Liberty's Edge

Hello Everyone, Due to the popularity of GM Lugos' recruitment thread, I've decided to run Jade Regent as well.

(I have "borrowed" some of his requirements for characters but there are changes)

Character generation guidelines:(Please Read carefully):

Recruitment ends Friday, February 28, but if I pick my players before then I will post an end to submissions.

º Nothing 3rd Party, Paizo only.

º 20 point build, with no stat high than 19 or lower than 8 after racials.

º Average starting gold + 20 GP

º HP will be Max at 1st, Then rolled, I allow one reroll per level but you have to take the 2nd roll.

º Races are Core + anything from the Featured races. I reserve the right to make you write backstory explaining odd Races/Class combos.

º Alignments are any good or neutral (no evil)

º Classes, Nothing from the playtest.

º 2 traits, one of which must be a campaign trait. I will allow 1 drawback for an additional trait (no more than that. May take no trait that increases wealth.

º Archtypes allowed, but must be approved beforehand.

º Read the Jade Regent Players Guide located here
Paizo

º I want a short background describing your character, why they are how they are and why they are in Sandpoint.

Also take a quick look at these guides they have a bunch of good info regarding PbP(Play By Post):

Doomed Hero's Guide to PbP:

Important info

Please answer the following questions:

Questions:

1. Have you played PbP(Play by post) before?
2. What is your Time Zone"
3. How often do you think you will be able to post per day?
4. I'm thinking of a fish, which one?

Some Background about me. I have been playing Pen and Paper games for over 15 years, mostly DnD but since Pathfinder was released I have focused on it. I've Part-timed in a comic shop for the past 10 years so I have had a chance to Run and play with players of all different skill levels. I am willing to help anyone who has any questions.

I would like to submit Master of Things Chemical, Gnick Gnack Paddy Wack!

Submitting my same character from before, Amber Irdait:

(1) Staff Magus - if the archetype is approved
(2) Added 3rd trait, added drawback

Everything else is the same and should meet your requirements.

Answers:

(1) Yes. I've only been playing a few weeks, but I'm currently playing in two homebrew PbPs as well as a Serpent's Skull PbP.
(2) Central Standard
(3) I can post at least once per day, more on my days off. If I'm working, I may be limited to either one larger post when I get home (usually 9:30/10pm CST) or smaller posts throughout the day via my phone. If combat is happening when I'm at work, I'll try really hard to at least post my actions in order to keep the game moving.
(4) The Salmon of Doubt

Staff Magus is fine

Submiting Sybil Vekker as in Lugos' thread. She is tied to Koya via friend of the family.

I will be making a few changes tomorow (tying her more to sandpoint) but really minor things.

Also, I am curious to know how if you were planning on keeping the RP interactions with the 4 mains npcs high. To me it seems that it is what makes this AP different from the others.

Answers:

1. Playing in two other games right now, I was getting bored of the long wait time so I decided to try another one (mostly because, as I wrote earlier, this AP seems RP intensive which does not always go well with my IRL group).
2. Eastern north america
3. At least once (usually more, up to 3 or 4 if I am having a relax weekend)
4. Jellyfish (not because they are fish, because they are gooey).

So, how do you feel about the alchemist (crypt breaker) and about the family ties drawback? I was thinking of considering Koya as 'family' and extending it to the other main NPCs and PCs.

Family ties:
Effect(s) When a family member makes a request of you, you must fulfill that request or take a –2 penalty on all Wisdom- and Charisma-based ability checks and skill checks until you either do what was requested or succeed at a DC 20 Will saving throw, which you can attempt once per day at the start of each day. You can’t take this drawback if you have no family. If you ever lose your family or lose contact with your family, exchange this drawback for the Doubt drawback.

Sovereign Court

Dotting.
Will put up my tengu Galford Dao later wheb I get back from work.
Galford is a rogue with the swordmaster/scout archetype and tied to Koya via foster child.

I have an idea for an elven druid, taking the younger sibling trait for Shalelu.

Is the Treesinger druid archetype for elves okay?

crypt breaker is fine, Family ties is fine.

As for RP I may try and have two types of interactions to avoid getting bogged down. Meaning there would be active interaction and modular interactions.

Active takes place in the now.

Modular will be kept in spoiler tags and added to concurrently. What I mean by this is:

Say you are at the Rusty Dragon talking to Amieko, instead of waiting for everyone to finish all their interactions before we continue. We can keep those conversations going as an aside.

