A Campaign Fit For a Queen

The kings and queens of Korvosa have long ruled under the shadow of the Curse of the Crimson Throne—an infamous superstition claiming that no monarch of the city of Korvosa shall ever die of old age or produce an heir. Whether or not there is any truth to the legend of the curse, Korvosa's current king is but the latest victim to succumb to this foul legacy. Now, the metropolis teeters on the edge of anarchy, and it falls to a band of new heroes to save Korvosa from the greatest threat it has ever known! This hardcover compilation updates the fan-favorite campaign for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game, including new and revised content and nearly 500 pages packed with mayhem, excitement, and adventure!

This hardcover edition of Curse of the Crimson Throne contains:

  • All six chapters of the original Adventure Path, expanded and updated for use with the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game.
  • An in-depth gazetteer of the city of Korvosa as it exists under the rule of its new queen.
  • An array of new rules options for characters, ranging from campaign traits to spells to magic items.
  • An expansive appendix with statistics, descriptions, backgrounds, and rules support for the 12 most important NPCs in the campaign.
  • A bestiary featuring nine monsters from the original Adventure Path making their debut under the Pathfinder Roleplaying Game rules.
  • Dozens of new illustrations, never-before-seen characters, location maps, extensive new encounter locations, and more!

The Gold Standard For Adventure Paths

5/5

This AP is widely considered one of the (if not THE) best Adventure Paths for good reason. It really is that good. Tons of really interesting NPCs and storylines. Lots and lots and lots of room for a GM to add their own touches. An excellent story that makes the PCs feel like heroes. Villains they really want to beat. Heck, it's even a good introduction to the pathfinder system and world.

Not only that, but since it's so popular, there's tons of advice about what changes to make, what to keep an eye on, and how to make changes that can improve it. This edition is a fantastic deal and an excellent campaign and I can't recommend it highly enough.

Frick it my review got deleted

5/5

I wrote fricking long review about great time I had with running the whole campaign(and post campaign) and then it got deleted by the fricking "too much backtracking" page dagnabbit

I'm not gonna write the entire thing again, so here is in short: This campaign has great recurring NPC cast(most of later APs have problem with introducing cool NPCs and then rest of books never mentioning them again), great themes, great villains, Kazavon's awesome hair, allows multiple approaches to different situations(such as infiltrating with sneaking or talking through places instead of just fighting through them. Kinda reminds me of Deux Ex computer games in a way), awesome locations, awesome post campaign potential and is one of my favourite APs ever.

Good value, but some reservations

4/5

Short Version: A smart buy but held back by structural issues.

It's hard to get better adventure value for your dollar than this or the Rise of the Runelords collected edition. If I were reviewing on that alone, this would be 5 stars and then some. But there's more to an adventure than that.

The AP's hook is quite good, but almost immediately discarded in favor of saving the city. This can be helped a good session 0, but still feels artificial.

Even looking at the new plot, many elements feel shoehorned in. People point to volumes 4 and 5 for this, but there are sections in 2 that exist only to kill time as the plot advances and an entire dungeon in 3 that is cool but can seem forced if the players don't kick in the door right away. Any of these alone would be fine, but each makes the next more obvious.

That being said, there's a lot of cool stuff going on here, it just takes at least a star's worth of work to stitch it together.

3.5 vs. Pathfinder comparison!

5/5

I´m gonna list the differences between the original AP#7s chapters and it´s adaption into the hardcover edition:

