What Gotchas are you talking about?
Considering when it last audited all my characters (11) and their 150+ sheets took a little over 17 hours to audit/confirm/verify.
I'd say those players that wish to avoid PFS due to "gotchas" would be referring to that about of recordkeeping as "gotchas".

Hmm, "emeritus" implies someone has given me permission to retain the title... and people routinely put "cranky" in front of me anyway. I may just get a shirt made that says "Pathfinder V-C: Abandon in Place" like NASA does with their used-up scrap that is too big to move to the dumpster...

The re-roll situation has not changed since Season 7, and one still receives only a single re-roll—and only when in possession of a qualifying shirt or other merchandise. I have not had the means or time to investigate the exact nature and source of this misprint, but I assure you that it is by my initial assessment an error introduced somewhere in the Guide's reorganization, rewriting, and/or editing. We'll address this and similar concerns after Gen Con.
Please help correct this misunderstanding by directing people to this post.

Ranks assigned to Craft skills are used only to perform Day Job checks, not to craft mundane items, with the following exceptions
Alchemists can use Craft (alchemy).
Gunslingers can use Craft (gunsmithing).
Investigators can use Craft (gunsmithing).??
I think it should be alchemy.

Well, one reason is so that future GMs who look at the sheet might wonder why (for example) a low-Con wizard didn't fall victim to that nasty disease that everyone gets at the end of that scenario - if the info is there, they don't have to wonder or ask.
We don't track healing because being damaged goes away automatically with the indeterminate time between scenarios, but being blind (for example) doesn't.
I see your point, and hopefully you see mine. The higher-ups have decided that this way works best, though.
Not sure about that. Ksenia got through (part) of Bonekeep one with amazing fort rolls. My witch was the only one who didn't get <redacted>. I'd hate for a future lucky player to get stinkeye over "and no one cured you?"
Just my two c-bills.

Huh. Price increase on the new scenarios. Used to be $3.99, now $4.99.
There may have been a discussion in the past about that very possibility...
By last count in that informal poll, 33 posters favored a price increase, and 7 did not.

There's also now a subscription option at a discount, which many folks have asked for...
Terminalmancer |
Bottom of the subscriptions page, apparently! Wish they'd made an announcemnt on the blog or something before this went live. It's a 20% discount, so the price remains comparable as long as you subscribe.
Having already purchased the first three, it looks like the subscription support is buggy--it still wants to charge me $12. Ah well. Perhaps I'll remember next month.

Since you are no longer allowed to do non lethal damage to another PC, this does seem to create situations where you either have to let a player attack someone that the others do not, or kick that player from the table. Yes, you should pull them aside and talk to them as a first resort, but a lot of venues do not give PFS groups enough time to allow for this. It seems that on the one hand, players can no longer mess with each other through non lethal damage. On the other hand, there seems to be less options to de escalate certain situations.
Terminalmancer |
If you bought three full price it would be charging you $15.
I did. That's the problem.
It's not checking to see if you own the stuff you're buying, there's no option to wait for next month, and you can't gift a subscription. So it's going to double-bill you for content you already "have."
(I guess I should explain that I'm just trying to clarify the problem, not make a big deal of it. You'd actually have to go through the whole checkout process in order for it to actually double-bill you. I just hope I remember to subscribe next month!)

There are a couple of things that will probably be clarified with the Guide. Does anyone have any insight as to if they will just do an errata, or put out a new guide. I like to print out a guide to give to new players, but don't want to print out a couple of copies, only to throw them out in a week.

It turns out that the Season 8 guide contains a line that the older guides do not, i.e. "As a general guideline, if a character receives any mechanical benefit connected to a deity, that character must worship the appropriate deity."
This would appear to be a new rule that restricts deity-specific spells to followers of that deity only. Well, spells from the ISG book anyway; spells from other books have always had this restriction.
But that might not be what they meant, so this could use some clarification.

The line is a clarification based on the existing FAQ and the conversations that surround it.
So, if your class grants domains, or a feat or trait requires you to worship a deity, or a magic item has additional functions for worshipers, you only receive those benefits if you worship that deity.
Basically, in PFS, "worship" is defined as a relationship wherein you are loyal enough to a deity that the deity is willing to give you something back.
Venerate is any relationship you have to a deity or philosophy that is unable or unwilling to give something back.

Note that in the *specific* case of spells (and only spells)
Many of the spells in this chapter originated with the faithful of a particular deity and are more common among the worshipers of that god. Such spells are denoted with the god's name in parentheses after the spell's name. Worshipers of the spell's associated deity always treat the spell as common, and need not research the spell in order to prepare or learn it. Despite this, all the spells in this chapter are available to members of other faiths, though some temples or religious organizations may proscribe the use of specific spells. Additionally, arcane spellcasters have unlocked the secrets of casting particular spells.
Worship is not required.

Still missing from the guide.
How to figure animal companion and eidolon hit points?
How classes with a spell book or familiar like spell book can pay 50% of the scribing cost to get access to spell?
What and how you can upgrade magical items?
I felt these were things that should have been added to the guide. I feel the guide should be the place that I go to to make sure I am doing everything right with my characters. I should not have to spend a half hour looking through the forums for unclear answers and searching the faq to see if my answers lie there. I realize the guide has a page count or word count limit, but since we added a glossary, perhaps we should have added a faq to the back that could have mentioned my above notes and others that I have not thought of.

Thats in the FAQ. They get half max, round down from the total (not on every die)

Also in the faq, although refered to as a rare event when its a standard operating procedure.

