Had a quick question for fellow BT insert users:
I have found that after a few months slight deflection in the insert due to slightly too small dimensions for the box is causing some of the dividers to continually pop out of place. Has anyone played around with their recommended locations for dividers to see if that will fit the game once it is all in the box? I am considering disassembling the unit and gluing/nailing it together so that it doesn't keep coming apart, but I would hate to do anything permanent if that won't work for a final configuration. Monsters are already a close fit for example. I know this is difficult due to no card list, but maybe someone has played around with it using their RotRL cards?
Any thoughts would be most appreciated.

The insert has slots marked with the letter "R" for recommended divider placement for RotR, and I've found that pretty accurate. Here is my box with all 6 adventure decks in it and the dividers in the recommended spots.
I glued mine together, except for the "t-shirt" dividers. I have a slight problem with the dividers not being snug in the skinny column on the right most side, but that is it. In all other cases they fit very snugly and have never popped out.

I did not use glue for mine.
For RotR I kept the recommended configuration for a while but once the last sets came out I rearranged things. Monsters, Barriers, and Boons I kept in their places but I shrunk the Henchmen and did away with the Villain area. I used some of the extra dividers and keep each Adventure's scenario cards, Villains, non-recurring Henchmen and locations in separate areas. I plan to do other sets similarly.

I had a similar issue with mine. I think the columns just weren't tight enough. What I did is a got paper towel and folded it a few times and put it between the insert and the box on the left side. It is practically invisible but pushes the insert enough that none of the inserts slip up anymore so it works for me :D

I dunno if throwing away unused, empty boxes away in favor of a superior storage solution is throwing away pieces of the game.

It came with the game. It was not made specifically to be thrown away (like the wrap the cards come in). It deserves nothing less than death, however for some reason people frown on murder, so I avoid it except on special occasions.
Especially when you own over 100 board games, you want to clear up as much space as possible.
I even consolidate expansions into the original game box if I can and throw the expansion box away because it just takes up unnecessary space.
Oh I know about having a ton of games and trying to find space. There's a reason I have more rooms than a person needs. I also consolidate expansions into the main box if there is a logical way to do so. I won't throw out container pieces, cram anything in, or just toss stuff in until the lid won't close anymore. Some games, like Smash Up, are expansion friendly (even if it did take till the Big Box Expansion to get that way). Others, like my Lord of the Rings board game with 4 different expansions, not so much. Regardless of compactibility though, no boxes or containers will ever be removed from my home unless the game is leaving with it.

By keeping the width margins razor thin. The go7's pretty tight for my preferences. Enough space that we've got all of RoRL and the class decks in one box, but the rows have absolutely no wiggle room. You drop that card in dead-center or it doesn't go in.
I await my monk-punching, Andrew. Our NYC apartment's got no space for leftover plastic, and so down to the trash room the inserts went (much as I love them!) Still got the AP boxes, because I do have some weird hesitation to throw away stuff with art on it, and because we're probably going to do something similar to Hawkmoon: only keep a couple after-market inserts in rotation.

Good idea, I think I will give this a go. Really the deflection is like 1/32" in the middle that is causing the problems, paper towels should fix it up right!

Man, I don't sleeve and I ping off the sides all the time, especially if I'm putting in a few at once. I think it just makes me wince because I feel like I'm chipping them away, knocking them off wood, where the stock box insert's compartments were nice and roomy.
I don't think I'd go back, though. Just having convenient slots to hold a dice bag, character standees, and being able to quickly put removed Basics/Elites into their own compartments instead of shuffling around with the clumsily stacked cardboard boxes is more than enough to make me happy with them.

I sleeve. Considering the amount of play my cards get, the 4 cent per card investment is worth it. If you sleeve, the original insert quickly becomes completely impractical. I prefer the go7 insert over the BT insert, but the BT insert does have one thing going for it ... The BT insert is 27 bucks compared to 31 bucks for the go7insert ...