Inside front cover:
The "Korvosan Hierarchy" overview is not reprinted.
Part 1:
The illustration on page 6 is exchanged for a cartoony new one on page 12 of the HC.
Page 10 of AP#7 has a map where the 8 locations in Korvosa that are important for book 1 are marked and named. This map is reprinted on page 400 of the HC but that one shows ALL important locations of the campaign at once, marked with letters and numbers.
"Lamm´s Lambs" stats are upgraded to young human on page 18 of the HC.
"Yargin Balko" now has a full body illustration instead of an upper body one. "Hookshanks Gruller" gets a full body illustration. "Giggles" gets a fbi. "Gaedren Lamm" gets a fbi.
Part 2:
King Eodred Arabasti gets a head illu. "Imps and Dragons" gets an illustration. "Meet the mob" gets a "Amin Jalento" head illu and his battle stats.
Part 3:
The illustration of "Sabina Merrin" on page 25 is not reprinted (she gets a new one on page 455).
Part 4:
"Cressida Croft" gets a head illu (and fbi on page 443). The Queens gets a new veiled head illu (the old one is more mysterious). The "renegade guards" stats in "All the Worlds Meat" get new stats. "Verik Vancasterkin" is upgraded from fighter 3 to fighter 4.
Part 5:
The "Ambassadors Secret" gets a new head illu. The fbi of "Vencarlo Orisini" from page 34 is not reprinted. The fbi of "Devargo Barvasi" on page 37 is replaced with a new one that is very much less impressive. He is upgraded from rogue 4 to rogue 5. "Majenko" is changed from pseudodragon to house drake. The illustration on page 41 is replaced with a new one (page 57). Both are equally creepy.
Part 6:
The "Trinia Sabor" fbi from page 43 is not reprinted (she gets a new look on page 460, but the old one is flashier). She is upgraded from bard 4 to bard 5. "The Shingle Chase" gets a better illustration. Curiously it features the old flashier Trinia Sabor outfit instead of the new.
Part 7:
The Owlbear skeleton gets gorgeous art on page 59 of the HC. The cool illustration on page 52 is replaced by a cool new one on HC page 61.
Cabbagehead´s head illu is replaced by a fbi. The "Gaekhen" head illu is not reprinted. "Vreeg" gets a much better new fbi.
Concluding the adventure:
The famous "green dress Illeosa Arabasti" illustration from page 56 (on which the first miniature is based) is NOT reprinted!
The Blackjack illustration from page 57 is replaced by a much better one on HC page 67.
Appendixes:
The 4 page Harrow article is updated to a 14 page one!
The 8 page "people of the road" article about varisians is not reprinted.
The 6 page Pathfinder´s journal is not reprinted.
Bestiary:
The illustration of the "Dream Spider", the only creature that hasn´t been adapted to a Bestiary yet, is not reprinted from page 82 but it´s stats are.
Inside back cover:
The "Korvosas enemies" overview is not reprinted.

While the new edition HC is better overall and everything needed for playing the campaign is included, updated and streamlined, quite a few cool things are left out.
I´m glad i got the original AP #7 too.

Even better than the original

5/5

Read my full review at Of Dice and Pen.

It was perhaps inevitable that Curse of the Crimson Throne would one day also receive a similar treatment to Rise of the Runelords. There’s no special anniversary to celebrate this year, but does there really need to be? Much like its Runelords predecessor, the new hardcover compilation of Crimson Throne updates the adventure path to Pathfinder rules and also expands on the story where beneficial and streamlines in other areas. It also takes advantage of the most recent rules supplements, making use of newer monsters, classes, and feats where appropriate.

At nearly 500 pages in length, it is actually a substantially larger tome than the hardcover Runelords (a good 50 pages or so longer), and its extra length is certainly put to good use. Indeed, it manages to make one of the best adventure paths even better.

Any changes to History of Ashes? While a solid adventure on its own, it did feel a bit disjointed from the rest of the AP.

Liberty's Edge

I kind of remember Tito Leati posting some cutting-room-floor outtakes from his adventure on these boards. Have those been integrated in the hardcover?

Scarab Sages

So, is the Guided weapon enchantment going to get updated for Pathfinder Rules?

Yes.