What do you think?

Are you allowing the ACG Playtest classes? I'm thinking a fighter type...

I find it quite alien but I would need to see it used to voice an opinion(do you have any examples?)

I think he meant the use of spoilers.

In a normal face to face game it's easy for the GM to have a conversation between a player and a NPC.

With PbP, These conversations can take quite a while as we have to post.
So in order to allow the players to RP with the NPC's, we can do something like this.

Example of what I would like to do:

The party and NPC's are deciding a course of action. We post back and forth until they decide what needs to be done. At that point they do it (Active Interaction)

During the interaction one of the NPC's mentions something not related to the current situation but the players want to expand on.
For instance "This reminds me of the time I was in Restov and was arrested by the authorities" now we could stop everything to expand on that or we can stick it in a spoiler tag and expand on it as we go. (passive interaction)

does that make sense?

So kind of like:

PCs/NPcs as a group discuss something, agree on a course of action, then do it.

*While this active interaction is happening*

PC A: Yo NPC B, I was curious about <that thing you mentioned>. Tell me more?
NPC B: Sure thing!

<spoilertags-PC A & NPC B have their conversation-spoilertags>

Correct?

Aww. Glad to see someone using some of my requirements.

Best of luck to everyone, and good luck to Meninite!

Silver Crusade

I would like to present Ikoma Gohei. He was selected for a Jade Regent path, that was terminated after 2 days by the GM.
Ikoma Gohei is a human samurai.
I have to check for the 20 points but apart from that he is good to go!

How about Theologian Cleric? Is that ok?

If so I'd like to submit Iza M'Halen, Oni-spawn Tiefling Cleric of Yamatsumi and close friend of Koya Mvashti. If Theologian isn't ok I'll rework her to standard Cleric.
It's the same char I submitted for the other tread.

As for your question:

Spoiler:

1: Yes, been playing pbp for the last 8-10 years now
2: GMT+1, but I tend to be a bit of a night owl
3: Daily should be doable, more times a day if the game and my schedule allows it. I do have an aversion against posting for the sake of posting if there is nothing to add.
4: Herring, a sturdy one to chop down the biggest tree in the forest

Tharjuk Shundar-Quah re-applying for Jade Regent (from the other thread): Human Oracle (Life) with Shaonti background.

Questions:

1. Have you played PbP(Play by post) before?
I have played in two games before (not on Paizo), and am currently the GM of my own game here (Red Hand of Doom).
2. What is your Time Zone?
GMT+1 (Central Europe, Berlin)
3. How often do you think you will be able to post per day?
At least once, but most days multiple postings should be possible.
4. I'm thinking of a fish, which one?
The funny one.

I'd like to submit a Barbarian for this game. Trying to figure out how I can make him more than just a brute with a big stick and to contribute to the party out of combat.

Have this idea of a Shoanti tribesman who went on a big walk when he was expelled from his tribe now he has returned and is looking for a home.

Answers:

1. Been playing PbP games for 7+ years
2. Central Europe: GMT+1. In my experience gaming with folks from the states works well if games move at a 1-3 posts per player per day rate. If things go way faster then I have 30+ posts to read in the morning and that can be a problem. Slower is no problem although I prefer games that move ahead fairly steadily.
3. On a normal day I'm around a computer 12 hours a day. I'll usually post to games once in the morning and another one or two times per day in the afternoon or evening hours if a thread sees action during daytime for me. Work related travel absences will come a few times a year.
4. Shark

Scarab Sages

dotting for interest. I am thinking of either some form of ranger or maybe a catfolk ninja!

questions:

1.yes i am currently involved in 3 PBP's at the moment.
2. Central time zone in the US although I work the graveyard shift so i tend to be sleeping from about 9 am to 3pm.
3.3 to 4 times a day, or, 700 times from midnight to 5 am (boring job what can i say)
4.A herring... what else would you use to cut things down with

Hello Meninite! Once more thank you for running this AP. I am sure you know Avan the Unwan...the Aloof! He's a monk with the Martial Artist Archetype I hope the archetype is okay with you.

Answers:

1. Yes
2. GMT+3
3. Plenty
4. Barracuda

Hello TheNine, fancy meeting you here.

Scarab Sages

I get about... has to do with not sleeping really. Good to see ya!

