Phantom,
My best guess? He some how drugged her. That's the best I can come up with.
But even so this episode proved what you said earlier, Mon-el is pretty much dead weight.
I still don't know WHY he's there other than to be a romantic lead stuff.
Hell even if you discount Maggie as a sideplot, at least she and Alex HAVE chemistry! Or hell something akin to it. I find them WAY more believable as a couple than say, Winn and his alien GF (who I do like but I think is clearly not good for him), and ESPECIALLY...this shipping.
I'm honestly not a fan of ANY of the 'relationships' on this show and they spend WAY too much time focusing on them. Winn's is probably the least believable... but Mon-el and Miss Martian seem to have only been introduced because they're the same species as the main characters... Other than that... no point to them at all.
Frankly, I didn't like this season much at all... which REALLY surprised me because I thought the first season was my favorite DC show last year. Supergirl was happy and optimistic and full of hope. Her main goal was simply helping people... The costume and powers were spot on...
Now? I used to enjoy using my own comic/Roleplaying knowledge to really get into the plot. Big fight starts and I can predict what powers would be used for what situation... Use heat vision on the gas tanks... Speed tornado for the gas... Freeze Breath... whatever. And I came pretty close.
Now?? It's like playing in a game with jerk DM who's railroading a game. Sister is kidnapped... use your senses.. nope that didn't work. Use your telepathy, nope it's blocked... shapeshift to dad... nope, he saw through it. Hack the security... nope he thought of that too. Well, all the DEO agents are tagged with a tracker... Nope, that's not working.
Does the bad guy have these kind of resources? Is he alien based or have luthor tech?? No... Shut up... play his game, his way, or else!!
It's just... bad storytelling. Did they ever figure out HOW he was blocking the telepathy to prevent it from happening again? Way too many important plot points handwaved away.
Worse yet, they're even draining away the optimistic happy attitude that Kara had and replacing it with bitterness and whining when everything doesn't go her way...
Ugghhh...
I loved the Superman cameo's, but the rest of this season has been a wash for me.

Thomas Seitz |

I think this season isn't so much as wash as it was "This was kind of what I expected" in a sophomore season. Mainly that without a truly credible threat, Supergirl hasn't really reacted much other than having Cadmus kind of be the HYDRA for Supergirl.
I like the relationships. Just not fan of some of them.

phantom1592 |

It makes me sad that Smallville went 10 years, but Supergirl is out of threats by season 2...
Relationships as a rule aren't bad... all the shows have them. However, it shouldn't dominate... everything, and there should still be room for superheroics. If they don't adjust things quick... I don't think I'll be in for season 3 :-/

phantom1592 |

You think so? That would certainly keep me interested. Any clues I've missed so far?
With Darkseid and apokolypse in Justice League I wouldn't have thought they'd go that route on CW... I would have thought the Legion a surer bet (Who I am usually pretty meh about)... but really have no actual evidence one way or the other.

Ehhh.. I let that one slide. I've seen it said in multiple shows that the idea you can be good enough to notice someone tailing you around is pretty much fantasy, Especially in places like New York City or other metropolis'...
While they SHOULDN'T be able to be take by surprise like that... It's the least of the sins in this show...
For that matter, how did he GET Alex in the first place? While she may not notice random guy on busy street... she shouldn't be able to be suckerpunched and dragged away?!
Except if the heroes attempt it one time, then the villain spots them immediately. And not seeing a tail once, yes, I buy that. Not noticing them for weeks, everywhere they go?

Oh and Reya needs to tell me how she's gotten control of Superman...
First thing that came to mind was a re-tread of the mind control device from last year.

So....Cat Grant/Calista Flockhart proves she's worth the money. I just wish CW would find a way to find the budget to move back!
Yeah, you don't realize how much you miss her until she comes back. She packed a season's worth of snarkiness into 30 minutes. Snapper has some of that, but he just comes off as a crotchety old man most of the time.
On a side note, am I the only one who hopes next year's meta-plot doesn't involve a xenophobic billionaire who has to team up with the good guys to fend off invading Kryptonians/Daxamites/Martians/Vulcans/Whatever? I was hoping Supergirl would break the CW super-show trend of holding the same meta-plot every year. You know, Oliver has to stop a genocidal madman from destroying/killing everyone in the city. Barry has to stop the evil Speedster before someone close to him dies. Etc. For all its flaws, at least Agents of SHIELD changes things up from year to year.

