Beyond the rim... there dwells madness -- Moff Rimmer DMs the Planes

Game Master Moff Rimmer

Something is happening that threatens the existence of the planes themselves. Our heroes have been chosen and thrown into things to set things right -- are they up for the challenge?

That was just a test to see if I could easily copy/paste the initiative and how it would work.

Also wanted to make sure that you could see all three things -- the map and the two different creature pics.

You don't necessarily have to use bold. In a lot of PbPs, I just use quotation marks for speech, regular type for action/description, and {/ooc} tags for non-character mechanical bits (and one-liners).

I'm not much for bold either. I usually use quotation marks and regular type for speech and italics for action/description. Bold always makes me feel like I'm shouting. :)

Good! I'll use quotation marks, then. Thanks, all ye experienced PbPers.

A few quick thoughts...

You might want to consider taking guidance as a sorcerer/rogue multiclass. Assuming you have a round before you make a skill check, getting a bonus +1 on EVERY skill check is kind of nice.

Re: Magic items. Probably Bracers of Armor is a must. Protection and save bonuses are nice -- ring of protection and cloak of resistance. A wand with a spell you can't normally cast could help. Scrolls in a similar reasoning as well.

Lastly, I sent you a message, but might as well say it here. (I didn't catch it with anyone else, but just in case...) I don't want anyone to be CN in this campaign. Being a planar adventure, alignment will play a fairly large part in things and I want the party to be fairly against true and absolute CN. (Or else you just might end up joining the bad guy.) Other than that, I prefer good or neutral to help avoid party conflicts, but I won't force that aspect too much.

Just got back from gaming late and about ready to crash. Um, I selected CN initially because if I were to take Arcane Trickster, I had to be a non-lawful alignment, so that precluded me from taking the Infernal bloodline. In order to avoid party conflicts, I didn't select evil either. I kept with Abyssal to take advantage of the +2 modifier to Charisma with regard to spell DCs. I just couldn't see how I'd pull off to be a true Neutral or even Good. I'm open to suggestions.

I haven't spent on skills yet, so we'll see where everything ends up before I make that change. I don't think I've used guidance in any capacity before.

It's the feats and talents I'll need to be debating about. And I've pretty much thought as you did about the magic items I'll be investing in (i.e. protection & wands).

(Without looking things up...) Are you restricted in alignment with regard to bloodlines or are you just trying to keep with the theme? What do you mean "pull off"? Do you mean you (Urizen) can't pull off good or true neutral or that the alignment doesn't fit the character concept?

Guidance is a 0-Level spell that basically gives +1 to your next check/saving throw/attack/etc. Since you get an unlimited number of 0-Level casts and since the Rogue is a skill monster, it seems like a good choice regardless of where you put your skills. (Most people just ignore 0-Level spells -- especially at this level. I just feel that Guidance is at least a little bit useful.)

I'm still not all that familiar with the talents to help with that area. Feats -- I can try to look them up, or if someone else is a little more familiar -- The sorcerer levels bring down your combat abilities a bit. In addition, the prestige class continues to give you your backstab abilities. I thought that there was a feat that allowed you to use your sneak attack at range. I also thought that there was a feat that allowed sneak attack to be allowed with touch or ranged touch spells. (Or I could be imagining it...) Point Blank Shot and Precise Shot could help. You can take a look at the Ambush Feats in Complete Scoundrel. Mage Slayer looked interesting for you (Complete Arcane). Not sure what else.

Re: Alignment...

If there was ever a time to "break the mold" with regard to alignment restrictions, this is it. Re-Reading the Planescape material, I'm finding that there are NG Succubus and so on. So don't feel that if you have an "evil" or "chaotic" heritage, that you must follow suit.

Hope that helps.

The PrC precludes you from a lawful alignment, otherwise I would have gone with LN.

These alignment restrictions prevent me from playing that barbarian/monk PC that beckons me. :P

Oh, I can definitely play a good or true neutral PC. Coincidentally, the Andoran Ranger I played in last night's F2F campaign is NG.

Spoiler:
Although he is quite the goblinoid racist and we have a goblin alchemist in our party. I went hunting for some food and managed to finagle an elk for the party. I made the comment that if I offered "it" a side of flank by tossing it to his side, would that consider him flanked and allow me an additional +2 to strike him? I can hit him at +8 and do 2d6+10 with my greatsword, so another +2 is gravy. Hehe.

Looks like you've got a lot of choices still to make. I don't have a whole lot of recommendation for feats, you can never go wrong with toughness though. For equipment I would suggest picking up a headband of charisma and a belt of dexterity as your first items before you pick up any other equipment. I'd follow that up with spells that can be used with sneak attack, acid splash is going to be your best friend. No SR or saving throw + sneak attack = lots of d6s! Sure, it's not exactly the most powerful combo in the world...

Defenses could be an issue. Not a lot of HP or a chance for a high AC. Bracers of Armor are nice, but it might be better to purchase a wand of Mage Armor in the short term until you've got the money for better bracers (+3 at least). Otherwise you could spend a feat on arcane armor training to lessen you spell failure chance. That'd allow you to get away with leather armor or possibly a mithril chainshirt.

Question about Arcane Strike as a Feat ... am I understanding that I could essentially just make a weapon magical to bypass DR each round and all it requires for me is to be an arcane caster?

I've been looking into Spell Penetration and Create Wands.

Moff: where is this guidance spell located? I didn't see it in Pathfinder Core or APG. I assume it's in one of the WotC 3.x books?

Spell penetration is a good choice. I'd go for it over Arcane Strike if you're thinking about melee. For ranged weapons it is a great choice... until you gain multiple attacks. At that point it prevents you from being able to make a full attack since you no longer have a full round for full attacks. It's good until you hit BAB +6, though. Power Attack or Deadly Aim work out better in the long run. Create Wands is never a bad idea for a caster.

Oops -- my bad on guidance. I'm playing a summoner and it's on their spell list, so I thought it was arcane. Oh well.

Re: Arcane Strike -- SP - why do you think you don't get full attacks? Is there a rule that says that a swift action negates full attack action? (Actually I was going to ask about that since I couldn't find anything terribly specific regarding swift actions.)

Ah, okay. I see that you can take a full attack and use a swift at once (this is different than other d20 game systems swift actions). I had been under the assumption that using anything other than a free action prevented you from using a full attack, but it looks like everyone gets one free swift action per turn regardless of any other actions taken. Its difficult to go back and forth on the rules for so many different systems and keep them all straight. :\

Hmmm, I think that begs that some things be reorganized as swift actions then... not now of course.