But I think what Torrquan is getting at, why should a new player have to look up that information up in the FAQ, when 99% of the rest of character creation is in the guide? Animal Companion/Eidolons are basic class features for at least 4 classes off the top of my head. If a new player shows up and wants to create a Summoner, why do they need to check the Guide and the FAQ, as opposed to this other player who wants to create a Fighter?

Very few class-specific rules rules exist in the Guide. It is a place for general rules as they apply to all characters. Specific rules such as companion HP, spellbooks, etc belong in the FAQ, IMHO. Even "simple" classes like fighters have questions regarding their builds. Again, all of that belongs in the FAQ
Kurald Galain RPG Superstar 2009 Top 32 |
Keirine makes a good point though, why should someone have to know to check a different document just because they want a combat pet?
For the same reason that he has to check different rulebooks?
I mean, there's also the additional resources document to check, and the campaign clarifications.

Staple them together to create one document?
Take an inch and a half of column space under the Hit Point section in the first appendix and add a table that describes how to do it, similar to the table already in that section that outlines character hit points?

I disagree. Rules belong in the guide (if PFS specific) or the CRB. If you need to consult the FAQ to get a rule, it's missing and should be an errata to either the guide or CRB.
The FAQ should be clarifying only.

It drops out of the rules that PC classes only get max hit points he first die , animal companions don't have pc classes.

With the existence of the Campaign Clarifications document, I do agree that the information in the Pathfinder Society FAQ could be absorbed into that document then eliminating the need for the Pathfinder Society portion of the FAQ. The Pathfinder Society FAQ was serving the purpose that the Campaign Clarifications now seems to serve in its place.
Putting everything from the Pathfinder Society FAQ that applies to a specific Character Class into the guide would add more pages to a document that not many players actually read (I could be wrong on that part.). The idea behind the Guide (Please correct me if I am wrong.) is to work as a general reference to the rules of the Pathfinder Society Organized Play program. The new guide in Appendix 1, does reference the Campaign Clarifications document in regards to how classes and archetypes work outside of the core rulebook but needs to include the core classes and how features such as Animal Companions hit points work in Pathfinder Society.

As I am understanding, the Guide to the Pathfinder Society Roleplaying Guild works as a general reference to the rules of the Pathfinder Society Organized Play program. The Pathfinder Society FAQ worked as a means to inform players of how particular features worked in Pathfinder Society. In previous versions of the Guide, there was no reference to the FAQ in character creation but it is referenced for other rulings made by Campaign Management (in addition to the PFS Blogs and Messageboard posts) in other parts of the guide. The current guide does refer to the Campaign Clarifications document in Appendix 1: Character Creation but seems to only reference features for classes outside the core rulebook. An expansion to include the core classes as well and absorption of the FAQ into the Campaign Clarifications document may be something to consider.

From a usability perspective, these things should all be in the same place--in a set of character creation rules that deal with the process of building a PFS character from start to finish. Presumably it makes sense to limit those rules to the CRB, but ACs are Core. Whether or not those appear in the Guide is a separate question.
Keeping rules necessary to build a CRB character--but only some of them, like how to calculate animal companion (etc.) HP--in the FAQ goes against the common understanding of what an FAQ is for, which is to answer questions and provide clarifications on things that were already explained elsewhere. The same language problem occurs with the Campaign Clarifications document. Why would a rule be in a clarifications document? Sure, we know to look there, but most people won't.
I realize Paizo does things differently. Rules appear in FAQs and "clarifications" don't have to be clarifications at all but are frequently significant changes to published text. New players and many old players don't know those things. Assuming that people will consistently be able to figure out bad naming conventions is always a poor assumption. It is much better to put things in places where your users--your players--will know to look for them.
I'm with the "include it in the Guide!" crowd. If that isn't viable, I suggest renaming the FAQ and/or Campaign Clarifications to reflect the actual content and importance of those pages.

Yes, include it in the Guide, as that's the obvious place for it. That's also what I was saying about the Cleric's and Unarmed Strike Feat. It makes no sense to me that one part of the rule is in one place, and that a pretty obvious additional "clarification" should be in another, when it seems much easier and wise to simply alter the original PFS specific rule in the first place so it applies to all Deities with Unarmed Strike for Character Creation.
Work smarter, not harder.

...I realize the guide has a page count or word count limit...
I'd like to ask the PFS newbie pink elephant question: why is there a page/word count limit on an electronic only document?
If I want a printed copy of the guide, don't I have to print it myself? I've never seen an officially printed one before, are they available somewhere? If I'm responsible for printing, then I can always choose what to print and what not to print, so whether the document is module length at 64 pages, or core rule book length at 575 pages, I can always print what I need. But having to rely on reliable and affordable internet access (*cough* Gen Con *cough*) in order to get all the rules seems problematic. I know of at least 2 LGS that don't have customer wifi at all, and one of which is underground so you can't even get cell signal to use your data plan to go searching for things. While I can download a PDF directly to my device and view it normally, it's much messier to download a web page for offline viewing.
I'd rather have the PFS document follow the same construct as the hardback books where you can download a PDF per chapter, because then you could make the FAQ/Clarifications its own chapter and easily download updates to it. It would also make changes to the other chapters easier, such as cleric feats and animal companion HP's, since it would simply be updates to a 'character creation' chapter.
A PFS book that is 156 pages long may seem daunting to a new player, but a guide that is 64 pages long and requires you to instinctively know to go online and hunt down 3 different web pages (not counting blog and messageboard posts) to get your answers is practically unfeasible since the guide doesn't prominently point out that this needs to be done, and as mentioned having internet access is guaranteed.
