About Marik Whiterose

Appearance and Personality:

Marik is a young man with long blonde hair, usually pulled back into a pony tail. His eyes are a dark green, reminiscent of a verdant jungle canopy. His pale skin tone is due to all the time spent at the college library studying up on his lifelong obsession.
Although studious, Marik is gifted with an overabundance of youthful exuberance, often unable to sit for long periods of time unless discussing one of his favorite subjects, Marik is just as excitable as his pet dinosaur.

Background:

“The dream is always the same.
I'm flying over a verdant carpet of trees as far as the eye can see. Below me, scattered among the trees, are ruins far older than imagining. As I travel I come to a simple village located in a clearing in the jungle. After landing in the village I am ignored by the dark skinned natives. All, except one. A wizened old man with the universe in his eyes looks at me, no, through me. He leads me to the edge of the village where two paths lead off into the jungle. He says to me "One path leads to Power and Right, the other to Might and Darkness. It is up to you to decide which is the right path for you." As I look into those ageless eyes I never get the chance to decide as I always awake.”

Ever since he was a young boy Marik Whiterose has been haunted by a recurring dream. It is this dream which has shaped his life. It was this dream which caused Marik to attend the Stone of the Seers, Magnimar’s esteemed arcane school, in an attempt to discover it's meaning. One day, while studying in the school’s libraries Marik came across a picture of the old man from his dreams it was the Old-Mage Jatembe, a great wizard and folk hero to the people of the Mwangi Expanse. This discovery led Marik to become obsessed with the people and the history of the Expanse.

One day while wandering through the stalls of Dockway’s Bazaar of Sails, Marik spied a Rhamphorhynchus, a creature native to the Mwangi Expanse. Fascinated Marik approached the creature’s cage to see it close up. Unfortunately, he got too close as the pterosaur lunged at his outstretched hand taking a bite out of his finger. Laughing despite the blood Marik purchased the animal from the vendor and hurried back to school to begin the ritual of bonding with it. After many false starts, and bite wounds, Marik finally managed to make the connection between the two of them. Nursing his latest bite Marik decided to name the creature Nipper, due to its tendency to bite the hand that feeds it.

Years passed and upon graduation Marik packed up his meager belongings and with Nipper in tow headed for the docks to book passage on the first ship sailing for the Mwangi Expanse to follow his dream. Passing ship after ship on the docks he finally found one sailing to the Expanse, a ship named the Jenivere. Paying his money to the Captain, Marik walked up the boarding plank and went below to stow his gear without a look back.