Same here! Maybe we'll be playing this game together too.

Answers:

1. Have you played PbP(Play by post) before?
Actually I have, and still do. On Obsidian portal I play a divine hunter (Paladin) named Aric Azure. A somewhat simple man with strong beliefs and surrounded by wiser comrades, always willing to aid him with a good advice. Also I was chosen for another Jade Regent pbp, but alas for unknown reasons our gm vanished in a puff of purple smoke.
2. What is your Time Zone"
I am living in germany, am german, but I do hope that my english won´t pose mayor problems. My timezone is GMT.
3. How often do you think you will be able to post per day?
I can post everyday and also do so. (Exceptions are holidays)
4. I'm thinking of a fish, which one?
The lovely tuna, who died honorably so that his meat could grace your tuna sandwich!

Hey Meninite, great to see the thread.

Thanks for running this Meninite. I would still love to join :)

And thanks for giving this toon another chance.

This is the wizard that was in the "Onward wayward

Spoiler:
The last GM commented that I had a lot of melee with no real casters. Would it help to know on a table top game I am running an 18th level trickster and I switch to melee guys for a change. Casters can be a lot of fun, but so can melee :)

I have a rogue I have played on PBP
I am in the Central time zone.
I can post at least once per day
How about an angler fish

Sovereign Court

This is my resubmission from the previous Jade Regent AP recruitment Galford Dao

1. Yes. Am also running a few.
2. GMT +8
3. More than once for weekdays. Weekend at least once.
4. You tell me the fish and I'll try to find out more about it.

First: Thank you for choosing to take this on.

Second: The majority of the character submission was simply cut'n'pasted (and edited for the display tags to work again) from my submission in GM Lugos' thread.

I present: Fujihiro Dun, human Samurai

Questions:
1. Have you played PbP(Play by post) before? Yes.

2. What is your Time Zone? Central US

3. How often do you think you will be able to post per day? Normally a couple of times a day, but usually only between 1630ish and 2230ish weeknights. Weekdays when I get out of bed more easily than others, I may get a post in between 0530 and 0615, but those are pure bonus. I am not allowed to access this sort of entertainment while at work.

4. I'm thinking of a fish, which one? Hmmm . . .. Well, Oriental Carp have been in the news recently. I'll guess Oriental Carp. The reality that the reason they are in the news is that they are an uncontrolled invasive species, or creatures which are not where they belong and have found a place without concern over their natural predators/enemies, and how that relates to the whole Jade Regent story line is just a bonus.

Backstory Sketch:

Fujihiro Dun's earliest memories are of his father's stories. They involved creatures unlike any in Varisia, called Oni, and the fact that some Oni were trying to kill the Kaijutsus. The Kaijutsus had settled into Sandpoint, changing their name and hiding the secrets of their birth. Fujihiro Akodo had come with them, having promised to protect their lives with his own.

When it became clear that the Kaijutsus were going to remain in Sandpoint, Akodo sought out a local bride so that he could train the next generation of protector for the next generation of the family.

Akodo stayed with Ameiko's father and older brother when she went adventuring, but Dun was too young to go with her. It was a risk that had to be accepted, because there were no other survivors with whom to split the duties, and two needed the protection more than one.

Akodo's stories built up an image of the Kaijutsus in Dun's mind that any real person would be very hard pressed to live up to. They were literally painted as larger than life figures, working hard to hide behind these lesser caricatures that they were hoping would prove enough to keep their true identities secret. One thing Akodo was very careful about, was that he never told Dun who the Kaijutsus really are, why the Oni are after them, or why their survival was important enough for their own family to be dedicated to nothing else.

Akodo has spent the past many years working as a smith, an artisan working arms and armor when there is a need, or spare time, but focusing on the simpler items required for the daily lives of those around them.

As Dun grew, Akodo taught him the methods and tools the family had used to protect the lives of the Kaijutsus. Providing him training in weaponry and techniques very rare in Varisia, and teaching him to wear Akodo's own battlefield armor. This armor is in marvelous repair, as should be expected of the smith's own armor, but it bears none of the marks of clan or family that someone familiar with the social niceties around such armor would expect.