Oh man.. We threw away the boxes and the stock insert when we set up our BT insert for RoTR. We still haven't even taken the shrink wrap off the S&S base set though.. man.. I think I spend more time on this forum than playing the game due to both of us needing time to actually play. :)

All I gotta say is wow. How long did it take you to make all that?

Did you have to upgrade the screws on the handle? I heard that a lot of cards can be too much weight for the case handle.
Looks sweet. Did I spy Legolas and Aragorn? Are they custom characters?

I don't sleeve, so I'm able to use the box insert as Vic and God intended. One thing I do lack, however, is a place to put removed Basics/Elites--for that one thing alone, I need a separate box (I put the minis we use instead of tokens, dice, and my scenario tracker paperwork all in the big compartment at the back of the box, so the removed cards can't effectively go there).
Hawkmoon269 |
Look in here for Deck Dividers. There is one labeled "Removed". I slip that into the appropriate section and put the removed cards behind the divider.
I think it will fit in the original insert. If not, you should be able to trim it just a bit to make it.

Have not had any problems with the handle as of yet. The lefthand 2 rows are storing my Crytozoic LOTR games atm. I wish I could find a strong enough magentic ring to use to open the top that holds the rulebooks. I have a stack of cobbled together magnets atm.

Necro bump!
I was considering getting another Broken Token PACG Organizer for Wrath of the Righteous, and I came across the following review on the BT site:
And now Broken Token has gone and made their organizer better! The first two organizers I bought were great, but this new redesign on the third improves on an already outstanding product. I really credit them for taking the initiative to improve their product.
Anyone have experience with the updated design, or know what has changed?
yardswimmer |
I can't really speak towards what has changed but I can try to explain how it is now so maybe that can help you out. I know the old design had a miscellaneous section which I can't imagine was to useful since I thought I read there was an issue with putting sleeved cards in there. What they have now are five columns. Four are for your cards and the fifth has a dice try and a place for your character decks. I think the previous had the character decks facing the same direction as the cards you grouped together in the columns. That has changed to where the character decks are facing the edge side of cards which is probably how they got it to work to have four columns of cards. I hope this helps some as I know I probably butchered the description of it.

The designer mentioned updating it on BGG. Here is what he said:
No problems. Just a lot of request to move the dice tray to the narrow lane.
[Update] Submitted the revised plans yesterday. Based on feedback from y'all I have moved the fixed storage for the character decks and the dice to the narrow lane, opening up the four main lanes to be configured however you want. This change does not increase the storage, just changes the configuration. I will likely have pictures in about a month. 12-24-2014

As Hawkmoon did I glued only the fixed parts together and so far it works great. I would love to have the updated layout but I guess it will take some time for it to be available with philibertjeux.
@ MyFly: I am still thinking about discarding them but for now I simply folded them down and set them aside.

I am debating between the BT insert and the 2 inserts from go7gaming. The BT insert seems to be alright from what everyone on these forums have mentioned but has anyone used the cheaper one from go7? For those that are unaware, they have 2 inserts: one that is $24 and one that is $31. The $24 one has no bottom, 4 full lanes and one center lane that is smaller than the rest plus the dividers are wood. The $31 one has 5 full lanes, a bottom and acrylic dividers.
From what I have read here and elsewhere, the $31 go7 insert seems to have lanes that are little too tight. However, the $24 has some fixed areas in the middle and in the outside lanes. Does anyone have experience with this "cheaper" insert?

I have 3 of the $31 go7 boxes. I have found that I need an extra set of dividers per box to set it up the way I want. The first one was a gift and I recently purchased 2 more.
I do not sleeve my cards. The rows are not super wide but they seem to work very well for the game. I like the five row. It leaves plenty of room for dice, figures ans misc stuff. My RotRL box has all the errata cards and some cards made with the custom card creator. My S&S box has the OP card deck and some cards from 4 class decks mixed in. (Currently running two characters through the AP and two characters through Season of the Shackles.) Both still have room.

