RE: Alignment:
yeah, i prefer to just act as i think the character would react. the things that have a mechanical effect based on alignment are rarely used, in my experience, except certain good vs evil dynamics. i'd rather act what i feel and have a DM tell me the [Lawful] spell does full damage to me than write down that I am chaotic and feel like i have to act that way.

On disenchanting, the rules state that you get residuum worth 20% of the value of the item you have disenchanted. There are some supplementary rules around whether an item is Common, Uncommon or Rare and how much residuum you get. Residuum is used as a ritual component but also is used to create magic items (if you know the ritual and are the right level).
However, since I am pretty bad at handing our treasure, and DS likewise tends not to be especially generous in that regard as a setting, you might choose to disenchant an item and turn it into something else (assuming you get to learn how to enchant items and have residuum of the requisite value). So the residuum take on disenchanting an item will be 80% in this game. For the orb itself, this will be several thousands of gp.

Cool, thanks.
I started a new job Monday, and access from within work is a little harder than it's been before, so my posting pattern is likely to change a bit. Should easily be able to post once per day though. Well, unless I get 404's all evening like last night ;)

I may have to go slightly incommunicado for a few days. My PGCE is coming to an end and I have to finish up a couple of essays, write a reflective diary, do one more observation and attend an induction at the local nick where I'm going to be teaching offenders the errors of their grammatical ways. It should not make too much difference, but just to warn you in case I vanish.
Safier
Safier, you haven't been posting much lately. I appreciate you've had technology problems but could you confirm you are still around?
Sorry about the posting, or lack thereof. It seems time is getting away from me (case in point, I didn't see your post from Tuesday until today, and I thought I updated all my games yesterday). The computer problem is resolved now, I've just been playing catch up since then. Plus I've had a couple other things eating up my time, including a trip for work.
On that note, next week (specifically the 12th to the 16th) I won't be able to post at all. I'll be out of town for work and experience from last year taught me I won't have any free time during this trip. I apologize for my absence.

Just a comment, but you don't get magick shoppes in this setting, what with the attitudes to to arcane magic and so on and the lack of divine magic too (and the sorcerer-kings keep a tight grip on this stuff for obvious reasons). You might be able to find a psionicist for hire, but this is basically a fly-blown border town. IOf you want magic, you might need to make the items yourself. Which means someone needs to learn the ritual to enchant magic items, since no one in the party can do that right now.

@Aub:
I know there are no magic shops, but what about the "potion-like" healing fruits we had earlier? Is there some shop that we might find those type of items?
Th'Kal gets hit often and I could see buying a few of those.
-If we do find someone to do some enchanting, Big-T definitely could use a bump in his armor/defenses. A low level +1 amulet or bonus to armor would be nice.
For the group:
It's not a bad idea to keep some of the residuum for rituals - the one Jareen used to share our healing surges that allowed us to go on for a few extra fights was nice.

I'm working on getting caught back up now from my work trip.
I don't have my book in front of me, but as far as rituals go in 4e if I recall, isn't it a feat to be able to cast rituals? I honestly don't recall and will look it up when I get home later tonight.
Arakan
Yes, Ritual Casting is a Feat (which some classes get for free). So, if you don't have it, I don't know if you have and can't use the new ritual, or don't have the ritual at all.
Arakan
Aubrey, I took the Alchemist Feat (alchemy ritual casting/craft alchemical magic items). How would you like me to determine if I can find recipes, and which ones?
Arakan
Talk to the crazy elf.
Was this in response to my question? If so, I'm not tracking what crazy elf you are referring to.

working on level up, so far as best i can tell:
can add +1 to two ability scores (probably STR and INT)
modify things based on 1/2 level (not sure what all of those are)
+5 HP
no class features?
definitely no powers at level 4, i can tell that much.
one new feat
----------------
as far as feats go, i looked through the Dark Sun book and the main Player Handbook, not really seeing good feats. am i missing something?