Spoiler:
The basic encounters themselves in History of Ashes are more or less the same but they're organized and presented in a sandbox way rather than a linear way, so that your party can go through it in any order they wish and the way they build up enough respect is left largely to them. In addition, the expectation is that the PCs can come and go to and from Korvosa for all of chapter 4 and 5, likely via teleport or shadow walk or the like based on party resources. There's a 20 page adventure that takes place in Korvosa, in fact, that I wrote to add as a last chapter to History of Ashes, so that the intention is that you do all the Shoanti stuff and then return to Korvosa to do an important mission before moving on to Scarwall. Finally, I've removed pretty much ALL of the "DO THIS FAST OR THE SHOANTI DECLARE WAR ON KORVOSA!!!!" part of the adventure path. The Shoanti aren't preparing for war in this version, but they remain unfriendly to the PCs. This removes an unnecessary perception of a time limit on the PCs, and also addresses the sort of nonsensical idea that the shoanti would attack Korvosa in the first place without first having to deal with Kaer Maga, the Storval Rise, and many many many miles of intervening hinterlands and towns before they even REACHED Korvosa. A "Shoanti declare war on Korvosa" is its own adventure path idea, not a side trek.

Nope. Chapter 6 is in fact the chapter that saw the least amount of revisions. They're in there, but there's not a lot of "restored" content in this one, mostly because I'm not so sure it fits well with the direction we ended up taking with the campaign, but also because the previous chapter is SO MUCH a castle crawl that expanding Castle Korvosa more is overkill.

That said, I DID add back in a lot of content to Scarwall that was cut for space, and an even greater amount of brand new content, to make Scarwally fully detailed without empty rooms. This keeps the whole dungeon crawl experience more or less confined to that one chapter, and goes ALL OUT on it. So it made less sense to do the same in the very next chapter.

In addition, there's a section in Scarwall's chapter that provides lots of advice to GMs who want to adjust the length of Scarwall in case their table is tired of dungeon crawls and/or just wants to get back to Korvosa.

Imbicatus wrote:
So, is the Guided weapon enchantment going to get updated for Pathfinder Rules?

Nope.

1) The guided weapon ability doesn't really mesh well with today's Pathfinder rules design philosophy.

2) This is the MAIN reason though, and spoilering it for plot point reasons.

Spoiler:
In the previous game, the NPC who wielded a guided weapon was Shadowcount Sial, who was a cleric/thaumaturge with a kyton minion. In Pathfinder, we don't have a thaumaturge class... but we DO have a class that's all about having an outsider minion in much the same way that Sial worked. So... Shadowcount Sial is now an unchained summoner, rather than a cleric. This works well on multiple levels, including the fact that he and Laori no longer overlap in abilities and compliment each other much better.

But it also means that Sial's ability scores shifted. His best stat is now Charisma, and his Wisdom is merely a 13. So... a weapon that lets him add his Wis mod to it is kinda pointless to him, so even if I did decide to keep the guided weapon in the adventure, he wouldn't benefit from it or have one. And rather than horn it in on someone else, and because the magic item appendix of the book is already bursting at the seams, I cut it entirely.

Keen eyed readers may note that there isn't a kyton option for an eidolon for the Unchained summoner. That changes with this book.

The nosferatu Arkminos turned into an Alchemist during Carion Crown, so his stats are updated to reflect that in this adventure.

Thank you, very interested in the new eidolon.

I will say that it wouldn't be too bad if it only worked to add Wis to Damage, and you still needed Guided Hand or certain monk archetypes to gain Wis to Hit.

Just out of curiosity, are there any assumptions as to which AP came first for good old Ramoska, between CotCT and Carrion Crown? When I ran Carrion Crown, I made a couple of tweaks to him because one of the PCs had a backstory that would benefit from them being linked. Would it screw anything up with him if I ran this and keeps such tweaks for consistency?

Spoiler:
No assumptions. His stats in the Hardcover CotCT are more or less the exact same stats as they appeared in Carrion Crown, and so the order in which those two campaigns occur in your game is up to you. He's equally powerful in each. Since he's FAR MORE LIKELY to escape and not get killed in Curse, having Curse happen before Carrion Crown makes more sense, all other factors being equal.