Tar,
Agents kind of has to since they don't have the budget for the FX at times AND the fact Marvel has a restriction on not having Mutants.
But I do agree that CW has flaws about the stories at times.
Mostly I think we all agree, Snapper is more crotchety than snarky. Cat Grant/Calista is completely snarky and awesome.
Btw is anyone surprised that we have a Durlan now? I wonder if that means she's might be the mother of Chameleon Boy (or like an ancestor)
Joel,
Maybe she needed time. I dunno.

So:
1) The President was not born in the United States. This makes it illegal for her to even run for the office. Which could be used to comment on the Birther Conspiracy if this show had any political savvy. And an entire US agency promises to keep this secret, and allow a criminal* in the White House.
* due to the act of running for and occupying an office she is not eligible for.
2) And I apologize to The Flash.
Aliens from the Rao star-system with Kryptonian powers. Check.
Planning to turn the Earth into "New-[Homeworld]". Check.
Mind Controlling Superman. Check.
Calista Flockhart was the best part of the episode.
Also, anyone notice how Guardian and the Daxamite soldiers look alike. almost like Guardian should have a better color palette, like maybe blue and gold? Making him bright and inspiring like Clark. Or Barry.
Funny how on Earth-1, heroes can wear a mask and still be inspiring, not scary.

Do we know for certain that Olivia's Durlan parents (or at least mother) did not come to Earth/America decades ago, and give birth to a daughter here?
I can't remember what Olivia said about her world "Doorla." As long as her parents weren't stranded here, she could have been born in the US, raised on Durla, and returned as an adult.

I wanted Mon-el (and what is up with him having an El name if he's not actually House of El? BAH!) to get his Valor costume, but NOOOOO.
He'll be back.
I'm thinking...
The other pod is either Doomsday or H'el.
Most likely Doomsday.
I'm seriously happy with Hoechlin's Superman. He's just so good with it.

GreenDragon1133 |
I agree with jemstone. What was said and done seems to fit.
I would have liked a follow up on Clark talking to Jimmy, per Cat's request.
Star City? Boy, that would be a short fight. No heroes at all. And probably no Queen Consolidated.
Biggest complaint. Mon spent the whole season on Earth. And was never physically on par with Supergirl. Couldn't even fly. Now suddenly in the finale all Daxamites have flight and Kryptonian strength?
And, if Rhea was laced with Green K all along, and her skin is obviously not lead lined, how did this not come up sooner?

Yeah it was some shade but at the same time cool to see Hoechlin's Superman willing to do what it took to fight Zod.
As for flying Daxamites...pretty sure it was jumping, not flying.
It's been implied that somehow Kryptonians must have better solar absorption powers.
I still don't think Kara actually BEAT Kal, but she did win. Probably because Superman held back a little due to civilians.
It might be Doomsday...but how would Doomsday REIGN anything? Plus I don't see how that fits in.
Regardless I DO hope more Cat Grant keeps coming up. She's the reason these last two episodes were that DAMN good.
But for me, the best WTF and suddenly "Awesome!" moment, all those White Martians coming to fight for the humans.
Still uncomfortable with M'gann and J'onn being shipped. Just because it's something I never considered...and you know Young Justice.

Damon Griffin |

Not being familiar with Reign, I Googled her. She sounds really boring: a "worldkiller" created by a group of Kryptonian scientists.
There was also a 2011 storyline called Reign of Doomsday, but it seems really convoluted and pretty much nothing but the title could be used in Supergirl.

