Beyond the rim... there dwells madness -- Moff Rimmer DMs the Planes

Game Master Moff Rimmer

Something is happening that threatens the existence of the planes themselves. Our heroes have been chosen and thrown into things to set things right -- are they up for the challenge?

Did I even get my next response right to remedy the previous one? I read Taig's posting of 'E.' and I'm utterly confused with the quick game of cards comment. :P

The taig equivalent of "bump"?

So my question is -- Who's going to be the first one to figure it out?

By the way, the device he gave E. ... I couldn't find a good online picture of it. Although it's on the cover of the Manual of the Planes if you have a copy of it.

I think that you've got it. But then you should know how to activate the device.

The "compass" that E. has. I assume it's for planar travel and thus gets them a way out of where they are now.

You can try that -- or you can look at what Viserys said to do with it. ;-)

With the sinus meds I'm doped up on right now ... Yoda, understand I do. Viserys? Verily, not much so. :) I read the DM hint, but I didn't gather much from it other than the Spellcraft check done as a result.

I'm probably missing something obvious that once I'm struck with a clue-by-four...

Sorry about that. I figured that you and taig would be the ones to attack this head on.

You must love springtime...

You would have easily been able to tell that it started moving as soon as he cast detect magic.

It was only made worse with the fact that my Tuesday night group where 5 out of 7 are smokers. Indoors. In the basement. It began last Tuesday evening...

And she's caught it from me and has stayed home today. Fun times!

I can infer that it's magical by observing what Taig might have done. I fail to see how that informs me how to use it, which is why I asked about UMD.

I'm feeling dense right now. Heh.

It's ok. Blame the drugs.

The device is essentially powered by a detect magic spell. Before casting that, it's basically little better than a chunk of metal. After casting detect magic, it seems to start working. Looking through the scope offers some information similar in some respects to normal detect magic but specific to portals.

"First" good or bad? Coming up with something "the same but different" for a group where a number of the players are DMs can be a little challenging. I'm hoping to throw in something every so often that either no one is really expecting or that will hopefully cause you to look at things just a little differently.

It was creative, actually. Simple. We also have to keep in mind as we start jumping around from planar realms, the laws of magic and/or logic may not be as it seems when attempting to perform a task or cast a spell.

Hard to do with a halfling or a gnome. My first thought is the Divine Power spell. Gives you a bonus to hit and damage and some extra HPs. It was nerfed from 3.5 (probably rightly so, the +6 str was a little much on some builds).

If your str or dex was higher, I'd recommend Power Attack or Piranha Strike (Sargava: The Lost Colony, which I believe Moff now has). You can never go wrong with weapon focus for the bonus to hit, IMO.

Edit: I'm also going to say Prayer spell, for the bonus to hit and damage. It also affects eveyone in the area, and penalizes the enemy. I see you've already got Divine Favor, that'll work very well.

Which should translate to -- "The City of Doors will need a drawing of a door to proceed."

This right after -- "Just portals to understand need operate that keys." Which translates to -- "Just understand that portals need keys to operate."

And somehow this translated to -- "We need to draw a door on the wall."

What's "PMs"?

Male Mostly Human

Hey, I give CH points for ingenuity. Besides, drawing a door on the wall is essentially giving you a drawing of a door. ;-)

Given that this is the first device any of us have come across that operates by detect magic and we seem to be in a location that appears to be chaotic, anything's possible.

At one instance, I almost thought there was a Time Bandits vibe going on and thought to myself, 'ooooh, cool!'

So we need an actual drawing of a door and a key? And drawing one ourselves does not suffice?

Draw a door on a piece of paper and you will have your "key".

On one hand I'm enjoying the interaction. On the other hand, I don't want things to just be frustrating.

EDIT -- ... but you still need to find the portal.

RPG Superstar 2012

I'm enjoying the interaction too. Hopefully, no one is getting frustrated.

Right. I gotcha, Moff. What PMs? ;)

Male Mostly Human

Well, I went about to "draw the door". But to find the portal, I'm stumped. Right now, we're all assuming we're supposed to be facing a certain direction where the compass directs us. Beyond that, I'm at a loss of this puzzle.

Anyone else is more than welcome to speak up. Bueller?

EDIT: I've taken PM cold medicine, so I'm liable to pass out here within the hour. :P

Woot! Now if only Urizen will feel better. I'm actually surprised that I've been able to keep pretty healthy this season. It seems like my kids were sick every three weeks or so.

Having the cold is the suck, because you essentially just have to wait for it to work itself out of your system. Now I hear that snow may be coming back again, so this means yet another temperature shift. Twice.

Grrr...

Need to get some more otc meds, but I swear they make me feel like I'm a potential criminal when I have to show my ID and sign papers because I want the meds with the psuedoephedrine in it. Going to send the gal to pick it up this time.

Implicating her as an accomplice, eh? I hate that stuff. I took Sudafed one time and stayed up all night with my teeth chattering. Nasty.

I take Sudafed only during the day. I take NyQuil PM during the evenings.

But Benadryl? Whoah. It's Rohypnol for me ... and has made me say some classic blunders because my listening and/or lip-reading goes way south. That and I don't care for the hang-over effects it gives me in the mornings when attempting to awaken.

And yes, an accomplice. I certainly didn't go through the box of 48 alone that I picked up last Friday. :P Some of my options are limited as a post-bariatric patient as we're told to avoid ibuprofen and/or aspirin based content due to being more prone to ulcers.

Sudafed does nothing to me. Benadryl makes me borderline manic-depressive. I took out a ceiling fan on Benadryl one time, then crashed for about 10 hours.

Perhaps E. should take one ... we're going to need what we can take to handle those abishai. :p

If only Elysia could control her rod of wonder by duplicating the previous effect against them, that'd be great! But I don't want to be anywhere near her when that occurs. :)

I'm looking more of a skirmishing approach. I haven't thought exactly yet what I will be saying them, but I fully intend to be messaging them. Anything more said and I suspect I'd be metagaming, so I'll stop right here.

I went ahead and started the combat. (I don't think that Urizen is around right now...) If someone wanted to do something before combat and didn't get a chance to post (like Lynora), assume that you have a round or two to prepare before combat started.

And, taig -- negotiation will sometimes work. Sometimes when you wouldn't normally expect it. Just not this time...

I looked at the PRD before typing this up, but I didn't see a distinction made identifying a spell vs. a spell-like ability being cast. If there is, let me know and I apologize.

Well in this case, since the DC is 15 plus the spell level, it really doesn't matter with a 14 result.

Personally I can see both sides of it. At the very least, I think it should be more difficult than identifying a normal spell. My gut tells me to add 5 to the DC. What do you think?

Let's find out!

FWIW I tend to agree with you that it would seem it should be more difficult as it doesn't necessarily require all the components necessary as would casting a standard spell.

EDIT: We already got our answer. Spellcraft can't be used. Period. Go to the link embedded above as to why.

Agh! Hellacious day. Imaginary numbers followed by lab. Ended up going through the McDonalds drive through on the way home cause I couldn't face cooking after the heart dissection this afternoon. Saw that. I agree and disagree. Mostly just because I personally don't like "impossible" things in the game. I'll think about it, but I may still override the RAW in this case...