But assuming he survived Carrion Crown, there's no reason why those events can't predate the ones in your Curse game.

Things I have said before that are still true:

From 2009:

The number one problem with collected APs is that our cash flow relies on constant sales of the current AP volume, and anything that we do that potentially reduces sales of the current volume is harmful to us. Not only would collecting them train some people to wait for the compilations, but it would also be creating a product that competes with the current AP for the attention of new customers. Either one of those is bad enough; taken together, the whole issue becomes a non-starter.

From 2010:

I mentioned it in the Why We Don't Reprint Thread, but I may as well repeat it here:

"The 'no reprints' rule doesn't apply to everything... and 'reinvention' is also possible. So long as it's done in a way that is as appealing as a completely new product, and doesn't train people to always wait for the reinvention."

So an anniversary edition that updates the out-of-print Rise of the Runelords to PFRPG rules is interesting. The ruleset update satisfies the requirements of reinvention to at least some degree; then, so long as we made it clear that this was a one-time exception, and that waiting for, say, a complete Kingmaker compilation would probably be fruitless, that could satisfy the "not training people to wait" rule.

From 2011, after the announcement of the Runelords compilation:

We have *no* plans to compile additional adventure paths. Keeping up sales (and especially subscriptions) of the Pathfinder Adventure Path line is crucial to our business, and if we were to make a habit of regularly compiling APs, many customers would be tempted to opt out of the ongoing series, choosing instead to wait for the compilations.

That would be, frankly, one of the worst possible things that could happen to Paizo.

I won't say we'll never ever compile another Adventure Path, but I will say it would take very very unusual circumstances for us to consider doing another one, no matter how well this one sells.

From 2013:

Allow me to give you another data point. While we rarely talk about print run sizes or sales numbers, we do, every now and then, do blog posts where we tell you which items are getting low on stock—defined as under 1000 copies—in our warehouse. [I then linked to a recent such blog post, which I won't relink since it's terribly out of date.]

From that, you might deduce the following stock levels for each volume of the AP:

Rise of the Runelords:
Sold out: 1, 3, 5, 6
Between 25 and 100 copies: 4
Between 100 and 250 copies: 2
(Total remaining copies: 125-350)

Crimson Throne:
Between 25 and 100 copies: 2
Between 500 and 1000 copies: 1, 3
More than 1000 copies: 4, 5, 6
(Total remaining copies: 4025-?)

Second Darkness:
More than 1000 copies: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6
(Total remaining copies: 6000-?)

Legacy of Fire:
Between 500 and 1000 copies: 4
More than 1000 copies: 1, 2, 3, 5, 6
(Total remaining copies: 5500-?)

It doesn't take a business degree to see Rise of the Runelords is in a class by itself. It made a standout candidate for a compilation; any other AP would require a lot more justification.

Note: "More copies in the warehouse" does not directly correlate to "fewer copies sold", as print runs vary from volume to volume. But it's safe to assume that a compilation of any of these would drastically reduce the rate of sales of the current printings, so these numbers are certainly one of many factors we'd take into consideration if we were looking to compile one of them—which we are currently not.

From 2014:

I would like to be clear that we do try to avoid saying *never*. When we did the Rise of the Runelords anniversary edition, we said that it was a special circumstance—an exception to the rule—but we haven't said that there will definitely never ever be another exception. But it took 5 years to do the first one, and it's been a few years since that came out, and we're not working on one now.

And some additional comments just for today:

Reprinting APs will continue to be extremely rare. Not never, but rare enough that you shouldn't plan on any given AP ever being compiled. It has been 4 years since the last compilation, and there's no reason to expect the next to come any sooner.