Isn't that the same backstory as Doomsday?

phantom1592 |

I can actually accept the idea that Daxamites have skin dense as lead.
What I didn't like was all the talk about how she was able to beat Kal... but the physically weaker Daxamite was supposed to be a legitimate threat??
Now if they said that Kal broke something in her in that epic beatdown and she hadn't recovered yet... then maybe. However it was pretty well implied that the fortress made everyone alright again.
Also not a fan of the REPEATED pushing her on the pedestal about how she Beat SUPERMAN... No Really, you beat me... No I wasn't weakened at all... No... You're TOTALLY Earth's Champion and I'm not!! It IS her show so it is what it is.. (still they could have gotten away with ONE comment, and then stating that this fight was PERSONAL or something...)
I'm curious what they're going to do next season... This episode REALLY felt like a 'series finale' and not a 'Season finale'... It would have been a good ending till they added the '35 years ago' bit...
Curious what they are going to do with Cat? There was a reason that she wasn't in this season that much... and that reason didn't disappear. To my knowledge the filming isn't moving back to LA.
It was weird seeing her take over the office again and take over Catco again... only to see the building completely destroyed... That made sense in a 'we're not going to deal with CatCo next year... But then to rebuild it for the ending there?? (Seriously, that building is NOT structurally salvageable... but whatever.)
While it was always stupid to put Jimmy in charge of her Girl-power media empire she'd spent years building... after he'd been there less than year... It was done for a meta reason with her Flockhart backing off the show...
Lot of decisions have me curious here.

phantom1592 |

As for Kara being Superman, eh...it's not inconceivable. Just unlikely.
Agreed.
I didn't have a problem with her winning, It was more the episode's attitude to it. It seemed more like She' so awesome she's tougher than Superman!!! or a Passing of the torch or something as opposed to the luck of the draw or whatever it should have been.
I'd say on any given Superman vs. Supergirl fight she's got a good chance at pulling in the win, but the next time they meet... it could just as easily swing back around the other way.

In the comics, Supergirl was supposed to be stronger than Superman because she was older, originally.
Then he was stronger because he'd had 20-something years worth of yellow sunlight absorbtion, and she'd only had a few years.
Even in this episode, Mon-El 'might be able to stay longer because he's absorbed more yellow sunlight,' but then Rhea is arbitrarily as strong as Supergirl despite having only been on Earth for a week or so. So, whatever!
Same with the Man of Steel movie. Clark has thirty-something years to acclimate to Earth and his super-powers, and Zod takes less than 24 hours to get all caught up.
It seems like whenever some writer attempts to create some sort of narrative rules for this sort of thing, it gets contradicted, sometimes in the same storyline.

For Superman his weakness came from the fact that he was fighting from a place of fear due to the Silver K. Wheras Kara was driven by what usually motivates them both. From Kal's pont of view "I have to beat Zod". From Kara's point of view "I have to save Kal"
We all know that for the house of El, fighting for the ones they love make them unbeatable.
I'm thinking Eradicator in the capsule.

Accumulation of power VS natural talent and training. Zod was the greatest.....well second greatest warrior on Krypton and adapted insanely quickly.
Rhea...Daxamite warlord, who scouted the planet, knew the effects it would have, and was running on Kryponite (Metallo uses it as a power source so why not). There's a certain symmetry to someone harmed by lead being fueled by radiation.

GreenDragon1133 |
The whole 'she's stronger' originates in the 'Diamond-S/Bat Symbol' book. And was somewhat incoherent, in that at some points this is suggested to be a lie on Clark's part - for various reasons.
My thought is: any Kryptonian will have the 'Kryptonian Power Set' with a degree of charge based on their solar exposure. From there the differences are just like those between Terran Humans. Who has the greater muscle mass? The one who grew up on a farm doing chores, and has a genetic predisposition for greater upper body strength based on gender (assuming Kryptonians to have gender evolution like Terrans - which the visual art supports) or the one who grew up in a Science Guild and then the home of Terran scientists?
Clark has larger muscles - it isn't as obvious in the case of these actors, but in the comics his biceps are larger than her thighs. But, Faora (Military Guild) can still overpower him, because she has superior combat training, while he (often) relies on raw power and brawling.
(I could go on, but I'm rambling at this point).

That's part of it as well. Kara trains every day at this point, either in super powered sparring matches with J'onn and Monel, or in the de-powering red sun room with Alex, who's a match for any member of Team Arrow.
I remember when I was training for a few hours a day. The skill curve starts to climb pretty steeply, pretty fast once your body gets into the habit of combat as a daily occurrence.
Clark is Superman, and a reporter.
Kara is Supergirl, a reporter and a the most front facing agent of a black ops paramilitary group.
