If you have the misfortune of being a caster or a ranged combat specialist, a light slashing or piercing weapon isn’t going to do you much good from within the belly of the beast. That means it's time to improvise.
Nowhere in gaming is there a more flavorful situation. You’re being crushed to death in a monster’s throat! You’ve got to do something! On the other hand, nowhere in gaming is there a more nebulously defined set of mechanics. So like… Is there any way to cast fireball so that it doesn’t hit me too? How long can I breathe in there? Can my buddies try and give the monster the Heimlich maneuver?
Therefore, as an exercise in adventurer preparedness, I propose we brainstorm our best creative method for escaping from a “swallow whole” situation. Alternatively, I will also accept clever actions designed to harm your big-mouthed foe from the inside out. All clear? Alrighty then. See you down in the comments!

Not necessarily a creative way to get out, but I thought it was pretty creative to ask if you could remain inside...
Jotund Troll vs. Rogue... I ruled that the Rogue gets his Sneak Attack inside the belly of the beast.
Rogue asks if he can stay inside even after dealing enough damage to escape.
It is a race, may the best "man" win.
The Rogue won... the Jotund Troll ran out of HP first... and everyone outside of the Jotund Troll just sees blades poking out of the skin here and there and everywhere, then the top half of the Jotund Troll falls lifelessly to the ground. Its legs and pelvis still standing there, with a nearly dead Rogue dancing his happy dance in the bloody bowl of the pelvis.
Do Rogues get Sneak Attack when Swallowed Whole? I don't know, or even care about, the official answer. Lol. At my table, your insides are denied your Dexterity bonus to their AC, your guts are flat-footed to attacks coming from within your guts. Lol.

Swallow Whole also shuts down certain Dex-based builds that don't invest in Str at all. In one high-tier PFS adventure, I got to see a heavily min-maxed--and supremely overconfidant--swashbuckler PC get swallowed by a remorhaz thanks to a couple lucky attack rolls. Fortunately for him, the rest of the party killed it within the next round or so, before he was completely incinerated. But seeing the player genuinely worried about his PC's survival was some delicious schadenfreude.
In a 3E game, my wife's low-Dex cleric once got swallowed by a half-dragon T-rex. She had a bracelet of friends, and was tempted to bring one of the other PCs to her. I don't recall if she actually tried it, so don't know if the GM would have allowed it. But she did use her Destruction domain power and Power Attack to punch a huge hole in its side.

Damaging from the inside is the norm. I'd also allow somehow getting the swallower nauseous resulting in the swallowee being vomited forth, like a Stinking Cloud cast inside. Other than damage and teleportation, I don't really have any good suggestions.
The last time someone in our group was swallowed she died, and the time before that the fact that he was swallowed saved his bacon from the monster swallowing him.

The classic solution to being swallowed whole is the Tree Feather Token; very few things are able to handle a 60' oak tree springing up inside their stomach...
I certainly hope you aren't in there with it when it expands to full size. While the HP and AC of your flesh isn't exactly spelled out like a monster's is, I'm sure you might suffer a little bit more than the monster does for the brief moment before it pops.

Not really, think about the shape of a tree; a 60 ft tall oak tree has a trunk that's maybe 6 ft in diameter. You're the one setting the tree - you can put it so your long axis is parallel to the trunk. Mr monster is big enough to swallow a human, what's going to take it apart is the vertical growth and the expansion of the top cover branches (which will in fact protect you from falling bits of monster...)

so with Energy Resistance and possibly a low damage post swallow, why would you want out, especially at high CRs? The creature is much more vulnerable to your attacks and spells from the inside AND can't attack you...
having Blink ongoing gives you options though living critters can be problematic.
A Portable Hole could literally expand your hidey hole.
It could be a good place to stash your body while Magic Jarring the creature... you can regurgitate your body if needed.
Alas, Gaseous Form out the back door (potion sponge if necessary)...

There is something visually pleasing about the thought of a Gathlain with Body Thorns or a Tiefling with variant ability #61... both of them being able to just grow a bunch of spikes. Pow, spikes everywhere... should have ate someone else, bud.
Things like a Grippli's Toxic Skin would be thematically flavorful, but ultimately probably ineffective... especially in juxtapose to something like the Alchemist's Nauseating Flesh Discovery.

Do this little maneuver from the Order of the Stick and get vomited up.