Just as Runelords was when we compiled it, Crimson Throne is now almost sold out in its original form (as of our last low inventory blog in November, the first three volumes were completely sold out, volumes 4 and 5 were under 1000 copies, and volume 6 was under 500), and it benefits from being updated to the current ruleset. While a couple other APs meet one or the other of those, there are no other APs that meet both. Nobody is working on another compilation beyond Curse, and nobody will be working on one anytime soon.

I just ordered Second Darkness #1 (AP13) for €32 & SD#2 (AP14) for €20 from amazon.
I would have ordered them from Paizo directly BUT with unknown shipping and tax costs it is too bothersome.

I wish Paizo had a european warehouse and have been saying so for years but sadly it ain't so.

Let's hope the taxes fall away one day (TTIP), then i would propably do it.

Now CotCT #2 "7 days to the grave" is the only AP of 103 issues that i don't own as a print copy and come september i'll at least have the hardcover conversion.

I wish i could get my hands on a "Guide to Korvosa" print edition but €45 is too much.

Also, my flagstore is not being able to order ANY Second Darkness issues anymore, i tried.
They may be available from Paizo directly but can't be ordered by distributors.

Something that i don't understand if more than 1000 of each remain in stock at Paizo's warehouse.

Dark Archive

None of the 6 Second Darkness issues are sold out. On acount of the last info 1000+ remain of each (a shame, as parts 3-5 are great, the intro and end could use some work).

Legacy of Fire #4 is SOLD OUT.
#5 & #6 are under 250 copies each.
#1 & #2 are under 1000 copies each.

If #5 (THE CITY OF BRASS) and #6 (great article on Rovagugs spawn if i remember correctly) sell out, we COULD get a hardcover in a few years.

So do yourself a favour and buy them, as the articles, Pathfinder Tales and a lot of the art WON'T BE REPRINTED in a hardcover!

Thanks again for the transparency, Vic. (And full marks for consistency - I doubt I'd agree with very much that I was saying in 2009).

I've run this twice and have no expectation of ever running it again. It's my favorite AP though, so I'll have to grab a copy "just cos".

Really looking forward to the Scarwall enhancements - my players loved the creepy feel but the empty-room phenomenon did detract slightly from the mood from time to time. Haunts, clues and other such encounters would have been an excellent addition.

Nothing about the watermarks themselves bother me. However, for large PDFs, I like being able to add bookmarks, incorporate the simpler of my house rules, and make other minor edits to the PDF. Paizo's DRM prevents many forms of editing, including . IIRC, Vic or someone else from Paizo said that they couldn't allow removal or addition of bookmarks without also making it possible to alter, add, or remove other text, watermarks, and they aren't willing to give up control over our PDFs like that. And of course I can't alter the text to include my house rules in the book itself for convenience without also being able to edit the watermarks.

I'm not principally opposed to all DRM, but I am opposed to DRM which prevents or hinders me from using a product in a way that I wanted to use it. It's not a complete dealbreaker, and it is far from the most annoying form of DRM I have encountered ("copy/paste disabled" is a whole lot worse), and I would still consider purchasing a Paizo product even if it has editing restricted. Even so, if Paizo doesn't have the technology to "watermark" products without DRM-restricting legitimate use, then it's a pretty big drawback to using their products. It's sort of the same problem that all DRM has: the more restrictions you apply in an effort to thwart piracy, the more legitimate users you block out as a side-effect.
Unless Paizo has changed there system since the last time I checked, and it is now possible to have more control over PDFs from Paizo. If Paizo has reduced their DRM to the point where it would no longer bother me, then you can and should ignore everything else I've just said:)

It doesn't bother me nearly as much for smaller, focused PDFs, but I'm guessing the CotCT hardcover PDF won't qualify as "small."

Depending on what you're using to view the PDFs (tablets, and whatnot), there are viewers that will let you add notes and annotations on the reader-side of things without necessarily altering the file. (And I'm pretty sure there are some that will let you add such annotations to the file itself without running into the security software, because it's just attaching things to the PDF rather than directly changing the text.)