While practicing during an early Spring evening, Akodo said something that Dun hadn't expected. “While you have much experience to gain, your training is as complete as I can make it. You are now truly Samurai. You have accepted your obligation to protect those calling themselves Kaijutsu, now down to just Ameiko. Should their secret come to light, only then can you publicly declare your servitude, using our true family name, Daidoji. I can not risk her safety by revealing what I know. You can not risk her safety by advertising our true name unless her secret is revealed. If it is, you will know. If this comes to pass, our true name can only help.”

Then they went back to their daily lives, to simply being a part of Sandpoint, watching and waiting in case they would need to reveal themselves. Dun, continuing to watch Ameiko from afar, always feeling as though he is stargazing, but never understanding why.

For now, Dun has access to some of his father's back-up equipment. A simpler set of armor and a normal quality blade.

The stuff in the second spoiler is pretty free-form, because I do character generation by hand. I try to mark out the sections required to use the character and to figure out how the build was made in order to provide as much clarity as possible.

I have not assigned the Favored Class bonus.

I am still waffling about whether Childhood Crush or Hero Worship better expresses Dun's attitude towards Ameiko, because I think neither is perfect. I've stuck with Childhood Crush right now, because it is easier to have him "grow into" that kind of interaction to make it become more accurate.

Please, let me know if I missed anything or you would like to see an adjustment of some sort. A cooperative story-telling game sometimes requires altering characters a bit in order to make the cooperation easier, and the game more fun.

I don't make a profile until/unless selected for a game.

Can you Post your character in this thread please.

Thanks Meninite, Amber and nightdeath for the explanations on how the NPC's interactions would work (although I had understood it the first time Meninite explained). What I found alien was that at some point there could be a huge lag between what is going on in the 'group' adventure and what is going on in the spoiler tags. I am not complaining, just trying to wrap my head around it.

Just an idea that poped up: once the caravan leaves, why not simply create a separate thread for campfire interactions. The thread might or might not be spoiler intensive but at least it would not be plagued with the adventure. MAYBE it might be less messy... but somehow I have doubts...

On a different topic: So meninite, what do you think about the antagonize feat... I gave my opinion but never got any feedback.

Liberty's Edge

Just a quick point on some of the back stories.

It's impossible for anyone to have any knowledge regarding Amiko's heritage. As far as anyone knows the Kaijitsus were just normal Virisian nobles.

I think of the multi-line posting as Primary Story and Extended Side-Lines.

Extended Side-Lines can provide marvelous characterization opportunities. They can also become unwieldy and take a great deal of effort to keep straight (which is which, where do they fall in the prime story line [what is known/has happened or not known/happened at that point], how many should be kept open at once, etc.).

I have appreciated the opportunity for Extended Side-Lines when I have seen them, but generally they either receive little support or they begin to dominate the game.

Them dominating the game is really only a problem if someone is excluded or uninterested.

Them receiving little support (and either GM or players can stop supporting them, either makes the premise hard to continue) generally just means "this isn't that kind of game." Nothing wrong with a variety of play styles, as long as everyone manages to enjoy themselves.

If the game is focusing on initiative order in combat, extended side-lines provide a really nice way to keep everyone involved in the story while everyone waits for that player on the other side of the planet to have a chance to post their combat action . . ..

As a rule, I think they are a good thing (in case you couldn't tell). Group dynamics will determine the value of Extended Side-Lines to the group. I think they are probably one of the best ways to try to handle the Jade Regent relationship questions in a PBP environment.

That's a pretty important limitation, that destroys several character concepts, including mine.

Including this limit in the character generation rules would have allowed me not to post a character which will automatically be refused. I'll have to see if I am inspired for a different kind of background, and what kind of character would be produced as a result.

Grand Lodge

Hello and thank you for offering to run Jade Regent. May I present for consideration Hithil Andosana, elf wizard (divination specialty) and younger sibling of Shalelu. The stats and extensive background are all in the profile. I used a 20-point buy system and the campaign trait I choose was younger sibling (obviously).

A bit about the guy at the keyboard:
I'm retired (yay) and thus I find myself able to post 3-4 times a day on most days. I like to assume that if it doesn't happen in character, it doesn't happen. I've also never played Jade Regent and this will be my first full-caster character, which I've been always interested in playing.