I just put together the current Broken Token insert for my Skull and Shackles set. A couple pics:
Empty - (large)
Filled - (large)
Compared to the older version pictured on their website, the dice tray and character deck spots have replaced the narrow column and everything else was extended.
The Filled picture shows the game set up for Guild play, Adventure 2. Sadly I don't have everything in card protectors yet, but one step at a time. I did buy extra dividers (not shown; you get 8) so I'm planning to make blocks for decks 2-6 and removed cards and get rid of the card boxes.
I used tape on the corners and newspaper between the box and organizer to pad the edges. The only place I've had problems so far is in the middle of the side farthest from the block of character decks; the dividers can slip out. I might end up gluing a divider there for stability, but we'll see if it's actually needed as we get to play more with the set.
Hope this helps.

@Parody - good call on newspaper on the edges.
I too recently purchased the updated bt insert. Like the design, seems sturdy and the sleeved cards fit well. Couple things I am worried about:
Left row the insert slips in the middle (I think Parody's newspaper on that side will solve that issue)
Could use more inserts. With the addition of cohorts and mythic paths i am not sure there are enough slots for everything anymore once all the APs have been added.
Width of each row could be a tad wider, but I realize that would sacrifice the deck slots on the right. When putting a stack of cards away if you don't have them perfectly lined up it seems some will slip into the grooves and hang up. Not a big deal, but an adjustment coming from the regular insert with unsleeved cards sliding right in.
All in all a solid purchase and would recommend.

Thanks for sharing the pics of the new design! I was wondering what it would look like. I'm personally a bit torn. On the one hand, my full S&S didn't fit the old design. I ended up using part of the narrow lane for the character cards, tokens, and roles (turned perpendicular), so I the wide lanes being longer. But on the other hand, I kept a lot of stuff in that narrow lane. I got their location stands (which they seem to have discontinued) and could stack 12 of them in there. I also put pen, pencil and some other things in there. So I'll miss that.
Regardless though, I'm not picking another one up right now for budget reasons. So I guess my dilemma is moot. I'm probably going to be returning RotR to its "unsleeved" state and reuse the insert I had used for that. Though part of me it tempted to live dangerously and not sleeve WotR. Then again, Calthaer cringed when he saw me shuffling my unsleeved cards on Skype and gave me all the penny sleeves he had so I wouldn't ever do that again. Perhaps what I really need to do is take shuffling lessons. Now where I can I find a magician...

You could go back to a foam core diy insert Hawk, considering doing that myself as the sets are starting to stack up.
At least for the old sets, use fancy inserts on the current one etc.
Oh yeah! That reminds me I have the one I build for RotR before buying the Broken Token insert. It is on top of the fridge in my garage. Thanks for the reminder!

I have games pretty much everywhere in my house but usually not far from where we last played them. But moving the fridge to the garage because all other rooms are packed with minis, I'm not as advanced as Hawk.
So I guess you are playing on the roof because the street would be too dangerous. How do you manage the wind?

I've got one of the new design that I use for my Skull & Shackles set, which gets a fair bit of use (we are using it for Organized Play at a local game store). I've only had it for a few weeks, but I liked it so much that I bought another one for my Rise of the Runelords set. I suspect I'll be buying ones for Wrath of the Righteous, Mummy's Mask, ... as well. I also picked up a couple of sets of extra dividers, although I think one extra set is probably going to be enough for two boxes.
Before I bought the second one I asked the Broken Token folks why the one I had didn't match the pictures on their website, and was told that the website still showed the original version; what I had was the newer, updated version.
I glue mine using a woodworking glue everywhere except the central joints inside the narrow column (not gluing the dividers, of course).
JohnF |
Pretty much any glue intended for use with wood should work just fine. All it has to do is form a bond stronger than the actual material being glued, and the BT inserts aren't all that tough.
I used Elmer's "Carpenter's Wood Glue", because that's what I was able to find on the shelves of the local craft shop. It's standing up pretty well so far (even though I've dropped my fully-loaded "Skull & Shackles" set a couple-of times!).