HUZZAH! I know I'm one of the few, but RotRL didn't do much for me, hard cover or no. THIS is the one I've always been interested in. I've got all the bits, but haven't managed to play in or run it yet. Very much looking forward to the updated compilation.

Might give this a pickup. Fun stuff.

WIth regard to the Guide to Korvosa, there's little reason to revise or reprint that one since it was largely a system-neutral document to begin with--which I quite like, since I've been planning to run CotCT in D&D 5E for a few months now and am just waiting to finish some other games before I undertake another AP run.

Speaking of gripes with PDFs, btw, while I totally understand the need for watermarking and protecting files, GtK was some what irksome in this regard because it was entirely player-friendly as far as spoilers go... except for one chapter they shouldn't read. I would love to be able to have a copy of the guide that omits that chapter so I can distribute it freely to prospective players, but as it stands now it's not available and I can't legitimately print a PDF copy of the non-spoilery content. Not that I don't trust my players--I just prefer to remove temptation whenever possible. =]

Without wanting to threadjack (Great news on the hardcover CoCT - can't wait!!), I'm also a European (UK) customer and I understand the issue.

Frankly, though, as a subscriber I find it easy enough to order additional products and sidecart them so they ship at minimal cost with everything else. I ordered the Emerald Spire Flip Map pack this month as a birthday treat and it will arrive with my sub order at a reasonable shipping cost.

Amazon is useful but generally I only catch up on Pathfinder RPG books there where the PDFs are less useful (as the PRD covers the rules).

I can't even describe how excited I am.... I got the RotRL hardcover when I was halfway through that campaign (and I'm still not finished o.O), and it was an amazing upgrade. I really want to run CotCT next, so I'm really happy this will be out before then.

Are there plans for Hero Lab and Realm Works integration? I would love to actually have all those tools right from the beginning of a campaign.

Wait. "Updated illustrations of classic Curse of the Crimson Throne characters." Like Laori Vaus? Could this mean a mini is actually possible, now that some good art might happen?

I really enjoyed the Pathfinder Tale in the Legacy of Fire AP. The half-elf "water druid" was awesome!

This is amazing. I ran this a few years ago and had a blast. Will there be a Pathfinder Pawns set in the near future to go with it?

That'd be awesome. :)

I hope they manage for Laori to keep her chainmail swimsuit. :p

I hope Shattered Star, Second Darkness and one to two more of the older paths (I hope either Carrion Crown, Serpents Skull or Skulls and Shackles) go this way in a year or two. I love that you guys update them and add some new material. Great call!

Don´t hold your breath for other updates. James said as much in another thread. IF this happens at all, my guess would be that it would be the remaining two 3.5 APs, nothing newer.

EDIT: ninja´d by Gorbacz (where in Poland are you anyway?)

To be honest, I'd almost want to see what they would do to Second Darkness to make it less terrible in the second part. ^^

Any changes to History of Ashes? While a solid adventure on its own, it did feel a bit disjointed from the rest of the AP.

Yes.

OMG, YES! Basically I'm like this at the moment about this. Not so much about the Fencing Grace stuff in Ultimate Intrigue, but hey, mixed blessings.

Say, it's probably too late to suggest that you replace Scarwall with Citadel Vraid? That's what I did in my first run-though of CotCT, with Scarwall basically warping in due to activation of Kazavon's artifacts and replacing Citadel Vraid, because I thought moving the campaign too far from Korvosa was a mistake. It's not as if the Hell Knights are still a factor in the campaign at this point.

Ah, it's probably a bad idea, because it would allow the PC's to return to Korvosa when there should be a time-skip until their return.

A second suggestion: The last adventure should have a more active rebellion plot before it's off to storm the castle.

Oh well, I guess I can stop doing my conversions now. It'll be interesting to see how they stack up against JJ's.

She will not.

All I care about is scaring the crap out of my players with Chained Spirit and Danse Macabre.