Now for your questions:

1. Have you played PbP(Play by post) before?
Yes - I'm actually in two campaigns at the moment where the other players might post 1-2 times a day (and most of their posts are like "i light a torch"), and I find myself always waiting for them to post and actually do something. I generally post 3-4 times a day. I wouldn't apply if I didn't have excessive time to post for a third campaign. That's part of being retired I suppose. I have informed both GMs that I am applying for a third campaign, both of which said it was okay given how much I post.
2. What is your Time Zone?
I'm US West Coast - Las Vegas. I wake up around 6:30a.m. and go to bed about 9PM. The vast majority of my posts are from 7:30a.m. to about 5:30pm, since most folks are European or US East coast.
3. How often do you think you will be able to post per day?
3-4 times a day is pretty easy. If I travel, I post via my phone 2-3 times a day.
4. I'm thinking of a fish, which one?
Puffer fish, obviously. They're funny but with deadly poison inside. Hmmmm, why are thinking about the puffer fish?

It's impossible for anyone to have any knowledge regarding Amiko's heritage. As far as anyone knows the Kaijitsus were just normal Virisian nobles.

That's a pretty important limitation, that destroys several character concepts, including mine.

Including this limit in the character generation rules would have allowed me not to post a character which will automatically be refused. I'll have to see if I am inspired for a different kind of background, and what kind of character would be produced as a result.

I never said characters would be refused for back story, but unless you are meta gaming, you as a player can't "Know" any of that information since it's only in the AP itself(which you shouldn't be reading)

I've got a Dwarven Ranger (switch-hitter) in mind. I'm thinking he's an acquaintance of Shalelu. I'll try to have him finished up for you in the next few days.

But doesn't Ameiko look asian in a land of western/native looking people?

She does, but she was born on this side of the world. When I say heritage I don't mean race.

** spoiler omitted **

A few things:

1. In order to take Oni-Spawn(Which is fine) you need to take the Fiendish Heritage feat at Lv1.

2. I can't seem to find the deity Yamatsumi where is it from?

3. Theologian is fine

As a player reading the covers of the AP books, you learn this bit of knowledge, so claims that a player should be unaware of what's about to happen (even without everything that exists on the web about it) seems a little bit of a stretch. I agree that the characters have no reason to know, but saying the players shouldn't know what's in the marketing material for the AP?

Do you find Dun's background to be a violation of your intended limit?

Very interested! I'll look at something's and decide on what class/race to take. Been mulling over a Varisian sorcerer (Starsoul) with the Harrower PrC if available. I'll have more information up later!

MTS
I post several times a day.

Krissina from GM Logos thread, I don't think there's any changes required, but I'll go through it properly later.

Silver Crusade

Bowing humbly,
"I offer my sword. I am Caikahn of Nerosyan. Good day to you."

Q&A:
1. Have you played PbP(Play by post) before? Yes, I consider myself proficient yet lighthearted.
2. What is your Time Zone" EST but I travel weekly throughout USA (Eastern - Pacific and varies from week to week)
3. How often do you think you will be able to post per day? 2-3 for sure, more if necessary but weekends can be tricky with children in tow.
4. I'm thinking of a fish, which one? Fugu

Hoo! Here is my initial entry. I will go back through & double check to see if he meets all of your requirements later as I am at work right now, but I believe he should. If you would like anything more from me character or story-wise, please let me know.

Full disclosure:
I have already played him in a Jade Regent game that made it just to Brinewall before collapsing, so I am somewhat acquainted with the adventure up to that point. I am good at keeping IC & OOC knowledge separate however.

Answers:
1) Yes, with this character in fact. Actually I am presently involved in several PbP campaigns, including a Carrion Crown AP that I am running.
2) Central North America, not certain where that falls in terms of GMT.
3) At least once per day, depending on the pace everyone else sets. I had a bad habit of running 'full speed ahead' with this AP last time. Occasionally, I have real life events intrude on my posting ability, in those instances, I make it a point to warn people ahead of time.
4) A Red Herring of course...

I've been playing RPG's for approximately the last three decades, obviously this has included a number of different rules-sets. Sometimes this means I am a resource for mechanics, sometimes this means I mix up which rule goes with which system...

Yamatsumi is from the Dragon Empires Gazetteer. There is some info on the PF wiki (here) but I find it rather lacking as it only contains the mechanical info, not anything about who he is.

As for the feat, that's fine. I'm not used to it as most only use the feat for the variant ability list and not for the variants based on heritage, bringing them on equal footing with Aasimars, Dhampirs and Skinwalkers, all of which also don't need a feat to get a racial variant.

I don't have to much issue with the story, but I may need to retroactively kill off your characters family.
