of all the planes. (Just not necessarily what devices are made there or what shuts them off.)
You were followed by a yellow skinned humanoid who you are (rightfully) suspicious of who offered the group sanctuary at a specific location.
The alternate gateway (that you know of) is at a school of "arts".
The lightning that is happening around Sigil isn't normal at all and started just a few days ago.

Did I miss anything? I think that's about it.

It sounds like the alternative way to Mechanus would keep our profile lower. That's the one that Moff posted and bolded a couple of posts ago. One of us (probably Lanwin) has the iron pyramid that is the key to the portal, and we know where it is. We don't know if it gets us near the Guvner's library on Mechanus, but it does get it to someplace they call "The Fortress of Disciplined Enlightenment." Which sounds like a prison to me. >.<

Wow! I completely missed that one.

I can't speak for everyone else, but I just feel like I'm stalled with so many options but unsure how to proceed. Whom do you trust, and how sure can one be they're going in the right direction? I mean, the multiverse is big and who can really prepare properly for certain terrain? If I could click a pair of ruby red slippers, wrinkle my nose, and become a handy-dandy horizon walker ... Ha!

I would love to personally seize the moment and take the lead, but I confess I'm watching to see if someone else has a better grasp as to perceive what's going on to take what's the best route and I'll simply improvise from there.

Well, I did want to get across that the multiverse is "big. I mean really big. No one knows just how mind-bogglingly big it really is..."

Actually, I did want people to feel kind of like little fish in a big pond. Things should get a little more focused pretty soon. (And then you'll be the "big fish".) And depending on how things go, I might be able to provide a guide/cohort soon -- if you'd like...

Spoiler:
One of my first memories of gaming was ... the tree. I don't even know where we were going or why. We were supposed to go into this tree to get ... somewhere. The tree had an opening and we could easily fit inside. We could go up or down. We went up about twenty feet (more than made sense for the tree) and decided to turn around. We went down about twenty feet and decided to turn around.

We spent the entire gaming night trying to figure out how to get to the next part through this tree.

And the DM had it set up so that if we went 25 feet in either direction, we would be transported to where we were supposed to go.

Without meaning to, I feel like I've given you ... the tree.
